Association News From the Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online. Board meetings are open to residents.
Board of Directors - Leslie Chace Leslie Chace 530-640-2295 chace.scov@gmail.com We CAN Come Together as a Community
The Plaza Task Force was formed to research and recommend two revitalization plans to the Board of Directors. Plan A is a Plaza Revitalization including the Lion’s Head Fountain. Plan B is a Plaza Revitalization without the Fountain. We need to hear from residents about what is important to you. There are two meetings scheduled soliciting input from residents. We need to know what you want to have included in the project and what you don’t want. Make your voice heard! Let’s come together and look at what’s in the best interest of our community and residents. Do you want a quiet reflective area, a place for meeting, a place to visit and chat, music events on stage or just leave the area as is. The possibilities are endless. We need your thoughts and imagination. The valuable work done by the LHF Task Force will be reviewed to see if we can improve on the plans. Zoning requirements must be addressed. Research will help determine how to manage OV Town mandates. Following these two open meetings we will ask committees to help. We need advice from the Landscape Task Force for drought tolerant vegetation. Architectural Review can assist with specific requirements for water storage, fountain remodel, etc. Finance can advise on funding this project. Partial funding will come from Asset Reserve, while some will require capital improvement money. Other committees may be contacted when needed. We’re thankful to have so many talented residents working with committees and volunteering their time. Businesses and agencies will undoubtedly be consulted as well regarding feasibility and cost projections included in the plans. There is a lot of work to be done and many people will be involved. We welcome residents to join us and continue participating as plans progress. The Task Force looks forward to your input. If you cannot attend meetings, please contact a Task Force member.
Board/GM Chat Thursday, October 8, 9 am General Manager - Sandy Seddon Sandy Seddon sseddon@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080
Fall has arrived, bringing many residents back home after the summer. We hope you had a wonderful summer and are enjoying reconnecting with friends and neighbors throughout the community. A friendly reminder that our website features a Project Page where residents can follow major community projects, check their status and see what has been completed and closed out. If you have not visited this page, take a look. It is interesting to see everything happening throughout the community and the momentum we have built. That progress is a reflection of our great volunteers and dedicated staff working together to get things done. Thank you to everyone who contributes their time, ideas and hard work. The Goats Are Coming Back! Many of you enjoyed watching the goats when they were here earlier this year helping clean out some of our washes. We are pleased to announce that the four-legged landscaping crew will return in December and January. Keep an eye out for them, we hope you get a chance to watch them in action. There is a lot happening in our community and it’s exciting to see the progress we are making together. Welcome back and have a wonderful October! Important October Dates.
2025/2026 Audit
Please check the community calendar for the dates and times of both meetings. Our CPA firm, CliftonLarsonAllen LLP (CLA), will present the 2025/2026 audit at the Finance and Budget Committee meeting. The audit will then be presented to the Board of Directors for acceptance.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! SCOV Solar Project Celebrates Its 10-Year Anniversary By Dale Foster
SCOV’s solar project is about to turn ten years old and it’s a moment worth celebrating. What began in 2016 has grown into one of the most successful improvements to our community. Beginning on November 1, 2016, the original solar installation totaled 426 kilowatts (kW) across eight facilities. Solar panels were placed on top steel parking structures in the Mountain View complex with the rest mounted onto rooftops. Development and installation was at no cost to SCOV through a partnership with a Tucson based solar company. SCOV purchased this solar energy at a rate slightly below TEP’s prices and the cost savings totaled about $75,000 over the first five years. During November of 2021, the SCOV Board made a major step by purchasing the solar systems for $664,000. This boosted annual savings to $145,000. In 2025, a ninth solar system was added at the AFC increasing our solar capacity to 532 kW. A typical SCOV home system is 5 kW. The program has now saved our community about $775,000 with current annual savings near $175,000. These solar panels have been exceptionally reliable. Of the 28 electronic inverters, three have needed replacement and were covered under warranty. They consistently produce as much clean energy today as a decade ago. After 10 successful years, this project has been widely appreciated by residents and visitors who value costs, shaded parking, indoor facility comfort and the progressive spirit that sets our active retirement community apart from the others.

