Association News

From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors Ronna Heinig, scov.ronna.heinig@gmail.com HOAs Past, Present and Future by Ronna Heinig Historically, HOAs came into existence in the mid-19th century as a way for land developers to market and sell their homes. But the concept really took off in the 1960s and today more than 69 million Americans belong to an HOA, and that number is growing every day. Today one in four of us live in some sort of HOA. HOAs are governed by an elected Board of Directors. These individuals are your friends and neighbors. Each member of the Board of Directors must act in the best interest of the Association so as to meet current needs and assure the Association’s future viability. That is not always the easiest thing to do as we make many financial decisions that must be based on economics (what we need to do) and not politics (what we would like to do). Some associations have large cash reserves on hand to meet asset or capital needs as they arise. Others have lower fees and rely on special assessments, funds levied outside of HOA dues, for these types of expenditures. For example, when a major expense, such as replacing a roof arises and the HOAs reserves lack the funds to pay for it, the association may charge each homeowner a special assessment. These levies can run into thousands of dollars in addition to your dues. Here in SCOV, we have had excellent financial management which has resulted in over $26 million dollars in assets without the burden of debt. We have reserves for both asset replacement and capital improvements which allow us to pay cash for needed improvements, such as our remodeled Activity Center, instead of depending on special assessments, dues increases and/or the accumulation of debt. As our Association evolves and our wants and needs are met, we must continually resupply our reserves to assure financial stability for today and tomorrow. This is done through our budgeted dues payments, good financial management practices such as our Comcast and AT&T revenue streams, and also through our new home purchase Capital Contribution Fee, which is like a new home buyer purchasing a slice of our Association and all our amenities.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Monsoon Safety Now that we are in the middle of our monsoon season this is good information for everyone. Warm weather usually means fun in the sun, but summer heat also can bring severe weather. Threatening thunderstorms often loom large on summer afternoons so it’s important to be prepared for downpours and accompanying lightning, which can strike outdoors or indoors. Consider the following suggestions when planning both outdoor and indoor events this summer to reduce the risk of a lightning strike. • Watch the weather. Pay attention to your local weather forecast before participating in outdoor activities. If there’s a chance of thunderstorms, consider rescheduling or moving events indoors. If that’s not possible, have an emergency plan in place in case a severe storm rolls in and designate a sufficient nearby structure as an emergency shelter. • Stay inside. If severe thunderstorms are imminent, go indoors and wait until they pass. Safe, enclosed shelters include homes, schools, offices, shopping malls and vehicles with hard tops and closed windows. Open structures and spaces do not provide adequate protection. • Duck and crouch. If you’re caught outside during a severe storm, it’s important to crouch low on the ground, tuck your head and cover your ears to help protect yourself from harm. Do not lie down; lightning strikes can produce extremely strong electrical currents that run along the top of the ground, and laying horizontally increases electrocution risk. • Turn off faucets. During a thunderstorm, lightning can sometimes be conducted through the plumbing. Avoid any type of contact with running water, including bathing, showering, and washing your hands, dishes or clothes. • Turn off electronics. All electrical appliances–televisions, computers, laptops, gaming systems, stoves and more– that are plugged into an electrical outlet could carry a current from a lightning strike. Surge protectors will reduce the risk of damaging electronics. • Stay away from windows. Not only is lightning a threat, but high winds and hail create flying debris that could be harmful during a thunderstorm. Close all windows and doors and keep away from them.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 SCOV’s Gone VOIP Did that make any sense? Sun City Oro Valley has transitioned to a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phone system. That means our phones use the Internet to transmit calls rather than the old POTS lines (that’s Plain Old Telephone Service lines). As you may recall, during the demolition of the Activity Center entry, our telephone wires were also severed, creating a challenging time for phone line installers. Apparently our 35-year-old phone line system had lots of unique twists and turns as it was being installed. It was time to transition to the VOIP phone system. Lines are in, staff is learning the system and the bugs are being worked out. All the phone numbers are the same and listed in the Tipster, page 2, or at the top of the articles. Thank you for your support during this stressful time when reaching us by phone was a challenge. SCOV residents are the best.

