Views From Your Home

Many SCV homeowners had excellent mountain or golf course views when they bought homes. Those views may now be partially or totally obscured. This is distressing and may lower their home’s value.

Are there possible remedies?

If your home is officially listed as having a golf course view, the Common Area Maintenance Crew has begun on hole # 1 to clear excess brush and debris directly behind your home to provide a minimum of at least a 50% view of the course. The crew is moving progressively toward hole # 18. If you do not wish to wait until they reach your area, a Commercial Landscaper Plan enacted by the Board of Directors enables you to hire one of a number of prequalified commercial landscapers. They must follow certain guidelines to trim the area behind your home. This can be done by contacting Mary Cunningham, Common Area Maintenance Supervisor, to get the needed information.

These landscapers may also be hired to enhance your mountain view if your lot abuts a common area.

Under no circumstances are homeowners permitted under the current governing documents to personally alter common areas around their homes unless their tract declaration permits such. Association members may risk being fined for doing work such as planting, irrigating or clearing common areas. Only the Common Area Maintenance crew or the prequalified commercial landscapers who have agreed to the Association guidelines may work outside lot lines of most SCV homes.

Many views from all homes may be improved by assuring that hedges are not taller than six feet (6’) on any portion of any lot as stated in the CC&Rs. A hedge is defined in the Development Standards as “a fence or barrier formed by a line of closely spaced plants, and performing a similar function to a screen wall or fence”. Contact Jerry Van Brunt, Community Services Coordinator, for questions regarding hedges that may be obstructing your view.

Your Board of Directors is concerned about disappearing views and welcomes suggestions for view enhancements.

Since the time that GolfNow and other public golf have been allowed, some of our pass holders have commented that the annual golf pass is losing its value. While this thought is somewhat understandable on the surface, a more in-depth look at the situation may prove that the annual pass continues to be very beneficial and valuable for the frequent golfer.

The reasons most often expressed for the devaluation of the annual pass are the low green fee rate for GolfNow players and the simple fact that the course has been opened to the public. On the surface it makes sense that the low average fee paid by the GolfNow players would be a detriment to purchasing an annual pass; however, it is also very important to consider that low GolfNow rates are typically booked a day or two prior to play when only specific and usually less than prime time tee times are available. These last minute, low-rate green fees have obviously created some issues with our residents; yet these green fees have resulted in revenue where there was only an empty golf course in the past.

Now let’s take a quick look at what the annual pass holder receives, in addition to a low average green fee rate of about $30: seven-day advanced tee times; the ability to play with the groups with which you desire to play; unlimited range balls; 20% off Pro Shop merchandise; and personalized service that is a notch above what is typically practical to provide to the general public. Plus the 9-Hole pass holders should keep in mind that in spite of the minimal restrictions placed on these passes, there is real value in this type of pass due to the fact that the Views Golf Club is the only club that offers a 9-hole pass in this area.

In regard to the thought that public play diminishes the value of the annual pass, there’s no doubt that the Views Golf Club, as well as all other golf clubs, would prefer to remain completely private. However, the clear fact is that hundreds, if not thousands, of “private” clubs throughout the country and world have opened their doors to the public in an effort to stay in business.

Although the Views Golf Club would likely continue to operate without public play, it should be seriously considered that every dollar brought in from public play is another dollar that lessens the burden on our residents and reduces the probability that our resident golf fee rates will increase.

Last but not least, there is great value in the annual golf pass due to the quality of The Views Golf course on which a pass holder can play as often as desired and a staff that wants to do everything possible to fulfill your needs and assure that you truly enjoy every round of golf played at the Views Golf Club.

ARC Architectural Review Chair Lee Vander Ark 722-9374 Second and fourth Tuesdays, 1 PM, Vistoso Center/Yaqui Exterior Home Improvements

Part of the ARC mission is to maintain the aesthetic harmony of SCV in keeping with the desert environment and architectural character of the Sonoran Desert. All changes to the exterior of your home that would affect its appearance require a submittal to and approval by the ARC. The CSC (Community Services Coordinator) can assist you with your submittal by providing necessary forms and requirements for your project.

Many maintenance, repairs, and minor landscaping changes can be approved by our CSC, Jerry Van Brunt. The Development Standards provide for the CSC review and approval of some minor changes without ARC approval.

