by Chris Ludwig On March 21, 2020, then SCOV BOD President John Wilson conducted the first Board meeting via Zoom, facilitated by our incredible administrative staff, who subsequently assisted other committees and clubs in setting up their own Zoom meetings. Over the past two years, I have participated in close to 100 Board, committee, and club Zoom meetings. While there were numerous technical problems to be worked out, there was also a learning curve for participants as all of us had to master Zoom etiquette. Hundreds of residents have tuned in to watch, listen, and participate in their pj’s with coffee cup in hand, and guess what? Everyone can see you. Oh, the things we have seen and heard over these past two years: Amazon delivery person arriving at the door, the cleaning lady vacuuming, barking/ whining dogs, hollering spouses, leaf blowers outside, contractors working inside, sweet spouses bringing coffee and a smile to list a few. The most memorable for me was when SCOV BOD President Joy Huxtable was out of state and conducted our three-hour Board meeting sitting in her car outside Wendy’s (her only WiFi connection). With her computer battery running low, Joy’s always prepared husband was there with a backup battery.

While Zoom technology has allowed us to engage many more residents in meetings than was ever the case in person, you need to be aware that if you can see yourself in a Zoom box, so can everyone else. And, they can see your first and last name. So, carrying on a conversation, flossing your teeth, taking a nap, communicating with your pet and using four-letter words should be avoided. If your camera is sitting on your lap, the view to the other participants is up your nose.

The way to avoid these potentially embarrassing moments is to use the mute button on your Zoom screen. There is one that mutes the audio and another that controls the video. You can still see and hear everything that’s going on during the meeting, but the other participants cannot see or hear you.

This will ease the distraction to all involved.

SCOV elections went well thanks to the efforts of the Nominating Committee, Election Committee and staff with Robin Coulter in the lead. Well done, all of you.

The Activity Center Renovation continues with demolition completed and steel studs being erected. The team of six residents and three staff meet weekly with the contractor’s team and every other week with the architects. So far, we are told, we are on time and under budget.

The Board of Directors for 2022-2023 elected officers the first week of April. They are: President, Ronna Heinig; Vice President, Mike LaBarbera; Secretary, Elaine Deeter and Treasurer, Rocky Gedrose. Congratulations to all and thank you for being willing to serve in these positions.

At a time when words of hate and animosity seem to prevail around the world, my thanks goes out to those of you who provide kind words and support to myself, staff and other residents in our community. You are truly what makes Sun City Oro Valley great.

A reminder: if you have a concern about a staff member please contact me instead of the staff member. I will work to resolve the issue.

The restaurant continues to generate record revenues and serve record numbers of meals. Our gratitude goes out to our residents for supporting the restaurant.

Staying Safe in SCOV

ecently the website, ElitePersonalFinance, published a list of the 30 Safest Places in Arizona 20221. Extracted from the latest data from the FBI crime statistics in the United States, Oro Valley ranked number one as the safest place to live in Arizona.

Violent crime was used as the main criteria.

According to the Oro Valley Police Department’s crime statistics, larcenytheft has the highest incidence of the reported crimes in Oro Valley. Be sure that you are not a victim. One of the easiest things you can do is keep your doors locked and garage door closed.

The SCOV Posse has resumed nightly patrols following a two-year Covid-19 hiatus. These patrols help to deter potential thieves, but they are not a substitute for exercising caution on your part.

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office has a website full of resources that seniors may find useful: Care facilities and hiring a caregiver, legal information and services, businesses and their licensing–such as contractors, and programs and services for seniors. You may want to bookmark this page www.azag.gov/seniors/.

The Attorney General’s website also has scam alerts.

Consider signing up for monthly scam alerts sent to your email. These alerts contain important information on topics specific to seniors such as gift card purchases, computer tech support, home repair fraud and phishing.

There is also a helpful section for life care planning.

