From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors jmitchscov@gmail.com

What a Difference a Day Makes —And Even More, a Year by Jim Mitchell I’m dating myself by thinking of Dinah Washington’s “What a Difference a Day Makes,” but if “24 little hours” can make such a difference, think of what 365 days of 2021 made for our community. This time last year, we had facilities shut down, masks required, restaurant take-out only and no vaccines available to us. As we enter 2022, not only are our facilities open (with guidelines), but most of our clubs are meeting again, committees are resuming their work on enhancing our amenities, and neighbors are having block parties after a long hiatus. In other words, we’re focusing on building a bright future together as the active adult SCOV community we enjoy. The upcoming election gives each household an opportunity to participate in shaping that future. This year, three members of the Board will have served their three-year terms (Chris Ludwig, Howard Schulz and me). At our December meeting, the Nominating Committee presented the slate of six candidates running for the three available positions. Now the Election Committee takes over the process. They will record a video interview with each candidate and post them on our website, Monday, January 31. Then on Monday, February 7, at 9 AM, and again at 6 PM, the committee will host two forums via Zoom with candidates answering questions residents submitted. The video of those forums will be posted on our website by February 15. In the meantime, candidates will submit flyers and answer a separate set of questions for the February Tipster. Individual campaigning will begin when that Tipster is available the afternoon of January 31. Traditionally, friends of candidates have hosted coffees for those running, so friends and neighbors can ask specific questions. Ballots go out via email or USPS on Tuesday, February 15, with a ballot deadline of Monday, March 21. Election results will be announced at the Board meeting on Tuesday, March 22. During the process, candidates will be asked many questions. But to me, it comes down to one basic question. What difference have you made (or would as a Board member)

Looking Back; Looking Ahead I hope your holidays have been merry and bright. As Sun City Oro Valley looks out the windshield of our community bus to the future with so many possibilities, we always glance in the rearview mirror at our past. We see the past couple of years have presented their fair share of trials, and we have also been able to use many opportunities to our advantage. This past year seems to be much better than the previous year. We’ve been able to reopen all of our facilities, and in large part, we are back to operations very similar to pre-pandemic. In the process, despite having to purchase personal protective equipment and supplies, we were able to tighten our belt in other areas and came in under budget financially. The excess funds were largely allocated by the Board of Directors to the Capital fund for future capital projects. As we glance in the rear view mirror, overall we saw many successes. So looking ahead to this next year, you can expect more of the same. In the distance, we will see the Activity Center renovation project moving forward and hopefully completed during this year. There are the possibilities of bumps in the road, and we may experience delays due to construction supply chain problems and labor shortages, but if all goes well, we will see this project culminating around the end of October. As we look down the road as far as we can see, no one can see when the pandemic will be brought under control, but as we have done in the past, we will navigate the curves in the road and adapt as best we can. Just as we look at a road map for guidance, we will look to those who have expertise in guiding us into the future. Our Board of Directors has done an excellent job in getting us through the fog that blocks our view from time to time. They give direction, and as the driver of this community bus, I drive us through. My staff all do their best to make sure all the parts of our bus work at their maximum efficiency. Together we do our best to keep us on the road and safely moving forward. As passengers on our bus, you all have a part to play. I am truly thankful for the many words of encouragement that so many of you have given to me, my staff, the Board of Directors and to each other. Your support has been amazing and very much appreciated. I express a very heartfelt “Thank you!”

