Academic Regalia

Most of the trappings that add color and drama to modern academic ceremonies date back to the Middle Ages, when universities dominated European intellectual life.

O

riginally a weapon, the university mace, for example, serves today as a ceremonial staff symbolizing the president’s authority to administer the university. Other symbols of authority include the president’s medallion and the batons.

Another vestige of the Middle Ages is the traditional academic costume — the cap, gown, and hood — which was originally the everyday apparel of the ecclesiastics who founded and controlled medieval universities.

Later, even though the universities had passed from religious to lay control, faculty and students continued to wear the academic costume. The tradition of academic garb came to America by way of the British universities and has remained a vivid part of academic ritual since Colonial days.

For many years, each university determined the style and color of its own academic costume. Near the end of the nineteenth century, however, academic costumes

became more common, and American universities adopted a uniform code for their use, design, and color.

The bachelor’s gown, with its long, pointed sleeves, is worn closed. The master’s and doctor’s gowns, which may be worn open, are identical except for the length of their sleeves: the master’s gown has short sleeves, while the doctor’s gown has long sleeves. In addition, doctor’s gowns are faced with velvet and have three velvet chevrons on each sleeve. Most gowns are black, but some universities here as well as abroad use other colors: Yale University uses blue; Harvard University, crimson; and the University of London, scarlet.

Foreign universities often provide the most striking academic costumes, notable for their vibrant colors and unusual caps and hoods.

The academic hood is made of material similar to that used in the gown and is lined with silk in the official color of the institution that conferred the degree. The particular length, shape, and color of the hood also signify the degree. Some of the more familiar colors are white for arts and letters, taupe for business, scarlet for divinity, copper for economics, light blue for education, brown for the fine arts, lemon yellow for library science, pink for music, dark blue for philosophy, sage green for physical education, and gold for science.

The academic cap, most often in the Oxford mortarboard style, is constructed of black broadcloth, although the doctor’s cap may be of velvet. Tassels are different lengths, depending upon the degree; the doctor’s tassel is usually gold.

Graduate Exercises • Distinguished Guest Christopher M. O’Connor, FACHE • Chief Executive Officer, Yale New Haven Health System Recipient of Honorary Doctor of Science and Commencement Speaker

C

hristopher M. O’Connor is chief executive officer of Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS), Connecticut’s largest health system and a national leader in advanced clinical care. He oversees a network that includes more than 7,500 medical staff; 30,200 employees; and 2,600 hospital beds, delivering integrated care across more than 100 specialties in partnership with Yale School of Medicine.

Mr. O’Connor joined YNHHS in 2012 as executive vice president and chief operating officer. He was appointed president in 2020 and chief executive officer in 2022. Prior to joining YNHHS, he served as president and CEO of the Saint Raphael Healthcare System and the Hospital of Saint Raphael, leading the organization through its successful integration into Yale New Haven Hospital in 2012.

Since joining YNHHS, Mr. O’Connor has led a number of critical initiatives to advance the system’s strategic growth, including the successful affiliation of L+M Hospital and Westerly Hospital into YNHHS, and Milford Hospital into Bridgeport Hospital, as well as the expansion of the physician network through the integration of PriMed, the largest physician group to join the system. To improve service to patients and staff and increase efficiency, he also led efforts to systematize functions across YNHHS, from pharmacy to employee health, and oversaw the opening of the regional operations center (ROC) for supplies and services.

Mr. O’Connor holds a Master of Health Services Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in economics from George Washington University.

Graduate Exercises • Distinguished Guest Dr. Madeline Negrón • Superintendent of the New Haven Public Schools Commencement Speaker

D

r. Madeline Negrón is the superintendent of New Haven Public Schools, capping a distinguished 30-year career dedicated to Connecticut’s urban districts. A first-generation college graduate, Negrón’s leadership is deeply rooted in her personal journey as a multilingual learner who moved from Puerto Rico to Connecticut as a child — an experience that fuels her life’s passion for ensuring equity and excellence for every student.

Negrón’s extensive career spans every level of public education. She began as a bilingual teacher before transitioning into administration, serving as a teacher, principal, and director of instruction in New Haven.

Most recently, she served as a senior executive for Hartford Public Schools as chief of academics and acting

deputy superintendent. A recognized leader in Latino education policy, she is a co-founder and past president of the Connecticut Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (CALAS).

She holds a B.S. from Central Connecticut State University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. Negrón is also a member of the 2024– 2025 cohort of the Fellowship for Public Education Leadership at The Broad Center at the Yale School of Management. A former adjunct faculty member at Southern Connecticut State University, she is the proud parent of a soon-to-be SCSU graduate and remains a daily reminder of the transformative power of public education.