The frequently asked questions (FAQ) may be very helpful as you begin to prepare a Living Will and Durable Health Care Power of Attorney.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau2 provides some helpful tips to protect yourself from scams: • Don’t share numbers or passwords for accounts, credit cards, or Social Security.

• Never pay up front for a promised prize. It’s a scam if you are told that you must pay fees or taxes to receive a prize or other financial windfall.

• After hearing a sales pitch, take time to compare prices.

Ask for information in writing and read it carefully.

• Too good to be true? Ask yourself why someone is trying so hard to give you a “great deal.” If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

• Watch out for deals that are “good today only,” and that pressure you to act quickly. Walk away from high-pressure sales tactics that don’t allow you time to read a contract or get legal advice before signing. Also, don’t fall for the sales pitch that says you need to pay immediately, for example, by wiring the money or sending it by courier.

• Put your number on the National Do Not Call Registry.

Congratulations, Kris Ahlstrand, Distinguished Service Award Recipient

he Board of Directors’ Distinguished Service Award is givT en to the member-volunteer who has made an exemplary contribution to the quality of life in SCOV. Over the past two years, many volunteers have kept things running as we all have been confronted with unprecedented challenges. However, one person stands out, Kris Ahlstrand, cochair of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). If you haven’t gotten ARC approval for a project since Covid, you may not be aware that pandemic restrictions necessitated the transition from a paper to an electronic application and review process. Kris was instrumental in this transition.

Looking back, Kris and her husband, David Murphy, moved to SCOV in 2008, and Kris joined the ARC in 2018, starting her four-year involvement. Having a background in the garment industry and home remodeling, this was a natural fit.

After serving 18 months as a committee member, ARC business-as-usual was suspended by Covid restrictions. No more stopping in to talk with Katy, no more site visits to review applications, and no more meetings to discuss compliance, modifications, and approvals. Residents and contractors were in high anxiety mode regarding their submittals.

How are we going to handle new applications? The first step was to ask Kris to be co-chair of ARC, and she got to work immediately.

Needless to say, the learning curve was steep, there were a number of false starts, and a supreme effort was needed from staff, committee members and applicants. What had been a paper-based submittal process has morphed into an entirely electronic process. How It’s Made – Committee Version I find shows about how something is made fascinating. My granddaughter and I watched a show about how rainbow sprinkles were made. Who knew so much effort and so many steps went into those colorful confections that dot scoops of ice cream? That had me thinking about the way committees are made in SCOV. You may not know how many steps go into establishing this amazing volunteer tool for SCOV, so, let’s find out how committees are made.

The vote for directors is determined at the end of March.

During early April the new Board meets to select its leadership, including the Board president. The new Board president is responsible for recommending committee chairs for the standing and advisory committees plus populating the entire Nominating and Election Committees. The General Manager is responsible for the Service and Support Committees. (Note: Ad Hoc and Task Force are short-term committees and are established as needed, so they are populated individually.)

Once the committee chairs have been selected by the Board president, they will start interviewing applicants from an earlier call to the community for committee members. All

dence, and Zoom review meetings. Through it all, Kris was the catalyst, motivator, leader and tireless worker. As SCOV residents retreated to their social bubbles, they planned remodeling projects. During one eight-month period of her co-chair tenure, ARC approved 381 submittals. This not only allowed resident projects to move forward, but it also helped keep our valuable contractors in business.

Not to be overlooked is Kris’ dedication to assisting homeowners and resolving neighbor disagreements. In 2019, SCOV members voted to ensure that homeowner views would not be significantly compromised by home expansions. This was followed by Board Policy ARC-006, Home Expansions and Patio Covers. Kris worked to develop procedures implementing these new ARC review responsibilities. Going David Murphy photo forward, ARC will meet with homeowners prior to their submitting an application so that potential points of non-compliance can be identified and modified before money is spent on professional services.

Kris has spent many hours meeting with applicants and neighboring residents to resolve issues concerning a proposed expansion. Lastly, she also oversaw two revisions of the Development Standards (including the new Talavera front door colors), so that they would reflect the ever-changing remodeling desires of homeowners.

