2009 Charitable Giving Report

Dear Friends, Connections made, relationships established and lives touched: these are Southern Connecticut State University stories.

The 2009-10 Southern Connecticut State University Foundation annual report celebrates these stories, as well as the centrality of the Southern experience to them. Taken together, the experience of connecting, relating and touching lives has driven the philanthropy of alumni and friends.

In thanksgiving for a life improved by a connection to Southern, each donor has honored that connection, and his or her academic heirs, by giving back to the institution that made a beginning possible or was able to be of service in some other important way. For example: • Anne Bianchi Gundersen, ’34, attended the New Haven Normal School to become a teacher. Having devoted more than 30 years to improving the lives of countless elementary school students, she chose to help fund the education of future teachers by establishing a scholarship.

• The Powers Family was so impressed by the care provided to a loved one by Southern nursing students and graduates that they established a scholarship to support men and women entering the medical field.

• Sandra Thielz, ’68, felt a former coach should be recognized for her life-changing influence on student athletes and initiated a scholarship for women gymnasts in her honor.

Guided by the university’s strategic plan, driven by the dedication and energy of our faculty, administrators, and staff and, most importantly, supported by alumni and

friends, we are very pleased to report that, despite difficult conditions, Southern has continued to provide both the resources and the opportunity for academic excellence that our students need to achieve success.

Donor rewards are intangible — scholarship recipients’ ability to complete a life-long dream, to contemplate a future filled with possibility, or to look ahead to the opportunity that comes to those who have worked hard and obtained a degree. However intangible to the donor, the benefits of this philanthropy are very real to our students and, ultimately, to our region and state.

The past year saw unprecedented economic turmoil in every sector, which seriously challenged the ability of both the university and the foundation to help as many students as possible find the financial means to stay in school. As part of our effort to financially support student success, we made a special appeal to our endowment donors, asking them to maintain the pre-crisis level of available scholarship and programmatic support. The aggregate response was overwhelmingly positive. In addition, the spring appeal brought in meaningful support for students struggling in these difficult times to pay their way through school.

With recent improvements in economic indicators, we look to the days ahead with cautious optimism. The economic environment notwithstanding, if Southern is to maintain its commitment to affordable, accessible education for all who choose to challenge themselves, we will need to continue to grow the support of Southern alumni and friends.

Teaching by Example

Having spent over three decades in the classroom, a dedicated former teacher provides vital support to Southern’s students — including the next generation of educators.

OPHOMORE MELISSA GENOVESE WORKS THREE JOBS to help pay her college expenses, so being named the recipient of the Anne Bianchi Gundersen Endowed Scholarship was a “tremendous relief,” she says.

But to Genovese, 19, an aspiring teacher, delight over receiving the scholarship extended far beyond the financial support.“It meant so much knowing that a person I hadn’t ever met would help me further my career,” she says.

When Genovese recently did get to meet donor Anne Bianchi Gundersen, ’34, at the President’s Donor Recognition Breakfast this fall, she was in awe. “She’s one of the sweetest women I’ve ever met,” Genovese says of Gundersen, 97, who was honored at the event for her philanthropy. “She’s an amazing woman . . . someone who puts everyone before herself. Words can’t express how much I will always be thankful to her.”

Though from different generations, the two women share similar aspirations — to change lives through education. With a goal of becoming a teacher, Gundersen attended the New Haven State Normal School — as Southern was then called — in the 1930s and taught for 32 years before retiring in 1972.

Her support of Southern and its students furthers her long-demonstrated commitment to education. The Anne Bianchi Gundersen Endowed Scholarship, established in 1995, provides financial assistance to students pursuing a degree in education. A $400,000 gift to the university will both bolster that fund and provide general support to the university’s initiatives and priorities. In total, Gundersen has gifted more than $500,000 to the university.

“Leadership gifts such as this ensure that Southern will continue to meet its commitment to provide an affordable, accessible education to those seeking to earn a college degree,” says President Cheryl J. Norton.

Although Gundersen and her late husband had no children of their own, she nurtured scores of youngsters during her teaching career.“Prepare, deliver, and inspire — I believe everyone can learn, with patience,” Gundersen says of her philosophy. “If you love them, you will be rewarded.”

Her own tenure as an educator provides a telling example. A member of the Class of 1934, Gundersen was among the first students to graduate with a four-year bachelor’s degree in education from the New Haven State Normal School. Before that, she graduated from the first three-year class in 1933.

Gundersen recalls campus as dramatically different from today, with her classes housed in a single small building. There were few extracurricular activities and no parties, and the big excitement on campus was if someone got married before he or she finished school, she says. She was a member of school clubs devoted to art, travel, geography, and science, as well as the Choral Art Society. “It was like one big family,” she recalls.

After graduation, Gundersen taught in Stratford, Conn., for seven years.

But when gas was rationed during World War II, she was unable to get to work, and ultimately left teaching temporarily to take a job at the railroad.