Board Study Session Tuesday, October 13, 9 am, Auditorium
The Board of Directors will hold a Study Session in the Auditorium. Our architect will present the layout and design concepts with a cost estimate for the Copper Center. This is a Study Session, so no vote or action will be taken. Residents are welcome to attend and observe the presentation and discussion.
Community Workshop Thursday, October 29, 1 pm, Auditorium
Residents will have an opportunity to participate and provide input at a community workshop regarding the Copper Center plans and concepts. We encourage everyone to attend and share their thoughts.
Copper Center Update Theda Ellis, 302-388-9798, tellisscov@gmail.com Common Space Initiative: Building for SCOV’s Future
Over the past month, you’ve read about the Common Space Initiative, a comprehensive plan to address SCOV’s growing space needs while updating three of our major buildings. This is the first time in our 40-year history that we’ve taken this community-wide approach. This initiative will: • Add space for groups that need it across three buildings: Fused/Stained Glass, Silver & Lapidary, the sewing clubs, Wood Shop, Clay Club and Library, Loan Room and Costume Closet. • Provide space for groups that have been waiting, including Carvers and Table Tennis. Return space to the Golf Program. • Update three major SCOV buildings to better serve our community. The first project is the Copper Center, purchased in 2023 and now fully paid for. It will house clubs and services moving from the Artisan Center, Welcome Center, and Cart Barn. This, in turn, sets the stage for remodeling the Artisan Center to accommodate growing Clay Club and Wood Shop participation, to expand the Gift Shop and provide dedicated space for Carvers. The Welcome Center can then expand the Library, the community’s second most-used amenity, and provide additional administrative space. And freeing up space in the Cart Barn for the golf operation. Updating our amenities and buildings is an investment in SCOV’s future. Our location and amenities are our market niche. Let’s build on that strength.
Copper Center Update
Our architects are finalizing the construction drawings, working closely with the work team. The team is focused on maximizing usable space, incorporating recommendations from stakeholders, as well as electrical, structural and mechanical engineers, and preparing for the next steps.
The Town of Oro Valley (the Town) determined that SCOV has actually owned the light poles along the boulevard all along. The Association will therefore be responsible for determining the next steps for the existing lighting. During this process, the Board has approved transferring responsibility for landscaping along Rancho Vistoso Boulevard to the Town. As part of the landscaping transition, the Board is looking for opportunities to reduce water usage and costs and will evaluate turning off five irrigation meters. While reducing irrigation, attention will be given to maintaining the appearance of SCOV’s entry monuments and other key focal areas, with an emphasis on attractive, low-water-use landscaping. The existing light poles are expected to be removed once the Town provides the Association with a Memorandum of Understanding outlining the light pole ownership and the transition of landscaping responsibilities. The Town is tentatively planning to add lighting at the crosswalks along Rancho Vistoso Boulevard, which will provide targeted lighting where it is most needed. You will be kept updated as this project progresses.

When writing a check for the $25 ARC submittal fee or $125 concept application fee, it is important to note that you must make the check out to Sun City Oro Valley instead of SCOV. The bank has refused to accept any check that does not have the full name of the association in the pay to the order of location on the check. Remember to pick up a yellow ARC Project Permit sign to hang in your front window during the period you or a vendor is working on an approved exterior home project. Once you have received written approval from the association, the sign will be available to you at the front reception area of the Welcome Center. Any approved project that is being worked on after July 1, needs this yellow sign posted in a front window so that it may be seen from the street. Please do not trespass on another resident’s property to try and see the yellow permit up close. You have no right to walk onto their property. Questions about this new process can be addressed to kmosier@suncityorovalley.com.