or an old favorite. The online catalog system (Webopac) can help. From the SCOV website, click “Library” then “Online Catalog/Account.” From here you can use the drop-down menu under collections and choose DVD. Images will appear as well as their availability. Now that monsoon season is here, this is the perfect time to stay indoors during the hot afternoon heat and enjoy a movie. Thanks to the support of our community, we will continue to add over 15 large print books and approximately 30 new books/items to our collection each month. New titles are advertised in “This Week in SCOV” and are displayed in the front of the Library.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Do I Need Different Types of Exercise? Different types of exercise benefits your health in different ways: Aerobic activities like running, biking and swimming strengthen your heart and increase your endurance. Strength training like weight lifting or resistance training builds muscle and bone mass, improves balance and prevents falls. It’s one of the best counters to frailty in old age. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns with the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2. Tuesday, July 12, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Association Committees Active Health Chair Rita Menet 920-659-1428 rita.menet@gmail.com Next meeting Mon., Nov 14, 3 PM, WC1

Active Health presentations will resume in December. We already have a great lineup of speakers on a variety of health- and wellness-related topics. Until then, please join our community walking project, SCOV WALKS! Join other walkers any weekday, all year-round. Start walking promptly at 7 AM from Desert Oasis or Catalina Vista. Come with friends, or meet new ones. Walk at your own pace. Suggested routes are two miles, but you can turn around at any point. Download a copy of the suggested walking route by following this link: bit.ly/scovwalkmap.

Aquatic Fitness Center Advisory Cliff Miller 5cliff15@gmail.com First Wed., 11:15 AM, WC1

We encourage residents with ideas for the Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC) Committee to fill out an AFC agenda submission form. Email Cliff Miller to request the form. Complete and return the form ten days prior to the next meeting, and we will put you on the agenda.

Architectural Review Jim Cherry 612-805-5637 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

We have many new homeowners in SCOV as well as those who have been here for years. Home values have been climbing, and while the overall market certainly has played a role, our propensity for keeping our properties upto-date is also a factor. The below summary of 2021 Architectural Review Committee submittals tells the story, and 2022 is looking to be just as productive. Submittal Type Number Received House Painting 178 Walls, Fences, and Gates 137 Windows & Doors 91 Flatwork 46 Roof (Lift & Relay) 44 Landscaping 31 Shades, Screens, Shutters 29 Driveway Coatings 21 Patio Covers 18 Room Additions 17 Porch/Patio Enclosures 16 Awnings 12 Gutters/Downspouts 12 Spa/Pool 10 Various Others 77 Total ARC and In-House Submittals: 739 (61.6 per month) We may live in an older development, but you almost wouldn’t notice it as our community is keeping up with the times.

Artisan Center Renovation Task Force See SCOV calendar for meeting dates, time and location

The Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) meets the first and third Tuesdays of the month as needed. The SCOV website will have current agendas and minutes of meetings. An updated version of “A Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility Requirements for the Artisan Clubs of SCOV” is available on the SCOV website.

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, July 2022

Community Directory Chair Blythe Campbell 907-717-7546 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

Did you know our directory is also on the SCOV website? Find your neighbors’ names, or all the people from your hometown, or whatever you seek. The incremental search box will display results as you type. Are you included in the directory? New homeowners are unlisted by default. To add or update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “Change your directory listing.” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

Consumer Referral - Vendor List Susanna Moran scovconsumerservices@gmail.com

The Vendor List is on the SCOV website. After logging in, go to Members > Member Services > Consumer Referral Vendor List. The Vendor List also may be viewed at the monitor’s desk at Catalina Vista during business hours (during Activity Center renovation). Please check the Vendor List often, as changes are made frequently. Vendors should email Susanna Moran to inquire about applying to be on the Vendor List.

Finance-Budget Quarterly Zoom meetings on Mondays. Check SCOV calendar for dates and times.

The Finance-Budget Committee (FBC) meetings are typically held quarterly. The FBC meeting practice is to allow FBC members and up to 15 residents to attend in person. All others may attend via Zoom. The SCOV website provides the Zoom link. When necessary, the FBC will meet more frequently (e.g., budget preparation, audit results and when information is requested by the Board of Directors). Find meeting dates, times, location and other information on the SCOV website under Members > Committees > Finance-Budget. Current financial information is also available on the website under Members > Financials.