After the war she returned to the classroom — this time in New Haven, Conn., where she spent 25 years teaching, mostly at the Davis Street School.

Looking back, she still chuckles at how she envied a sixth-grade teacher across the hall from her who was a strict disciplinarian. “That room was always quiet,” Gundersen says with a smile. In contrast, her own classroom was lively and far from quiet — her students kept enthralled through hands-on activities like creating a smorgasbord when studying Sweden. Gundersen also spoke Italian and taught the non-native English speaking students, as well.

“I hope some day I can be half the teacher she was,” Genovese says.“She was so dedicated.”

Today, Genovese is well on her way to following the admirable example set by her mentor. Genovese, who is majoring in elementary/special education and English, says she chose Southern for its small class sizes and the fine reputation of its education program.

She decided to become a teacher after working with children as a summer camp counselor. Her interest in special education developed, in part, through her involvement in a high school training initiative that paired her with two boys in a special education program.

“It was so rewarding to see how the students progressed through the year,” says Genovese.

In an essay she completed to apply for the scholarship, Genovese wrote about how she developed a special connection at the summer camp with a 9-year-old boy who was living in his third foster care home. He was often upset and Genovese was the only counselor to whom he would open up. The boy ultimately was adopted by his foster family and Genovese received a thank you letter from his family for having changed his whole attitude.

“She’ll make a good teacher,” says Gundersen, clearly pleased that her lifelong commitment to education is continuing to reap the fullest rewards.

But the couple’s fairytale marriage ended tragically and much too soon: Joann died in 2006, at the age of 50, after a 15-month battle with ovarian cancer.

To honor Joann’s memory, her husband and son, along with Joann’s brother, Ernest Criscuolo, ’84, established the Joann C. Powers Memorial Fund at Southern.

The scholarship provides critically needed support to students in the School of Health and Human Services, with a focus on those majoring in nursing.

In addition to serving as a tribute to Joann, the gift was made in gratitude for the excellent care she received from nurses and nursing students during her battle.

Many were from Southern, where nursing is one of the strongest undergraduate majors.

“We had one young woman in particular, Megan McMahon, who became very close with my wife,” says Dennis. “She and the nurses who had gone to Southern were very inspiring. We decided we wanted to set up a fund to support men and women who were going into the medical field.”

Funding for the scholarship came from the Joann C. Powers Memorial Foundation, which the three men started three years ago to help fight ovarian cancer.

For Criscuolo, an alumnus of the School of Business, the Southern connection is particularly poignant. He is proud of the excellent care Joann received from fellow Southern alumni and students.

Compassionate Care A family honors a lost loved one and gives thanks for the care she received by establishing a scholarship for students pursuing careers in health care.

ITH THE UNITED STATES in the midst of a growing nursing shortage, the education of future nurses has taken on heightened importance — a fact brought to life when a loved one is critically ill. Such was the case for the Powers family.

Dennis and Joann Powers grew up on the same street in New Haven, Conn., and began dating in their early teens. The high school sweethearts were married in 1976 when he was 21 and she was 20, and two years later opened an apparel business, happily working side-by-side while raising their son, Dennis Jr.

Nursing major Joshua Hajjar, the current recipient of the Joann C. Powers Memorial Fund scholarship, is already living up to their admirable standards. Currently employed by Stamford Hospital, the hard-working father of three has completed clinical placements at numerous health care settings, among them, Yale Psychiatric Institute, Milford Hospital, and Danbury Public Schools.

Hajjar was drawn to the nursing profession after working at a local hospital. “The nurses I met were knowledgeable, affable, and altruistic,” he says of his decision to return to college as an adult to complete his degree.

“The burden of debt that comes from obtaining an education today can be overwhelming,” says Hajjar.

“The funds received from this scholarship do a great deal to reduce that strain. . . . This scholarship has renewed my faith in second chances.”

gymnastics. Among her many achievements are competing on the U.S. national training squad in 1967 and 1968, and serving as a judge at the Olympic Games in 1996. Like her mentor, she also went on to coach champions. Thielz served as a faculty member and the women’s gymnastics coach at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, and coached Team USA at the World University Games in Bucharest, Romania.

In recognition of her former coach’s lifechanging influence, Thielz has initiated the Muriel Davis Grossfeld Endowed Gymnastics Scholarship.

Other alumni also have generously contributed to the fund, which, when fully endowed, will support members of the women’s gymnastics team.

The scholarship is an appropriate tribute to Grossfeld, a pioneer in the sport of women’s gymnastics who was cited by Sports Illustrated in its list of the top 50 greatest sports figures of the 20th century from each state — in her case, Indiana.

Among Grossfeld’s accomplishments? Winning 18 national titles, competing on three Olympic Teams, coaching two Olympic Teams — and scoring the first perfect 10.00 in the United States at the 1964 Olympic Games trials.

