Our Lucky Life in SCOV

It is hard to believe, but yet another whole year has slipped by. It didn’t go totally unnoticed, but personally, I am positive there couldn’t have been a full 12 months since the last time I sat down to write this Tipster ar ticle for the December Tipster. Still, here we are looking back at another Thanksgiving and forward to December holidays with shopping and parties and more shopping and... well, just everything that is crammed together in what seems like just a week and a half. Before you even have time to catch your breath, you are looking at New Year’s Eve. Even worse, every year you seem to lose a little more out of this little wisp of time that starts with a turkey dinner, and in what seems like just an instant, sends you scooting out into a brand new year.

Now, I don’t know where you will find time in this mad rush, but this is the month where you are supposed to take stock and reorganize your life to keep it under control so that next year will be better. Along with all of that, we need to find an other couple of moments to recognize how good we really have it here in SCOV and the good old USA and to express our thanks. My wife and I have traveled extensively abroad, and we haven’t found another country in the world that even begins to compare to the US, in spite of its faults. We are so lucky to live here in SCOV and in this unbeatable weather of Southern Arizona, where we don’t have to worry about winter and shoveling snow and slippery streets. This endless sum mer is really great. So, find the time to recognize your good luck and all of your blessings, say a little thank you to whom ever you think is responsible, then go out and enjoy the sea son. Happy holidays and a prosperous and enjoyable New Year to all!

Let’s Hear It for the Yea-Sayers

We often hear about “naysayers” and their effect yet don’t often hear about “YEA-sayers” and their effect. I’d like to write today about this formidable group of residents that are the yea-sayers. You can recognize them not only by their numerous positive comments but also by their many positive works and kind nesses that improve our community.

Yea-sayers generally like to gather in groups. Here are a few places the yea-sayers can be found: attend any one of the 13 standing, advisory or ad hoc committees or the 10 service and support committees; attend or participate in any of the 201 clubs or get to know other residents by attending or participating in any of the Association or club activities or events.

You will recognize yea-sayers by the subjects they dis cuss. Examples could include: how to improve the com munity at SCOV; how to improve our aging facilities; the positive events or activities that have recently taken place or those that have yet to take place; what new or better events and activities SCOV could have and how they can help the Board, staff, committees or other residents.

Whatever the yea-sayers are discussing, you can bet it is positive and in the best interest of the community. They build up, not tear down our community, staff or other resi dents. They create the sustaining atmosphere that brought most of our residents to this wonderful community. They will talk up the community, facilities, residents and staff. Their actions and talk help the community to not only maintain its positive character but also help sustain the property values of every home. I give a standing ovation to the YEA-sayers in our community!

I wish you all a very happy holiday season.

A College Campus of Our Own

INSTITUTE OF LEARNING IN RETIREMENT

ight here in Sun City is an array of college-level courses provided in two terms each year. The Institute of Learning in Retirement (ILR) is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2023 having provided hundreds of courses to enthusiastic residents eager to stay intellectually engaged in learning.

Sun City is a remarkable gold mine of opportunities. If you never had time to improve your golf game, work on your ten nis serve, try line dancing or pickleball, become a birder, try making a pot or learn to play chess, all of that and more is right here. Finally, there is time to explore and ponder new possibilities.

For more than 20 years, ILR has created on-site, an envi able array of classes you would find in any community col lege. ILRs got their start from a group of New Yorkers who had returned from an Elderhostel trip to Europe. “Do we re ally need to go all that distance,” they asked, “when we could do so much learning right here at home?” Soon, several New York City area universities were sponsoring programs, then Harvard, then Yale, and a movement of adult learning was launched. Today, there are more than 400 ILRs across the country, some affiliated with universities and some not.

The University of Arizona initiated a program back in 1987 that caught the attention of several SCOV residents. There were 17 regular participants in SAGE (Seniors’ Achieve ment and Growth through Education) driving down to the UArizona campus every week. But, it was taking longer to find parking spaces and hike across campus to class. Gene Bammel’s term as co-president of SAGE was ending, and the initial attraction of weekly driv ing was waning. Gene, his wife Lei, and Ruth and Milt Damlich met to consider creating a satel lite program here in SCOV.

ILR was char tered in 2003 with a set of by-laws; Gene Bammel was president, Jane Arndorfer vice-president, Lei was secretary, and Milt, as treasurer, deposited a small check to their new checking ac count on April 15, 2003. It has been a phenomenal success. Sun City ILR now has over 700 members and is still growing. Hundreds of volunteer instructors have taught in the fields

Rof history, philosophy, religion, geology, culture, literature, anthropology and psychology. A continuing draw is the opportunity to learn something new in a setting with neigh borhood friends.