Food and Beverage Chair Bob Landis landisrc@gmail.com Next meeting Thu., Sep. 1, 2 PM, WC3

Welcome to our new restaurant manager, Janet Blackwell. The committee looks forward to working with Janet on both continuing and new events in the restaurant. The committee will next meet September 1. An agenda for the meeting will be posted in late August.

Friends of the Library Co-Pres. Kari Dufur karidufur@gmail.com Co-Pres. Carol Tombre mctombre@yahoo.com Treas. and Membership Andrea Houston ahoust2@lsu.edu

Meet our new co-presidents, Kari and Carol. Kari says, “Our Library is fantastic, but it doesn’t happen without the dedication and work of volunteers. I wanted to support this valuable amenity by serving on the board. I spent my Saturdays as a child in our local library getting lost in learning and imagination. I love crime mysteries. Listening to Great Reads has opened my eyes to many other genres.” Carol says, “No matter where I lived, the library has always been special to me. I have supported libraries by serving on many boards to ensure the library continues to be available to everyone. Having our own excellent SCOV Library was at the top of my list as to why we chose this community.”

7

Mystery and historical fiction are her favorite genres. Thank you to Kari and Carol for taking on these positions. Next month, meet our newest board members, Claire Wendt and Arlene Douglas. Andrea Houston will be maintaining the dual roles of treasurer and membership. Check Coming Events on page 10 for information about our exciting Book Bingo.

Featured artist this month is Lorraine Buck. Lorraine started painting many years ago and began focusing on the shapes and colors provided by nature and ancient forms. She was inspired by anLorraine Buck cient artists to paint animals based on the cave paintings of Southern France and Northern Spain. The animals etched and painted by ancient people seem to leap off the cave wall and are portrayed with incredible detail. After coming to SCOV, she was drawn to the Clay Club, and especially throwing clay on the wheel. She fires her clay to include horsehair, which is added to the pot when it is at 1,300° F. The hair burns into the clay and creates black squiggles as it burns. Saggar fired pots are created by coating the pots with various organic materials and salts and oxides. Because the pottery is low-fired and unglazed, it is not suitable for liquids.

Government Affairs Chair Earl Vittitoe earlvv@gmail.com Second Wed., 1 PM, WC1

The Government Affairs Committee’s role is to organize events and materials to facilitate communication and interaction between our residents and Oro Valley, Pima County, state and federal officials. This includes legislation, meetings with candidates, utilities and land use planning. The committee’s charter also includes health and safety as it relates to communication and information relating to government. We developed a COVID-19 presentation (focusing on zip code 85755) which is updated by a committee member every two weeks and posted on the committee web page suncityorovalley.com/committees/government-affairs/. As noted in the data presentation, Pima County currently has a low COVID-19 Community Level and the Disease Metrics, Healthcare System Availability and Public Health Tracing and Prevention all meet criteria to rate in the low Community Level. The second booster is available, and we will continue to update information to keep you informed about COVID-19.

Summer is here, and residents find it advantageous to park in the shade provided by the solar panels in the parking lots at the Mountain Vista complex. When parking under the panels, you might notice the electrical boxes on some of the vertical poles that support the panels. Those boxes contain the inverters that convert the DC power generated by the solar panels into AC power that is used in Association buildings, thereby saving the HOA money and reducing the community’s carbon footprint. The humming noise at the boxes indicates the equipment is operating normally. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. We are currently meeting via Zoom. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates and times.

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

July is the traditional beginning of the monsoon season in Southern Arizona. In regard to golf course maintenance, the start of the monsoons is bittersweet. The good news is the golf course will start to heal up quickly after the hot, dry temperatures in June due to the increased levels of humidity in the air. However, the monsoons also bring the chance of heavy rain that has the potential of causing serious damage to holes located near washes. Several years ago, a thunderstorm generated a large amount of water north of Sun City, but no rain actually fell on the community. The golf course was crowded with many golfers who were unaware of the water running down the washes. Several groups were playing holes number 4 and 5 when the wash began to fill. Two golf carts then tried to cross the wash and got stuck. Luckily, nobody was hurt, but it took a couple hours for the water to recede and to get the carts off the golf course safely. Please remember, when these washes are running, they are as powerful as raging rivers. Don’t drive around the course and attempt to cross these washes when the cart path is either covered with water or sand. At the minimum, the golf cart will be stranded until the staff is able to rescue the cart. Be aware that during monsoons, washes can flow even when it is not raining on the golf course. Distant rain will fill the washes because SCOV is at the bottom of a hill.

