Aquatic/Fitness Center Upgrade: An Overview Resident Pros and Cons and the Vast In-Between

by Fred Bjorling With this large and complex project ahead of them, the Board Directors receive quite a few communications from Members.

One category of urgent messages says, “Don’t do anything, or at least as little as possible! These are hard times! Let the members vote right now as to whether or not they want to spend a lot of money. They’ll tell you NO!” The other category says, just as urgently, “Ours is a dingy, often overcrowded gym! It is embarrassing to show it to guests and it’s an increasing detriment to the sale of homes here because our competition knows the value of fitness facilities to the next generation of buyers, and they all have nice, modern facilities! Get on with it, and make sure you do a good job.”

The third category, the largest, is a little less easily defined. Basically it consists of members who want to be shown the need, what is proposed, how it will be done, what the cost will be and how will it be financed.

Then they will decide whether or not they support it.

I started out on the conservative side of this issue but ended up supporting a major overhaul because of valid data that shows what we need and why. We’re getting much better at acquiring such information.

Aside from the gymnasium, an adequate solution will greatly relieve a large and growing “stealth” problem: Increasingly inadequate space for the many popular new fitness activities and clubs. This creates friction and resentment between residents and between residents and staff. It can only get worse without resolution. Think Zumba, who’d ever heard of it?

A healthy future for our community absolutely requires full resolution of these problems.

Value Added for Resident Golfers

Since the introduction of public golf at The Views Golf Club, challenges have arisen and comments and questions have been received from resident golfers about the value or lack of value that residents receive. As these comments and questions came to management, thought was given as to what kind of value resident golfers have had; what value could be added and how we could communicate this value to the golfers.

This article, as outlined below, is one of many ways we plan to communicate the value you receive as a resident golfer.

The ARC (Architectural Review Committee), currently comprised of 12 homeowners, continues to meet throughout the summer months. Know that we are here to review projects and that ARC approval is required prior to the commencement of work.

As a general rule, any planned work that changes the exterior appearance of your home or property (not including maintenance, repair work or minor landscaping) requires approval by either Jim Cundiff, Community Services Coordinator, or the ARC. Submittal forms, available from Jimʼs office, must be received by the Thursday prior to the next scheduled meeting.

In addition to reviewing submittals, done in accordance with the Development Standards and CC&Rs, the committee is also responsible for the inspection of sold homes prior to closing and determining appropriate satellite dish sites.

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Vistoso. Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard.

Fiscal year aluminum can receipts reported in May were $3,503; aluminum recycled to date; 5,523 lbs.

We continue to be open Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 8-9 AM, but our telephone reservation committee will take the summer off. Telephone reservations will begin again in October. Please make your reservations and pick up equipment at the Loan Room during regular hours. You can still reserve items up to two months in advance. Medical equipment has a loan time of two months but this can be extended if circumstances make it necessary. Tables and chairs have a loan time of one week and most other equipment can be borrowed for two weeks. Please be sure to bring your current Sun City Vistoso resident card when you pick up your items.

June finds Joanie Vander Vliet as the Gift Shop’s Artist of the Month. Joanie’s landscape weaving creations are among the unique items in the shop. She learned how to do the art back in the 70s. The backgrounds in her lighted vases are hand painted before she finger weaves on mono-filament line creating an oak, aspen, saguaro or whatever she imagines is right for that piece. You have to see her wall hangings to appreciate the amount of work involved. Please stop by our center front window and see for yourself. They are great. Did you know that we use twice as much energy heating our homes as cooling our homes, even though it costs more to cool them? So if you are getting a new more energy efficient air conditioner (13 to 16 SEER) it’s a good time to update your furnace to a more efficient one (85-96% AFUE). This makes even more sense if your new air conditioner uses the new non-freon R-410 refrigerant and needs a new cooling coil unit on top of your furnace. The project to update the landscape of Rancho Vistoso from Big Wash bridge to Del Webb was completed when the final few plants were put in place by our Common Area Maintenance staff.

The Committee reviewed the initial findings of the study evaluating the use of reclaimed water for the Mountain Vista landscape. Items identified for additional follow-up are being addressed.

As chair of the Name Change Ad Hoc Committee established by the Board of Directors of Sun City Vistoso, I would like to share with you some thoughts regarding our committee’s work to date. First, you may have heard that we received a wonderful response to our questionnaire, both online and from the flyer in the Tipster, asking what image comes to mind when you think of Sun City Vistoso and if you were comfortable with our current name. We received 867 responses, (representing 21% of our homeowners) and, as you might have guessed, Sun City Vistoso Tipster, June 2011

the responses were all over the map. A majority (62%) did say that they are comfortable with our current name.

