This short-term study abroad program immerses students in the intersections of history, culture, food, and public health in Rome. Italy is home to one of the world’s six Blue Zones, regions known for exceptional longevity, largely attributed to the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, lean proteins, and moderate wine consumption. This diet reduces inflammation and lowers the risk of chronic disease. In Rome, an emphasis on fresh, locally sourced foods and public health initiatives supports health and longevity.
Students will explore both ancient and modern public health systems, examining Roman innovations in sanitation and disease prevention alongside contemporary policies and health behaviors. Students will explore how ancient innovations, modern policies, local health behaviors, and contemporary challenges shape the Italians’ daily routines of cooking, exercising, and socializing leading to good health and well-being. Activities will include: cultural site visits, guest lectures at the American University of Rome, cooking classes and food tours, a service-learning component, physical activity, and opportunities to practice what they have learned with each other. The goal is to broaden students’ perceptions and understanding of the Mediterranean diet, Roman health and wellness concepts, and health behaviors that can be applied domestically back home in the United States, and even to improve their own health and wellness.
PROGRAM FEE: $1,800 (Airfare not included; students purchase flights independently.)
COURSEWORK
Students must enroll in either PCH 490: Health Studies Abroad (undergraduate) or PCH 570 (graduate). Course tuition is separate from the program fee and will be paid via BannerWeb or directly to the Student Accounts Office.

SCSU is Leading the Way in Research and
Southern's mascot, Otus, in Iceland!
SCSU students in Iceland experience the full spectrum of real-world research, from mastering handson environmental and marine data collection and analysis to actively engaging stakeholders in a decade-long, transdisciplinary environmental research project.
Our Students R2!
In 2025, Southern Connecticut State University joined an elite group of research-driven institutions nationwide, earning the Carnegie R2 Classification for high research spending and doctorate production. This historic milestone makes Southern the state’s first and only R2-designated institution.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR OIE STUDENTS:
• Learn from top-tier faculty conducting groundbreaking research
• Access hands-on research opportunities both at undergraduate and graduate levels
• Gain a competitive edge for research-driven careers
Keira Mulvihill, a Psychology major and Honors student, participated in an immersive research experience in Rome and Sardinia centered on the Mediterranean diet and the world-renowned Blue Zones. Keira explored the everyday habits, social connections, and lifestyle patterns that contribute to longevity in these regions and examined how those practices can be adapted in the United States. To bring her findings to life, she developed an engaging activity booklet that offers practical ways for individuals to make positive lifestyle changes.
Students gain impactful, real-world experience in environmental justice fieldwork and coastal resilience research, mastering community-based methods and navigating the complex cultural dimensions of stakeholder engagement in the Western Cape. Students study the region’s history through training in archaeological methods, human osteology, paleopathology, English history, site tours, and handson workshops.
As travelers continue to explore Patagonia, which is known for its rich biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes, the impact on the flora and fauna becomes more prevalent. SCSU students studied the potential effects visitors are having on Torres del Paine National Park, a particularly popular area. Students examined the biodiversity of the region by means of a comparison of species richness on different trails.
HONORS COLLEGE

DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY
The 2026 summer program in Poulton offers students an unprecedented field school experience in bioarchaeology. Students excavate human skeletal remains in a lost cemetery in NW England as a means to reconstruct the biological and cultural history in this region. This multidisciplinary field school provides instruction in archaeological methodology, human anatomy and physiology, paleopathology, identifying, documenting, and recording human remains, lectures in English history, tours to nearby ruins, and hands-on workshops (e.g., Medieval weaponry).
Chester, one of the best-preserved walled cities in the UK and our home base, is five miles from Poulton, a multi-period excavation site dating back to the Mesolithic period. Prior excavations have uncovered a lost chapel and graveyard. With ten thousand years of continuous occupation at this site, the archaeology has yielded artifacts from high-status Roman occupation, Bronze Age farming, Neolithic activity and Mesolithic use of the site for seasonal hunting. Students also explore local culture and cuisine. No prior experience in archaeology is required; this trip is open to all students, including students in the MS Archaeology and Cultural Resource Management Program.
