TheSchool'sfounders,HowardWangandMickHorwitz,hadbuiltathrivingK–8schoolanddaycampwhile dreamingofexpandingSierraCanyonintoapremierPre-Kindergartenthrough12thGradeinstitutionunlike any other. A place where students could pursue academic excellence, discover their passions, develop strongcharacter, andleavepreparedtomakeameaningfulimpactontheworld.Tobringthatvisiontolife, theyneededaleadercapableofturningpossibilityintoreality.
Andoverthenext22years,Jimdidexactlythat.
Jim's leadership was never defined by maintaining the status quo. He believed that schools should continually ask what more they can do for their students, and he approached every challenge with an entrepreneurialspirit.Whetherdevelopinganewcampus, expandingstudentopportunities, orinvestingin world-classfacilities,JimconsistentlyfocusednotonwhatSierraCanyonwas,butonwhatitcouldbecome.
The results of that vision can be seen across every corner of the School. During his tenure, Sierra Canyon opened its Upper Campus, expanded to 49 acres, developed athletic facilities, and launched the School's firstcapitalcampaign, culminatingintheconstructionoftheEverestFamilyCenterfortheArts.TheSchool earned national recognition for academic excellence, joined the prestigious Cum Laude Society, and establisheditselfasadestinationforstudentsandfamiliesseekinganexceptionaleducationalexperience.
Yet those who know Jim best understand that his proudest accomplishments cannot be measured in buildings, rankings, championships, oraccolades.
Hisgreatestlegacylivesinpeople.
Itlivesinthestudentswhorealizetheirgreatestcreative, ethical, intellectual, andphysicalpromise.Itlives inthealumniwhocontinuetocarrySierraCanyon'svaluesintocolleges, careers, andcommunitiesaround the world. It lives in the faculty and staff whom Jim empowered to think boldly and innovate freely. And it livesinthecountlessfamilieswhoentrustedSierraCanyonwiththeirchildrenandfoundacommunitythat becameasecondhome.
As Sierra Canyon enters its next chapter, Jim's influence will continue to shape the School's future.