This month the Library is hosting two author visits. On Wednesday, October 7, 10 am, Catalina Vista, we will meet Mary Elizabeth Reynolds. Mary is a local author coming to share her book, The Quake that Drained the Desert. Learn how the aftermath of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake, that struck on May 3, 1887, dramatically altered aquifers in southern Arizona. She describes how this event marked the beginning of the water crisis in the region today and how local governments and nonprofit organizations, on both sides of the border, now work to restore the habitat for wildlife and work to preserve water supplies for future generations. Free tickets for this presentation will be available in the Library starting Wednesday, September 23. The next author we are happy to welcome is our very own Sun City author Christopher Baird. On Thursday, October 22, 10 am, WC3, Chris will share his book, The Long Quiet Siege of America. This novel is a tale of espionage and political intrigue that bridges history to present day. Free tickets will be available in the Library on Thursday, October 8.

Recreation and Fitness- Lonnie Davis Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Exercise Keeps Your Metabolism High
Metabolism naturally slows as you age, so it’s harder to avoid pounds creeping up as the years pass. Luckily, scheduling regular workout sessions helps you increase the total number of calories you burn, helping you maintain a steady, healthy weight. You’ll torch more calories if you add in resistance training to your routine at least a few times a week, since working out with free weights or doing bodyweight exercises helps build muscle mass. The more muscle you have, the higher your calorie burn is and it stays higher all day long, even after you’ve stopped exercising. Special Note from the AFC: Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held Thursday, 1 pm, so stop in and sign up. Classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis hours of operation on page 2. Phone: 917-8073 or email: ldavis@suncityorovalley.com

Architectural Inspection Group Lisa Sandrock 520-917-8072 lsandrock@suncityorovalley.com
When a home in Sun City Oro Valley is listed for sale or goes into escrow, the Architectural Inspection Group (AIG) plays an important role in the process. AIG conducts an exterior inspection of the property to help ensure that the home and surrounding property comply with the community’s current architectural standards and guidelines. The inspection helps identify items that may need attention before the sale is completed. The inspection includes the home’s exterior, landscaping, fencing, paint, walls and other visible improvements that are subject to community standards. If an issue is identified, the homeowner may be notified so it can be addressed. Homeowners can help make the selling process smoother by keeping their property well maintained and making sure that any exterior improvements have received the appropriate approval from the Architectural Review Committee (ARC), when required. AIG inspections are an important part of maintaining the appearance and standards of Sun City Oro Valley while helping provide buyers and sellers with a clear understanding of the property’s compliance during the sale process. If you are considering selling your home, it is a good idea to review your property and address any potential issues before listing it. Taking care of these items in advance can help avoid unexpected surprises later in the sales process.
Architectural Review Committee Board Member and Co-chair Dave Olson Co-chair David Holleman, dlholleman@gmail.com Meetings Second and Fourth Tue, 2 pm
Hi, neighbors. As a reminder, any changes to the outside of a home must be approved by the Architectural Review Committee and/or the Architectural Coordinator prior to work commencing. The Development Standards provide guidance on what can be added or changed, the appropriate locations, construction materials and setback limits. The Tract Declarations provide additional details such as drainage easements and restrictions per unit. Both the Development Standards and Tract Declarations can be accessed on the website under Governing Documents. A home’s unit number can be located on access cards; the first 3-digits are the unit, the last three are the lot number. Please contact Katy Mosier at 520-917-8058 or any ARC member with questions; we are always happy to help.

