From the Board of Directors

Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors

Communications and Social Media

Getting along in a homeowners association (HOA) is all about cooperation and respect.

Remember, we are a community with shared goals. We moved here to enjoy our retirement in a leisurely manner, have fun, socialize, make new friends and participate in the many amenities SCOV has to offer. Listen to your neighbors’ opinions and concerns and then express your opinions. Open communications prevent misunderstandings. Follow the rules and guidelines established in our HOA handbook; they are there to keep our community pleasant for everyone. Attend meetings and activities. Pitch in when you can; even small efforts make a difference. Be a good neighbor. A smile or friendly wave goes a long way. If conflicts arise, address them constructively and kindly.

Social media can be a wonderful way to get information out, but it can also be harmful by fueling conflicts, spreading misinformation and damage to the HOA reputation outside Sun City. It is a powerful tool that can strengthen community bonds or amplify discord.

Let’s make living here in SCOV enjoyable for all by working together. Remember, cooler days are coming.

Board Meeting Etiquette

In a few short weeks, we will have the first Board meeting of the season. I thought it would be a good idea to review some etiquette and rules for our Board meetings.

• Silence your devices to minimize distractions during the meeting.

• For agenda items, raise your hand at the appropriate time as requested by the Board president. When recognized by the Board president, go to the podium and speak. Keep your remarks on topic, concise and respectful. Don’t comment longer than a minute or two. Comments should be directed to the Board of Directors.

• One comment per agenda item.

• Avoid reiterating a comment that has already been addressed.

• No personal attacks. Critique ideas, not individuals. Avoid negative language during discussions.

• Stay calm and professional. Disagreements may arise, but always handle conflicts with composure and professionalism.

Any comments not pertaining to agenda items may be included during the Call to the Audience portion of the meeting. These same etiquette rules apply. Remember, the Call to the Audience is not a question-and-answer time. It is a time to share comments with the Board about items you’d like the Board to know about.

If you have questions, you are welcome to submit them to Board members or the General Manager at any time and they will respond.

Your attendance at Board meetings is always appreciated. I’ll see you there.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle!

More Than a Golf Course

Residents of active adult communities typically expect certain amenities: swimming pools, tennis courts, pickleball courts, fitness center and golf. Sun City Oro Valley has all of these (and more), but The Views Golf Club at Oro Valley offers more than a standard 9-or 18-hole golf experience. The 18-hole semiprivate course is owned by the community and more than lives up to

make your golf experience challenging and fun with a fullservice golf shop, driving range, short-game practice area and lessons to help you improve your game. The championship course is home to men’s and women’s 18- and 9-hole leagues which promote friendly competition and lots of fun. There are several membership options for SCOV residents, or they may opt for daily play at a resident rate.

Don’t golf or haven’t played in a while? No problem. The Views Golf Club can help you get back into the game or start from scratch. The Chip & Putt League is very casual, open to men and women SCOV residents, who play four holes followed by a social gathering at The Views Restaurant. It’s a fun way to learn or ease back into a bigger golf commitment.

A favorite event of SCOV dogs and their people is Yappy Hour, which is free, and takes place about once a month, fall to spring. Wellbehaved dogs and their owners socialize on the driving range. Yappy Hour dates are announced in “This Week in SCOV.”

Hungry? The Grill at the Turn serves up fresh grilled burgers, hot dogs, steaks and chicken midday on Fridays and Saturdays. Golfers can get a quick lunch mid-round, and the Grill is open to everyone for a delicious hot-off-the-grill meal, October to May.

its name. The setting is spectacular, at the base of the Santa Catalina mountains where every hole offers views that will take your breath away.

A hidden gem nestled among the homes of SCOV, The Views Golf Club is frequently rated as the Best of the Northwest by the readers of several publications. It is more than a golf course, it's a sanctuary for golf enthusiasts. The championship 18-hole, par-72 course offers breathtaking vistas and a challenging, yet enjoyable, experience for players of all skill levels. Designed with the landscape in mind, The Views Golf Club brings golfers closer to nature. Each hole offers a unique perspective on Arizona's natural beauty, from sweeping desert vistas to up-close views of native wildlife.

