INCOMING HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE Dear Sierra Canyon Community, During this holiday season, I am filled with gratitude and honored to be preparing to become Sierra Canyon’s next Head of School. Serving in several roles over the last ten years has shown me the magic of this community through the eyes of an administrator and a parent, and it has deepened my appreciation for what makes Sierra Canyon so special.

From the beginning, I was drawn to Sierra Canyon as a diverse, independent school that believes in helping students find their own version of success. It is a place that prepares students academically and socially for life beyond graduation, without losing sight of balance, wellbeing, and the importance of childhood. I see that commitment every day in our classrooms, in our arts and athletics, and in the relationships that make our campuses feel like home.

This season also invites reflection on the strong foundation that has been built over time, from our visionary Founders, Mick Horwitz and Howard Wang, to Jim Skrumbis’ thoughtful leadership over the past two decades. One of the greatest gifts of this transition is the opportunity to continue learning from Jim, whose partnership, guidance, and steady care for this school have shaped Sierra Canyon in lasting ways.

As we look ahead to the new year, I am excited to get to know more of you and to continue listening, learning, and working alongside our dedicated faculty and staff in service of our students. Thank you for the trust you place in Sierra Canyon and for the many ways you strengthen this community each day.

CAN YOU SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO SIERRA CANYON?

My connection to Sierra Canyon dates back to the summer of 1990, when I was a camper at Sierra Canyon Day Camp. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, SCDC was the gold standard for Day Camps, and I have memories of singing with my group at closing circle in the Amphitheater that I felt was the size of the Hollywood Bowl. Little did I know then that this would plant the seeds for a lifelong bond with the School.

My path in educational leadership began in high school when I served as Student Body President at Taft High School in Woodland Hills, a large public school with over 3,000 students. There, I collaborated with administrators on hiring committees for teachers and staff, and I even lobbied the school board for funding to upgrade our campus facilities. It was my first taste of advocacy and impact, showing me how student voices could shape real change.

After graduating from UCLA, I dove into the high-energy world of television production at Fox Sports. As a Production Assistant, I worked on iconic shows like Fox NFL Sunday, Fox Saturday Baseball, and NASCAR on Fox, even traveling across the country to produce ice-skating events. A career highlight was contributing to the Super Bowl XXXVI pre-game segment in February 2002 (delayed from its original date due to the September 11 attacks), where I helped craft a feature spotlighting all living U.S. presidents alongside Nancy Reagan. But the glamour faded fast. Those grueling nights, driving home at 3:00 a.m. after marathon shoots, only to return at 7:00 a.m. for live broadcasts, left me yearning for a deeper purpose. I craved a career where I could uplift people daily, much like I had as Student Body President and as a Peer College Counselor at Taft.

At Taft, with just one college counselor serving over 3,000 students, my mentor, Linda Zimring, trained a group of peer counselors to bridge the gap. I advised classmates whose last names began with "C" on everything from course planning and test prep to building college lists. It was transformative; I loved guiding young people toward their futures. When doubts about a long-time career in TV crept in, Linda's wisdom steered me toward education. "Start in university admissions," she said, "to see decisions from the inside."

That advice launched my career at the University of Southern California (USC), where I reviewed and made admission decisions on over 1,000+ applications annually, traveled nationwide for recruitment, and interviewed eager applicants. Reading stories of driven scholars, athletes, and artists who also volunteered, innovated, and led in their communities was inspiring, but it also highlighted my next steps. I now wanted to know these students in person, not just read their files.

That realization pulled me to the high school side of the desk, specifically independent schools with intimate student-counselor ratios. For a decade at Viewpoint School in Calabasas, I worked in the College Counseling Office, coached Girls and Boys tennis (winning five CIF Southern Section championships!), taught Human Development, and bridged alumni relations in Development. It was fulfilling, but growth called. Which came in the form of Steve Burnett, Sierra Canyon's Director of Student Advancement, who reached out in January 2015, just one month after my son Austin was born. Joining Sierra Canyon as the first Director of College Counseling was a dream come true. Under the visionary leadership of Head of School Jim Skrumbis, I expanded the College Counseling Program by developing innovative workshops, streamlining processes, and cultivating a culture of holistic support. I eventually moved into the roles of Upper School Director and Associate Head of School as my desire to impact and work with more students of differing age groups increased. A decade later, it is a true honor to have moved into administrative roles with increasing leadership responsibilities, making every day different, challenging, and incredibly rewarding as I have the privilege of working with exceptional students and supportive families.

What drew you to Sierra Canyon and what has made you want to lead it?