The FBC has recommended hiring a company called The March Group to manage our investments. The March Group specializes in HOA investment management and has over $1 billion under management. By charter, SCOV’s investments are limited to CDs, money market/savings and US Treasury instruments and are under the purview of the Board Treasurer. Rather than charging fees, the company receives the “investment spread” that is paid by the financial institutions. Selection of an investment manager was one of the FBC’s goals and the result of vetting over several months by a subcommittee, Board Treasurer and the General Manager. The March Group was selected for following reasons: • Provides professional investment guidance to the Treasurer using the latest investment tools and oversight • Provides important continuity from Treasurer to Treasurer • Provides cash management so that SCOV can stay invested to receive the maximum amount of return • Utilizes a field of 700 institutions to select from so we get the highest rate the market currently offers • Allows SCOV to “ladder” investments with different durations of each instrument which can increase our return and meet projected needs

Bring your SCOV card when picking up items and please clean borrowed items before returning them. Your contributions to the SCOV Community Aluminum Cans Recycling Program help support our inventory and services and donations are always welcome. Drop your cans in the blue recycling containers located in front of the AFC and at other locations throughout SCOV. We look forward to seeing you!

Long Range Planning Chair Bruce Hackel 708-846-8686 brucehackel@gmail.com Second & fourth Wed, Oct-May, 9 am, CV/Mt. Kimball & Zoom suncityorovalley.com/group/pages/long-range-planning New Resident Survey: Why Newcomers Choose SCOV
What brings new residents to Sun City Oro Valley? Our Long Range Planning Committee recently asked and the answers offer a great snapshot of what makes SCOV special. The survey reached people who purchased homes between April 2025 and March 2026, generating 109 responses. Community amenities topped the list of reasons for choosing SCOV at 42%, followed by location at 34%. An impressive 60% identified physical activities as their most important lifestyle interest. Friends and family remain our best ambassadors, accounting for 40% of how newcomers first heard about SCOV. The write-in comments may say it best: friendly, happy residents, nearby hiking and biking, safety, a well maintained community, quiet surroundings and financial responsibility all received praise. A special thank you to LRP member Rob Campbell, whose initiative and hard work brought this informative and encouraging survey together. Nice job, Rob!

Upon returning after some time away, you may find that your yard has become overrun with foliage and weeds. It’s essential to address the weeds that have sprouted in the cracks of your driveway, sidewalks and where the cement meets the blacktop. Additionally, any plants that extend over the sidewalks should be trimmed back to ensure the safety of pedestrians. Don’t forget to remove suckers from the base of trees, cutting them down to the ground. If you’ve applied pre-emergent treatments to your yard, you can expect fewer weeds next year; consult your landscaper or pest control expert for guidance. As the cooler weather sets in, take a moment to inspect your mailbox, flag and post for any needed paint touch-ups. If you’re unable to handle the task yourself, you can find a reliable painter through the Consumer Referral Vendor List on our SCOV website, where you can connect with someone who can assist you for a reasonable fee. Welcome back and let’s continue to take pride in maintaining the beautiful appearance of our community.
How to Access and Register
1. Log in to the SCOV Website under Member Services > Information > Loan Room. 2. Go to LOG IN OR OUT on the top menu and select REGISTER to create your new account. 3. Follow the top menu instructions to make reservations as usual. Note: If the new page does not load, clear your browser cache by pressing the F5 key. Temporary Email Debugging Code During the initial rollout, reservation confirmation emails will display visible technical code at the bottom. This temporary measure helps volunteers quickly troubleshoot system bugs. Need Assistance? Printed step-by-step guides are available in the Loan Room. For questions, visit the Loan Room or contact Chair Gay Russell at 520-825-5763.

Posse David Ilse Chair 952-451-3220 dvdilse@gmail.com Monthly meetings first Tue except May-Oct www.suncityorovalley.com>committees>posse
The Posse is a valuable service for SCOV residents. Patrolling all our streets in the evenings, the Posse truck keeps our community safe from outsiders who would like to access unattended homes with bad intentions. Also, if garage doors are open, snakes and rats will find temporary homes there. Sunday nights, if you leave your trash cans out, javelinas might tip them over, leaving a messy problem. Trash cans that are left out are also hard for the Posse to see when coming around corners, creating a potential safety issue for drivers. We currently need more volunteers, as many residents are still at their winter homes or traveling. If you can volunteer, go to the SCOV website, select Committees, scroll down past the calendar, select Posse and fill out an application. If you have questions or need a driver/riding partner, contact Barb McNeill, Squad C Leader: bjmac68@gmail.com or 520-825-0677, no text.