Friendly PGA professional staff are eager to

The Views Golf Club is a unique amenity for all SCOV residents. It provides open space and access to views. Non-golfers can walk or ride the cart paths at designated times before and after regular golf play. Think spectacular sunrises and sunsets. During these hours, wildlife watchers can observe the many critters that reside in SCOV and along the golf course: bunnies, coyotes, bobcats and the ever-present javelina. Bring your camera to record the moment. You might even get to build a snowman if the course closes for one of Oro Valley’s rare snow days!

On a rare snow day, residents were invited to build snow people

Visit The Views Golf Club website www.theviewsgolfclub. com for more information. Stop by the Pro Shop for information about leagues, classes and everything golf.

Gearing Up for High Season

In just a few weeks our winter residents will begin returning, our population grows, excitement about cooler weather permeates the air and committees and Board meetings get into full swing. In anticipation of this phenomenon, start planning to attend Board meetings and committee meetings. Your input is needed and it makes a difference. SCOV is a community whose resident input makes us better. Board and committee meetings are listed in the Tipster, "This Week In SCOV" weekly email and in our online Skedda calendar. A couple of tips for searching for Board and committee meetings: the Board meetings and GM/BOD chats all have SCOV in their name, so search for SCOV. For committees, just search for the word committee. This search trick will help you find these meetings.

ARC Submittals

520-917-8058

There are lots of exterior house changes happening in our community even though many residents have gone away for the summer months. The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) has been very busy reviewing the various projects that have been submitted in recent months. We appreciate your responsiveness in providing the information requested; this helps to to make sure that your renovation meets the dictates of our governing documents.

Controller - Randy Trenary rtrenary@suncityorovalley.com

520-917-8060

The fiscal year for the Association ended June 30, 2023. As in the past, the financial statement for July is not included in the September Tipster due to time constraints for completion of year-end procedures. Financial statements can be found on our website www.scovaz.com and in our SCOV Library.

An audit will be conducted in September, and the complete audited financials will be available on the website and in the SCOV Library before October 31, as mandated in the Bylaws. A copy will also be available in the Administration offices.

Money Matters will return with the October issue of the Tipster. Contact me with questions.

Administrative Manager - Becky Vaughan bvaughan@suncityorovalley.com

Those who visit the SCOV Library are familiar with Michelle Mooney. Michelle just celebrated her second anniversary as librarian in August. Michelle moved from Bend, Oregon, and doesn’t miss the snow and ice. She is a retired schoolteacher of 33 years. Some of her many duties include collection development (choosing, ordering and cataloging new books, videos and audio books), as well as maintaining the puzzle wall and magazine racks. She also invites authors to speak to the community.

According to Michelle, she could not accomplish any of this without the dedicated Library volunteers. She also would like to include a special thank you to the Friends of the Library, the Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation and the Institute of Learning in Retirement for funding all the wonderful books on our shelves.

Her favorite part of her job is fulfilling book requests made on the wish list. Michelle also mentioned that the Ambassadors who conduct tours of SCOV always mention that the Library is one of the most used amenities and one of the best HOA libraries around.

We thank Michelle for her hard work in making the SCOV Library a huge success.

When you are ready to submit an ARC submittal, please be sure that you have thought about the entire project and have given details that will be helpful to the committee members to give you approval. Recently, we have seen an increase in after-the-fact verbal requests that homeowners would like to add once an ARC member comes out to do an on-site inspection. In the interest of addressing these items in a fair and complete manner, please do not verbally add a new item to your submittal at that time with an “Oh by the way, I’d also like to add...”. This can lead to miscommunication and confusion for all. If you forget an item or need to change the original submittal, please submit a new form or paperwork reflecting the change. If it arrives before the ARC meeting cutoff, we will add it to the original request; otherwise, it will be heard at the next meeting. Thanks for your help in this.

Learn How You Can Relieve Overworked, Sore or Tense Muscles

If you regularly exercise, then you are most likely no stranger to muscle soreness that often results from new or challenging workouts. Muscle tension is also a common physical symptom of stress. While a little muscle tension will not affect your day-to-day activities, it’s important to manage your pain so that you can maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid further injuries.

If possible, stretch before and after your workout to both repair and rejuvenate your muscles. This simple activity can decrease stiffness while also promoting flexibility, balance and muscle lengthening.

It’s a common misconception that if your muscles are sore, you should avoid exercise to give your muscles time to recuperate. This is not always the best decision for your body. You should continue to incorporate moderate amounts of exercise into your routine to speed recovery. This will send blood flow to your muscles, leading to muscle relief. It’s important to avoid any type of exercises that could damage your muscles into a further state of soreness.