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle! Why We Love Dark Skies

E

ver wonder why there are so few street lamps in SCOV? Sure it saves money; however, the true driver is reduced light pollution. Light pollution hinders the ability of astronomers using ground-based telescopes to study the night skies. Our community participates along with Tucson in the Southern Arizona Chapter of the International Dark Sky Association, whose goal is to minimize light pollution for the benefit of astronomy. Tucson is known as the “Astronomy Capital of the World.” The annual value of astronomy to the area’s economy is over $250 million dollars. On the mountaintops in the Tucson area, there are three major observatories: Mount Lemmon (SkyCenter), Kitt Peak, and Mount Graham. All are open to the public through reservations. The Mount Lemmon facility (SkyCenter) has nine telescopes, one of which is dedicated to identifying asteroids that might pose a threat of striking the earth. The University of Arizona’s SkyCenter program, a public astronomy outreach Star party program, uses two others. Reservations for its five-hour program can be made online. Kitt Peak National Observatory is one of the largest gatherings of astronomical instruments in the northern hemisphere with 27 telescopes on site. It is located 55 miles southwest of Tucson and normally open to the public, though currently closed due to Covid. The world’s largest binocular telescope, Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) Observatory, is located on Mount Graham near Safford, AZ. The binocular design of the LBT consists of two identical 8.4m mirrors mounted side-by-side functioning as an 11.8m telescope. In telescopes, the bigger the mirror area the better the telescope. Mount Graham is also home to the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope. Yes, Mount Graham binocular telescope even the Pope is interested in astronomy. The larger a telescope’s mirror, the more light it is capable of gathering. More gathered light yields better images for the astronomers to study. These very large mirrors, over 27 feet (8.4m) in diameter, are manufactured right here in Tucson at the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab on the UArizona campus. The Mirror Lab’s 90-minute tour (currently suspended due to Covid) provides a unique opportunity to learn how innovative engineering and optical technology melds with manufacturing techniques to produce the largest and most advanced giant

telescope mirrors in the world. With all the astronomy professionals in the Tucson area, the SCOV Astronomy Club has fantastic up-to-date learning opportunities at our disposal. These local professionals give exciting presentations on their areas of expertise at our monthly lectures. For instance, the membership has heard first hand from the recent discoverers of a black hole. The Astronomy Club hosts star parties on a regular basis on the golf cart parking lot behind The Views Restaurant. Members do star, galaxy and planet viewing with either binoculars or five-to-seven telescopes supplied by members willing to share. For some parties, the club invites Chuck Dugan, owner of Astronomy Adventures Arizona and a professional astronomer. Chuck provides an entertaining time focusing on astronomical events of the evening. SCOV Astronomy Club is also a service organization. Twelve years ago, the club decided every fifth grade student at the Coronado K-8 School in Catalina should be introduced to astronomy by gifting each student with a telescope. Club members provide instruction in the telescope’s use and host star parties for the students. Since its inception, over 1,000 telescopes have been distributed. The funding for this program comes from members’ contributions through the Public School Tax Credit, a dollar-for-dollar reduction in an individual’s Arizona State income tax. Anyone in SCOV can participate in supporting this worthwhile venture. Annually, five students from the Coronado School are also eligible for club-sponsored scholarships to UArizo- Coronado School students receiving their telescopes na’s prestigious Astronomy Camp held each summer at SkyCenter. The one-week camp provides a genuinely unique educational experience in astronomy. Our Dark Skies provide jobs for the Tucson area, entertainment viewing the universe, and educational opportunities for local students and us. That is why we love Dark Skies.

Walking The Views Golf Course Did you know you can walk or drive your golf cart on our beautiful golf course pathways outside of golf play hours? Signs, with posted walking times, are at the entrance of each cart crossing. When walking, all consideration must be provided to the paying golfers. These considerations support the option of sharing the course to the benefit of both golfers and walkers. Bicycles, rollerblades and skateboards are not permitted on the golf course at any time. You can take your dog on the course too. Dogs may be in a golf cart or walk on the golf course during the posted hours. Keep your dogs on a leash that is no more than six (6) feet long and under the control of a responsible adult. No retractable leashes please. Keep dogs off the golf course greens, fairways, tee boxes, bunkers, or construction areas. As always, pick up after the dogs and properly dispose of any dog waste. If your pup is causing a disturbance, such as frequently barking or being aggressive toward other animals and/or people, please exit the golf course. Remember, we share this area with many wild animals, so be aware of your surroundings. You are walking at your own risk. But be sure to take in the views, soak in our special relationship with the wildlife and enjoy this beautiful amenity.

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Happy New Year Many people start the year with resolutions. Some of these resolutions are kept and yet others soon pass. Always keep in mind that any time of the year is a time to make changes in your life. So many changes have been made that I am sure our winter residents are a bit confused as to where clubs are meeting. Always check the SCOV calendar, Tipster and “This Week In SCOV.” May 2022 bring you health and happiness.