This year, on our 20th anniversary, we are launching sev eral new initiatives. “Learning on the Move,” created by Alice Hutchison, provides off-site trips in the Tucson area sever al times during both the fall and winter terms. Courses called “2+” consist of two in-class presenta tions with an optional off-campus visit. Debbie Kotlarek is introduc ing letterboxing. Jerry Freund from Medicine Man Gallery is explaining the Navajos’ Spider Woman myth and distinctive Na vajo weavings from early 20th century trading posts. Bob Kitch, an international competitor in the atlatl, is introducing us to the growing sport of primitive weaponry.

The weekly Friday Forum will provide challenging, some times controversial topics for thoughtful listeners to consid er more than one perspective: “Was the Wild West Really Wild?” with guest professor Eduardo Pagan from Arizona State University, “The Complex Legacies of the Spanish Colonizers” with guest professor Michael Brescia from UAri zona and “The Mexican Border: What’s Really at Stake?” with guest presenter, John Fife from the coalition of No More Deaths.

Thanks to the leadership of Randy Myerson, ILR has created a Tech Com mittee, chaired by Harold Wood, to provide opportu nities for classes to be both videotaped and Zoomed as hybrid offerings.

The regular winter term of courses begins in Feb ruary. Videotaped pre views with the course instructors are on the ILR website www.suncityilr.com. Topics include: “The Roaring Twenties,” “American Civil War,” “Earth, Wind and Fire,” “America in Vietnam,” “Fun with the Chinese Language” and “LBJ and Lady Bird: America’s Power Couple.”

On Thursday, December 15, ILR is hosting a holiday tea for all SCOV residents to introduce the winter courses and an opportunity to meet the instructors. Attendees can register for courses on the spot. Additionally, we will rec ognize the founders of Sun City ILR and others who have contributed so much to its success. See Coming Events, page 12.

Did You Know?

Development Standards 2.18 contains landscaping infor mation such as a Prohibited Plant List and an Approved Tree List. It also includes directives about how these plantings should be maintained. On several corner lots, tree branch es are blocking street signs and/or overhanging sidewalks and the street. Because our community is 36-plus years old, there are many trees and shrubs that have grown extra large over the years.

This is a reminder that it may be time to take a good look at some of those larger specimens in your yard and decide if they need to be pruned back or even removed. Root sys tems of these older trees are lifting foundations, driveways and sidewalks. There have even been reports of damage to sewer systems, which can be quite costly to repair.

Neighboring tree height and the disappearance of views often encourages neighbors to talk with each other and come to a mutual understanding that makes both parties happy. Enjoyment of our mountain views is part of why we live here, but shade is also important. Perhaps seeking a balance be tween our need for shade and the size of trees in our yards is something to consider when planning for pruning this year.

SCOV Library - Michelle Mooney www.suncityorovalley.com/amenities-facilities/library Online catalog: https://evolveopac.infovisionsoftware.com/suncityorovalley mmooney@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8083

The Library is offering two author events and a holiday book sale this month.

Author Wynne Brown will present a visual journey through the remarkable life and work of Sara Plummer Lemmon (Mount Lemmon’s namesake). Both Sara and her husband traveled throughout the Southwest and documented new plant species. Unfortunately, most of Sara’s journals and ar tistic illustrations were lost in a fire at her home, and those materials housed at the California Academy of Sciences Building were lost in the 1906 earthquake and fires. Wynne Brown has done an exceptional job researching and documenting Sara’s lifetime of adventures and exploration in her new book, The Forgotten Botanist.

The Library welcomes back local author Leo W. Banks to talk about his new novel .45 Caliber Perfume. This original, darkly funny new crime novel is set in the Arizona desert. Leo Banks is the recipient of the Western Writers of America 2018 Spur Award for Best First Novel and Best Contempo rary Western for his book Double Wide. See Coming Events on page 11 for details of both December author presenta tions.

The holiday book sale is scheduled for December 15 through 23. Watch “This Week in SCOV” for a sneak preview of items for sale. Thank you for your continued support of our local community library.

Perfume or No Perfume

The question of whether you should wear perfume to the gym is another one of those topics with conflicting opinions. The air in the gym is sometimes filled with the results of us ers’ efforts, especially during peak times when everyone is trying to grab the last treadmill or heading off to the aerobics class. People are sweating. People are breathing heavily.

Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

Seeing a couple dozen submittals each month, we can safely say that home improvements are still happening. That said, there are challenges in finding some materials, such as white roof tiles. They are no longer being produced, and the available supply is dwindling. Another example is planning to expand an existing paver patio using identical blocks. There have even been comments surrounding the availability of the slump block and scratch block that is used in our com munity. Luckily, product has been found, and the projects are moving forward.