Ultimately, the most important thing is to listen to your body. When you are experiencing muscle soreness, know your limits and how much your body can handle. Effectively listening to your body’s needs will help the healing process and minimize pain commonly associated with working out.

Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC)

Orientation on how to use the gym equipment is held Thursdays, 1 pm. Stop in and sign up. Classes are limited. Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns regarding the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2.

Wednesday, September 13, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Tuesday, September 26, the AFC spa will be closed for cleaning until 1 pm.

Association Committees

Active Health

Chair Rita Menet 920-659-1428 rita.menet@gmail.com

Next meeting Nov. 7, 3 pm, WC1

This month the Active Health Committee would like to spotlight our community Grief Support Group. Grief, by definition, is a deep sorrow, especially that caused by someone's death.

Have you experienced the loss of a spouse/partner, parent, child, sibling or a friend, or even a beloved pet? Please know that you are not alone. SCOV offers a grief support group comprised of a caring community of residents who have experienced a loss and are in varying stages of grief. Together we will explore the seven stages of grief: shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance and hope, and processing grief.

Our group is ready to meet you exactly where you are. You will learn to choose what is best for you, connect with others and communicate your needs.

The Grief Support Group will resume meeting on the first and third Friday of the month, 2-3 pm, Catalina Vista/Art Studio, beginning in October. Please contact Jane Krabbeler 520-500-3352 jkrabbeler@gmail.com for further info.

Aquatic and Fitness Center Advisory

Muriel DeLaVergne-Brown 541-999-4018 muriel@phaspirations.com

First Wed., 11 am, WC1

The committee will reconvene Wednesday, September 6. Lots of activity has been completed this summer with updates in the pool area, including additional heaters and new flooring in the fitness area. We are still waiting for a couple of back-ordered items, including updated ladders and backstroke flags. The pool and fitness area have been used a lot this summer because of the ongoing heat. We encourage anyone who hasn't visited to stop by and enjoy the facilities.

This next year we will look at updating some of the gym equipment and other items as needed. Thanks for the community input; stay cool.

Architectural Inspection Group

Conveyance Coordinator, Jack Mooney, 520-917-8087, scoroval@ciramail.com

If you are listing your home for sale, according to our governing documents and for legal disclosure in escrow, it is your responsibility to have an exterior inspection done.

While several real estate agents regularly sell homes here in SCOV and know this requirement, not all real estate agents know the rules of our Association or the required inspection process. Please be sure to discuss these with your agent at the time of your listing. This will help avoid confusion and delays in the sale of your home. If you or your agent have questions about the inspection process, contact the Conveyance Coordinator or stop by the SCOV Welcome Center.

There is a color chart that applies, and if you plan to paint your Security Door one of the Southwest Style Colors, then your Front Entry Door cannot be a different Southwest Style Color. These color updates apply only to the Security Door that is against the Front Entry Door. For details, please read Development Standard Section 2.12 along with Appendix C.

Code of Conduct Review Board

Chair Marlene Branz, 618-670-1063 cconduct@suncityorovalley.com

Lately we have been hearing a lot about the importance of respectful communication. Treating each other with respect is key to SCOV being a desirable place to live. That is what the SCOV Code of Conduct is all about. On page 5 of the Owner & Resident Handbook there is a description of the civil behavior expected for residents and guests in SCOV public spaces. You can find the handbook in the members section of the SCOV website. If you would like to file a complaint, look under Member Services in the Members Section of the website.

Community Directory

Chair Blythe Campbell 907-717-7546 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

The SCOV community directory is separate from the administration’s HOA database. Here are four ways the directory is used:

1. Paper Phone Book: For residents who want to be included, it lists names, addresses, phone numbers, hometowns and former occupations. Email addresses are not listed. Published annually.

2. Online Directory (located in the nonpublic area of the SCOV website): For residents who want to be included, it lists names, addresses, units, lots, phone numbers, email addresses, hometowns and occupations. It is searchable and updated monthly.

3. Posse Directory: This confidential listing by address shows names and phone numbers–even if those phone numbers are not listed in the paper or online directories. This allows the Posse to contact you should they see something amiss with your home when they are on their rounds. It is updated monthly.