Community Services - Katy Mosier Architectural Coordinator, Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 Time for a New Roof? Currently, there are three ways to replace your roof in SCOV. Each of them requires approval by our HOA prior to installation. One way that has been used by a large number of residents is called “lift and re-lay” where the majority of existing tiles are lifted, new underlayment is installed, and the existing tiles are replaced with some closely matching ones if there has been breakage. Traditionally, there is a 10-15% breakage rate and any tiles used in lieu of the broken ones have come from a stockpile that Eagle Roofing Products has provided. The bad news is that Eagle Roofing is no longer producing these slurry tiles (grey tiles with painted backs). The roof tiles originally used in the construction of SCOV thirty-plus years ago have become outdated in terms of the manufacturing process to produce them. At that time, the concrete tiles had their color applied by a surface bonding process that can break down over time. There is little or no supply of these old tiles unless a roofer has been saving tiles from previous jobs. As the matching tiles are no longer produced and inventories dwindle, it will become difficult to do lift and re-lay on homes with original roofs and will require a more costly full new tile replacement of the roof. Secondly,

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, January 2022

over time, finding replacement tiles to replace weather-damaged tiles will become an increased challenge leading to a need to replace the full roof. In addition, new additions to our homes that change or increase the roof profile and/or size may require replacing all roof tiles with new ones in order to match aesthetically. The second way to replace your roof is with all new ARC pre-approved new Eagle tiles. Current technology uses a “color through” process in which the color becomes part of the concrete. The ARC has studied what is available, and in addition to currently pre-approved tiles, they have added eight new choices. Samples of these tiles are available for check-out at the Welcome Center. The third way to choose your tiles is to go up to the Eagle Roofing showroom in Phoenix and choose something that is not pre-approved by the ARC. You would then submit your choice to the ARC for consideration. The showroom is available by appointment only through Mariah Salazar, Design Center Coordinator. She may be contacted at 602-346-7149.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 New Year, New Exercise It’s a new year, and maybe you’ve resolved to start an exercise program. If so, good for you. Getting regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do, and it’s one of the most common New Year’s resolutions of Americans each year. Just make sure you start off on the right foot with these helpful tips: Take it slow. Set small goals. After all, you’re in this for a lifetime. Talk to your doctor before getting started, especially if it’s been 8-12 months or longer since you’ve last exercised, you’ve had a large weight gain, or you’ve had a noticeable change in health. Evaluate your personality. Do you like to exercise alone, in a large group or with a partner? The answer to this question will help you decide what type of exercise will keep you motivated to stick with your new routine. Be safe. If you’re exercising outside, make safety a priority. Dress for the weather, wear reflectors and light colors if you’ll be out when it’s dark, and carry a cell phone with you. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns with the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2 and holiday hours are noted on page 5. Tuesday, January 11, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, January 12, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Republic Services scov@republicservices.com www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/trash

In December, all SCOV trash and recycle pickups changed to Monday. Don’t forget: Republic Services picks up between 6 AM and 6 PM on Mondays. You must have your trash and recycle bins out at 6 AM or you risk a missed pickup. SCOV has a dedicated customer service representative with Republic Services. Many of you are aware of the labor challenges the country is currently experiencing, and Republic Services highly encourages residents to email any service issues, rather than telephone, in order to receive the best service. Our representative can be reached at scov@ republicservices.com. This email is listed on the Republic magnet you received in your annual dues mailing. Visit our web page where you can find the following information: 1) Recycling: View a video and web page on what Republic takes in their recycling bins. Glass is accepted for recycling. 2) Holiday schedule: Check if you need to shift setting your bins out due to a holiday. 3) Report a problem: Missed pickup? Bin damaged? Click the Report Missed Pickup tab, fill out our form and Republic will receive a copy.

A palette of Southwest (Talavera) colors has been available for homeowners to view and comment on. The results of the online survey on the suggested colors showed 61.83% in favor, 33.2% not in favor and 4.98% indifferent. The voting at the Welcome Center where colors were on display was 43 yes and 12 no. Swatches of these colors are now available at the Ace Hardware store on 1st and Tangerine. They are located at the paint counter in a file of HOA colors. The proposed new Talavera colors would be allowed only on the front entry door. They would not be allowed on the security/screen door, garage/golf cart door or side entry door into the garage. The Board will be voting on these optional colors at its January meeting along with proposed changes to the Development Standards.

The Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) may meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month as needed. The SCOV website will have current meeting notices. The current ACRTF practice is for vaccinated members to attend in person. Non-vaccinated committee members and all others may attend via Zoom. An updated version of “A Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility Requirements for the Artisan Clubs of SCOV” is now available on the SCOV website. The SCOV website (go to Members > Committees > ACRTF) provides the ACRTF Charter and other information for the task force.

Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

I use the monthly SCOV Resale Report to remove those who have sold their homes. However, the new owners are not added. You must ask to be included. This includes those who move within SCOV. In your listing, we allow one hometown and one occupation per person. These items are included just for affinity purposes, so use whatever suits you. Hometown can be where you were born, grew up, lived longest, lived last, where your other home is or where you were happiest. Occupation is similar: your main occupation, your last occupation, your favorite occupation. This category isn’t meant to track whether you’re currently working or retired. To update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “Change your directory listing.” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

Election Election 2022 The Election Committee is preparing for another election cycle. Ballots will be sent in mid-February. There are three Director positions to be filled. Also, expect at least two initiatives for your consideration. The vote will be electronic unless you have opted out of all electronic communications from the Association. If you vote by hard copy, the ballot must be mailed to Florida (the Association is no longer accepting ballots in the Administration office). The “Meet the Candidate” video interview will provide the opportunity to view and listen to the candidate. There will be a web page listed under Member Services > Vote March 2022 with information. February plans are to have at least two forums where questions will be asked of the candidates, so you can get a feel for their understanding of and passion for SCOV. These forums will also be available online. If you would like to submit candidate questions for consideration by the Election Committee, please bring them to the Welcome Center. More details on the candidates and initiatives will be provided as we get closer to the election.

Finance-Budget Chair Tim Kelley tkelleyscov@gmail.com Quarterly Zoom meetings on Mondays. Check SCOV calendar for dates and times.

The Finance Budget Committee (FBC) meetings are typically held quarterly. The current FBC practice is for vaccinated members to attend in person. Non-vaccinated committee members and all others may attend via Zoom. When necessary, the FBC will meet more frequently (e.g., budget preparation, audit results and when information is requested by the Board of Directors). Find meeting dates, times, location and other information on the SCOV website. Current financial information is also available there. The FBC will be meeting on Monday, January 24, 2 PM, to review the second quarter financial results. The FBC will meet on Monday, February 28, 2 PM, for the first review of the proposed 2022-2023 SCOV budget.

Your Gift Shop welcomes you to browse new products with the artists who provide Joyce Simmons (left) and Pam Dage a beautiful spot to visit with family and friends. Featured artists are Joyce Simmons and Pam Dage. Joyce scours the world looking for special components: Tibetan turquoise discovered in Vienna, jasper, opals and raku from Mexico, observing the “soul color” of her treasures and creating a unique design that will call to the woman who wears it. Designed with love and attention, no two pieces are exactly the same. While looking for a new hobby, Pam discovered pour acrylic painting. She says, “I made many paintings, but I was missing my jewelry making, since I could not get into the silver club, and decided to try combining jewelry making and painting. The jewelry reminds me of my painting, and the painting reminds me of the jewelry.”

Holiday Lights Chair Linda Bretz 603-459-4219 nashuachristmas@comcast.net www.SCOVLites.com

Some of the many home owners and angels who volunteered their talents to make this year’s tour and future displays a resounding success

Our first year’s Holiday House Tour was a fantastic success. Seven homeowners displayed their artistic talents by opening their homes to SCOV residents in search of lifting their holiday spirits, getting new ideas for their own home decoration and helping with the fundraising for future holiday lights displays. Our talented volunteers helped hammer the flower lights into the grounds around the restaurant, near the front of the Artisan Center and around the Del Webb road sign. They placed some gorgeous lights in the clock tower for the delight of SCOV residents. If you haven’t yet ventured out between 6 and 10 PM, it is well worth the visit. We are very grateful for everyone’s help to make this a success in 2021 and years to come. We hope your holidays were wonderful and that this coming year brings great health, happiness and generosity of spirit for family, friends and neighbors.

Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Let’s Begin Anew As we begin a new year in our beautiful community, if you have not already made a New Year’s resolution, it is not too late to do so. How about making a resolution to take pride and care of ourselves, our homes and our property? Most of us have already done that, but just think how wonderful our community would look if we all did it. Our committee members have really enjoyed seeing the beautiful holiday decorations throughout the community over the past few weeks. As a friendly reminder, seasonal decorations should be removed by January 15. We appreciate all residents who continually take pride in the appearance of their property, and we are very pleased with how beautiful our community is looking to usher in the New Year. As we begin 2022, we wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy and prosperous year.

Posse Chair Linda Simōn 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)

Happy New Year. Your Posse board will meet this month to decide when to restart Posse patrols. We are excited to resume serving our community but need your help. Covid brought changes to our volunteer base. Some longtime members decided to move to be closer to family. Others decided it was time for them to retire. Obviously, we thank them all for their service and wish them well. Now it’s time for others to join our ranks and volunteer. We ask you to consider the Posse and volunteer to go on two patrols a year. Each patrol is three hours long. For information, please call Linda Simōn 520-789-7169. We look forward to welcoming you to the Posse.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, WC1 and via Zoom

The Properties Committee had another active year in 2021. We conducted a facilities inspection that included building grounds and interiors in addition to the golf course pump station and cart paths. The Chalk Creek Wash was inspected after the monsoon and, surprisingly, very little change was observed. We continued to monitor the performance of the eight solar electric systems at HOA buildings and were pleased the Association purchased the systems in November. At the request of the Long Range Planning Committee, Properties Committee members conducted a study and prepared a report on securing and monitoring access to various sports courts and community buildings. In addition, long-time committee member, Dale Foster, was recognized with the annual SCOV Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding work on the solar installation project oversight. The committee looks forward to continuing these and other efforts in 2022. Our recent meetings have been in person and via Zoom. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.

It’s going to be another exciting season this year, and we look forward to serving your golfing needs. We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year. This month, we host the Oro Valley Senior Championship on January 8-9. The event will draw some of the finest players around the southwest. There are two divisions in the tournament with the championship division playing gross only and the regular division playing gross and net with a maximum of a 15 handicap. On Saturday, January 22, from 10 AM - 3 PM, we conduct our annual Helicopter Ball Drop along with a Demo Club Fitting Day. We provide a great barbeque with music and fun. The following golf club companies will be in attendance for you to try out their new equipment: Titleist, Cobra, Srixon, Cleveland, and XXIO. The Helicopter Ball Drop is a 50/50 fundraiser for the men’s and women’s golf associations. To participate, you purchase a golf ball(s). The cost is $10/ball, $25/3 balls, $50/7 balls or $100/15 balls. Happy New Year from golf course maintenance. When the decision was made not to overseed the fairways, several projects were planned during the winter months to replace the normal mowing, fertilizing, and watering tasks that would not be needed. Many of those projects have already been completed. The large tree and brush on the left side of #5 were removed to open a view of the fairway from the back tees. The cactus forest on the left side of the tees on #13 was lowered and thinned out to open a view of the fairway. The trees on the right side of #11 tees were removed to open a view of the fairway and encourage tee shots away from the homes left

of the cart path. Trees and brush were removed in front of the tees on both #1 and #12 to open views of those holes. Drainage projects have also been completed. The large puddle that forms from irrigation water on the cart path in front of #14 tees was drained. A large puddle on the cart path between #6 fairways was drained and sodded as well. The next projects are more tree and desert trimming around tee boxes, including thinning of cactus and trees left of #14 tees, and left of the tees on #15. #18 will be trimmed at both the tees and behind the green to open views.

Recording the minutes of our club’s meetings is the main function of our secretaries. This may sound simple, but it can be very challenging to accurately record our discussions, reports and actions. The position of secretary for women’s golf clubs dates back to 1873. The posiKelli Mannon and Deborah DeCuir tion was held by a gentleman. It was not until 1886 that the first female secretary was elected at the Carnoustie Ladies Golf Club in Ireland. We are very fortunate to have two members that share this role in our club, Deborah DeCuir and Kelli Mannon. We all can appreciate the detail and focus required to accurately record any meeting. We have two sets of meetings that require taking notes: the monthly general meetings and the monthly board meetings. Deborah DeCuir and Kelli Mannon handle this responsibility very well. Thank you, Deborah and Kelli; you make a great team.

