Marissa Bode

• Actress and Disability Rights Activist Commencement Address

Marissa Bode made her feature film debut as Nessarose in Universal’s Wicked duology, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Yeoh. She is the first wheelchair user to portray Nessarose who is also a wheelchair user— marking a significant milestone in her advocacy for disability representation in Hollywood.

A lifelong performer, Bode began acting at the age of eight and trained at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. In addition to her work as an actress, she is a dedicated disability rights activist and serves as an ambassador for Saving Our Daughters, a nonprofit empowering young women from diverse backgrounds. She lives in Los Angeles, where she enjoys cooking and spending time with her three cats.

• 12th U.S. Secretary of Education

Recipient of Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and Commencement Speaker

Miguel A. Cardona is an American leader and educator. He served as the 12th United States Secretary of Education, a position he was nominated for by former President Joe Biden.

Throughout his 27-year career in education, Secretary Cardona has focused on improving educational access and equity, from his classroom of students as a fourth-grade teacher to the nation’s 65 million students as our Secretary of Education. The four pillars of his educational agenda included Academic Recovery and Excellence, Improving Conditions for Educators and Mental Health, Global Competitiveness, and College Affordability and Accessibility.

Cardona led the successful reopening of America’s schools after a pandemic, oversaw the efficient distribution of $190 billion to accelerate academic recovery and mental health support, and led unprecedented federal efforts to transform the country’s student loan system, which resulted in greater accountability in higher education and over $185 billion in debt relief to 5 million Americans.

Under Secretary Cardona’s leadership, the United States saw the greatest one-year growth in reading achievement for lower-performing students since 2009. It also increased from zero to 48 states initiating to pay student teachers while they learn through apprenticeships, an additional 16,000 school counselors and mental health experts, and over 1 million public servants earning debt relief.

Federal Student Aid (FSA) awarded Federal College Grants to 10% more students in 2024 compared to the previous year due to a transformational overhaul of FSA, the first in over 40 years. More students in America have affordable access to college and career pathways due to the efforts under Secretary Cardona’s leadership.

Prior to becoming U. S. Secretary of Education, Secretary Cardona served as the commissioner of education in Connecticut, district leader in Connecticut, university instructor, national awardwinning school principal and classroom teacher. Secretary Cardona’s approach to leadership at the local, state, federal and international levels has been grounded in intentional collaboration and lifted by a bold vision for improvement from pre-kindergarten through college to adult learning. His work has sought collaboration from local leaders, governors, philanthropists, entertainers and artists, industry executives, and international leaders.

A first-generation college student who celebrates bilingualism and biculturalism as a superpower, Secretary Cardona’s story embodies the American dream and the power of public education. Through an acknowledgment of how arts and culture have shaped his accession to the highest education position in the country, Secretary Cardona prides himself in staying true to his passion and values, from the barrio to the briefing room.

Academic Regalia

Most of the trappings that add color and drama to modern academic ceremonies date back to the Middle Ages, when universities dominated European intellectual life.

Originally a weapon, the university mace, for example, serves today as a ceremonial staff symbolizing the president’s authority to administer the university. Other symbols of authority include the president’s medallion and the batons.

Another vestige of the Middle Ages is the traditional academic costume — the cap, gown, and hood — which was originally the everyday apparel of the ecclesiastics who founded and controlled medieval universities. Later, even though the universities had passed from religious to lay control, faculty and students continued to wear the academic costume. The tradition of academic garb came to America by way of the British universities and has remained a vivid part of academic ritual since Colonial days.

For many years, each university determined the style and color of its own academic costume. Near the end of the nineteenth century, however, academic costumes became more common, and American

universities adopted a uniform code for their use, design, and color.

The bachelor’s gown, with its long, pointed sleeves, is worn closed. The master’s and doctor’s gowns, which may be worn open, are identical except for the length of their sleeves: the master’s gown has short sleeves, while the doctor’s gown has long sleeves. In addition, doctor’s gowns are faced with velvet and have three velvet chevrons on each sleeve. Most gowns are black, but some universities here as well as abroad use other colors: Yale University uses blue; Harvard University, crimson; and the University of London, scarlet. Foreign universities often provide the most striking academic costumes, notable for their vibrant colors and unusual caps and hoods.

The academic hood is made of material similar to that used in the gown and is lined with silk in the official color of the institution that conferred the degree. The particular length, shape, and color of the hood also signify the degree. Some of the more familiar colors are white for arts and letters, taupe for business, scarlet for divinity, copper for economics, light blue for education, brown for the fine arts, lemon yellow for library science, pink for music, dark blue for philosophy, sage green for physical education, and gold for science.

The academic cap, most often in the Oxford mortarboard style, is constructed of black broadcloth, although the doctor’s cap may be of velvet. Tassels are different lengths, depending upon the degree; the doctor’s tassel is usually gold.