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf mkropf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063
October is the start of a new season of golf at the Views Golf Club. The golf course has been overseeded, so there are different colors of green grass on the fairways and tees. This is a good time to remind golfers about changes from summer to winter play. The divot mix in the containers will be replaced with a sand and seed mix that is only being used on fairways and tees that have been overseeded. If that seed mix is placed in turf areas that are not overseeded, it will eventually leave large green patches in an otherwise brown turf. This applies to all of the roughs and certain tee boxes that haven’t been overseeded. It’s a small step to help reduce extra maintenance required to chemically treat and remove the green spots throughout the winter months. From a maintenance standpoint, it would be better to do nothing with a divot in non-overseeded turf than put seed mix in it. When the golf course reopens following the overseed, there will be a period of time with a cart path restriction. This is due to the young ryegrass and wet conditions. Once the cart path restriction is lifted, the areas on holes 2, 4, 9 and 14 that have been staked from cart path traffic the previous few years will be restricted again. Since implementing these golf cart traffic controls, the turf conditions in these specific areas have dramatically improved resulting in minimal damage the following summer.

Pumpkins are grown and harvested to be eaten while gourds are grown and harvested as decorative or ornamental. If you enjoy carving a pumpkin, you probably will also enjoy carving a gourd. Come visit our gourd artists at the Artisan Center. We are always happy to show you around. Even better, consider joining our club. We have everything you need to get started.

Whether you have a knitting or crochet project in progress, need a little help or just want some friendly company while you work, come join us! One of our ongoing service projects is creating crocheted sleeping mats from recycled plastic shopping bags. These mats are donated to the Sister José Women’s Center for women in Tucson experiencing homelessness. There are several ways you can help at the weekly meetings or at home: • Cut plastic bags into strips • String the strips into plarn (plastic yarn) • Crochet the plarn into 3x6 foot sleeping mats We are always in need of clean, flattened grocery bags from stores such as Fry’s, Safeway, Walgreens, Bashas’, Walmart, Dollar Tree and others. To donate bags, please bring them to a meeting or leave them anytime in the porch basket at Jane Fairchild’s home, 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way.

Many artists are returning from their summer travels. Look around the community for inspiration for an art piece to display. Maybe something as small as a cactus bloom or as majestic as the Catalina Mountains. Perhaps the birds and wildlife will be what spark your creativity.

Wed, 9 am-Noon, Wood Shop makes Cars, boxes and cribs We are 501(c)3 non-profit organization
Welcome to all our seasonal residents. We’re so happy to have you back at SCOV and hope you’ll join us as Seniors for Kids begins another busy season of friendship, creativity and giving. Looking for a break from the heat? Come join us in our air-conditioned sewing room. Spend some time with a wonderful group of volunteers while sewing. If you don’t know how, we can teach you knitting, crocheting and stuffing toys for children in our local communities. There’s always something to do and it’s a great way to meet new friends while helping children in need. October also brings our Angel Love Tree Toy Drive, October 1–16. We invite all SCOV residents to help us make Christmas brighter for local children by participating in this special holiday project. In the Activity Center you will see our tree with ornaments. You can choose a child from the tree, no names, but it will say boy or girl and their wish is printed on the gift card. Once you obtain the gift, please place it in the box by the tree, no wrapping is needed. Any questions, please call one of the above board members. Keep smiling, keep caring and keep making a difference.
Sculpture Dale Foster 520-825-0707 fosterdale1248@gmail.com Mon, 9 am-5 pm, CV/Art Studio
The Sculpture Club meets Mondays in CV/Art Studio. Anyone interested in becoming a member or learning more about our club, stop by Monday mornings or contact Dale Foster. Our sculpture pieces are in the window and showcase in Catalina Vista and the Library for your viewing pleasure. The two pictures were chosen to illustrate sculptures created with different mediums. The picture on the left is of two sculptures by Jan Mirakian made using polymer clay which she painted. Steve Restemayer created the “Steely Dragon” in the picture on the right. He used a metal object he found in a thrift store for the armature. Instead of using clay, he finished the piece with creatively wrapping and shaping the wire to create this unique dragon. Although most of our members create sculptures with polymer clay, we have had other members that have used a variety of different mediums.