As we make our way through this new year, I like to look back at all the trials and accomplishments we experienced and take stock and find the things we are most grateful for. 2021 offered a lot to be thankful for, starting with our front of the house team. Our servers did an amazing job keeping up with all the Manny Vasquez changes in CDC regulations and procedures. These wonderful people kept us safe and moving forward as we navigated through these trying times. With Marti leading our serving staff, we have been able to provide great service to our guests. Even when times got rough, she was cool and calm, setting the example for all of us. Also, a special shout-out to Luann Detloff for our festive aprons. As a true leader, Azura, our wonderful sous chef, not only kept the back of the house running smoothly, she also set the example, proving that a positive attitude and hard work will always win the day. Azura is our constant. She is the cornerstone that the rest of her crew can depend on. This year has also given me an opportunity to prove myself to you. I had the pleasure of working under Chef Paul Blackwell. I was able to learn so much in the little time we spent together and I am truly grateful that he saw value in me. Chef Paul and I shared a kitchen philosophy: preparedness, kindness, and a positive attitude will always win. I have been your chef for only three months; however, I have been organizing, training and promoting a culture of kindness and teamwork for the last three years. My goal is to continue to provide great food and to help build The Views into something we all are proud of. Thank you for taking the time to read this article. I hope to see you soon.

Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace, and make creative arrangements for your home.

“Cranes Into Sunset” by Susan Taylor Sculpture Pres. Laurie Lichaa 520-991-9953 Mon., 9 AM-5 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio

The Sculpture Club meets Mondays in Catalina Vista/Art Studio. If you are interested in becoming a member of our club or learning more about what we do, please stop in on Monday mornings or contact Laurie Lichaa. If you would like to see some of our work, we have sculptures in the display cases in Catalina Vista and the SCOV Library. The picture illustrates the beginning phases of developing a relief sculpture. As you can see, Coni Arseneau started this project sketching the proposed design. All sculptures need an armature/foundation. In this case, Coni uses hardboard as the foundation to cut out the design. She then covered the board with metal mesh to which the polymer will adhere. Aluminum

foil is used as the foundation for the earth/rocks, where the cactus and plants will go. The end goal for this sculpture is to be used as a clock.

SFK is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization

As we joyfully begin our journey through another year, Seniors for Kids (SFK) has a lot on its plate. Please attend our meeting Thursday, January 6, 8 AM, Catalina Vista. We will discuss our finances, plan for the year’s activities and look for more members to share in the fun of giving. It will be a very important meeting. During 2021, Casa Amigas provided clothing, crib sheets, tote bags, quilts, afghans and other items to several community organizations. All items are either sewn, serged, knitted, crocheted or quilted by members of our group. Many hours are spent in the Sewing Room or at home by these members who consider it a labor of love to give their time and skills. The total number of items for this year was 2,545. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to give back and assist those in need. We’re always looking for members who love to sew and create using fabric and fiber. Cheer Bears

If you didn’t make it to SFK’s toy distribution, here is a small peek at what was displayed. It was a powerful year

After all the items that were made by the SFK were displayed to the public on December 2, they were boxed and loaded in cars to go to TMC, Banner Children’s Hospital, Aviva Children’s Services, Tri-Community Food Bank, Three Points Clinic and Family First. Thank you to the whole community for supporting Kuddles for Kids with such generosity. If helping children in need would get your creative juices flowing, stop by the Artisan rooms and see where your skills might help SFK provide cheer to children in need.

Nothing has really stopped us this year. Over 400 bears were embroidered, stitched, stuffed and packaged to move on to new owners during 2021. They were distributed to various children’s homes Here are the marching Cheer Bears going to (Aviva, Three cheer up children. Points, More Than A Bed, First Family), Golder Ranch Fire Department and a number of hospitals in the Oro Valley/Tucson area. Our thanks to the Tennis Club for a significant donation that assists in providing materials for sewing and creating. We have approximately 25 members in our group, but never more than 12 in the room. We spread out and have a great time creating and chitchatting. It is a good time and builds friendships. If, in your sorting and cleaning out, you find you have some polyester fiberfill, we need it to plump up the tummies of the bears. Donations are always accepted. Thank you for your support. It is a new year. Please remember that kindness is good for all. Happy 2022 and may you be blessed.

shows some of John’s work. In 1992, Robert Taylor introduced hooking to our community, at which time John joined. Today, John is so generous in sharing his knowledge and expertise with those interested in learning the art. As you can see in the artistic pieces in the picture, John has an interest and appreciation for southwest art. Another interesting fact about John’s art is that he dyes the wool to get the color gradation that makes his pieces so spectacular.

