Association News From The Board of Directors

Our MISSION as the SCOVCA Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

SCOV Marketing Goal: Favorable Financial Impact for Owners

by Steve Knapp Marketing is the science and art of finding, reaching and fulfilling wants and needs.

For SCOV, our marketing efforts this fiscal year are directed by a team of Marketing Committee members with remarkable marketing and communications experience plus understanding of the golf, restaurant and real estate markets.

The Charter of the Marketing Committee is to “continue to evolve SCOV as an active adult community by designing marketing strategies that target the next generation of SCOV home buyers and by marketing SCOV as a community rich in the amenities desired by active adults seeking a healthy, dynamic lifestyle, including a championship golf course. Promote our community to the Tucson area and beyond, for the express purpose of attracting new residents, new annual golf pass holders and enhancing property values.”

In addition, the 2012-2013 committee has been assigned two initiatives from the retired Image Committee: 1) Update and improve gateways and signage; 2) Update place names to create a more current, youthful image. It is also responsible for implementing the new brand (name change to Sun City Oro Valley) and developing our standards manual.

The committee’s client is SCOV homeowners-as represented by its Association Board of Directors. Success will be measured by increased income at the Views Golf Course, Café and attributable SCOV home sales.

The new Committee Chair is Barbara Nye Ross, who has 35 years’ experience in marketing, communications, public relations and strategic planning. Members include Richard Babin, SCOV Communications Committee Chair; Chuck Bahnson, IBM sales, avid golfer and restaurants owner; Harry Patterson, Coca Cola management and restaurant owner; Nancy Sweeney, Chair of Ambassador Committee; Christine Takerian, active marketing and sales management training; Lauren Thompson, former chair of the Image Committee; Jan Bahnson, former restaurants owner and real estate agent; Jim Mitchell, former John Deere director of advertising. Additional members are being recruited.

The Association staff members who support marketing communications planning, implementation. and cost efficiency measurement include Robin Coulter, Chris Richard and Kat Newman. Board liaison is Steve Knapp, former Marketing Committee Member with 40+ years’ marketing, communications, and strategic planning experience.

National Emergency Preparedness Month

I realize that my January Tipster article was about emergency preparedness; however, September is Emergency Preparedness month. As a result, I want to again bring this important issue to your attention and remind you that a small committee of volunteers has been working on a plan for the Community.

The committee noted above is taking a short break as many of the members are out of town. However, they plan to begin meeting again in October and can use any help that may be offered. Therefore, if you have any interest in assisting with development of an overall plan that will help the community deal with a wide variety of possible disasters that could occur here, please contact me so I can add you to the committee list. Keep in mind that regardless of your participation on this committee, community involvement in any plan that is developed will eventually be necessary if our residents are to properly deal with a disaster such as fire, flood, earthquake or other natural or man-made disasters.

If you’re not prepared to be involved in a community wide plan at this point it is vital that you prepare your household for an undesirable event that may come along. I’m sure you’ve thought about developing a basic plan for yourself and assembling an emergency kit but thought it could wait until tomorrow or that it’s not that important since a disaster will never come along.

However, disasters do occur and it’s obviously too late to make plans after the event occurs. So, to avoid being unprepared which can lead to unnecessary physical harm and property damage, it’s time to plan now by assembling your kit and making proper evacuation plans if necessary. This may seem difficult, but nearly everything that you need to develop a plan is available on the Internet at www.ready.gov. Take a few minutes to plan and I’m sure that even if you don’t have the need to use your plan, you’ll feel better just being prepared.

The ARC committee has been working with active members of the Oro Valley Ham Radio Club living in Sun City to allow a usable standard for the placement of radio antennas. Our Association is grateful for the assistance residents with expert knowledge can provide when working with FCC guidelines. The ARC and the Association are much aware of the limitations we must follow regarding federal, state and local regulations for HOA’s. Please contact the Association staff and the ARC committee before starting any installation or outdoor design change project, so our standards can be met while our residents meet their needs and wishes.