Kris will be leaving her position as ARC co-chair this month but will continue to serve on the board of the Gift Shop. She looks forward to designing pillows and runners using fabrics from around the world and guiding SCOV homeowners with their remodels. She is committed to working on new home colors and hopes to continue advising on the renovation of the Artisan Center. completed applications are submitted to the committee chair who then interviews the applicants and makes recommends to fill vacant positions. At the same time, the current committee membership is reviewed to identify those who have remaining time in their three-year term. Sometimes those who have served for three years are recommended for an extension of their membership, which is approved by either the Board or the General Manager, based on the type of committee. At a May Board meeting the committee chairs and membership are approved by the Board. The committee work year begins June 1. And that’s how SCOV committees are made.

Whether you have gone or are intending to go away for any extended time, please make arrangements with a landscaping service to arrange for monthly service to monitor overgrowth, weeds, spent wildflowers, dead plantings, etc.

It is the owners’ responsibility to maintain their yards whether here or elsewhere. Please do not rely on a neighbor or a Courtesy Notice from the Association to let you know if things look really bad. If we get a heavy monsoon, weeds will be prolific, and plantings will grow exponentially. Be proactive and schedule regular maintenance while you are gone so that those who remain here during the hotter weather can enjoy our beautiful neighborhood looking as it should.

I attended the Tucson Festival of Books for the first time. It was an amazing experience.

Former Sun City librarian, Kate Cusumano, reviewed several new books that were presented at the festival. You can locate these books in our Library by typing in “Tucson Festival of Books 2022” in the search bar of our Webopac system.

The last book on Kate’s list will be released on May 3 and added to our collection. If you are interested in previous festival books available in our Library, these can be searched using the same procedure and simply changing the date.

The Library is adding a new historical fiction series, After Dunkirk, by author Lee Jackson. From the beaches of Dunkirk to the codebreakers of Bletchley Park, the After Dunkirk series is a panoramic tale of war, love, courage, sacrifice and betrayal. A family scattered across Europe, doing their duty for king and country while war rages. Books 1-3 will be available in early May. Book 4 will be released in June. Stop by the Library and check out this new series.

Use enough sunscreen to generously coat all skin that will be not be covered by clothing. Ask yourself, “Will my face, ears, arms or hands be covered by clothing?” If not, apply sunscreen. Most people only apply 25-50 percent of the recommended amount of sunscreen. Follow the guideline of “one ounce, enough to fill a shot glass,” which dermatologists consider the amount needed to cover the exposed areas of the body. Adjust the amount of sunscreen applied depending on your body size. Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes before going outdoors. Skin cancer also can form on the lips. To protect your lips, apply a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Mountain views obstructed by trees continue to be a major concern with the homeowners in our community. The objective is not to get rid of trees and bushes, it is to be aware of the views they might block. The Development Standards has a list of prohibited plant species and also a new list of approved trees that hopefully will be used if you are considering a new plant. As you are all aware, water is a valued commodity in our world today, so please consider this when planting. We moved to the desert because of its beauty, so why not plant drought-tolerant cacti and succulents?

For submittals pertaining to home expansions and patio covers, Board Policy 006-002 has been revised for clarity and to simplify preparing an application. The privacy walls

Acceptable colors have also been added to slatted patio covers, and window colors have expanded to include black, the new bronze and cream. Don is known for his food-safe wooden bowls and platters that feature intricate designs created with different colors and varieties of wood. When you feel one of

these bowls, you get an appreciation for the quality of his work and his meticulous attention to detail. Don also makes beautiful and durable wooden bracelets, hoop earrings, charcuterie boards and urns.

Elaine Woods is a gourd sculptor. After carving the gourd, she dyes the outside, drills holes around the gourd, then prepares pine needles, softening them to a certain pliability to be able to work with them.

Elaine also makes silver pendants from the prickly inside of the cleaned gourd, using the lost wax casting method.

