From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Board of Directors Terry McFadden, tmcfadden2020@comcast.net Solar Power Expansion by Terry McFadden As everyone knows, we have sizable solar power systems serving our community. The panels are on structures in the parking lots throughout the Mountain View complex and on the roofs of several of our buildings including Desert Oasis and Catalina Vista. They were originally installed by a company that would install solar systems free in exchange for our agreement to pay them 13.5 cents per kilowatt-hour (KWhr) for the generated power. This saved us considerable amounts each month on our electric bills for the buildings serviced by the project. This was the brain child of one of our residents, Dale Foster, who also has donated countless hours of his own time collecting the data to determine the system’s performance and just how much power was generated. From Dale’s analysis, it became apparent that it would be even more advantageous for us to buy the systems from the original installer so that SCOV would reap 100% of the benefit of the solar generation. We made the purchase last November and now save about $120,000 per year on our electric service, money that we originally had to pay to Tucson Electric Power (TEP). This has a direct effect on our annual dues, keeping them lower than they would be otherwise. Thank you, Dale. When the original systems were installed, solar service to the Aquatic & Fitness Center was not included, so the Properties Committee is now proposing a new solar project to provide power to that facility, saving a large percentage of its electric bill. Unlike the first project, the expense for this installation will be ours. In coming months, the Properties Committee will propose this project to the Long Range Planning Committee for a place on the budget where it will compete with other currently proposed projects. Whereas other projects being considered are all expenditures, this solar project is an investment which will immediately start paying us back in lowered electric bills from TEP. The project is still under analysis, but it is expected that the full return on our investment will be realized in 8 to 11 years.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Clarification of Duties In my visits with many residents of SCOV, I realize that the duties of the Board and those of the General Manager (GM) are often misunderstood or not understood at all. In this article I’d like to address both of these positions at the 10,000 foot level. The Board of Directors (according to the Master Declaration (MD) and Bylaws • Conducts all the affairs of the Association, unless a provision of the Governing Documents specifically requires the vote or consent of the Members. • Duty of enforcement of all provisions of the MD. • Right and responsibility for the proper management and operation of the Common Areas and improvements thereon. • Employ or terminate the services of a General Manager (GM) and supervise him/her in the performance of the GM’s duties. • Keep a complete record of acts and affairs (Board minutes). • Cause procurement of liability and casualty insurance on property owned by the Association, and errors and omissions insurance on behalf of officers and directors. • Cause facilities to be maintained and improved. • Direct the budget to be prepared. • Direct an annual audit report be prepared. General Manager Duties • Administer all affairs of the Association in accordance with its governing documents. • Develop operating policies and procedures for management of the Association. • Ensure the policies and other acts of the Board are carried out. • Assist the Board in formulating and evolving goals for the Association. • Provide resident services, personnel support and services. • Oversee all Association programs, projects, operations. • Negotiate all Association contracts subject to Board approval. • Develop annual operating budget for review by the FinanceBudget Committee and approval by the Board. Manage operations to coincide with the budget. Also 5 to 10 year budget plans. • Maintain an asset replacement plan. • Present accurate monthly financial reports to the FinanceBudget Committee and the Board. • Recommend annual fees and assessments. • Be well versed on Association governing documents, state statutes, local laws and proposed legislation that affects the Association. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 After-Hours Emergencies It’s 5 PM and water is running from an Association building…what do you do? There are times when the residents may spot something that needs to be brought to management’s attention immediately and the Administration Office is closed. What is the process? On page 2 of every Tipster, bottom right corner, the procedure is listed. It states, “If you encounter something in the common areas or golf course needing immediate attention (e.g., a broken irrigation head) and the Administration Office is closed, please report the issue to a building monitor. However, if the buildings are closed and no monitor is available, contact the After-Hours Emergency Line at 520-825-1161. A manager with access to vendors to address emergencies is always on duty. Please remember, this is for Association-related emergencies. If your concern is a personal emergency, call 911 or the appropriate vendor (plumber, etc.). If it’s not an emergency, please call back during business hours.
Community Services - Katy Mosier Architectural Coordinator, Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 ARC Submittals and Designated Representatives If you are going to file an Architectural Review Committee (ARC) submittal, one of the stipulations involved is that you, or a designated representative, must be available to meet onsite with an Architectural Review Committee member about a week or less before the ARC meeting where your project will be discussed. If you plan on leaving for the summer, or going on a vacation during that time period, please plan on naming a person who can make decisions regarding your project. That person must also be available to meet on site at your home to discuss the project with the ARC member. You must also fill out a Designated Representative form so that the ARC is aware that you are appointing this substitute to act as your spokesperson. In some cases a contractor is designated by a resident, but be sure you and the contractor are in total agreement about the project. Bottom line, it is best to submit a project when you will be available to meet with the ARC.