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Oro Valley. Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard.

The volunteers of the CAC delivered their first load of cans for the fiscal year. They delivered 500 pounds which netted $280.

The CAC is the group which operates the Loan Room located at the end of the Cart Barn. The Loan Room is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM, and offers medical equipment, rollaway beds, cots, children’s items, tables and chairs for loan. You may make a reservation for items up to two months in advance at the Loan Room. The summer is a good time to visit and see what is available while the pace is slower. The Loan Room is funded by the annual Pancake Breakfast and your donations of aluminum cans. Thanks for your support.

We have been meeting with architectural firms to present the points that we developed regarding areas or aspects of the Fitness Center. Our intent is to see what type of plans and budgets can be developed using the information we gathered.

We continue to meet weekly, with all members of the community encouraged to attend our meetings. Our belief is that open, timely, two-way communication with continued involvement of all of us is the way to assure developing a plan that will work for everyone.

Our Artist of the Month is Lori Nalewicki, who has been busy all summer making items for display in the center front window of the Gift Shop.

Stop by to see her beautiful jewelry and her one-of-a-kind clay pieces.

Some of Lori’s jewelry is made with snake bones. She incorporates the bones with colorful beads to make fascinating earrings, bracelets and necklaces, perfect for gift giving and to own. Lori has worked with clay for some time and her sense of design on her vases is unique.

Boom of Summer Rain Our monsoon rains arrived bringing much growth of foliage and many weeds. Please make every effort to stay ahead of the weed situation in your yard, especially Desert Broom and Spurge. With the summer rains, new growth on trees also occurred. Trees must be kept trimmed more than seven feet above sidewalks so as not to encroach upon walkers or block visibility of stop signs at corners. Most bean pods are down now and should be removed from the ground in your yards.

Should an emergency arise, your home address needs to be found quickly. For safety reasons, please trim any vegetation blocking numbers on your home, and make sure all four lights in the fixture are burning brightly, so that the numbers are visible at night from the street.

We wish to issue a special thanks to all the residents who work hard to keep their yards in good shape throughout the year, especially in the summer months.

Some residents have left a garage door open during the night and have been concerned when they didn’t get a call from the Posse. Be assured, if a Posse patrol sees an open garage door, they will attempt to call the occupant, or if there’s no answer they’ll call 911. Spotting open garage doors is important, but it is not the Posse’s only activity. So please check on your garage doors before you retire for the night and if your vehicle is outside, place valuable items out of sight, close its windows and lock the doors.

We encourage you to send club activity photos that could be used in the Tipster. Please be advised that this is on a space-available basis each month. Submitting a photo does not guarantee it will be published. We prefer photos that have some action to them. A group playing cards has more action than just lining people against a wall. Show your club activity in the photo, make it interesting to new members.

The size of your photo is very important. If it is sent at 72 dpi, then it needs to be 12” wide by 8” tall, or larger. This allows the resolution to be increased up to 300 dpi. If the photo is sent smaller, for example 4” x 5” at 72 dpi, it can’t be converted to the 300 dpi resolution. Attach your photo, do not paste it in the email.

There are two ways to submit your photos: 1. Submit photo using the Article Form. Near the bottom of the form is an area to submit a photo.

2. Submit photo via email directly to Chris Richard’s email address crichard@suncityorovalley.com.

Did you know that from The Views Golf Club Facebook page you can make a tee time? Marketing in the digital world is an evolving opportunity. It seems that daily there are new and varied methods through which one could market. So which one is the best? The answer is whatever will bring the greatest return for the investment made. To measure our investment we utilize several different tools. We use analytics on our website to determine web page traffic. We purchase key words through Google so that when individuals are looking for a great place to live and if they’re over 55, our website is on the first page of their search. Just recently we have developed three unique web pages that sit outside our website. The goal is to send traffic to these promotionspecific landing pages so our marketing campaigns will benefit from increased performance and higher conversions. A conversion is a response to a call to action (fill out a form for some information, etc.). We will be testing the performance of the different elements that drive traffic (potential homeowners or golfers) to our websites and make adjustments as needed as we market Sun City Oro Valley and The Views Golf Club in the digital world.