Contrary to what some people think, we did not ask people to vote on a name, only to tell us what images the name brought to their mind and whether they were comfortable or not with it. It was not a vote on a name and was never intended to be. The decision as to whether a vote will be taken is up to the Board of Directors not the Name Change Committee.

Twenty-five years ago there were three active adult communities being developed in Southern Arizona. Today the number is closer to 20. Our committee’s goal, put another way, is to determine the best name for our community going forward in order to maintain and increase the investment each of us has made in buying here. It may be that keeping the name we have will be that one. We don’t know that yet. We feel we owe it to our community to consider alternatives, which is what we are doing. We will be testing our current name with preretirement populations around the country over the next several months. We also will be contacting those people who have taken ambassador tours over the past two years. We know that over twenty buyers here at Sun City Vistoso over the last several months first toured our community with an ambassador. We also will be doing some Internet testing of our current and variations of our name in order to test what name/language/descriptions best attract people to learn more about us on the Internet. When we have that information we hope we will be in a position to make a recommendation to the Board to keep or change our name in some way next fall. Our committee will convene again in October. We look forward to your continued interest in what we are doing.

We should now be able to tell if those frost damaged plants from last winter made it or not. It not, they need to be removed and replaced with a live plant or tree.

Have pride in your property and remember: • Trees must be trimmed up at least six feet above the sidewalk and back to no more than three feet out over the street.

• Cactus and/or bushes should not extend over the sidewalk.

• Exposed soil on your property needs covered by rock.

• Weeds growing in cracks of driveways, sidewalks, and where the cement meets the asphalt of the street are the homeowner’s responsibility to remove.

• Artifacts, including empty pots, are not allowed in front yards. Pots should be planted with live plants, as artificial ones are not allowed.

• On a corner lot, check the street-facing side of your yard for weeds and/or other possible infractions of the governing documents.

• For safety reasons, trim vegetation that blocks your house numbers or stop signs at corners.

One of the strategic initiatives assigned to staff was to look at the events that are available to our working population. Initiative AT-3 and 3.b are to provide evening classes for working residents and others who might prefer them and to offer an evening exercise class on a trial basis.

Residents can now find what events are available “5 PM and after” during the work week. In a calendar called Events after 5 PM. To access this calendar, go to our website, select the Calendar option on the brown bar. From the screen that opens Select View: Event Type. From the drop down box that says Concert select Events after 5 PM and the events in SCV that occur 5 PM and after will be displayed It was encouraging to see how many events in the community occur after 5 PM. While there’s room for improvement and adding evening options, our working population and others interested in evening activities have a wide range from which to choose.

Occasionally residents tell me, “I bet you’re glad when summer is here and things slow down.” The fact is that many things take place during the summer months behind the scenes.

Maintenance projects are always a big part of the summer schedule. This summer the parking lot from of the tennis courts to Silverton will be redone. This will cause the cancellation of some clubs using the Social Hall. Parking for the craft area and the gym and pool will also be disrupted. We ask for your cooperation and patience during that time.

Managers are busy during the summer reviewing the performance of employees and meeting one-onone with each person. Managers also are reviewed by the General Manager. The new fiscal year starts July 1. Managers must meet new goals, budgets and requirements set by the Board of Directors and General Manager.

Administration is preparing your annual document mailings which will be sent to you in addition to your annual dues invoice.

The fact is there is no down time for staff and employees as the summer starts. Projects are ongoing and scheduled throughout the year.

Many clubs are now submitting photos along with their articles each month. Two ways to do this are: 1 The website Tipster article form has an area for you to submit a photo along with your article. To get to the website form go online to www.suncity-vistoso. com, hold you mouse over News and Information scroll down to Tipster Newsletter and click, this brings you to the Tipster newsletter page. Click on Click here to submit your Tipster article online. Look down towards the bottom of the form just above the Submit button and you will see Upload your photo. Photos must be large.

Publication is not guaranteed. Click on the Browse button and search your computer for the photo file you want to submit, click on it. Then when you have the form completed you click on the Submit button and the photo will go in with your Tipster article. #2 You can submit a photo for the Tipster by sending it directly to me via email crichard@suncity-vistoso. com. Be sure to give the caption information and which club or committee it is for.