Aluminum Can Donations: Put those aluminum cans to work for Sun City Vistoso! Deposit only empty, clean aluminum cans in the box outside the Social Hall kitchen. For safety reasons do not deposit unrinsed cans which attract bees and may become a hazard.

Fiscal year aluminum can receipts reported in November were $1,505; aluminum recycled to date 2,613 lbs.

The Loan Room, which is sponsored by the Community Assistance Committee, is located at the end of the Cart Barn and has items available for loan to residents.

We carry items for your medical needs, in addition to tables and chairs for get-togethers, cots and rollaway beds, and many childrens’ items. Reservations can be made by telephone on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays or at the Loan Room when we are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Telephone number and times are on the inside front cover of the Tipster.

The Community Assistance Committee is sponsoring the annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, January 29, Auditorium. Please come out and support the Loan Room.

Any member in good standing may still become a nominee, provided that prior to Tuesday, January 11, the following items are submitted to the SCVCAI Administration Office: a petition, on a form provided by SCVCAI, to the Chairman of the Nominating Committee with signatures of 50 voting members in good standing (one signature per lot owned), written certification of eligibility from Bob Mariani, General Manager, and a resumé on a form available at the Administration Office.

Elaine hand shapes and polishes the shards to fit the exact design of her jewelry.

Safe disposal of all unused and old medications to prevent contamination of our drinking water is vital to our safety and well-being. Because of these issues, it is no longer recommended that medications be flushed down a toilet or mixed with coffee grounds and placed in the garbage.

The Oro Valley Optomists’ Club, the OV Police, the University of Arizona School of Pharmacy and the Target Store on Oracle have formed a partnership to accept these medications once a month for police-supervised safe disposal. This program is called “Dispose A Med Oro Valley”. Old and unused medications, containers and lids can be turned in once a month from 10 AM to 2 PM outside the Target Store. Disposal is conducted at an undisclosed police facility where illicit drugs are incinerated.

Pharmacists in Oro Valley can advise you of the dates for medication collection and disposal at the Target Store.

In the spring of 2010 the SCV Board of Directors authorized the establishment of the Name Change Committee. This was in response to recommendations made in the fall of 2009 by the Long Range Planning Committee.

The committee will meet the first and third Thursdays of each month, 4:30 PM, Catalina Vista/Yavapai. These are open meetings, so all residents are invited to attend. Agendas will be posted on the website and bulletin boards.

If you have not already made a New Year’s Resolution, it’s not too late to do so. Let’s try once again to make one and keep it this New Year. How about making a resolution to take pride in and care of ourselves, our homes, and our property where we live. Most of us already do that, but just think how wonderful our community would look if we all did.

Our committee members have certainly enjoyed seeing the beautiful holiday decorations throughout the community over the past few weeks. As a friendly reminder though, seasonal decorations should be removed by Saturday, January 15. We appreciate all residents who continually take pride in the appearance of their property, and we are most pleased with how beautiful our community is looking to usher in the New Year. We wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2011.

The Posse patrols each evening in three-hour shifts and our Partners in Prevention, the Oro Valley Police Department, agree that our patrols are an important crime deterrent. The Properties Committee continues to work on audio amplification systems in Association meeting areas. The speakers are being adjusted in the Auditorium to better distribute sound, and different types of microphones and amplification systems are being tested for smaller meeting rooms. Induction loop systems have been put on hold at least for the present, as most newer hearing aids do not have the necessary telecoil required for this system.

At the request of the SCV Board, a Realty Committee has been assembled, comprising six open-minded residents. The Committee’s objective is to explore and evaluate, in depth, viable options for a real estate operation that could generate sustainable income for SCV. If there are any such options, the Committee will recommend the best one to the SCV Board, along with rationale, supporting data, and a plan for implementation. If there are no attractive viable options, the Committee will make that recommendation (no action) to the SCV Board and then sunset.

In the course of our research, we will gather input from many resources, including legal and financial experts, SCV residents and area realtors. We expect that special meetings will be scheduled for this purpose as we search for the right answer rather than simply a quick answer.