Now let’s say that I am going to just walk into your yard and use your pool since I don’t have one. I think you would be angry about that. Each year you pay homeowner’s dues to maintain your investment in the community for facilities. Do you think it is fair for you to pay to enjoy the community and nonresidents can just walk in and use the pool or gym?

Residents have brought to our attention that nonresidents have been enjoying the benefits that you pay for.

They don’t think this is fair nor does the Association Rules are always to protect the paying resident members of SCOV. To accomplish this we now have two sign-in sheets at the Desert Oasis and Aquatic and Fitness Center. There is the resident sign-in sheet and a separate sign-in sheet for guests. This will help us control who is using the facilities that you pay for while protecting your investment.

• Get at least three references of homes they have painted in SCOV. Make sure the references were sat isfied with the work and results.

• Choose a painting contractor that is licensed and bonded. Ask to see a certificate of insurance. It’s im portant to hire an insured painter so you are not held responsible for any injuries to the painter or crew.

• To verify that a contractor is licensed, visit www.azroc.gov, the Registrar of Contractors’ website.

• Get a quote from the painting contractor and make sure the following are in writing: • Obtain painters contact information.

• Get specification of the exact work to be done, in cluding all areas to be prepared and painted. Writ ten contacts are a must and specify exactly how your property will be protected and total cost of project.

• Obtain the brand, type and quality of paint to be used.

• Make sure you receive a completion date.

Warning Signs of a Unlicensed Contractor • A person knocking on your door and asking if you would like your house painted. Reputable painting contractors normally do not do this.

• A person who asks for a large deposit before the work begins. A reputable contractor can order sup plies and schedule workers without requiring money from you. While it is reasonable to pay a small de posit ,10 to 20 percent depending on the scope of the work, beware of someone who asks for more.

• Their estimate is vague and/or they refuse to put a price in writing.

Friends of the Library

You may already be aware of Carol Wittels’ resignation as Librarian. Fortunately for us she has agreed to continue working until her replacement has been appointed and trained. Carol has been the heart and soul of the library for so long it is hard to imagine the place without her. She has built up the library and its stock of books, videos and audio books. She runs many other duties, the daily operation of the library: purchasing and processing materials, developing systems, organizing the volunteers and book sales as well as the many programs we residents have enjoyed over the years.

Carol has always worn many hats: she makes wonderful recommendations, matches books with readers, and delivers reading materials to residents unable to come to the library. She and Mark even mend books and clean videos in their spare time! No matter what she is facing in her life she is a constant, lively presence and a friend to all of us who love books and libraries. We will miss her.

We are planning a reception for Carol in the fall, details of which will be posted in the Tipster. Please remember to renew your membership in the Friends of the Library. The library depends on your donations for funds.

What to wear: Any sort of athletic shoe (excluding soccer cleats, golf shoes, etc.) will do – whatever you find comfortable. If playing racquetball, you can get special court shoes, but otherwise a good all around running or cross trainer shoe will suffice for most activities in the gym.

Golf Kim Griggs - Head Golf Professional

September is the start of overseeding on the golf course. Saturday and Sunday, October 22 and 23 the driving range will be closed. The course will be closed Saturday, September 22 through Thursday, October 11. The course will reopen Friday, October 12 and will be cart paths only through Friday, October 26.

Walkers may still use the cart paths for their morning or evening exercise. However, please do not walk on the golf course. When we reopen tee times will begin at 7:30 AM and shotguns at 8 AM. All walkers and riders must be off the course by 7 AM. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Pro Shop is having a huge sale on new and used golf clubs, golf balls and golf shoes. Stop by and check it out.