4. SCOV State and Block/Unit Club Party Planners: If you choose to list your contact information in the online directory, party planners can request this information by unit or state.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List

Susanna Moran scovconsumerservices@gmail.com

The Vendor List is on the SCOV website. After logging in, go to Members > Member Services > Consumer Referral Vendor List.

The Vendor List is currently available for viewing at the monitor’s desk at Catalina Vista. Check the Vendor List often, as changes are made frequently.

Vendors should email Susanna Moran to inquire about applying to be on the Vendor List.

Featured artists this month are Charlene Meyers and Trisha Bergen. Charlene had a varied career in Pennsylvania in different businesses for 17 years. After moving to Hawaii, her photography hobby turned into a business. She spent 20 years on the Big Island, moving to SCOV in 2020. "Now I make fused glass, specializing in ruffled vases, wall pockets and items using plants that I have dried and cover in fine glass before firing. This process is called vitri."

Raised in the Hudson Valley, majoring in art in college, traveling the world, exploring and skiing, Trisha settled in the West, first in Taos, New Mexico. Now in SCOV and totally absorbed in glass fusing, she loves the flexibility and also the restrictions of warm glass. "Brightly colored dichroic glass is fantastic. My glass is hand-cut, hand-shaped. I layer and fire the glass in my kiln, working with it several times until I see what I love."

If you have a sidewalk you would like to have the town inspect, please visit the Oro Valley Public Works website at www.bit.ly/OVPublicWorks. Provide the property address where the sidewalk is located and include any pertinent information about the location. Should you have any questions, you may contact Jessica Hynd, Constituent Services Coordinator/Management Assistant 520-229-4711 Jhynd@orovalleyaz.gov.

Committee members will tour the community in September and October. In addition, the committee is still seeking

volunteers. Please contact Sharon or Bertha if interested.

We are sad to note that founding committee chair, Tempe Johnson, passed away in late July. Tempe and her husband, Dave, were SCOV residents from 1995 until 2022. While both volunteered in the community in many ways, we'll always remember Tempe's smile and the beau-

tiful neighborhoods that remain as her legacy. Our thoughts are with Dave and their three children.

The Posse is always looking for members. There are 2,488 homes in SCOV, and currently we have 114 posse volunteers. Since two volunteers are needed for every patrol and each volunteer is asked to patrol twice a year, that means we only have 114 days covered annually. Many volunteers are gone during the summer, putting more strain on our wonderful volunteers. We ask that you go on patrol two times a year (each patrol is three hours) for a grand total of six hours. Your community needs you. The Posse needs you. For more information on the Posse and how to join, call Linda Simōn.

The Chalk Creek wash is the largest wash in our community. In the past, heavy storms caused damage to the wash and golf course, in addition to threatening homes. To better manage such exposures, the Board formed the Chalk Creek Commission in 2015, with the objective of developing a program to monitor the wash and provide preventive maintenance. Based on a recommendation from the commission, semiannual inspections conducted by the Properties Committee were begun, and a fund was established for preventive maintenance. That fund balance is maintained at roughly $100,000.

It is a testimony to the foresight of the Board in initiating this endeavor that the fund has required only two replenishments of $25,000 each over the last five years to keep it at the target level. Preventive maintenance really does work.

We would also like to note Tempe Johnson's passing. Tempe led the Tipster collation team for many years. Our ability to insert advertisers' flyers directly helps pay for the printing of the Tipster magazine, and Tempe kept the volunteers entertained and the program running smoothly, even during Covid. We miss her and send our condolences to Dave and their children.

Overseeding Schedule and Access Changes at the Golf Course for the Upcoming Season

September marks an essential maintenance period for our golf course when winter ryegrass is overseeded in preparation for the upcoming season. Here is a comprehensive guide to the changes and events that golfers and residents should be aware of.

Golf course closure dates: The golf course will undergo overseeding from Monday, September 18, through Sunday, October 8. It will reopen for play on Monday, October 9. During this period, residents are kindly asked not to drive golf carts or walk on the course to allow the new grass seed to be properly planted and watered.

Driving range and putting green accessibility: During the overseeding process, the golf course will be closed, and the driving range tee will offer restricted access. Players will be able to hit balls off the artificial turf tee line. However, the putting green will remain open for practice.

Pro Shop hours:

• Regular hours (6 am-5 pm) will continue through Sunday, September 17.

• The shop will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, September 18 and 19.

• Limited hours will be in effect from Wednesday, September 20 through Sunday, October 8, with the shop open from 8 am-noon.

