Association News From the Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors - Jim Cherry Jim Cherry, 6128055637, jimcherryscov@gmail.com

Happy New Year. We are at the beginning of the busy season of activities, a chance to enjoy what we like most and perhaps to try something new. Because SCOV operates as a 501(c)4 organization, the IRS considers us a Social Welfare Club/Organization. As such, SCOV is designed to provide services and amenities which generate expenses for its owners. We have amenities (restaurant and golf) that earn revenue, which helps defray expenses and yet these amenities will not net a profit. The monthly Tipster is another example, where advertising revenues mitigate but do not cover the overall cost of producing this publication. To illustrate this “amenities for member enjoyment,” we have broken out our $2,630 in annual dues across each of our amenity groupings. This projection covers operations, maintenance of buildings/grounds and the repair/replacement of over 700 of our assets. Some labor expenses are apportioned based on percentages.

25-26 Annual Dues $2,630 are categorized as follows

General Manager - Sandy Seddon sseddon@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080

Happy New Year. As we step into 2026, everyone at SCOV wishes you a year filled with health, happiness and renewed energy. We’re excited to build on the progress we made together in 2025 and look forward to another fantastic year in our community. Last year brought several major accomplishments. We successfully completed the asphalt project, enhancing safety, accessibility and the overall look of our community. Thank you for your patience and cooperation during construction. We also rolled out Global Northstar, our new technology platform, which has improved efficiency, streamlined communication and strengthened our digital foundation. In our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we completed the additional solar installation near the Activity Center. This project continues to position SCOV as a leader in green initiatives among homeowner associations. Looking ahead, we will be developing a master plan for xeriscaping our common areas, preserving the beauty of the Sonoran Desert while saving water. One of the most exciting projects for 2026 is the pool renovations, expected to begin in February. This upgrade will provide refreshed, safer and more enjoyable facilities for everyone and we’ll be sharing updates as details and timelines are finalized. Finally, none of this progress would be possible without the dedication and energy of our incredible volunteers. From committees to special projects, your contributions make SCOV a stronger, more vibrant community. Thank you for all that you do, we couldn’t do it without you.

$177 Community Trash Service (vs $100-$140 per quarter for public rates) $613 Activity Center, Welcome Center and Common Areas (Library, Member Services, Meeting Space, broader Common Area care)

$402 Athletic & Fitness Center (AFC) (AFC building, Fitness Center, AFC Pool, DO Pool)

$342 Restaurant (after revenue) (includes the green space) $324 Golf (after revenue) $243 Artisan Center and Copper Center $203 Desert Oasis (includes Pop-Tennis and Basketball, excludes Pool) $193 Catalina Vista $133 Hardcourts(includes pickleball, tennis, bocce, mini-golf, excludes pop-tennis, basketball) We all pay one price for the opportunity to enjoy any number of possibilities. At $7.21 per day, per household, this is a bargain for staying active, mentally and physically, in our retirement years.

Copper Center Update Theda Ellis, 3023889798, tellisscov@gmail.com Copper Center Update – January 2026

This update focuses on soft costs — often misunderstood by those of us who are not in the construction field. Our Schematic Design Plan estimated $2,153,633 in construction (hard) costs such as labor, materials, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, paint and demolition. In addition, there is roughly $700,000 in soft costs, which are non-construction expenses. These include building permits, architectural and engineering fees, builder’s risk insurance, construction sales tax, etc. While items like equipment and furnishings fall under soft costs and can be reduced, most soft costs are unavoidable. For example: Permits for a $2.2M project are approximately $30,000, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical and kitchen removal. Architectural and engineering drawings are required before work begins.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! Something for Everyone By Rick Price Sun City is a community of family and friends. One of the great things about our community is there is something for everyone. If you have an interest, you most likely will find some like-minded people who share your interest. Sun City Oro Valley is a top-rated active adult community in the United States. Approximately 40% of the residents in Sun City have enjoyed some aspects of the golf facilities. In such a diverse community, having 4 out of 10 residents enjoy golf in some capacity reflects well on the active lifestyle here and the quality of the golf facilities we offer. One of our goals at The Views Golf Club is to make the game accessible to as many people as possible. We know that golf is as much a social experience as it is an athletic experience. Towards that end, we’ve created a wide variety of activities for golfers and non-golfers alike. For our traditional players, there are both 9-hole and 18hole leagues for the women and the men. These leagues are fun and competitive; social storytelling, meals and an occasional drink or two are standard practice after play is done. For all levels of golfers, we offer several fun and easy ways to experience what golf is all about:

4

• If you’re a non-golfer or just beginning and even golfers that want to improve, we offer weekly clinics on the full swing, irons, short game and putting. • Our Chip & Putt league events are great times for getting out on the course, chipping and putting on the course and enjoying the spectacular views and social get together with a meal after the round on the restaurant terrace. This event has attracted over 1,500 registrants since its inauguration. • An instructional program called “OP 36” where players can experience success by learning the game starting from 25 yards off the green. The goal is to score 36 or lower in nine holes before moving back to 100 yards, then 150 and so on. • Strictly social events include Yappy Hours for our fourlegged friends and Demo and Club fitting days. Enjoy our Fall and Winter Golf Demo Days, putting contests and even a helicopter golf ball drop. Walk or run in our annual 5k fundraiser. Along with weekly barbeque cookouts on Friday and Saturday at the Grille @ The Turn between the driving range and 10th tee. • 18 holes of miniature golf course offers fun for adults and kids of all ages. Our most important promise to our residents and guests: A golfing experience that provides professional and friendly service, mountain views and excellent conditions. The Views Golf Club is one of the best maintained and beautiful facilities in Arizona, thanks to Mike Kropf, Course Superintendent and his dedicated team. We have been awarded “The Best of the Northwest” golf course numerous times. Our best reward is having the residents of Sun City Oro Valley enjoy our facilities. The number of golf rounds, revenue and annual memberships continue to increase. We welcome you to join us for all the fun activities and golf.

Welcome New Neighbors – November

Continued from Page 3 These drawings provide more specific information about actual costs. The SCOV plans are design drawings so we need to proceed with the drawings required for construction. Other possible expenses include legal/accounting fees Oro Valley construction tax, site issues (like the kitchen grease trap pit), design changes and delays. Soft costs cover both expected and unexpected needs, much like home renovations — and often cost more than expected. The good news: the recent Activity Center remodel came in under budget, which gives us confidence. Inflation impact: The Schematic Design Plans assumed 4.5% annual inflation through February, 2026, but builders now use 5% for 2026. Delays increase costs. The two-year delay has already added about $180,000 to the project, assuming fully funded hard costs. Future inflation could raise costs by more than $100,000 per year. Moving Forward We are reviewing what’s needed to open and use the building, while weighing the impact of delaying major HVAC, electrical and other major upgrades. Waiting will reduce what can be done while increasing total costs. This is important for the SCOV community to understand. There will be a more complete presentation to the Board of Directors in January. Stay tuned…..

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Landscaping: Past, Present and Future

SCOV landscaping has long been a showcase of desert-adapted design, with our 17 acres of common areas carefully curated through the pilot project in 2009. That initial effort introduced low-water, low-maintenance plants, artistic groupings and accessible paths, transforming previously monotonous areas into visually engaging spaces for residents to enjoy year-round. Recently, our Common Area Maintenance Supervisor, Mary Kaye Cunningham, ensured that all plant labels were updated, providing an accurate and informative guide for residents interested in learning more about the species and their unique characteristics. Take a stroll around the gravel pathway at Catalina Vista and enjoy the landscaping and informative plant labels. These labels continue to support our community’s commitment to desert-friendly landscaping and sustainable maintenance practices. Looking ahead, we are forming a new task force to develop a master landscaping plan for the community. This plan will guide future enhancements, ensuring continuity with the original design principles while addressing long-term goals for aesthetics, sustainability and functionality. Residents can look forward to an ongoing evolution of our common areas that honors the past work while planning thoughtfully for the future.