SCOV Library - Michelle Mooney www.suncityorovalley.com/amenities-facilities/library Online catalog: https://evolveopac.infovisionsoftware.com/suncityorovalley mmooney@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8083
When author Chris Enss visited SCOV in March, she spoke briefly about her new book, The Widowed Ones: Beyond the Battle of the Little Bighorn. This title will be released June 1, and we are looking forward to adding it to our collection. This new book is about the Seventh Cavalry officers’ wives who lost their spouses at the Battle of the Little Bighorn and survived the ordeal because of the friendships they had with one another. Using never-before-seen materials from the Elizabeth Custer Library and Museum, including letters to and from politicians, military leaders, fellow soldiers and critics of General George Armstrong Custer to the widows, along with letters between the widows themselves, this book talks about when the women first met, the men they married and their attempts to persevere after the tragedy. I want to recognize the amazing commitment of time, energy and donations the Library receives from its 42-plus volunteers. Not only do they run the circulation desk and help patrons find great books, but they continuously help me in the background with book processing, new projects and Library improvement ideas. They are an awesome team. Thank you.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Health Benefits of Laughter One of the benefits of laughter is that it can help you tone your abs. When you are laughing, the muscles in your stomach expand and contract, similar to when you intentionally exercise your abs. Meanwhile, the muscles that you are not using to laugh are getting an opportunity to relax. Add laughter to your ab routine and make getting a toned tummy more enjoyable. Laughter is also a great cardio workout, especially for those who are incapable of doing other physical activities due to injuries or illness. It gets your heart pumping and burns similar amounts of calories per hour as walking at a slow, moderate pace. So, laugh your heart into health. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns with the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2. Tuesday, June 14, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, June 15, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Tuesday, June 28, the AFC spa will be closed for cleaning until 1 PM.

Since joining SCOV in December 2019, and going through a whole house/yard renovation, it didn’t take long to become familiar with the Development Standards. I have learned as a member of the ARC that we are homeowner volunteers tasked to advocate the improvement efforts of our neighbors. These Standards are the community’s effort to promote a level of continuity within SCOV. Over the years, there have been updates reflecting the changing tastes of the community as a whole. The new Southwest door colors are a recent example. For some, there is still a wish for a broader opportunity to express one’s artistic nature. Fortunately, we have that opportunity to express ourselves within the interior of our homes. The exterior is set to reflect a broader expression of the community. That said, community tastes change, and we should stay connected in a positive manner, making sure we adapt our Standards to best fit our community desires for a Southwest desert architecture.
Artisan Center Renovation Task Force See SCOV calendar for meeting dates, time and location
The Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) meets the first and third Tuesdays of the month as needed. The SCOV website will have current meeting notices. The current ACRTF practice is for committee members and up to 15 guests to attend in person. All others may attend via Zoom. An updated version of “A Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility Requirements for the Artisan Clubs of SCOV” is available on the SCOV website. Go to Members > Committees > ACRTF to see the Charter and other information for the task force.

Log in at www.scovaz.com/members/services/miscellaneous/ and click on SCOV Photo Contest Form. Is your directory listing correct? Maybe you replaced your landline with a cell phone. Check both the online directory and the paper directory. Is your deceased partner still listed? A lot of people like to keep their loved one’s name in the directory, for safety or for sentiment, so deceased spouses are removed only when the surviving spouse requests it. If you’ve decided it’s time to update your listing, just let me know. To update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “Change your directory listing.” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center. A word of thanks to outgoing chair, Lisa Collins, who has been diligent about keeping the directory up-to-date and ensuring that our print directories are completed each year. The Finance-Budget Committee (FBC) meetings are typically held quarterly. The FBC meeting practice is to allow FBC members and up to 15 residents to attend in person. All others may attend via Zoom. The SCOV website provides the Zoom link. When necessary, the FBC will meet more frequently (e.g., budget preparation, audit results and when information is requested by the Board of Directors). Find meeting dates, times, location and other information on the SCOV website under Members > Committees > Finance-Budget. Current financial information is also available on the website under Members > Financials.