The Sports Complex Committee is looking at alternatives and gathering information in order to recommend a design, timing plan and funding plan for expansion/ renovation/rebuilding of the SCV Sports Complex. “High season” at Sun City Vistoso brings an increase of residents, renters and visitors. Rooms are full and the facilities are abuzz with activity. It’s a busy time of year.

from the Long Range Plan. From these 25 recommendations four ad hoc committees were created and after a summer hiatus, all four committees are addressing their mission.

It’s an exciting time in our community. Issues are being studied. Leadership is being proactive in addressing concerns to keep Sun City Vistoso a vital, attractive, active adult community.

With all the activity, come lots of discussions. Sometimes the discussion, especially around a topic that involves spending money, isn’t always complete or accurate and has a rumor mill effect. Below are some ways in which you can have the most accurate information and be an informed resident.

• Read minutes & agendas.

• Board level: All Board meeting minutes and agen das, Study Session agendas and Study Session Notes are available on our website or in the library.

• Committee level: If submitted to the Association, the agendas and minutes are available on the website and in the Administration office.

• Join the ListServ and be notified when agenda/min utes are posted.

• Volunteer to serve on a committee or run for the Board.

While most of our residents take excellent care of our collection of books, far too many books suffer irreversible damage and must be removed from the shelves. It is unreasonable to think that older books do not deteriorate on their own, especially in our dry climate. Our resident book binder does his best to analyze each volume individually and restore those that are repairable. As any book lover will attest, it is difficult and expensive to have to remove a relatively new and expensive item from the collection because of negligence. Therefore, SCV management has set forth a new policy, effective January 1, 2011. Your cooperation will be appreciated.

New Library Policy: The books in the library are maintained at high standards to the enjoyment of all patrons. In an effort to maintain this standard, patrons of the library who return damaged books including, but not limited to, books that have damage from pets, food, liquids or are saturated with cigarette, pipe or cigar smoke, will be subject to a fee for replacement of the book.

People gain weight as they age because they become less active, don’t maintain their muscle strength and eat more as their metabolism slows down. Unfortunately, just maintaining your activity level isn’t enough. The only way to compensate is to become more active as we age. You should perform resistance exercise to maintain muscle mass. Exercise for more than an hour a day at least five days per week. Eat a high-fiber diet that includes lots of produce and few processed foods (and control your portions). This will help you fight the battle of the bulge.

As everyone knows, we are now open to the public which makes us a semi-private golf course. Please be aware that as new people play our course, they may be a little slow since it may be their first time here. Our rangers are aware of this and will help move them along.

We advise everyone of our rules and emphaize them in the Pro Shop. So, please be patient and courteous to these guests. We try and fill in empty times with these guests as a way to increase our revenue.

Happy New Year! The Bermuda grass around the golf course has completely turned brown and gone dormant for the winter. The look of the dark green fairways, tees and greens really stand out next to the brown roughs.

This would be a good time to remind everyone of the proper divot repair procedures for the winter months. The sand and seed divot mix should only be used on the fairways and tees. It should not be used in the brown rough areas because the seed will germinate in the new divot and create a green spot in the brown grass. This rule applies to all brown grassed areas which includes the entire par 3s this year. If a divot taken from the fairway has retained its shape, it should be placed back in the ground instead of using the divot

mix. The divot will heal much quicker than the time it takes for the divot mix to germinate and heal the injured area. Also, any divot taken from a brown area should be replaced since the divot mix can’t be used.

When fertilizer is applied to turf, it is basically like pouring salt on the grass. During these applications, the fertilizer needs to be watered in with sufficient amounts of water to dissolve. This leads to wetter playing conditions. Normally, fertilizer is only applied on Mondays, but with all the cold weather, other days have been used.

The Pro Shop will be made aware of wet conditions when fertilizer has been applied.

Jerry Haddock, Chairman of the Golf Advisory Committee, passed away on Thursday, December 2. Jerry not only loved golf, but was passionate about golf in Sun City Vistoso. As golf courses around the country faced declining numbers of players, Sun City Vistoso was not exempt. Jerry made it his business to brainstorm for ideas to buck the trend. He worked tirelessly to make our golf club a success, both socially and financially. He set up the Patriot’s Course, a shorter course for residents who might not now have the stamina for a full length course. He was instrumental in welcoming GolfNow as one way to bring in revenue and help make our course more self-sustaining.