I was drawn to Sierra Canyon because it balances rigorous academics with athletics, arts, and genuine student and faculty relationships, much like other top independent schools, but without the downsides of cutthroat competition or high anxiety driving kids to exhaustion. Here, students support each other instead of clashing over the same narrow paths, creating a healthier and more inclusive environment. That is what deepened my commitment.

SIERRA CANYON ARTS EXPRESSION OF EXCELLENCE: FALL ARTS HIGHLIGHTS

Sierra Canyon’s comprehensive Arts program inspires students to explore their passions, refine their talents, and push the boundaries of their creativity. With state-of-the-art facilities and dedicated faculty, the program empowers young artists to create meaningful work and achieve success at local, national, and international levels. Congratulations to the following students and alumni for their outstanding achievements in the arts this fall: Jayden S. '27 and Damon T. '26 (GRAMMY Camp Los Angeles), Sahil B. '25, Zahra B. '25, Dean G. '26, and Nikhil M. '26 (All-American High School Film Festival Selections), and Dean G. '26 (YoungArts Award Recipient and Calabasas Film Festival Student Showcase Winner).

TRAILBLAZER RECORDS Trailblazer Records, an Upper School course and student-led music label, spotlighted collaboration across the Performing and Visual Arts by bringing together student musicians, producers, designers, and filmmakers to release original work. Throughout the semester, students created and shared original songs, designed cover art, and produced music videos, gaining real-world experience in the full creative process from concept to release.

THE VISUAL ARTS ARC From 2nd Grade worm’s-eye perspective drawings and collages to 7th Grade cityscapes using a horizon line and vanishing point, Sierra Canyon students build perspective skills through age-appropriate projects that develop year to year. With a thoughtfully crafted, vertically aligned arts curriculum, students move from playful discovery on the Lower Campus to refined techniques and deeper conceptual thinking on the Upper Campus.

PRODUCTIONS This fall, Sierra Canyon students across divisions took the stage in two memorable productions. The Performing Arts Department presented The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee with a cast and crew of 28 students in Grades 7–9. On the Lower Campus, the Afterschool Enrichment Program brought Shrek the Musical to life with two full casts of students in Grades 2–6. Next year, these productions will be held in the Everest Family Center for the Arts— bringing an elevated experience for our student performers and audiences.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Upper Campus arts students extend their learning beyond the classroom through immersive, real-world experiences. This fall, AP Studio Art students visited The Broad to study contemporary works up close; Trailblazer Records toured Universal Music Publishing Group and met industry professionals across marketing, touring, and A&R; and Honors Theatre Conservatory students attended an A Noise Within production to see professional theater in action.

WINTER PERFORMANCES Sierra Canyon’s winter performances showcased student talent across campuses, with Upper Campus Dance, Music, and Vocal concerts. On the Lower Campus, grade-level performances by Pre-Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, and 6th Grade students featured singing, instrumentals, and Spanish skits —bringing the season to life through music, language, and joyful expression.

TRAILBLAZER PRIDE WHERE CHAMPIONS ARE MADE: FALL ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS This fall season, sixteen outstanding senior student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. LOWER SCHOOL Lower School fall athletics offered students a wide range of opportunities, including Swimming, Girls Basketball, Flag Football, and Active Lifestyle. The season was highlighted by an impressive postseason run from the 6th Grade Blue Flag Football Team, which entered the playoffs as the fourth seed and went on to win the San Fernando Valley Private School League championship (SFVPSL).

MIDDLE SCHOOL The Middle School Girls Volleyball team delivered an exceptional season, securing back-to-back Delphic League championships. The title marked the program’s second consecutive undefeated season.

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL For the second time in school history, the Girls Volleyball Team captured the CIF-SS championship at the highest level of competition (Division 1). The team also finished the season ranked No. 3 nationally, cementing its place among the nation’s elite programs.

VARSITY GIRLS GOLF The Girls Golf Team recorded its strongest finish in program history with a top-five placement in CIF-SS Division 4. The program continues to build momentum, growing from six to nine golfers, with even more student-athletes expected to join next year.

VARSITY FOOTBALL The Football Team delivered an outstanding season, earning its third Mission League title and completing an undefeated regular season. The Trailblazers finished the year ranked No. 16 nationally, as 11 seniors continue their athletic and academic journeys at some of the nation’s most competitive and distinguished colleges and universities.

VARSITY GIRLS TENNIS The Girls Tennis Team continued its dominant run this fall, clinched its fourth consecutive Angelus League Championship and qualified for the CIFSS playoffs. The season was further highlighted by senior captain Lyric Wilson ’26, who celebrated her 100th match win as a Trailblazer.