They look very detailed, lacy and delicate.

Please come in and enjoy the work of all our wonderful resident artists in a cool space on a hot day.

The Properties Committee conducts a number of facility and Chalk Creek Wash inspections throughout the year.

During the inspections, participants make notes and take photos of their observations relating to safety, functional or appearance issues. Those notes and photos are assimilated into a draft report that is reviewed and edited by all committee members. The final report is then forwarded to Association management for resolution by staff. The committee is pleased to report that most recent observations have been appearance issues. The number of safety and functional issues have decreased during the past several years. We had another busy and successful season this year. Our new rates and membership information for the 2022-2023 season will be available on the website the first week of May, www. theviewsgolfclub.com.

Please be aware of some important dates coming up regarding the maintenance of the golf course. At the end of April, we aerated tees and will be continuing throughout the summer, as needed. A pre-emergent herbicide was applied to tees, fairways and roughs to prevent the goosegrass from growing during summer and fall.

During the first week of May, aeration of the roughs continues with no closure necessary. On May 12, the practice green will be aerated starting at 9 AM and will be closed until the project is complete.

The greens aeration begins May 16 with the back nine being closed for the day, but allowing play on the front nine. On the following day, May 17, the front nine will be aerated and the back nine will be open. Please indicate when booking starting times, whether you will play nine holes only, or play the same nine twice.

Starting on May 31, the fairways will be top-dressed and solid-tine aeration begins on the back nine, which will be closed through June 2. The following week, June 6-8, the front nine will be closed for aeration.

This May will be both the same and different than previous years in regard to golf course maintenance. This year is different without the process of transitioning winter ryegrass out of the Bermuda grass since we didn’t overseed.

This was one of the big reasons the fairways weren’t overseeded, because it will allow the Bermuda grass a full growing season to establish a better root system without the competition from another grass growing on top of it.

However, the maintenance of the fairways, tees and greens

will be the same as every summer. In May, the greens will be aerated and topdressed to reduce compaction and encourage new root growth. The fairways are going to be aerated and heavily topdressed in June. Even though the fairways were not overseeded, the Bermuda grass still needs the addition of sand to improve soil conditions while reducing organic content. The combination of no transition this year and performing our normal maintenance practices will result in very thick roughs and fairways.

The thickness of the fairways and roughs eventually leads to problems. The grass grows faster than it can be mowed, which results in lots of clippings and eventually scalped areas. The scalped areas turn brown, and the excess clippings lead to messy conditions that impact playability. In response, the fairways will be verticut multiple times to thin the turf canopy, and mowing heights will be raised.

By not overseeding this year, the fairways will be extremely healthy leading to problems most golf courses wish they had, having too much grass.

At 7:45 AM, most of us have not even gotten our eyes open yet. But, there is a group of Sunrisers Exercise Club members who cannot wait to get moving.

With their regular classes canceled due to Covid, this group continSunrisers Exercise Club ued to meet on the Kiva Patio lead by YouTube videos on an iPad. With the commencement of the Activity Center construction, the group began meeting in Studio 1 and 2 of the Fitness Center but found the TVs were old and not compatible with streaming.

Following a request to your Sun City Vistoso Foundation, a grant was made for the purchase of a new TV so that all of the participants could see and follow the videos.

If you need to get your blood flowing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings (and at our age, don’t we all?), join this active group. You will feel better and your day will be terrific.

The class of five participants soon came to realize that Bill likes nothing better than teaching. For the last 12 years, he has concentrated on throwing large bowls, but he has a special interest in mug handles as well. Bill says, “I like the mug to be both comfortable and pretty.”

If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come and join us. An ongoing group project is making croceted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats.

If you wish to donate bags, please flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway, or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one, no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Please do not drop off newspaper bags as they do not work for this project, unfortunately.