Anyone who knew Jerry, played golf with him, or served on a committee with him, could not help but be impressed with his enthusiasm and energy in the name of golf. Jerry set a high standard of dedication that will be difficult to emulate and he will be sorely missed. A memorial for Jerry will be held Friday, January 21, 5:30 PM, Social Hall/Navajo.

The Golf Advisory Committee will continue to look for ways to bring in additional revenue while we strive to remain one of the best courses in the Tucson area.

Our club has a current membership of 67 players and is still growing. We are guys who keep score of both our golf strokes and our club friends.

We have burger bashes, tournaments and other social events that add to our camaraderie.

December was a busy month with our Holiday luncheon, AWGA State Medallion, playing host to the Catalina Cup and the qualifying for President’s Cup. Thanks to Leslie Platt, the holiday elf and all the other helpers for the wonderful luncheon and thanks to all of the volunteers who helped with Catalina Cup. Having players here from other clubs is a great way to showcase our wonderful golf course.

Most of our winter visitors are back in town so if you know of anyone who golfs and does not belong to our club, please invite them to join us. We have many fun activities planned for the year and would welcome their participation.

These two young girls knew at an early age they were heading West! They grew up together as neighbors in the Midwest, enrolled at the same college, moved to California, went their separate ways when they each married, and when it came time to retire with their husbands, chose Sun City Vistoso. You could say one followed the other (they are one year apart in age) but the older mostly followed the younger, no doubt when it came time to get on this pony too. The women say Sun City Vistoso is their last stop. As you can see from the photos, the younger was having a “bad hair day” (probably the result of a Toni permanent) while the older has Shirley Temple curls that her mother labored over every day. The older is no longer following the younger, however, as she continues to travel the world. The younger, after several trips to Europe in earlier years, is very content involved with a job she loves at SCV. Can you guess who they are? The cowgirl on the left is Carol Wittels and the other cowgirl is Joyce Hoffman.

Come join us for the Mata Ortiz Pottery Show and Sale, Saturday, January 29, 8 AM-4 PM and Sunday, January 30, 10 AM-3 PM, Social Hall/Navajo. Meet Oralia Lopez and her father, Uriel Lopez, and Oralia’s aunt and uncle, Norma Lopez and Jose Luis Martinez.

They will bring their own pottery as well as a variety of pottery from other artists. At 10 AM Saturday and 11 AM Sunday, Stuart Scott and John Bezy will be presenting a power point show about the archaeology of Paquime, the ancient site near Mata Ortiz, and the second generation of artists. Stuart and John will also bring their new book to sell: Artistry and History of Mata Ortiz. It features great photography of the pottery and artists. That’s also the morning of the CAC Pancake Breakfast so come into the Native American rooms to see beautiful pottery. This is an SCV Association and Spanish Cultural Club co-sponsored event.

This world-wide Irish entertainer is back for another great show. Cahal is a favorite who visits us every few years filling the house with his talent and comedy. Enjoy a great night with friends and a “wee bit” of fun.

They are: Victor Lodato whose Mathilda Savitch won the Barnes & Noble outstanding novel award in 2009; Lydia Millet who has written several novels and short story collections, will discuss her most recent publication Love and Infant Monkeys, which satirizes celebrities and their animals and Lydia Otero, whose recently published La Calle documents the Tucson Mexican American community’s tragic experience with urban renewal during the 1960s. All are nourishment for avid readers.

Beginner Line Dancing Lessons

The Villanellas regret to announce that we can not offer the ballroom dance lessons. The negotiations with the instructor broke down and we have been unable to find another teacher. However, we will keep looking and will inform you when we are successful.

Holiday Food Drive Results

Thank you to residents of Sun City Vistoso for generously contributing to the Holiday Food Drive. As of December 10, residents donated 909 lbs. of food and $25 cash to the Catalina Community Services Food Bank and all contributions were greatly needed by our local community. The food drive continued until December 31.

New Club forming, Natural Health and Wellness

SCV Telephone Blackout

On the afternoon of Wednesday, January 5, the SCV telephone system will be replaced. During the first part of the afternoon there will be no telephone access to the Association offices. After 3 PM there will be limited access. Full access should be back by Thursday morning during which time we will be trouble shooting and fine tuning the new system. Your patience during this installation is appreciated.