Golf cart guidelines: After reopening on Monday, October 9, all golf carts must remain on the cart path for a couple of weeks. The anticipated date for golf carts to resume driving on the grass is Monday, October 23.

Special events and reminders: Look out for special events planned during the overseeding period, including our annual 5k run/walk scheduled for Saturday, October 7.

Your cooperation during this essential maintenance period ensures a top-quality golfing experience throughout the upcoming season. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Growth regulators are applied that limit excess growth as well. The week prior to overseeding, another growth regulator is applied that puts the Bermuda grass into a state of dormancy. This allows the mowers to scalp the Bermuda grass down so the ryegrass seed can better enter the canopy and eventually germinate.

This summer the transition was successful with minimal bare areas that needed to recover. As a result, all the fairways will be overseeded again this year. The green surrounds are starting to establish a healthier Bermuda grass stand from all the sand topdressing and aeration. However, they still need more time to develop a better root system to endure an overseed, so overseed will look exactly like it did last year.

How much golf do you play in a year? Like most clubs, The Views 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club uses the United States Golf Association handicapping system, GHIN (Golf Handicap and Information Network, pronounced “jin”). GHIN calculates and tracks your handicap index and even the number of rounds you play and posts scores during the year.

So how much golf can you play in a year? According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the most holes of golf played in a year is 14,625 by Chris Adam, all at the King Kamehameha Golf Club in Wailuku, Hawaii, from January 1 to December 31, 2012. Chris played 809 full rounds and seven half rounds over the course of the year.

While that record will be hard to beat, joining The Views 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club is a great way to play more golf, meet new friends and have a good time. While there will be only two events in September, the club will start up again in October after the overseeding. Contact John or Cliff, listed above, for more information.

Play Thu. morning

September is when golf course maintenance shifts its priorities. Instead of trying to grow healthy Bermuda grass on the tees and fairways, the focus changes to slowing down the Bermuda grass in preparation for overseeding. Healthy Bermuda grass provides a great seed bed for the germinating ryegrass seed, versus a thin stand of Bermuda grass that exposes the seed to heat and a lack of moisture. However, if the Bermuda grass is still rapidly growing while the ryegrass is trying to establish, it will outcompete the new seedlings and cause the ryegrass canopy to thin out.

The Bermuda grass growth is slowed down in several ways. Fertilization was stopped on fairways and tees around the first week of August. Mowers are vertically mowing to thin the canopy which slows the rapid growth and density.

The summer season for the league is coming to an end with one more league game on Thursday, September 7 followed by the final skins game on Thursday, September 14. The course will close for overseeding on Monday, September 18. Many of us who are around during overseeding will play courses in the area that are open.

On August 10, the league played the infamous Coyote Scramble. Dick Berry, Terry Fowler, Jon Robertson, and Bob “Hit it from the Blue” New-

Golfing experience that provides professional and friendly service, mountain views and excellent conditions. The Coyotes

man were lined up and ready to play. They were all destined to be a Coyote.

As the month winds down, the members who have been gone for the summer will begin drifting back from such exotic environs as Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin and even New York. While they missed the really great (hot) Tucson summer this year, it will be good to see everyone return. The first league day is Thursday, October 12.

If you are a newcomer to SCOV and you want to come out and play in the league, come join us. It is easily done by going to The Views Golf Club website. Be sure to sign up for the hole-in-one insurance, because you never know.

And remember, “Half the time, twice the fun.”

League play Tue. morning

League president Pattie Shock appointed a special committee early this past summer to review and update the terms of play for each of our league competitions. The purpose of this review is to better meet the objectives of the club. These objectives include promoting an interest in 18-hole competition and to provide fellowship through regular play and competitive events, while incorporating fun, social and charitable activities.

The committee is made up of Joann Breslin, Barbara Hall, Debbie Huffman, Darlene Lamb, Pattie Shock and Claudia Svarstad. The committee make-up is representative of our membership in terms of age and tee box preferences. The committee met in July and August. Their final recommendations will be made to the board in September. The board’s final recommendations will be made to the general membership.

It will soon be time to register for our 2023-2024 season. It will be a great season of competition and fun.

As you may have already noticed, our SCOV community is incredibly rich in artistic talents. The Art League supports their art work by coordinating multiple art displays in the Activity Center, Desert Oasis and Library facilities. The displays include items from colored pencil work, photography, clay creations, open arts studio (print making/etching, watercolor, oil, acrylics, fine arts), sculptures, and our newest artwork, quilts.