The photo must be fairly large. I need to send the print version of the Tipster to printer at 300 DPI. Most email photos are at 72 DPI which is too small for me to use unless the photo is more than twice the column size of the Tipster. I also need it sent as a JPEG format, RGB. We also are interested in photos of exceptional nature for the cover of the Tipster. We do not guarantee we will use it on the cover, but we would love to see your photos as possible candidates. The cover photos must be very large. You may want to submit them on a CD and drop it off at the Vistoso Center.

Try these four simple moves Find out where you stand. Remember back in school when the Presidential Physical Fitness Test rolled around? There was no avoiding the gauntlet of pushups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and more.

Though your PE instructor may now be a distant memory, it’s still smart to measure your strength, flexibility and endurance, just as you measure your blood pressure and weight. These tests give you a sense of your overall fitness level and even predict how you’ll age. To see how you rate, take this four-part challenge, designed to mimic the presidential test.

Put Yourself to the Test Your task is simple: After a five to ten minute warmup (running in place will do), try these four tests: Modified push-ups, curl-ups, sit-and-reach and one-mile timed walk. Stop by the Sports Complex and pick up a hand out for further information.

Stop by Administration and see Norma to get your pass. There have been some rate changes: Sun City Vistoso residents before August 1: annual 18-hole pass: $2,975/sgl; $5,525/cpl, after August 1: $3,075/sgl; $5,675/cpl. Annual 9-Hole pass, $1,785/sgl; $3,225/cpl.

Annual pass guest rates: summer, May 1-October 31; 18-Hole, $20 pp; 9-Hole, $15. Winter, November 1-April 30: 18-Hole, $40 pp; 9-Hole, $30 pp.

Nonresident memberships: annual 18-Hole pass $3,595/sgl; $5,895/cpl; annual 9-Hole pass $2,100/sgl; 3,725/cpl. Use of an Association golf cart is included along with seven-day advanced tee time reservations for both 9 and 18 holes.

Most people already know that the sand traps are going to be rebuilt this summer.

This will be a very large project so the planning stage has already started. Some people have expressed concern that the golf course will be closed during this construction, but the plan is going to be similar to the cart path project. Only the holes that are being worked on will be closed while the rest of the golf course will be open to play. This time the golfers will have an easier time negotiating around the construction since the actual work will be on the course and not with paths. Also, the normal summer maintenance of aerifying, topdressing, dethatching, and sprigging fairways will coincide with the sand trap project so the holes will not be closed multiple times for different reasons.

The architect has already been around the golf course, and has started putting together a preliminary plan.

Once the plans have been completed the construction contractor will be brought on site to put together a final strategy for the project. They are going to be removing all the old sand and liner, reshaping the trap to be more maintenance and golfer friendly, installing drainage to improve the moisture levels of the sand, and then installing the new sand. This new sand will be the same as what was used in hole 7, not the sand used on hole 17. Hopefully, the project will go smoothly and be completed by early to mid-August.

It is a beautiful time of year. The rough is greening up, and the fairways are starting to roll a little more. We are sorry to see the seasonal residents leave, but it is nice to have plenty of available tee times.

We are all excited about getting the bunkers rebuilt, starting at the end of June. I do hope that people will be aware of raking the bunkers. Once in a while it seems that a few people feel they have permission to leave their footprints in the bunkers. We are all responsible for raking the bunkers and fixing our ball marks on the greens.

Come to our meeting the first week of July.

As the season closes it is time to reflect upon this season’s major events. Our Member/Guest Tournament was a huge success. One hundred players participated with Bob and Todd Howe winning the Hogan flight. The Snead Flight winners were Dick and Mike Westphal.

Ray Bruns and Jason Rickard captured the Nicklas flight with Jerry Kerschner and Gary Fournelle taking the Palmer flight. In addition to awarding the flight winners, a variety of event winners were announced at the closing banquet dinner. Member/Guest Chairman, Steve Mooneyham, would like to thank all who made this event a success.

Starting times depend on the season and range from 6:00 AM (summer) to 8:30 AM (winter) During the summer season you must sign up for play in the club’s book located behind the Pro Shop’s counter. During this season you are can play/sign up with your Buddies every play date. Remember to sign up at least one week in advance since available slots fill up quickly.

Play will continue throughout the summer, but without games. Our first fall meeting will be held immediately following golf October 20. This will be a Play with Your Buddies Day. Our club now has 74 members and is still growing. During our regular seven month season, we play creative games each week that foster new friendships within the membership.

You don’t need a low handicap to play golf in our club.

We are guys who keep score of both our golf strokes and club friends. We have Burger Bashes, tournaments and other social events that add to our camaraderie.