We will once again support Patriot Golf Days, Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3. This is a very worthy cause as the monies collected go to The Folds of Honor. This foundation provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation! We ask anyone playing golf or just wishing to donate to come to the Pro Shop and drop a dollar or two in the canister.

The month of September begins a major change of focus on the golf course.

Beginning at the start of May to the end of August the primary goal was to grow and strengthen the stand of Bermuda grass on the fairways, tees and greens.

All summer the fairways were regrassed, aerified, topdressed and fertilized to encourage the Bermuda grass to grow a healthy root system and provide a quality playing surface.

At the beginning of September the focus changes to preparing for the next overseed. The fertilizer applications are stopped and growth regulators are applied to slow the growth of the Bermuda grass. A potential problem arises if the weather is still hot during the early part of October. The newly overseeded rye grass is just starting to grow and establish, but if the weather is still hot the underlying Bermuda grass could potentially overtake the new rye grass seedlings resulting in a thin stand of rye grass in January.

The ultimate goal is to establish a healthy stand of Bermuda grass that will provide a good base for overseeding, and still be strong enough to survive the winter and transition back in May. This winter there will be a major focus on trying to alleviate the salt buildups in the soil from the reclaimed water. This will be accomplished by monthly aerifications and applications of soil penetrants to encourage leaching of the salts away from the roots. Hopefully, Mother Nature will help with some winter rains to help wash the salts out of the soils.

Features A Special Place in SCOV - Our Library

“We just love this library. It’s one of the best things about Sun City Oro Valley.” That’s the sort of remark the library’s volunteers hear all the time, and they enthusiastically agree. Much of the credit goes to Librarian Carol Wittels and librarians who came before her.

Carol has announced plans to retire from her duties soon.

Other than Carol, all the workers in the library are volunteers, as she was until a recent decision that the position should be a paid part-time position. Since 1988 when the library was established by residents with 35 paperbacks and a set of cookbooks in what is now our Gift Shop, the library has always been a volunteer operation.

When the Gift Shop expanded, the library moved to a corner of the Hopi Room, sharing space with billiards tables. As the collection grew, the library moved to what is now the Weight Room in the Aquatic & Fitness Center, and then to the Desert Oasis, each time doubling its space. When the Vistoso Center was acquired, the library moved to its present site. Dedicated volunteers planned, packed and organized every move. The art work in the room is either donated or on loan from Sun City residents.

Library materials are selected by Carol, who is attuned to the reading tastes and habits of residents and stays current on new and interesting books, movies, etc. Currently the library contains about 20,000 items, hard-cover fiction and non-fiction including large print, audio books, videos, paperbacks, books by Sun City authors, reference books, magazines and puzzles, and a few children’s books and videos. Fiction books not read for more than a year and non-fiction not read for two years are pulled from the shelves and then sold or passed on to other smaller libraries in the area.

The SCOV Association provides space, utilities, maintenance and upkeep for the library. However, operating funds come from resident donations, the sale of used books and from the Friends of the Library and the Sun City Vistoso Foundation. Friends of the Library was formed in 2001 as a membership auxiliary, and sponsors events such as the annual Books and Authors Luncheon and fine arts programs.

Active Health Committee - Special Guest Speaker The newly formed Active Health Committee has been a whirlwind of activity this summer. Formed to help bring health and wellness programs and activities to Sun City, the committee has an amazing lineup of programs for this year.

Mark your calendars for its first program Thursday, October 18, 1 PM, Social Hall/Hopi. The speaker was born in Minneapolis and was once known as Lovable Lou Riegert, the Twin Cities’ number one disc jockey.

He began his television career in Tucson; is an original CNN anchorman; boasts an Emmy among his numerous TV awards and is a Broadcasting Hall of Fame Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, September 2012

inductee. He’s an avid golfer and community volunteer who just happens to be our Town Council’s Vice Mayor.