This summer the Activity Center showcased the Art Sale, with over 130 resident art pieces, many with reduced sale pricing. We hope you will take the time to stop and enjoy the art at the sale, as well as the displays at other buildings.

Thank you to all artists for sharing your art with our community.

Patti Ullmann is one of our newest potters. After attending orientation last fall, she was ready to dig in and create her pieces. “Everyone on the clay and glaze orientation teams was easy to approach with questions. They were extremely helpful,” she said.

One of Patti’s most challenging moments is the design process. As she noted, “I appreciate the individual creativity that is possible, and it does take some time to make that decision.” Among Patti’s special interests are wall pockets. Wall pockets can be filled with either fresh flowers and plants for outdoor display, or be filled with silk plants for indoor use.

Regarding glazing, Patti said, “Glazing the newly made pieces is something of an adventure.” Patti is happy with the colors available in the Glaze Studio and is always eager to try new combinations.

Japanese flower arranging, ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

Knit and Crochet

Jane Fairchild 520-909-5069 janemail11@yahoo.com Mon., 2:30-4:30 pm, Activity Center/Hohokam

If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats.

If you wish to donate bags, flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one; no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Do not include newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. ode

Sculpture

Dale Foster 520-825-0707 fosterdale1248@gmail.com

Mon., 9 am-5 pm, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

The Sculpture Club meets on Mondays in Catalina Vista/ Art Studio. If you are interested in becoming a member or learning more about our club, stop in on Monday mornings or contact Dale Foster. Our sculpture pieces are in the glass case and art room window inside Catalina Vista, a showcase outside the Library and inside the Library.

The photo is a recently completed wall clock, a relief sculpture by Coni Arseneau. This project took more time than she originally expected. The foundation material is MDF board with wire mesh stapled to the board for the clay to adhere. Unfortunately, Coni didn’t consider the expansion and contraction when the board was baked and cooled, which caused bubbles and cracks in the clay. The second time, she used the same materials but applied the product Sculpey® Bake & Bond prior to applying the clay. She still had some small cracks and one bubble, but this time she was able to make the necessary repairs to complete the project.

Seniors for Kids continues to meet in the Sewing Room twice weekly to create the many needed items that will be distributed at Christmas. The woodworkers have been working on their creations, too. We are making puzzles and new items along with the trucks, cars, boxes and cradles that are currently out for painting.

Seniors for Kids will gratefully accept yarn and cloth donations for our charitable work. We have grown this summer and appreciate our new members, but we could use more help.

Stop by the Gift Shop and check out the toy items that are for sale. This income helps us purchase materials for the toys we distribute during the holiday months. Last month we were front and center in the featured artist window.

Our first business meeting is Thursday, October 5, 8 am, Catalina Vista. We look forward to seeing your smiles again.

September is here bringing fresh fall energy and ideas. Our Sewing Room will begin an uptick in activities as club members return. It is a great month to request training on our new machines or to become a monitor. You need to have your annual $5 member dues current to use the room or equipment, and there must be a monitor present. You can check at www.signup.com to ensure a monitor's presence before you come to the Sewing Room. Our groups have many folks who are willing to share ideas, techniques and enthusiasm. Come check us out.

If you have been wanting to look at what goes on in the Sewing Room, or have never been to our corner spot in the Artisan Center, now would be a great time to take a tour. We would love to show you our closet, filled with donations to the many organizations we support. What happens in our little corner room is pretty impressive. Come by Monday or Thursday, 9 am-noon, and take a look.

Wed., 1-3 pm, Artisan Center/Sewing

We are still embroidering faces, sewing bodies and stuffing bears with love as we fill the shelves for the next set to march out to new families. We have had a good number of smiling faces in the Sewing Room these summer months.

We are back to our normal schedule, putting all our love in the little bears we create and that children love. We do treat ourselves to an after-hours frozen yogurt party at the Peachwave once in a while on Wednesday.

As always, we are accepting donations of stuffing material. Be sure to mark the date on the calendar for the Arts and Crafts Festival, Saturday, November 11, Activity Center. Cheer Bears and Seniors for Kids will have a table selling the items we have made. Hope to see you soon.