This club provides an enjoyable social evening getting to know some of your SCOV neighbors who enjoy cooking (and eating) interesting food. Our monthly (December - March) themed dinners in individual members’ homes provide relaxing fun as we explore various cuisines (e.g., French) or get creative with more ambiguous themes (e.g., food in songs). Since everyone brings part of the meal, it’s not a huge effort for the hosts. We also have several catered/restaurant events each year. Our December dinner theme was “Soups and Homemade Breads.” Please visit our website to see photos and details. Contact a club officer for more information if you’d like to join the club. Note: Proof of Covid vaccination is required to attend club activities.

Scrabble Jan Fischer 520-825-2401 fischer_janice@comcast.net Fri., 1-3 PM, Desert Oasis

Having traversed through one of the worst years in recent history, SCOV has finally come out on the other side. The year 2021 has passed at the speed of light, and once again the holidays have come and gone. The Scrabble Club has survived another year and is looking forward to the new year with old members returning and hoping new residents and potential new members will check us out. Our club is open to all who are looking for a different and challenging afternoon. Humans use visual-spatial skills every day, driving cars, grocery shopping and learning to use new tools. According to a recent study of people ages 60 to 93, those who did puzzles, either word puzzles like Scrabble, Sudoku or number games had scored higher on cognitive tests and suffer less from depression and dementia. The Scrabble Club wishes all our residents best wishes for a great new year. During this happy season be thankful for every day in our awsome community .

If you enjoy a challenge, come in and observe our game of Pan (Panguingue). It’s a very fun and interesting game. We would love to have you join us and see what fun it can be.

The acorn woodpecker is a surprise resident here in SCOV and, while there are lots of acorns for them to tuck away, in Arizona they usually prefer higher elevations. We are a 90+ member, activity-oriented group and all SCOV residents are invited to Steve Holmes photo join us on our field trips to learn more about the birds here in Arizona. Wheels for Kids Tom Terfehr 520-789-7243 www.azwfk.org

Wheels for Kids (WFK) is pleased to announce that the WFK Board of Directors presented a Distinguished Service Award to founding member and SCOV resident, Dick Swain. In 2007 Dick Swain had an idea: collect, refurbish and donate used bicycles to put a smile on the face of kids who didn’t think they would ever get to experience the joy of riding their own bike. He recruited a few cycling friends to help, and Wheels For Kids was born. From a modest beginning of a few kindred spirits, it has grown to 30+ volunteers today and has donated over 4,000 bikes to kids, adults and families in greater Tucson. Work continues, and each year over 350 bikes are collected, refurbished and delivered to those who could use a little help. Dick Swain with his award Wheels for Kids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing rehabbed bicycles to children and families in need in the Tucson area. Wheels for Kids is an all-volunteer effort, and we are always happy to welcome new people to our team. If you are interested in learning more, please visit our website or call Tom Terfehr. "SHE GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK" Local clinic has a modern, medical solution to treat your Peripheral Neuropathy and is seeing incredible results! "It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them, but I couldn't. I couldn't feel my foot! The car kept moving forward and I just couldn't get my foot on the brake. And CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me."

issues as was the case with Dan. "I said I wasn't going to drive again, what if that had been a pedestrian?" It is all too common that peripheral neuropathy and it's debilitating symptoms interfere with a person's ability to live their life. Dan was now reliant on his wife to drive him around. Even simple pleasures like driving to the golf range or taking his wife out to dinner was out of his capabilities. And even more common, Dan's general practitioner and several specialists told him there was nothing they could do besides prescribe pills to hopefully ease his pain.

"I can't lie" confides Dan. "I was skeptical at first. When I was told by specialists that nothing could be done and then there's an Acupuncturist here in town who tells me she can help. It turns out she was right! About 3 months after treatment started I was able to confidently drive myself to my appointments! My wife and I even celebrated by buying a new car! It's hard to put into words how incredible this is, quite frankly Kari Hahn gave me my life back!"