A need for sewn items for children at risk, a talented group of SCOV residents, sewing machines...what is missing? This is where your Foundation comes in by supplying the funds to purchase fabrics, thread, and elastic for these very devoted Casa Amigas sewers. These ladies spend hours making quilts, sleep pants, capri pants, sleep sacks and crib sheets for the most vulnerable children. These items are then distributed to three organizations: Amphi School Foundation (Starting Out Right), TOPS (Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services) and Sunrise House on the Tohono O’odham Reservation. We salute this caring group and are delighted to partner with them in this wonderful endeavor. If your club or organization needs funding for a project, please find the grant application on the Foundation website: www.foundationscov.org.

The Clay Club, in conjunction with the Art League, has recently redecorated Desert Oasis with new and inspiring art for all to enjoy. Please stop by and admire the offerings of clay art, a “quilt” made of gourds from the Gourd Carvers and many wonderful paintings and photographs from various groups of artists from our own community. There will also be a new exhibit this month in the restaurant niches. We are so lucky to have a space for art to flourish and to be able to feature our own residents in all these venues.

Well, we’re not by the sea, but we are happy that Clay Club member Ron Innes has reminded us of one of the ocean’s most fascinating creatures. His whimsical octopus (pictured) has drawn amazement and admiration from all who have witnessed its building and glazing. Ron says that the process of creating this fun, imaginative creature was a technical adventure for him. He wanted to see how difficult it would be. Ron’s background includes engineering know-how, and it shows. Summer days are less busy and more relaxed in the studios. What a great time to just chill in the Clay Studio’s airconditioning, while making that special project you’ve been trying to find the time to create.

We started out with a field trip to the Wuertz Gourd Farm near Casa Grande where we selected gourds for the quilt and other treasures for ourselves. We also took a quick side trip to the Greek restaurant in Florence which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The next week we had a day of cutting, cleaning, and preparing the quilt squares for decoraThe club’s gourd quilt tion. Each member took a couple quilt squares to decorate. The finished squares were assembled and hung from pieces of dried cholla. The resulting wall hangings are an amazingly beautiful reflection of the talent and diverse artistic flare of our members. You can view one of the quilts at Desert Oasis throughout this summer. The Gourd Club always welcomes new members and meets every Monday and Friday in the Artisan Center.

Japanese Flower Arranging Donald Marier 520-825-4878 dolmar21@gmail.com Nov.-May, Second and Fourth Mon., 2-4 PM, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge

Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come and join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopWe delivered 15 sleeping mats for the homeless in May ping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats. If you wish to donate bags, please flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway, or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one, no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Please do not drop off newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. odelers

Photo by Tom Prall This highly detailed model of a farm supply store was built by Hugh Madson, now an honorary member of the Modelers Club. The myriad of small details elevates this representation of a modest structure to a work of art: the colorful signs, the realistic weathering of the wooden siding, the individual wooden barrels, milk cans, and crates, and the pallet of grain sacks. Note how the fascia on the front of the loading dock has been damaged in the continued unloading of box cars. Would building a model like this interest you, but you need help getting started? The Sewing Room is quieter these days after the departure of seasonal residents. It’s a time to slow things down, even though we continue to work on our projects. Currently, we are sewing capri pant sets for girls, which include a colorful tank top. There are a few quilters working on child and baby quilts. It’s also time to clean out closets and cupboards and take stock of what’s on hand. Even though we are small in number, we’re mighty in spirit. Now would be a good time to join Thimblelenas and get oriented to the Sewing Room. Or, stop in any Monday or Thursday morning to discover what Casa Amigas is all about. Cheer Bears

It’s no secret that we change as we age, but it’s best to savor the good times and put the past in perspective. Poets Corner member Esther Berlot shares happy memories, regrets and a message of acceptance. This Temporary Life “Forgetting and remembering / the calendar of time / hiding old wounds / under a blanket of fear. Forgetting and remembering / best friends forever licking dreamsicles / Hearing whispered names of / crushes—now long gone. Forgetting and remembering / waning eyesight that now sees / past frivolous screwups / dating married boss. Forgetting and remembering / battles with anger now softened / Optimism reins in sadness / Bouts with grandiosity descend into reality. Forgetting and remembering / a life of lust swapped for a life of mind / though the battle to understand / unknowable computer leaves me in darkness. Forgetting and remembering / the last exit ramp that awaits me / as I blunder through this temporary life.” SCOV poets are welcome to join our weekly Zoom meetings.