Garry Buck’s Great Views in April was an Oscar-winning success. He reviewed 21 foreign and indie films for Friends of the Library (FOL) members. All his reviewed films can be found in your SCOV Library. Thank you Garry. Pick up your FOL application in the Library. We are sad to say FOL president Lynne Davis will be stepping down from a position she has held off and on since joining in 2016. Her wonderful leadership, gentle humor and caring about our Library has brought membership to a record total of almost 800 members. A huge thank you to Lynne. FOL has such a devoted membership of readers that we are inviting all avid readers to write reviews of their favorite books published between November 2021 and September 2022. The November Great Reads will be filled with suggestions from you and presented by FOL board members. Call Andrea Houston 520-825-6919 or Sherry Small 412-9151667 for review parameters and details. Featured artists for June are Elise Collin and Jen Garvin. Elise has enjoyed art all her life. In college she learned to use the potter’s wheel and mix glazes and graduated with Jen Garvin (left) and Elise Collin a degree in interior design. Today she enjoys making functional pottery such as platters, bowls, kitchen tools, etc. She is most inspired by Japanese designs and shapes. Jen has loved gardening her entire adult life. She creates living vignettes using potted plants, sculpture and secret surprises in the garden. Although she does create functional pottery, she has the most fun creating garden totems, planters, sculpture, bird houses and garden art. Make sure to visit the Gift Shop to see the work of these artists and enjoy the coolness of the shop on a hot summer day.

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063
June is a very slow time for many of the activities around the community with the very hot temperatures. However, the summer months mark the busy season for golf course maintenance. During the winter months there aren’t many opportunities to aerate greens, aerate and verticut fairways, or do any major projects without interrupting tournaments or impacting play during the peak golfing season. The heat of the summer has a negative impact on people, but the Bermuda grass thrives in the high heat. The heat increases soil temperatures which then provides the best time to aerate greens, tees and fairways, because they are able to recover quickly without disturbing as many rounds of golf. Aeration is necessary to provide oxygen, water and nutrients to the roots, remove thatch, and relieve compaction developed over a season of heavy golf and cart traffic. This process provides a healthier and more playable turf in the long run. This summer, the major priority is continuing to establish a good Bermuda grass base. The process started by not overseeding the previous winter and will continue until we overseed again in September. The fairways will continue improving without going through a transition that normally occurs in June. The aeration and topdressing are going to be repeated on greens, tees and fairways at least twice before the next overseeding. With the increased ability to prevent weeds in the fairways and perform all the necessary cultural practices this year, without dealing with the whole transition, we will realize vastly improved playing conditions throughout the summer.

The Clay Club has added many new members this spring and technique classes are much in demand. On April 25, Mary Murck presented a “Basic Platter” class to 10 beginning handbuilders. Mary said, “Making Debbie Reed (left) receiving instruction from a platter with a Education Team member Maria Welch. mold is a simple thing. We learned to roll a slab and shape the dish with the right tools. The students worked hard and the Education Team helpers (Marti Friday, Barb Peterson and Maria Welch) were excellent in guiding students to successfully complete their projects.” In addition to offering classes on hand-building, helpful information on glazing combinations and techniques is available in the Glaze Studio windows. If you are looking for a new look for your pottery piece, you may just find a sample of a glaze you love. Check out all the windows in both studios for ideas and inspiration.

Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

Just some of the beautiful colored pencils we use If you appreciate fine detail in art, our club may be just the group for you. We have colored pencil and scratchboard artists who will be happy to get you started. Basic drawing skills are helpful, but not essential. We hope you will join us.
If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come and join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats. If you wish to donate bags, please flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway, or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one, no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Please do not drop off newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. Thank you for helping us do good.

If you would like to see some of our work, we have sculptures in the display cases in Catalina Vista and the SCOV Library. The sculpture of a man on a trapeze was created by John Johnston. This sculpture is an illustration of blending various materials to create a sculpture. Currently, there are several club members experimenting with using alternative materials. Aleda Haug has been experimenting with Paverpol, which is a fabric hardener. Using this technique, one can either apply the treated material to a flat base to create a relief sculpture, or it can be applied to an armature to create a three-dimensional sculpture.