Pima County is presenting a two day bicycle Safety Class on January 25, 9 AM-1 PM, Social Hall/Navajo and January 27, 9 AM-3 PM, in the administration parking lot. Participants must attend both days and will receive free gifts such as: reflective tapes, tire levers, choice of helmet, rear bike light or bike U-lock.

In February, we return to our usual room to examine The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.

This is about the disappearance of a teenage Swedish heiress. The discussion will be led by Eileen Rotman.

On January 5, Mona Schorr-Holder will help us reflect on a selection from Moses Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah, describing eight degrees of almsgiving from highest to lowest and Andrew Carnegie’s The Gospel of Wealth, Part 1, where he considers how the administration of wealth affects both rich and poor.

On January 19, Michelle Brislance will facilitate a discussion on serving, focusing on the somewhat spooky story of “Luella Miller” by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman and the poem, “Saving the Crippled Boy,” by Jan Beatty where a young girl discloses her conflicted feelings.

We return again to giving on February 2 with Elise Asch guiding us through a discussion of “A Bed for the Night”, a poem by Bertolt Brecht with much to ponder despite its brevity.

What a joy it is to spend the holidays square dancing!

The Sundancers had a wonderful dinner dance December 8 and provided many Christmas gifts in response to The Angel Card wishes from Catalina Community Services. December 29 the club enjoyed ringing in the new year together a few days early.

Square dance classes are going well for both beginners and advanced. New students will continue lessons on Mondays at 4:30 PM and their practice dance Wednesdays at 4:30 PM, both in the Auditorium. The Plus students have lessons Mondays at 3 PM and their own practice dance on Wednesdays at 3 PM in the Auditorium.

Round dancers will have an all-level dance on Monday, January 17, 1-3 PM, Auditorium with Barb Haines cueing.

The Sundancers will host a special square dance with Mike Sikorsky calling, Saturday, January 29, 7 PM, Auditorium. The Bonds will cue round dancing at 6:30 PM. The Gun Club is for people who have an interest in learning about guns, shooting, personal protection and firearm safety. In fact, you do not even need to own a gun or have any experience with firearms to come to meetings. You are invited to come and see if our club activities would interest you.

In November, Detective Gary Schmitz and Investigator Wes Helvig, Oro Valley Police, presented a program on gun cleaning, maintenance, firearm safety and personal protection for the club. The audience of 30 people included club members and visitors. Detective Schmitz and Investigator Helvig discussed situations involving personal defense at home, in the car/ RV, and community with practical suggestions that were immediately useful. The officers’ relaxed style of presenting the information and responding to the many questions helped those present to be at ease in discussing such a serious topic as carrying a concealed weapon and personal defense involving a firearm. The officers brought a gun cleaning bag with all the tools, equipment and supplies that was quite impressive, and demonstrated cleaning several weapons of various calibers and types. Subsequent to the meeting, several people stated that they were able to ask a sensitive question “they had always wanted to ask of a police officer”.

We work through AVIVA Children’s Center, Catalina Community Service, UMC, TMC, NW Medical Center Pregnancy Center, Tri-Community Service Center in Mammoth, Three Points Service Center and Clinic and Family Service in Oracle to get these handmade toys into the hands of children who need them. In addition, we purchased gifts for 25 children through Catalina Community Services Adopt A Family program.

At our January 17 meeting, sponsored by the Dinner ‘N Show Club, we will show “Walkin’ the Dordogne River Valley of South Central France” presented personally by Gordon McCall, a local Oro Valley resident.

This valley of south central France is highly concentrated with the most beautiful old and medieval villages of France. This video program takes you walking and learning the valley, its villages, and chateaux. It concluded with explorations of fascinating world famous prehistoric cave art. Included is an interactive introduction and a positive discussion.

We think the viewer will get a real sense of having “walked in our shoes” in this program, in addition to the many opportunities to learn about the geography, history and culture of this “off the beaten track” area for most American travelers.

In upcoming presentations, Gordon, a retired world history teacher, will enlighten us with the history, culture, archaeology, geography, etc. of his various travel subjects.

We look forward as a club to providing musical enjoyment at the Annual Club Fair on Friday, January 14.