If you are making plans, be aware of material availability. If it becomes difficult to find an exact match and you located

a suitable alternative, reach out to the Architectural Review Committee. We can have a discussion on the option(s). There may be options that other owners have found which could provide insight for your planning.

Election Election 2023

The Election Committee is preparing for another election cycle. Ballots will be sent in mid-February. There are two Di rector positions to be filled. The vote will be electronic unless you have opted out of all electronic communications from the Association. If you vote by hard copy, the ballot must be mailed to the address listed on the return ballot envelope. The Association is no longer accepting ballots in the Admin istration office.

The “Meet the Candidate” video interviews will provide the opportunity to view and listen to the candidates. There will be a web page listed under Member Services – Vote March 2023 with information.

February plans are to have at least two forums where questions will be asked of the candidates, so you can as sess their understanding of and passion for SCOV. These forums will also be available in video format on the SCOV website. If you would like to submit candidate questions for consideration by the Election Committee, please bring them to the Administration office.

More details on the candidates and initiatives will be pro vided as we get closer to the election.

Your donations and membership to Friends of the Library (FOL) fund these purchases. Not only do we sup port the Library, but we provide wonderful events for mem bers and the whole community.

Returning to clay in retirement, the pieces made by hand are her favorites. Her work is both utilitarian and decorative. “I love angels and birds, drawing my own folk art and whimsical designs.”

Linda’s mother-in-law encouraged her to begin making jewelry. Linda said, “I love creating a new piece of jewelry from looking at the colors of clothing, flowers and floral bou quets. I design with trendy or classic themes, fun or romantic moods. I also created a personal design I call Dimensionz. When you see the design, it appears to be somewhat dimen sional.”

Due to supply chain issues that have impacted SCOV homes undergoing renovation, there won’t be a Home Tour in 2023. Look for the return of our biggest fundraiser, a new and improved Home Tour, in 2024. For more information on all these wonderful events closer to the dates, call, check Coming Events and “This Week in SCOV.”

Due to the success of the event, the Government Affairs committee will work with the department to establish a re peating schedule for these events. As the end of 2022 approaches, the Neighborhood Pride Committee wishes you a most happy holiday season. Eigh teen years have passed since our committee was formed, and our community looks absolutely beautiful. As a commu nity, we should indeed feel proud of the way we look, not only to neighbors and ourselves, but also to those individuals who visit with the thought in mind to buy and move here. We sincerely thank you for your cooperation in helping to make SCOV such a wonderful place in which to live. Enjoy the holidays, your families, your friends and neighbors, and especially our beautiful community.

Seasonal residents are returning, and we’re delighted to see them. As it’s getting dark earlier, check your outdoor lights to make sure they’re working. The Posse board wishes everyone a very safe and happy holiday season. Join our ranks and support our community. For information, contact Linda Simōn.

Properties

Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com

Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1 and via Zoom

We hope you’ve noticed the refreshed signs at SCOV buildings. The large signs with the brown background and white letters were looking tired. The brown steel background panels on the signs weathered, faded and oxidized over the years. Jack Evert, working on behalf of the Properties Com mittee, coordinated the effort to restore the signs including contractor selection, scope of work and project monitoring. Several solutions were considered, and the decision was made to remove the letters and background panels, refur bish or replace them, and then reassemble them on site. The light shades on some of the signs also oxidized and will be removed, powder coated and replaced. The refur bished signs look considerably better and present a clean, refreshed appearance to our residents, guests and prospective home owners. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. Our recent meetings have been in person and via Zoom. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086

Season’s greetings to you and your family. We hope you had a great Thanksgiving and wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!

We are grateful for you and are thinking of you during the holiday season. We would like to tell you how much we appreciate your support and look forward to the new year.

Before the year is over, we do not want you to miss the an nual Pro Shop sale. Our special holiday sale will be Friday, December 9. You can pick up that perfect gift or a gift card for the holidays.

Also, our Annual Christmas Toy Drive is from Friday, De cember 2 through Sunday, December 11. We are collecting toys for local kids and families in need. If you bring a guest during this week with a toy(s) valued over $40, your guest plays for free. Any toy(s) and food donations are welcome, whether playing golf or not. We appreciate your kind and generous contributions and support over the years.

As a reminder, the Pro Shop closes at 2 PM on Saturday, December 24, and will be closed Sunday, December 25, to allow our team to spend time with their families.

However, if you have a private cart and would like to play golf on Christmas Day, you are more than welcome. There will be no scheduled starting times. Also, the driving range is available to hit practice balls if you have a prepaid range card. On New Year’s Eve, the Pro Shop will close at 2 PM and will be open normal hours on New Year’s Day.