Currently, we are sewing capri pants for girls, which include a colorful tank top. There are a few quilters working on child and baby quilts. It’s also time to clean out closets and cupboards and take stock of what’s on hand. Even though we are small in number, we’re mighty in spirit. Now would be a good time to join Thimblelenas and get oriented to the Sewing Room. Or, stop in any Monday or Thursday morning to discover what Casa Amigas is all about. Cheer Bears
Pat Norton 480-993-8762 panpan9803@yahoo.com Wed., 1-3 PM, Artisan Center/Sewing
Cheer Bears have been busy this winter and we have filled our shelves. We really enjoy spending time together and are now distributing bears to their new homes. We will continue to meet every Wednesday from 1 - 3 PM in the Sewing Room. We look forward to seeing your smiling faces. We have put some of our Cheer Bears in the Gift Shop to be sold, with all proceeds going to replenish our supplies and keeping the little bears marching. Stop by the Gift Shop, browse and maybe purchase a smiling face for that grandchild you want to thrill. Machine Embroidery

Even though the Machine Embroidery Club is taking a hiatus during the summer months, it doesn’t mean the machines aren’t humming. Summer is the best time to get a head start on those Christmas gifts you are planning to make. Many of our members have machines at home, but we also have a wonderful 6-needle embroidery machine in the Sewing Room. If you are a Thimblelenas member, you can get lessons on how to use it. Just give Karin Frohlich a call. Be sure to check out our Facebook page to see the projects our members have been making. Enjoy the summer, and see you all in the fall. In the meantime, keep on sewing and embroidering. Pet Beds
Jan Bohe 520-825-9725 Tue., 1-3 PM, Artisan Center/Sewing
Conversation flows easily, as we snip washable fabric for stuffing pillows. Then we add polyester fiberfill. After a few machine stitches, the pet beds are ready for the Humane Society. Comfort is the name of the game for these cats and

During the months of June, July and August, Carol Guibert has reserved Desert Oasis/Ocotillo Room the second and fourth Tuesdays, from 1-3 PM, for club members. There will be no planned agenda, but you may bring projects to work on and enjoy getting together with friends. Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts

The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. If you are interested in our group, stop by on Tuesday mornings between 9-11 AM. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People in-volved in other arts using fiber are invited to join our group. In April, Carrie Wiley hosted a hands-on workshop at her home to demonstrate and teach other group members techniques for dyeing wool to be used for rug hooking projects. The picture shows the various pieces of wool that members created during the dyeing demonstration. Carrie focused on three techniques: basic, spot and dip-dyeing. Each participant had the chance to experiment with each of the techniques. Carrie uses acid dyes from Cushings. The group members thank Carrie for sharing her home, supplies and knowledge. This gave others the chance to get comfortable with the dyeing process, so they can create their own array of colors to use in their projects.

Silversmith and Lapidary Pres. Rich Rozehnal 520-638-6368 rozehnal@comcast.net Shop hours: Mon.-Fri., 9 AM-Noon, 1-4 PM, when monitors available
It does not take long for a silversmith to accumulate a lot of scrap sterling silver. Many of our members find a use for these expensive scraps using the lost wax casting technique. It begins with making or buying a wax pattern of a ring, a bracelet charm, an object from nature such as a prickly pear matrix, inMembers, Mark, Bob and Ed waiting for a vesting it in a flask with fresh casting to cool down plaster, heating it in an oven to melt out the wax and replacing it with molten sterling silver (your scraps) in our centrifical casting machine. Come by and see our many pieces of jewelry in our display windows, some made with the lost wax technique. SCOV residents interested in joining are encouraged to visit the shop and speak to the monitor about scheduling training.
Stained/Fused Glass Daniel Stasi 815-762-3636 scovglassclub@gmail.com Studio Manager Ellen Jordano 763-807-0184 elleninplymouth@gmail.com Open to members 8 AM-9 PM www.scovglassclub.weebly.com In 2012, Anne became a member of our glass club. What happened after that was astounding! She attended the required beginner’s class, and shortly after, she and her husband, Jerry, decided to begin making a stained glass window. We call that bravery. They navigated through modifying a Sonoran Desert design, and went to work. In seven months, a gorgeous 2x5-foot window was created. Anne remains fascinated by the fact that you can take a flat piece of glass and turn it into a masterpiece. She has, indeed, created Anne Solomon with her beautiful many masterpieces throughout stained glass iris bouquet. the years, but by far, Anne is well known in studio as our iris aficionado, creating glass flowers that stay fresh all year. She has taught our iris class to many experienced members. Anne is also a studio monitor. We sincerely thank all of our volunteer monitors and teachers. Please come visit our studio. We promote ingenuity. Pertinent information above.

Summertime is definitely the slow season at the Wood Shop. Many of our Woodworking Club members have left for cooler summer climes, so the hum of activity becomes muted. The Wood Shop will remain open throughout the summer but may be closed occasionally as demand slackens and monitors are not available. This month’s featured woodworker is Ken Rosburg. A retired USAF fighter pilot and commercial airline pilot, Ken is an active fouryear SCOV resident. The Wood Shop has become his haven for creating beautiful pieces of functional art. Ken says the Wood Shop is like walking into a candy store and has become one of our senior monitors. A new member orientation is held the first Wednesday of each month at 4 PM. Call Bill Norton at 480-980-5493 for further instructions. For questions or more information, please visit the website or call an officer.