One of the policies in the governing document has to do with landscaping and can be found in Article 2, Section 2.18.C.9: All vegetation on any lot shall be maintained so as not to extend beyond the neighboring property lines. Our trees and shrubs are getting bigger as our community ages and they tend to drop more and more debris. As these plantings grow outside your property line, the debris ends up in someone else’s yard adding extra work or cost for them for upkeep. Take some time this month and walk your property to see if your plants are imposing upon your neighbor’s property. Look over those fences to see if your plants are growing through the ornamental iron fencing into someone else’s yard. If your plants of any sort need pruning back to your property line, please talk to your neighbor(s) for permission to enter their property for access if necessary. Of special importance in being a good neighbor is removing the ground debris that your trees and shrubs are dropping onto your neighbor’s yard. Please take additional steps to prune your trees so they do not overhang the sidewalks and roadway. Thank you for all your cooperation in making this community top notch.

January is National Reach Your Potential Month. This month is meant to encourage people to reset and work on becoming their best selves. It's a time to focus on personal growth by setting goals, developing good habits and challenging yourself. Many of you may think you have mastered this month’s theme and are happily enjoying your good habits, personal growth and your confidence to try new things and live life to its fullest. But have you thought of a reading goal this year? Perhaps you want to discover a new author in a genre you like or maybe try a whole new genre. How easy and fun this goal will be as reading for most of us is pure pleasure, no work involved. If you are taking an ILR course, we have end caps highlighting the books pertaining to the ILR’s courses. Books are a fun way we can explore many things with no negative outcome. Well maybe a little consequence, as in my case a little eye strain. But for those smart enough to read large print you could develop more muscle mass due to the tiny bit of extra weight of those books. All kidding aside, I look forward to seeing you at the library and would love to help you reach your literary goal. Please keep an eye on This Week in SCOV postings for upcoming author talks. Happy reading.

Recreation and Fitness- Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Walking Posture

If you are hunching your shoulders and looking down while walking, you are reinforcing very bad walking posture habits. Good walking posture is with the head up and eyes forward. Bad posture can lead to low back pain, neck and shoulder pain and doesn't allow you to take full, complete breaths. It also reinforces the bad sitting posture many of us have from hours in front of the computer. Your time walking should be spent building good posture habits, not contributing to the damage you already do to yourself the rest of the day. Every few minutes throughout your workout, give your shoulders a backwards roll to check that you aren't hunching them. Special Note from the AFC: Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is Thursday, 1 pm, so stop in and sign-up, classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Phone: 917-8073 or email: ldavis@suncityorovalley.com

Architectural Review Committee Board Member and Co-chair Earl Vittitoe Co-chair Dave Olson daveoscov@gmail.com Meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 pm

Everyone has trash cans. Many are kept in the garage and many residents have made investments in order to keep their cans on the side of their homes. Section 2.5 of the Development Standards is pretty clear. “All Trash Containers must be covered and stored on a lot not visible from Neighboring Property or the street.” There are suggested materials that can be used to achieve this. If we can see your trash cans then you have not done enough to hide them. It is not sufficient just to have them behind a gate, short piece of wall, a single bush or behind your primary AC unit. We all know the term, “Out of sight, out of mind.” If you can see blue it’s time to consider an upgrade.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Architectural Coordinator Katy Mosier project@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8058 Steps to Avoid Disappointment

If you are contemplating adding an expansion to your home, please be aware that the steps to gain approval from the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) are a bit more involved compared to the regular ARC submittal process. Please take time to read SCOV Board Policy ARC-006.005 if you plan on building a room addition, a patio cover or a glassed-in patio enclosure. Screened-in patio enclosures are not subject to this process. The biggest difference between the regular ARC process and the home expansion, patio cover or glass patio enclosures process is that it takes more time to get approval. Most expansion projects require a two-step process and neighbor input is allowed for two weeks once the completed final submittal is received. Town of Oro Valley permitting may take additional time. Wait to submit to the Town of Oro Valley until your concept has been approved with a Concept Application to the ARC and the Final Submittal is a go. Making arrangements for ARC approval for a room addition, patio cover or glassed-in patio enclosure as part of your early project planning will help you to start construction sooner rather than later.