Tickets sales have begun for the season: Pops $181.20 pp, Classics $206.40 pp. Purchase your concert tickets from Pam or Coco at Administration. If you are a seasonal resident, mail your check to: SCV Attn.: Pam. 1565 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd. Oro Valley, AZ 85755. Tickets sales will end Sunday, July 31. If you are mailing a check, include your phone number, indicate which tickets you are buying and how many, and if you will be purchasing bus tickets in August.

The price of bus tickets will be determined by how many people want to ride the bus. By Monday, August 22 we will tell you what the price of bus tickets will be, and we must have your check by August 29. A guess on the price would be to ride the bus, will be between $80 and $100 additional. If you have a questions, call Pam or Coco at Administration.

Friday, June 10 WildHorsePass Casino Bus Trip, No Charge

Jump on the bus and have a great time at the WildHorsePass Casino. Even though there is no charge for this trip, there are a limited number of seats. The bus will depart SCV 9 AM, and depart from the Casino 4 PM. Each person will receive $10 to use at a slot machine. On the bus we will draw one lucky winner to receive a $15 lunch voucher. Get your tickets early.

Enjoy the comfort of a luxury bus trip to the Diamondbacks game. The D-Backs will be playing the Cleveland Indians. The bus will leave from behind the Vistoso Center 9:45 AM. Will depart from the stadium a half hour after the game. Please park between the tennis courts and Rancho Vistoso Blvd.. Remember weather is no problem since the stadium is covered and air conditioned. Seats are in the Diamond section of the stadium. Food service to your seat is provided.

Once again SCV is very proud to offer use of our facilities for Special Olympians. On the morning of August 27 the Sports Complex pool, golf course and bocce courts will be used for competition by the athletes. Residents should keep this information in mind and plan to use our facilities later in the day August 27.

Residents are always invited to watch the competition and cheer the athletes on.

Dispose-A-Meds Program Comes To Sun City Vistoso

The OVPD (Oro Valley Police Department) and the Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation are bringing the successful Dispose-A-Meds program to the SCV. This is an effort to make it easier for our residents to dispose of unwanted medications.

This event has been scheduled for three dates: Tuesdays, July 12, August 9 and September 13, 11 AM, the hallway of the Social Hall. Other future dates will be announced.

Learn the Life Saving Skills of CPR

The new science of Continuous Compression CPR makes it fast and easy to learn what you can do for someone suffering sudden cardiac arrest. Golder Ranch Fire personnel will be teaching CPR Tuesday June 21, 2-4 PM, Social Hall/Hopi. The lesson is free but please register by calling 818-1017. Seating is limited.

The 2011 National Duathalon Championships were held in Oro Valley on April 30. Three Sun City Vistoso residents who are also Vistoso Cyclist Club members, Corinna Goodman, Roe Erlandson and Frank “Jerimiah” Russell, participated. This was a 5K run, 35K cycle, 5K run event.

This was a busy month for the billiards crew as we have just finished up the hotly contested Player of the Year contest.

All the players did their best but in the end George Jelten beat all comers to win the title with Jim Cook coming in a close second. This contest came down to the last game to determine a winner. We look forward to next year’s competition and hope it will be just as close.

Jack Matthies went out of his way to make these tournaments a big success.

The weatherman has predicted a hot summer this year, so it would be a good time to think about a cool place to spend those hot afternoons, like the billiards room.

A few weeks ago, our club sponsored a snake-aversion training program by a professional dog trainer using live defanged rattlesnakes. A total of sixteen dogs underwent training and are now protected from rattlesnake bites.

Fido’s Friends is the club that maintains the dog park where club members’ dogs can have safe, off-leash time and can socialize with other dogs. If your dog is looking bored lately, join Fido’s Friends and start taking your dog to the park for the best hour of his day.

Speaking of dogs having fun, dog toys provide entertainment, reduce separation anxiety, clean teeth and help absorb excess doggie energy. Dog toys should be used only under supervision. Discard any frayed or damaged toys, and match the toys to your dog’s size, activity level and interests.

You may disagree with poet James Russell Lowell who wrote these well-known lines over a century ago but surely the month of June in Sun City Vistoso is perfect for the pursuit of poetry. As the thermometer rises, those of us still in residence often find more time for reading and quiet contemplation, for inviting inspirations and acceptance.

Bring a poem you’ve written and join our informal workshop. Our intent is to provide thoughtful and encouraging critiques that lead to self-improvement. We will continue to meet throughout the month of June.

Regular workshop sessions will not be held during July and August but that should not stop your creation and enjoyment of poetry.