Poetry has always been a vehicle for expressing an entire spectrum of feelings, from love to hate, despair to elation, discord to harmony and everything in between. Even before the present invasion of Ukraine, the daily photos of death and destruction, occasional glimpses of valor and fortunate escapes, we all are witnessing the price we pay for divisiveness, the ailing of democracy that once was proud and hale. Poets Corner member James Pavlakis has packed a serious message into this seemingly simple poem about a flower that also contains a great big dose of hope: A Flower is Born It takes a while To bond, for seed and soil each getting to get along. what it needs to make To warm up from two have some drinks a new one get comfortable.

This year Fido’s Friends membership grew a lot. A good season was enjoyed with many more people attending Fido’s Friends meetings, connecting on social media, enjoying Yappy Hour and having their dogs use the park. Some improvements were really appreciated by many members, Follow the leader. Mary Murck photo including taking advantage of the new option of having two separate areas for the dogs. Club members are working on maximizing the parking area to make it simpler and safer to park. Once all parts of the dog park improvement project are complete, we’ll have a good, safe area for the dogs to socialize, run, romp and play. One of the final pieces the club is tackling is obtaining shade structures. Fewer dogs are here in the summer and it’s quieter in the heat, but some of the dogs still enjoy the socializing and being out and about, and so do their people. Have a great summer everyone.

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio
Summer is here and both the Monday and Thursday classes are smaller and more personal, making it a great time to try out Pilates. First, we do stretching exercises to warm up and then perform the Pilates mat routine, modifying some of the moves for those with limitations. People ask, “Can the benefits of Pilates, which come from strengthening and stretching exercises, really develop the body’s core (your abdomen and back muscles), make you stronger overall, increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is a firm yes. Additional benefits include improved balance, muscle tone, stamina and a feeling of well-being. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or just stop by and watch. Call Mary.

No matter the depth of your bridge knowledge, you’ll enjoy Tuesday Night Bridge. Sure, we have some bridge sharks, but mostly they’re not dangerous to the average player. Like whale sharks, some partners have a big presence, win lots, bid and make occasional grand slams with their mug shots circulated. They’re not harmful at all. Some are even like nurse sharks, and they’ll help you if you ask about a challenging situation. Bring a partner and your dollars and immerse yourself. You’ll be glad you did. The delicate Say’s Phoebe is often found on rooftops here in SCOV, where it can easily spy insects in the air and on the ground. Its plaintive call is usually a single note in a minor key that slurs downward. It is easily identified by its rufus flank and its habit of leaving a perch to grab an insect and returning to the same perch. All flycatchers do that, and there are more Steve Holmes photo than fifteen species of flycatchers in Arizona alone. Several of them can be found here in SCOV. Our 90-plus member Birding Group has now entered the summer hiatus, with only ad hoc trips likely throughout the summer. Scheduled trips will resume in September, but if you wish to know about our spontaneous summer trips, be sure to get on our mailing list by contacting Peggy Smith.

Warm weather is upon us, and we don’t want to miss out on the great fun and exercise of tennis. Note that our summer hours above Smiling faces of SCOV tennis players attending the (in the header) player appreciation and recognition event have been adjusted to accommodate the warm weather and to get us up and going earlier in the morning, when the sun starts shining. We’ve also added a club-organized mixed tennis group on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so there are even more options for everyone. We miss our seasonal tennis friends, but the courts are still in action with several hours of fun. Players have taken advantage of the tennis lessons provided this past winter and are applying what they’ve learned. Keep alert for SCOV tennis events in the Tipster and newsletters during the upcoming year. If you are interested in the great sport of tennis, grab your racket and head to the courts. Or, if you want to join one or more of the many Tennis Club organized playing groups, please contact Jim Benshoof. All are welcome at any skill level.

It is a terrific aerobic activity that tones muscles and improves coordination and balance. Come join to see if this game is for you. Both men and women are welcome, and tryouts are encouraged. We play on Tuesdays and Fridays from 1-3 PM. It’s great fun and we look forward to seeing you there.

Recreational play is for anyone, regardless of their ability. Some advanced players play on recreational days, but the pace is more casual, so anyone can participate. Competitive play is for the more advanced players. The most important component for playing is laughter, laughing at each other or even ourselves, when we miss an easy shot. If you are curious, stop by, but bring your suit, because you may be compelled to join the fun.