We again wish you a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Year! Director

December is historically the time of year when the temperatures get cold enough to start having frost. Here is a reminder on what frost does to the grass and procedures to follow when a delay occurs.

Walking or driving on frosted grass causes damage to green leaf tissue, which eventually leads to the grass dying. When the non-overseeded areas go dormant and turn brown, they are no longer susceptible to frost damage, but the overseeded fairways and tees may be

damaged. If the temperature is cold, but the frost is not that bad, we might not have a delay, but instead the golf carts could be restricted to the cart path for a determined amount of time. If the frost is more severe, the delay will reflect the earliest time the golf course can be prepared for golf and ready for play to start. It depends on whether greens need to be mowed or pins need setup.

Additional reminders: The driving range tee and chipping area have overseeded grasses, so they will also be impacted during a frost delay. Please don’t walk or drive on these areas while waiting for the frost delay to end. The Pro Shop will be notified when the practice facilities are ready for use.

This year the Association phone system was changed, which resulted in losing the dedicated frost line. Currently, the Pro Shop will be informed of any delays or cart path restrictions, and they will send an email alerting golfers of the delay.

If you wish to donate bags, flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one, no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Do not include newspaper bags as they do not work for this project.

Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. odelers

Everything has a beginning, and so it was for our glass club. Two women, Wye Mace and Doris Ray, put their heads together, took glass making classes and formed the Fused Glass Club in 2006. The ladies be gan teaching classes, purchased a kiln in 2008 and fired items every night. Now that was true dedication. Wye previously worked with stained glass for 15 years in Michigan. She was also an active participant in a basket weaving guild, something she is looking forward to doing when time allows. Wye likes working with our new kilns and appreciates that they are able to hold larger projects. There are not enough ways to say thank you to this very talented lady. Thanks for your help, inspiration and motivation. Please visit us. We promote imagination.

ILR - Institute of Learning in Retirement

Pres. Mary Lee Fitzgerald fitzgerald.marylee@gmail.com www.suncityilr.com

The fall ILR term ends in December with a huge thanks to both in structors and participants. We had registration numbers not seen for several years. All courses have returned to in person. The SCOV ILR, unlike other adult learning programs in the Tucson area, does not pay its instructors. All volunteer their time and immense experience to provide first-rate courses for a minimum fee, right here in SCOV. Many of our instructors are retired college professors, some with published books and articles. Patrick Hearden, who is teaching “America in Vietnam” in February, taught diplomatic history at Purdue for 30 years; his book, The Tragedy of Vietnam, is in its fifth edition and in use at West Point.

These books serve as inspiration for spring classes

All winter term courses are posted on the ILR website and registration is open until Saturday, December 31. Join us Thursday, December 15, Catalina Vista, for the winter pre view of courses. Come and meet the instructors and register in person on-site. Learn more about our club on page 4.

Poets Corner

Sharyn Rafieyan 520-331-1092 srafieyan@comcast.net Mon., 10 AM-Noon, WC1

Elegies are frequent themes in poetry. Club member Har vey Gardner dedicated this passionate lament to his father, Charles D. Goldberg, Bugler 1st Class, U.S. Army, WWII:

Reveille

“His eau de cigar still haunting/its mouthpiece, Dad’s bugle sits mute, more a tarnished antique candlestick/than a fear some battle horn.

Its looping, brassy u-turns will/never light a flame, stir a heart, sound a cry, lead a charge, as/would one stiff-lipped, red-faced blast, no matter how mangled or flat.

So wake up you old brass/bugle, howl and shriek…and bring my daddy back.”

This poem is particularly poignant, focusing on the son’s loss and even anger at the missing parent. Sometimes sadness can be lessened by expressing it. But December should be a time for gladness and happy family gatherings.

Members of the Poets Corner have happily resumed meet ing in person. Join us.

The AARP has once again requested the use of the Tech nology Lab for their two, week-long, annual AARP tax prepa ration training. In the spirit of cooperating with other clubs and organizations, we have granted this request in years past, and our board will continue to do so if requested. Be cause the doors to the Technology Lab will be locked during this period, all calls to the Help Desk will be scheduled at a different location. While the Gila Woodpecker is by far the most common wood pecker in SCOV, the Red-shaft ed Flicker (the western form of the Northern Flicker) shows up quite often, too. It is usually seen foraging on the ground, because its main diet consists of ants. With reddish underwings in flight, it may be found throughout western North America, year-round in Arizona, but only in the summer in the cooler climes.

We are a 100-plus member, activity-oriented group, and all SCOV residents are invited to join us on our field trips (we carpool) to learn more about the birds here in Arizona.