We are still embroidering faces, sewing bodies, stuffing them with ‘love’ and filling the shelves for the next set to march out to new families. Nothing has stopped us this year. Life is good and spirits are up. We are looking forward to joy with excitement. We are always looking for volunteers to sit at our table and enjoy creating teddies to put smiles on children who are stressed by the world they live in. We also provide an outlet to remove stress from our volunteers that could be caused by living alone. We value each and every one of our volunteers completely for their love and kindness. This summer we have been sharing our creations with the SCOV community by selling a few bears a month at the Gift Shop and will be selling at the SFK table at the Arts and Crafts Festival, Saturday, November 14. Ask us about our weighted bears. Hope to see you there.

Pyrography is the art of writing with fire. The dictionary defines it as the art or technique of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metalic point. Our club has a dozen precision wood burners along with dozens of different shape tips to acquire almost any design you may desire. It is important to be aware that burnt wood objects will fade in due time if you do not protect the design with an ultra violet finish. Look up the March issue of the Tipster for info on UV products offering this type of protection. Short half-day instructional classes for club members on wood burning will be held in late Febrary or early March 2027. The top and bottom look alike while the center layers, in a colorful manWood Art ner, separate them. The “doughnut” shape is formed using a lathe. When finished, this will be mounted vertically on a wooden base. Once again, we thank Bill Norton for sharing his work with us.

Conscious Aging Pres. Phyllis Burks 520-245-2785 SCOVConsciousAging@gmail.com Wed, 9-10:30 am, AC/Navajo
Conscious aging is about the inner work of reorienting ourselves as we turn from our roles we assumed while managing careers and tending families, inward and cultivating a deeper awareness of who we are now. Our goal is to discover how to face the known and unknown challenges of aging. With the help of our community, we are pondering the questions: Who am I? What are my values? What do I believe? What matters most to me? This inner work is supported by mindful movement such as qigong, guided meditation and book study that draws from psychology, sociology, metaphysics, philosophy and meditation. Conscious aging is about accepting who we are now. Our meetings consist of a short period of easy mindful movement, followed by guided meditation and discussion. Please contact Phyllis for information or email the club.

Access to the Dog Park on Del Webb Blvd. requires a code you receive when you pay your $10 annual dues. Please don’t let anyone in who doesn’t have the code or share the code. The double-gate entry system exists for a reason. Always keep your dog leashed until you’re fully inside the first gate and make sure both gates are closed before letting your dog offleash. This simple step prevents accidental escapes and keeps the park secure for all users. Friendly reminder to please clean up after your dog promptly and keep an eye on interactions between dogs of different sizes and temperaments. A little courtesy and vigilance go a long way toward keeping Fido’s Friends a place every resident and pup looks forward to visiting. Email scovff@gmail.com to join. Where do we go on our field trips and how do we get there? The answer to that question is a bit complicated. First of all, we car-pool, charging 10 cents a mile R/T (riders pay to the driver). We try to have a good mix of local and longer trips where we search for less common species; however, it also depends on the time of year. Birding is not that White-crowned Sparrows. good in the fall, so during that time most of our trips are local. When JanuPhoto credit Steve Holmes. ary arrives, the waterbirds from the north are here, so many of our expeditions range further away. We often travel to Cochise County, but there are also a couple of good nearby locations. Spring is always the best time to enjoy songbirds, so our destinations are more variable and include places like Patagonia, Mt. Lemmon and Tubac. Participation is usually limited to 16 birders per leader. Questions: Contact Peggy above.