Election Committee Pete Coy, Chair

Vote 2026 The Election Committee is preparing for the upcoming vote. Ballots will be sent in mid-February to fill two director positions, as Jane Fairchild and Eileen Buskirk complete their terms. Voting will be electronic unless you’ve opted out of all Association emails. Candidate video interviews will be available in February and a dedicated web page under Trending, Vote March 2026, will include details. Two forums in early March will give residents a chance to hear directly from the candidates. Watch for more information as election time nears.

Emergency Response Committee Chair Dave Olson daveobuilds@gmail.com

How can I get notifications of emergency situations including wildfires and flash floods? First, when the National Weather Service issues certain weather warnings, cell towers will broadcast the alert to all connected cell users. Other applications for your phone are available. Weatherbug provides additional weather alerts including flash flood and lightning warnings. Watchduty provides alerts for nearby wildfires. You can also set other locations if you want to keep

I honestly don’t remember everything about my 40th birthday. I do remember that I thought it was a big deal at the time and that to celebrate, my wife threw me a wonderful birthday party. Perhaps the same was true for your 40th? In 2027, Sun City Oro Valley will turn 40 years old. A Service and Support Committee, reporting to General Manager Sandy Seddon, has been created to plan and coordinate a birthday celebration in honor of this milestone event. The vision is to: 1) celebrate ALL things SCOV; 2) bring the community together for a common goal; 3) raise some money for various clubs in SCOV and to support resident activities. The thought is to kick things off shortly after the first of 2027 and have a month-long multitude of events to celebrate the community. We envision multiple sports tournaments, multiple performances by talented residents in the community, exhibitions by the talented artisans living here and so much more. The festivities will conclude with a gala event(s) to be held on February 13, 2027. At this point, we have way more ideas than we do details but, as we formalize plans, we will communicate them with the entire community through This Week in SCOV, the Tipster and the SCOV website. If you’d like to be part of this exciting planning process, please contact R. J. Ley.

Mary Murek is not new to the world of pottery. Since moving to Sun City, Mary’s love for pottery continued focusing on hand-built pieces. Mary then expanded her efforts to include water colors and ink and photography. Stop by the Gift Shop and see Mary’s work, featuring pottery dishware and Mary Murek and Bill Norton decorative items. Her water colors are depicted in the form of original notecards, desert scenes, whimsical flowers and funny birds. Bill Norton starts with a piece of raw material (wood). That piece of wood will become the focus until it becomes clear as to what it needs to be. While working on that next piece, the design can dramatically change. Bill enjoys working until his mind, heart and hands are happy with what his eyes see. You can see Bill’s work at the Gift Shop and where his goal is to never have two projects that look the same.

Government Affairs hosted OV Police Chief Kara Riley on Wednesday, November 12 for Coffee with a Cop at The Views Restaurant lounge. This is an annual event in which the Chief and members of her staff have open discussions with members of our community. On Saturday, November 13, we assisted the Republican Club in hosting a town hall with State Representative Rachel Keshel. SCOV residents provided questions in advance to Representative Keshel on legislation that directly impacts our community. She was not prepared to address those questions, but brought lobbyist Dennis Legere to explain the legislation that he actually wrote. Representative Keshel explained her position on issues that are her priority (family law) and took questions on many other topics. More events are planned including a community forum with Chief Riley. 2026 is an election year and the committee will be working to bring opposing candidates for debates and public forums.

We toured most of them (thanks to Nancy Vander Ark and Mike LaBarbera) and gathered insights into what active retirees really want. As we welcome a brand new year, it's not too late to set a New Year’s resolution if you haven't already. Let's commit to taking pride in ourselves, our homes and our community. While many of us already do this, imagine how much more beautiful our neighborhood would be if we all made this effort together. Our committee has truly enjoyed the lovely holiday decorations that have brightened our community over the past few weeks. Just a gentle reminder that seasonal decorations should be taken down by January 15. We appreciate all residents who continually take pride in the appearance of their property and we are thrilled with how our community looks as we step into the New Year. Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous 2026.