Dues for 2022-2023 are $10/household, payable on our website. For your dues, your club offers product advice, help sessions, phone/tablet support, individual assistance and classes. No matter the depth of your bridge knowledge, you’ll enjoy Tuesday Night Bridge. Sure, we have some bridge sharks, but mostly they’re not dangerous to the average player. Like whale sharks, some partners have a big presence, win lots, bid and make occasional grand slams with their mug shots circulated. They’re not harmful at all. Some are even like nurse sharks, and they’ll help you if you ask about a challenging situation. Bring a partner and your dollars and immerse yourself. You’ll be glad you did. Arrive by 5:45 PM to secure your place in the water. Practice Bridge

Birders Group Peggy Smith 520-344-0991 pdsaz@aol.com www.scovbirding.wix.com/birdersgroup

Lesser nighthawks arrive here in May and stay much of the summer enjoying their favorite diet of flying insects. Extremely maneuverable, they can be seen in SCOV at dusk gliding gracefully and then suddenly darting for a Steve Holmes photo snack. They are a fairly large bird with pointed wings and a stripe near the end of the wingtips. Sometimes there will be a similar bird doing the same thing, but with more rounded wing tips and no stripe; that would be the Common Poorwill. Unlike the nighthawk they will attack the insects from the ground up. Our 90-plus member Birding Group has now entered the summer hiatus, with only ad hoc trips likely throughout the summer. Scheduled trips will resume in September, but if you wish to know about our spontaneous summer trips, be sure to get on our mailing list by contacting Peggy Smith above.

Left: Club members enjoying the music of Chuck Moses (right) Pickleball Club had their spring party on April 30, outside a member’s home. Not much in life is guaranteed, but in Arizona, it’s guaranteed that July will be a hot month. With a little luck, the temperature will be moderated by some cooling monsoon rains. Between those rainstorms, be sure to get out on the courts to play some Pop Tennis, share some laughs, and burn some calories. It’s a great way to start your day. Hope to see you out on the courts.

Warm weather is upon us, and we don’t want to miss out on the great fun and exercise of tennis. Note that our summer hours above (in the header) have been adjusted to accommodate the warm weather and to get us up and going earlier in the morning, when the sun starts shining. We’ve also added a club-organized mixed tennis group on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so there are even more options for everyone. We miss our seasonal tennis friends, but the courts are still in action with several hours of fun. Players have taken advantage of the tennis lessons provided this past winter and are applying what they’ve learned. Keep alert for SCOV tennis events in the Tipster and newsletters during the upcoming year. If you are interested in the great sport of tennis, grab your racket and head to the courts. Or, if you want to join one or more of the many Tennis Club organized playing groups, please contact Jim Benshoof. All are welcome at any skill level.

Attendance has increased for table tennis while room availability has decreased. Many other clubs are now using rooms that were originally designated for table tennis. As a result, our schedule for play fluctuates considerably, and it is recommended that players call Catalina Vista at 520-8258613 for room availability the day they want to play. Please note that Tuesdays, 1:30-3:30 PM, are reserved for women only.

Wallyball is volleyball played on a racquetball court with three to five players on a side. Players use the side walls to create angles, but the ball cannot hit the ceiling or the back wall of the opposing team. It is a terrific aerobic activity that tones muscles and improves coordination and balance and it’s great fun. Come visit to see if this game is for you. Both men and women are welcome, and tryouts are encouraged. We look forward to seeing you.

Recreational play is for anyone, regardless of their ability. Some advanced players play on recreational days, but the pace is more casual, so anyone can participate. Competitive play is for the more advanced players. The most important component for playing is laughter, laughing at each other or even ourselves, when we miss an easy shot. If you are curious, stop by, but bring your suit, because you may be compelled to join the fun.