The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets on Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. If you are interested in our group, stop by on Tuesday mornings between 9-11 am. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People involved in other arts using fiber are invited and encouraged to join our group.

Ilse Schmitt recently joined our group. The picture is her first project in progress. As you can see in the picture, she finished the middle and corners then worked on the outer sections. After finishing the middle section, she realized she did not have enough wool strips to finish the project. The closest color that the club had available are the light color wool strips that are in the picture. Ilse dyed the light-colored strips in hot “English Breakfast” tea (one bag) and one drop of food coloring. The dyed wool very closely matches the original color.

Summer shop hours: Mon.-Fri., 9 am-noon, Artisan Center/Lapidary Room

Several year-round members made the best of this unusually hot Arizona summer and regularly spent time in the air-conditioned silversmith and lapidary shops. Beautiful gems were cut and polished and many fine pieces of silver jewelry were created. Also, our purchasing agent, Mark Schmaedecke, reorganized our supply room, with help from longtime member, Ric Raynor. New equipment and supplies were ordered and placed in operating order. We look forward to welcoming back seasonal members, and know that they will enjoy our many improvements.

We welcome new members and enjoy training them to become proficient in silversmithing, stone cutting and polishing. Please stop by the shop for a tour, and sign up for a training session the second Tuesday of every month.

The SCOV Not So Silent Book Club is growing, and we hope you will join in the fun. No books are assigned. Once a month we each talk about a book we've been reading. It can be a military history, a tender love story, the latest best seller or a slim volume of a favorite poet. We go around the room asking if you love the book, the plot, the characters or a lyrical passage? If a movie adaptation was made, was it better or worse than the book? You may hear of a book you really would like to read. Sometimes we give away or loan books. Come celebrate your love of reading with us.

General meetings Oct.-May, Second Tue., 1-3 pm

Check calendar for location www.scvgs.org

Our summer meetings have been a great opportunity for us to gather together and help each other with our research. We’ve shared tips, helped each other deal with brick walls in our research, and enjoyed working together. Linda Stufflebean graciously led a mini-beginners class to help those who are just delving into genealogy develop good habits from the start.

For those who have returned from summer travels, reconnect with fellow researchers by joining us for our final summer meeting on Tuesday, September 12, 1 pm, WC3.

Everyone will have an opportunity to share a story from their research. It could be a summary of the detective work you did to find an answer to a family mystery, an interesting tale of someone in your family tree, or how one of your ancestors fits into history.

Poetry can be cinematic as well as graphically descriptive, a feat clearly accomplished in the following poem by club member Steve Lloyd:

“Breakwater cleaves oncoming waves. / Dark gaps between granite chunks await a misstep from bare feet.

Two girls in bikinis, / sunscreened legs gleaming, navigate boulders/with nervous laughter.

Lone fisherman monitors four poles / precariously set between rocks, / finds a sunfish on his hook.

In an hour this man-made spit / will be awash.

Only swirls and eddies / above sunken rocks / will disturb the surface, / reflect the sinking sun.

Finally / only waves / and stars.”

Newcomers are always welcome to join our weekly meetings on Zoom.

Most year-round members still bring their dogs early mornings or very late afternoons to avoid the heat of the day. Late afternoon dog park users often run into monsoon conditions. We might get rained on or need to rush to our vehicles to beat the inclement weather home. We appreciate it when we can enjoy a sunset, or even a rainbow at that hour. We agree it’s all good, and the spurts of action our dogs have gives them a change of pace.

Summer rains are upon us; the word monsoon refers to a system of winds that changes seasonally, bringing wet and dry periods to a region. In the Sonoran desert, the summer monsoon consists of winds from the sea flowing inland to fill the partial vacuum created by rising continental air warmed by the summer sun. These winds bring moisture. The belt of westerlies shifts north in the summertime, allowing moist air from Baja California to move into the region and bring monsoon rain. Enjoy this time of renewal and hope in the desert.

Our regular classes require no membership fees, no partners, no meeting, no patterns to memorize, just dance, dance, dance (and chat.) All dances are taught prior to dancing for low-stress fun. Dancing in community lifts our hearts and souls. It's also excellent for brain and cardiovascular health. New dancers are always welcome and encouraged. Join us as we dance our way around the world.

There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Participants should be able to do a basic swim stroke. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band. Most items are available at the pool. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help learn the various movements. We enjoy a great workout in a fun class.