The founder of a highly respected school for women gymnasts, she trained over 75 national champions — and counts among her former

Championship Spirit A nationally acclaimed gymnastics coach honors her legendary mentor by initiating a scholarship for Southern’s student athletes.

ANDRA J. THIELZ, ’68, came to Southern in 1964 from her Maryland hometown because of one person — gymnastics coach Muriel Davis Grossfeld. Thielz wanted to be a gymnast, and Grossfeld was one of a very few women’s gymnastics coaches in the country at that time — serving as the volunteer coach of what was then Southern’s women’s gymnastics club.

“I owe my entire professional life to Muriel,” says Thielz.“If she hadn’t agreed to coach me, I never would have had the opportunities that I had.”

Those opportunities took Thielz to the pinnacle of the world of

students Patricia Panichas, ’74, M.S. ’78, 6th Yr. ’85, who coached Southern’s women’s gymnastics team for 28 years and was the only U.S. judge selected to participate in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Today, Southern continues to do Grossfeld proud. The Owls have dominated Division II of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), having won nine of the last 12 annual championship meets.

“Southern Connecticut State University opened its doors to women athletes and promoted women’s sports at a time when few institutions did so. Many of these athletes have gone on to be major players at the national and international levels,” Grossfeld says.

“I hope people will reciprocate by providing support for the teams of the future. Southern’s student athletes deserve this scholarship help.”

UNDRAISING AND FINANCIAL

In spite of difficult economic times, fundraising for the 2008-2009 fiscal year held steady.

Our constituents responded generously to the needs of Southern students, contributing close to $1.84 million in new gifts and commitments. The distribution of these gift and pledge dollars also remained consistent, with 70% directed to programmatic support, 19% designated for endowed funds, and the remaining 11% for the university’s highest priorities.

During the unprecedented period of volatility of the financial markets in early 2009, the market value of Southern’s

endowment was sustained, closing the fiscal year at $9.4 million.

The Southern Connecticut State University Foundation’s assets totaled $11.7 million at year end. Although this represents a drop of 13.5% from the prior year — the result of the severe economic downturn experienced during this time — there was also good news. The foundation provided a record level of scholarship and programmatic support to the university and its students — $961 thousand compared with $652 thousand for the prior year, an increase of over 47%.

Looking Ahead The financial markets have shown a significant increase through the first two quarters of fiscal year 2010 and the board is optimistic that this trend will continue, allowing for greater levels of support. Increasing the resources available for scholarships remains

a priority for the university and the foundation, as well as generating programmatic support and funding for new initiatives. Through the continuing generosity of alumni and friends, these objectives will be met.

Board Notes The Foundation Board was expanded once again, with the addition of the following new members: • Michael Chambrello, ’79, is the president and chief executive officer of Scientific Games Corporation in New York City. Scientific Games is a global technology leader and provider of comprehensive gaming solutions to the lottery and pari-mutuel racing industries.

Previously, Chambrello was president and chief executive officer of Environmental Systems Products Holdings, Inc. (ESP) and chief executive officer of Transmedia Asia Pacific, Inc. and Transmedia Europe Inc. Chambrello earned a B.S. in economics from Southern and attended graduate school at the American University's Kogod College of Business.

• Carlton Highsmith is the founder of Specialized Packaging Group (SPG) in Hamden, Conn. In 2009, Highsmith merged SPG with PaperWorks Industries to form the third-largest integrated recycled paperboard packaging company in North America. He assumed the position of vice chairman of the board of the merged company, SPG PaperWorks Inc. Highsmith received a B.A. in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

• Thomas J. Madigan, ’98, is a vice president of investments for UBS Financial Services, and a managing partner of the Lelas/Madigan/Curtis Investment Group in New Haven, Conn.

Madigan specializes in wealth management for high-net worth individuals and also manages pension plans, 401k plans, and corporate assets. He received a bachelor’s degree from SCSU in business management and is currently working toward an M.B.A. at the university.

• Dr. Marc A. Nivet, ’92, is the chief operating officer and treasurer of the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation. Nivet concurrently serves as special assistant to the senior vice president of health at New York University (NYU) and holds faculty appointments at the NYU Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and at Hofstra University. As of press time, Nivet was slated to join the Association of American Medical Colleges as chief diversity officer this spring.

Nivet received a B.S. in communication studies from SCSU, an M.S. in higher education/student development from Long Island University, C.W. Post campus, and an Ed.D. in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania.

• Anthony Verlezza, ’74, recently retired from the position of vice president of supply chain, Unilever, North American Ice Cream Group. Unilever’s North American Ice Cream Group is the world’s largest manufacturer and marketer of ice cream products. Prior to his employment at Unilever, Verlezza held positions with Borden Co. and Kraft, Inc. A native of West Haven, Conn., he graduated from SCSU with a B.S. degree in biology and later earned an M.B.A. in management from LaSalle University. In 2005, Verlezza was the recipient of Southern’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.