His name is Lou Waters. Waters has long been fascinated with the phenomenon of aging. At CNN, he hosted a series called Coming of Age in which he crossed the country talking with experts and people of all ages to gain insight about growing older. Waters later read the best seller, Younger Next Year by Crowley and Lodge and has been talking about it ever since. Waters’ topic for this October 18 presentation: Turning Back Your Biological Clock.

Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Classes

Classes are held the fourth Wednesday of each month, 1:30 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui. Lonnie Davis teaches this class. To attend you must register ahead of time by calling Lonnie 825-3711 ext 136. You could save the life of a loved one or friend by taking this class. Call Lonnie to sign up for the September 26 class.

Gin Rummy

This year-round workshop is at George and Beverly Riley’s home. All skill levels are welcome. We practice playing, discuss the standardized game rules of Sun City Oro Valley, as well as scoring, etiquette and skill tactics. Couples and singles invited. No fee or dues.

Parkinson’s Exercise Classes

Exercise classes are held every Monday and Thursday, 4 PM, Vistoso Center/Apache, $10/class or $50/ month. Spouse or caretaker is welcome at every class. For information call Ray Jerkins 219-3561.

QiGong Class by Natural Health and Wellness Club

Healing Movement QiGong exercises developed by Joe Pinella are similar to physical therapy exercises.

They have been adapted for people with arthritis, chronic pain, stiffness, heart disease and cancer.

These very simple, effective, techniques actively engage the body’s own healing systems. By rotating all the major joints of the body, you expand and contract most of your muscles, thus increasing circulation and range of movement. They have helped people lessen their pain, regain more movement, increase their energy and live a better quality of life.

Fall Spanish Classes

The advanced class, the INTERjog class and the Beginner (now to be the INTERwalk) class all have enough students (5 minimum) to constitute 2012 classes. In order to maintain the class hours and days for each of these classes, a new beginner class would be held Tuesdays, 12:30-2 PM; INTERwalk, Tuesdays, 10-11:30 AM; Advanced, Thursdays, 10 AM-Noon; INTERjog, Thursdays, 12:30-2 PM. Tuesday classes start October 2 and Thursday classes start October 4. All classes end the week of December 10. Sunliners Line Dance Club - Basic Step Classes

One good way to offer your dog some free-running fun is to join Fido’s Friends and bring your dog to the Dog Park in Sun City so that the dog can enjoy off-leash exercise with other dogs in a safe, fenced-in park. The recent death of two younger hikers and finding a 70-year old hiker alive after some 33 hours remind us that one’s ability to hike in the heat is a personal thing.

Some of us may require more water or electrolytes than another person. Some of us might heat up more quickly or use more energy, thus requiring more food.

It’s important to know who you are when you set out on a trail. Remember, you can always bring home what you don’t need/use, but if you need that water/food/ electrolytes and don’t have it, you’re in trouble. Know yourself, stay safe and all your hikes will be enjoyable.

Even very personal poetry can convey a universal relevance in the sense that readers relate to an emotion, an experience, a revelation or a conclusion perhaps from a new perspective. In the following excerpt from The Moment by Maxine Scates, the poet expresses her discovery about acceptance of what can’t be changed and moving on: “...and the knowledge, just breaking like a crack of light under the door, that you will never repair what is broken, your burden to carry until finally you understood that the other side of desperation was not death but a life awaiting every mistake you had to make.”

We don’t talk about mistakes when critiquing our poetry. We do applaud what works and gently suggest improvements, understanding that revising is part of the writing process.

OV PD Hosting R.A.D. Women’s Self Defense Class Oro Valley Police Officers will be teaching this free selfdefense class for females. This training will empower you to fight back against crime with awareness, prevention and risk avoidance. The paradox of self-defense is that the more prepared you are, the less likely you are to need it. When you can recognize and respond to potentially dangerous situations, you are less likely to become a target of crime.

Attendees should wear comfortable workout attire, as this is a physical class consisting of punching and kicking.

Water will be provided and participants may bring snacks.