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf mkropf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

Happy New Year. January is the time of year when the normal activities in the golf course maintenance department really slow down. The cooler temperatures decrease the growth rate of the grass, so the amount of turf maintenance is reduced. Less fertilizer, water and mowing are required for maintaining good turf health. This allows our department to catch up on other areas of the golf course that we don’t get to spend a lot of time on during the rest of the year. Several years ago, we started root pruning around tee complexes and rough edges with our trencher. The turf on some of these turf areas struggle with transition in the early summer due to heavy golf traffic, limited sun from overhanging trees and tree roots that compete with the grass roots for water and nutrients. Over the years these branches are continually trimmed, but the roots aren’t removed very often. The trencher cuts the tree roots outside the turf edge which prevents the roots under the tree from competing with the grass roots. This winter we will again be going around tees that are heavily impacted by nearby trees. Other items that will be addressed during this time frame include moving sprinkler heads to the cart path on hole #4 to improve irrigation efficiency, raising sprinkler heads in fairways that have sunk due to yearly sand topdressing and dealing with chronic wet areas near greens and surrounds. This work will be performed around play so be careful of workers.

Coni used cardboard as the armature. The cardboard is 90 degrees and came from packing materials from a table she purchased. The cardboard was the protector for the table’s legs. Coni attached a fine mesh wire to the cardboard to help the polymer adhere to the armature. She then applied the polymer and added definition. Her inspiration for the masks comes from Navajo kachinas. Coni used metallic acrylic paint over the polymer and she added various other natural materials such as feathers, beads and cactus skeleton.

New Year = new hobby? Whether you’re drawn to the play of light through colored glass or the artistic satisfaction that comes with making something by hand, creating stained glass or fused glass pieces as a hobby is rewarding and accessible. The possible variations for creating objects with glass colors, shapes, sizes and textures has captivated people since the early Egyptians and Romans. Why? Find out by stopping by our studio or visiting our website to see examples of our work. Our introductory classes for both stained and fused glass include instruction, use of equipment and all materials. In addition, a variety of classes, social events and contests are offered at various times throughout the year. The only thing you need is time, imagination and a willingness to learn.

Vistoso Photo Club President Garry Buck GarryBuck1@gmail.com Club information www.vistosophotoclub.weebly.com Club Photos at https://tinyurl.com/VPC-Photos

There is no such thing as “the best camera,” only the right camera for a specific purpose. A camera is a tool, nothing more. What matters is the subject, the conditions and how the images will be used. Wildlife photographers need reach and weather sealing. Portrait photographers may prioritize resolution and color depth. Street photographers often value small, quiet Lime Butterfly cameras. Travelers look for light weight and versatility. Sometimes the camera in your pocket is perfect because it’s there when you need it. In the end, creative vision matters far more than technical specs. The right tool simply serves that vision. Note: Our next program is Wednesday, January 14. The theme will be ‘Your 5-Star Photos’. Our next competition will be, Wednesday January 28, the subject is ‘Open’. Both events are 6 pm, Catalina Vista, Non-residents are invited to attend.

Details are carefully selected and the poem is deliberately brief, enhancing its impact. Pictures and stories. His name said out loud. Hearing songs we sang together. Conscious Aging Pres. Phyllis Burks 520-245-2785 SCOVConsciousAging@gmail.com Wed., 9-10:30 am, AC/Navajo

Conscious aging is about the inner work of reorienting ourselves as we turn from our roles we assumed while managing careers and tending families, to turning inward and cultivating a deeper awareness of who we are now. Our goal is to discover how to face the known and unknown challenges of aging. With the help of our community, we are pondering the questions: Who am I? What are my values? What do I believe? What matters most to me? This inner work is supported by mindful movement such as qigong, guided meditation and book study that draws from psychology, sociology, metaphysics, philosophy and meditation. Conscious aging is about accepting who we are now. Our meetings consist of a short period of easy mindful movement, followed by guided meditation and discussion. Please contact Phyllis for information or email the club.