This month, we still meet at 10 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, when the air temperature is 77 degrees or warmer, as recommended by the Arthritis Foundation. In October, our meeting time changes to 1 pm.

Our club performs gentle water exercises approved by the Arthritis Foundation to help with range of motion. Water exercise is especially helpful for arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Our members are fun, accepting and welcoming. We frequently hear “I came for the exercises and love all of the friends I have made.”

New members are always welcome. The yearly dues are

$5, and your first class is free. Your body will thank you. See you at the pool.

Energetic Exercise

Pres. Anne Palmer 520-289-9140 palmersaz03@gmail.com

Mon., Wed., Fri., 8-9 am, Activity Center/Auditorium

Energetic Exercisers meet in the cool, spacious Auditorium. A monthly calendar tells the focus for the day, such as aerobics, cardio tone or interval training. Equipment such as weighted bar, kettle bell or fitness circle adds variety and is always optional. Expert instructor Sally Martinez aims to help exercisers develop and maintain strength, balance and heart health. Everybody moves at their own pace and can always adjust to individual needs. Dress is exercise casual with sport shoes required. Membership in Energetic Exercise costs only $3/year, and then you purchase a 12-class punch card for $30. Newcomers can try out a first class for $2.50. If you want a cool, healthy indoor activity, come join us.

Fitness Swim

Contact: Dave Goodman 520-812-1056 goodman@sfu.ca

While most members are motivated recreational swimmers, we also include nationally-ranked master swimmers, triathletes, and former club and university swimmers. The group generally swims about 2,400 yards, though some do more and some do less.

New members are welcome. Please ensure you have medical clearance to participate in a vigorous workout. Swimmers are reminded to socialize quietly after a workout so as not to disrupt the next group of pool users.

Pilates

Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com

Mon., 3 pm, Thu., 1:30 pm, AFC/Studio

It's still summer and a great time to commit to a core strengthening exercise routine. Why not try Pilates? Classes are still small, making it a good time to learn. SCOV offers Joseph Pilates mat classes twice per week on Mondays and Thursdays. The benefits that come from performing specific strengthening and stretching exercises strengthen the body's core muscles (your abdomen and back). These exercises increase spine mobility and build flexibility. More benefits include better balance and muscle tone plus increased stamina. Our instructors will modify the exercises for you as necessary. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or just come by and watch.

Cycling renews us. Getting outside in the clean air, taking in the incredible mountain views and biking with friends are some of the reasons we choose to live here. Oro Valley is one of the greatest biking destinations in the country. Wide streets, gorgeous bike paths, clean air and desert beauty draw cyclists from all over the country.

Cycling here is a dream come true for members of the Sun City Vistoso Cycling Club (VCC). With over 250 members and organized group rides four days per week, there’s a ride for everyone.

We support three local charitable organizations: Wheels for Kids, El Grupo and the Interfaith Community Food Bank. VCC volunteers build or repair and deliver over 400 bikes to kids in the Tucson area every year through the Wheels for Kids (WFK) program. WFK’s 40 volunteers have delivered over 4,600 bikes to charities such as Boys and Girls Club, Casa de los Niños and More Than a Bed. New volunteers are welcome.

Birders Group

Peggy Smith 520-344-0991 pdsaz@aol.com

www.scovbirding.wix.com/birdersgroup

Planning meeting: Fri., Sep. 29, 4 pm, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

Common ravens are one of two species of ravens in Arizona and in the U.S. It is the raven most common in SCOV and is often confused with the smaller crow by folks from other parts of the country. Surprisingly, crows are almost non-existent in this part of Arizona, but can be found farther north in our state. Mostly a bird of the western U.S. and all of Canada, the common raven has a very unusual distribution, with a narrow finger pointing down the Appalachian Mountains.

We are a 110-plus member, activity-oriented group, and all SCOV residents are invited to join us on our field trips to learn more about the birds here in Arizona (we carpool). If you are interested in joining us, be sure to ask Peggy Smith to be added to our mailing list so we can keep you up-to-date on the trips.

It has been a real scorcher out there for a couple months, and residents are scarce, but the fun continues at the pickleball courts. Players of all levels have opportunities to play throughout the day. In fact, there is now plenty of open court time to try out the ball machine or work on skills and drills with a basket of balls. The schedule can be found on the club website. You must be a member of the Pickleball Club to participate in club activities. Zero Zero Two.