In the words of George Washington, “Be Americans. Let there be no sectionalism, no North, South, East or West. You are all dependent on one another and should be one in union. In one word, be a nation.” General Washington’s leadership motivated ordinary men to fight together for a cause they could not see and had not experienced before in their lives: Liberty and Freedom. Washington’s aide, Alexander Hamilton noted, “There is a “The best we can hope certain enthusiasm in Liberty that for concerning the people makes human nature rise above itself, at large is that they be in acts of bravery and heroism.” properly armed.” - AlIn the ensuing 250 years, the call to exander Hamilton arms has been sounded many times, while the American response has been unequivocal. Acts of historic bravery have resulted in the awarding of over 3,500 Medals of Honor since its inception in 1861. Our American military has never wavered in the defense of those being persecuted, while enduring unimaginable conditions. They deserve our deepest thanks and respect. Gun Club meetings resume Wednesday, November 11.

Kevin Harney 717-404-4936 Casual Play Tue, Thu, Sat - Desert Oasis 8-10 am Competitive Play Mon, Wed, Fri - Desert Oasis 8-10 am
Come out and try pop tennis. It’s very similar to tennis, but the courts are slightly smaller, the ball slightly less inflated and we use a paddle rather than a racquet. We play doubles to cut down on exertion and to double the fun. Paddles are available. Good court shoes are a must. Come have some fun with us.
Racquetball Pres. Al Lichaa 520-606-8829 VP. Larry Saeger 715-891-3087 Sec/Treas. Hartmut Wagner 520-780-6148 Mon, Wed, Fri, 7-9:30 am AFC/Racquetball Court
It’s October and the seasonal residents are beginning to return. That means action on the racquetball courts will begin heating up on a regular basis. As we age, racquetball is such a wonderful sport to maintain coordination, balance and overall body movement and strengthening. As an added benefit, racquetball is a lot of fun. So come on out and join us. Don’t be shy. Many of our players hadn’t played for decades before picking it up in SCOV. We are a small club so camaraderie both on and off the court is easy. We play Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 7:30-9 am, AFC. We hope to see you on the court.
Table Tennis Co-Pres. John Smith john@buteos.net Co-Pres. Peggy Smith peggy@buteos.net Tue: Ladies Play: 1:30-2:30 pm, Club Play: 2:30-3:30 pm Thu, Sat: Club Play: 9-10:30 am & 3-5 pm Sun: 2-5pm Club Play. All play is at the Copper Center
In singles table tennis, a serve may be aimed to any part of the opponent’s table as long is it is hit from behind the end line and bounces first on the server’s side. It is also the rule that the ball first be launched from the palm of your hand vertically at least 6” above the table, although not all our players have mastered that. Doubles, however, is slightly different in that the serve must always go diagonally from the server’s right court to the receiver’s right court. After two points, the serving side swaps positions and their opposition serves for two points and then receives for two points. The swap continues until the first team reaches 11 points (winning by two). The hard part is getting out of each other’s way. Come and try it at one of our beginner sessions. Watch for them in This Week in SCOV. Questions: Contact John or Peggy above.

Well, the long, hot summer is gradually easing and the hardcore tennis players welcome back those of you who missed out on the 6:30 am summer activities. One of the best parts of summer tennis has been the patio parties. Tennis first, then fun, food and good fellowship. Once you are back, check out the club website for revised starting times and days of play. If you are a new resident and tennis is your sport of choice, we have open play for players of all talent levels, so come join us. We’ll also be having post-play socials on selected days, so check out our website for times and dates. With the new lighting on courts 5 & 6, evening play is also an option. Our club website (www.scovtennis.com) can fill you in on all of the club activities. Finally, if you’re just looking to work on your game, check out our new Playmate Ball Machine. All of the summer diehards are looking forward to another active and challenging 2026-2027 tennis season.