This picture was taken in April at the Sculpture Club’s annual pizza party, prior to members starting their summer travels. During this year, the club gained seven members that signed up and participated in a class taught by Aleda Haug. Several projects have been completed by various members, and some of the pictures have been shared in the past year Tipster articles. The club also had to deal with supply chain issues, as polymer clay orders were delayed; however, that did not hamper the creativity of the members of the sculpture group.

The Sewing Room is quieter these days after the departure of seasonal residents. It’s a time to slow things down, even though we continue to work on our projects. Currently, we are sewing capri pants for girls, which include a colorful tank top. There are a few quilters working on child and baby quilts. It’s also time to clean out closets and cupboards and take stock of what’s on hand. Even though we are small in number, we’re mighty in spirit. Now would be a good time to join Thimblelenas and get oriented to the Sewing Room. Or, stop in any Monday or Thursday morning to discover what Casa Amigas is all about.

Our featured artist of the month is Rose Stapfer, an Arizona native. She joined the Silversmith Club, “Los Plateros,” 27 years ago, after trying four or five other art forms. She recalls that Keith Staley was her mentor. He was a very accomplished silversmith and geologist and was active in the club until age 99. Rose served on the board for several years as treasurer, secretary and membership chairman. She is also one of the shop monitors and a trainer for new members. Rose believes that Rose Stapfer silversmithing is a very rewarding hobby. You use your creativity in both the cutting of stones and making the silver piece. Upon completion, you have created a piece of jewelry that you can enjoy wearing. She strongly recommends giving it a try, especially if you like to create something with your hands.

A new training program has just been designed for all Woodworking Club members who wish to enhance their woodworking skills. This has been a joint effort by some of the Wood Shop’s senior monitors, including this month’s featured woodworker, Dave Goff.

Dave developed a love for woodworking in junior and senior high school. After 40 years as a structural engineer, he rediscovered this early love after moving to SCOV four years ago. The March theme was Seafood Feast (see photo; many additional mouth-watering photos are on the website).

Since everyone brings part of the shared meal, the hosts can be spared huge effort. Each dining group decides how to translate the month’s theme into menus. Aquatone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water.

To get the full benefits of Pilates, a person should understand the basic principles. This may take a little time and patience, as the exercises may be different from others you are familiar with, but they are fun, interesting and challenging. Pilates can even become addictive. It teaches proper balance, breathing and how to focus on strengthening your core (your abdomen and back muscles). Constant movement from one exercise to another results in developing strength and stamina, and your posture is improved. The spine lengthens and joint flexibility and mobility increase.

Vistoso Cyclists membership is only $15/year, hard to believe, given we are one of the best cycling clubs for seniors in the nation. We offer several hundred scheduled rides year-round, among four different ride subgroups, from 20 to 60+ miles, to cafe destinations within Tucson and nearby towns, utilizing both pathways and roadways. The little nondescript Bell’s Vireo is often heard, but rarely seen. Its cheery song is loud and, here in SCOV, it lasts most of the summer.

Listen for it: the Bell’s song is a jumble that usually ends with “meet cha.” There are eight species of vireos in Arizona, but this is the only one likely to hang in SCOV. All vireos are gleaners and eat inSteve Holmes photo sects off the tree leaves.

Tennis Club members gathered at the spring social last month. We celebrated and welcomed 30 new members to the SCOV Tennis Club who joined since the be-

ginning of the tennis season this past year. Our growing tennis club outpaces the USTA impressive growth of tennis nationwide and is the biggest increase in two years. Welcome new members. A study by Medicareful living, found that senior tennis players “displayed high aerobic capacity, greater bone density, lower body fat, and more strength.” Another study found that “playing tennis may increase your life expectancy by nearly 10 years,” not to mention the health benefits of good company and fun. So dust off that racket and come join in the game. There is always room for more at any skill level. Wallyball is volleyball played on a racquetball court with three to five players on a side. Players use the side walls to create angles, but the ball cannot hit the ceiling or the back wall of the opposing team. It is a terrific aerobic activity that tones muscles and improves coordination and balance.
