FAITH FORMATION

EDITORIAL Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa – warm greetings to you all.

hen I think about my faith journey, I can see that God was quietly at work through many people. One worked for Scripture Union and helped me see that following Jesus was about more than simply being a ‘good’ person. Who helped you discover Jesus? For many of us, there is no single moment that explains our faith. Our stories are woven through conversations, relationships, and small acts of faithfulness. A question answered. A Bible opened. An invitation accepted. A friendship that pointed us towards Christ. Some of us came to faith gradually, others experienced a clear turning point. Behind every story is God drawing people closer through love and grace. A campfire conversation. A leader who remembered your name. A prayer spoken at just the right time. Here at Scripture Union, we have been listening to the faith stories of young people across Aotearoa. As we listened, we found ourselves asking: how might God use us to help others discover Jesus today? This issue of Adventure explores what we learned and offers practical insights for evangelism and discipleship in Aotearoa. As you read, I encourage you to pray, reflect, and consider how God might be calling you to respond. Ngā mihi nui,

Evangelism

ometimes Christians have spoken about evangelism as though it depends on our programmes, methods, or ability to persuade. Yet Scripture tells a different story. Before anyone seeks God, God is already seeking them. Before a person begins asking questions about faith, the Holy Spirit is already at work. As Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 3.6, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.” Recognising who is doing the primary work has profound implications for how we understand our role. We are not bringing God to people. We are helping people recognise the God who is already present, already active, and already drawing them to himself. Growth and transformation belong to God.

AS YOUNG PEOPLE SHARED THEIR FAITH STORIES, IT BECAME CLEAR THAT COMING TO FAITH WAS SELDOM STRAIGHTFORWARD

Recent research conducted by Scripture Union among young people reinforces this truth. As young people shared their faith stories, it became clear that coming to faith was seldom straightforward. Their journeys were shaped by relationships, questions, conversations, experiences, insights, and encounters with God’s grace. What was striking was how spiritually open many of them were. They were asking profound questions about meaning, identity, purpose, hope, and belonging. At the same time, many had little understanding of Christianity. As we listened to these different stories, a consistent pattern emerged evoking imagery of how a braided river moves through many pathways. The channels separate, reconnect, disappear, and re-emerge, yet together form one living river. It is a fitting image for Aotearoa New Zealand, where braided rivers are such a distinctive part of our landscape. Faith journeys are much the same. People rarely come to faith through a single conversation or event. More often, ISSUE 3 | 2026 3

God works through multiple encounters and influences over time. As we reflected on these stories, five recurring pathways became clear, through which God’s grace seemed to flow.

Encounter. People need more than

information about God. They need opportunities to encounter Jesus for themselves. Our task is not to manufacture spiritual experiences but to create space where people can recognise God’s presence and activity.

Relationship. Every significant faith

story included someone who cared, listened, encouraged, and walked alongside them. Relationship is not simply a strategy for evangelism. It reflects the way God himself relates to people.

Invitation. Jesus frequently invited

people with simple words: “Come and see.” Authentic evangelism finds a path between silence and pressure. It creates opportunities for people to respond without coercion or manipulation, while still clearly and confidently sharing the good news of Jesus.

Journey. Faith develops over time. In a culture that values immediate results, God’s work is often slower, quieter, and deeper than we expect. Rather than asking, “Will this person become a Christian today?” a better question is, “What step is God inviting them to take next?”

4 www.sunz.org.nz

GOD WORKS THROUGH MULTIPLE ENCOUNTERS AND INFLUENCES OVER TIME Dignity. Every person bears the image of God. They are not projects, statistics, or evangelistic outcomes, but people with stories, questions, hopes, and struggles. Genuine evangelism honours that dignity.

Like a braided river crossing the land of Aotearoa, God’s grace flows through all these channels. Our role is not to direct the river. Our privilege is to help keep its pathways open, trusting that the God who begins the work of transformation will also bring it to completion. In the end, evangelism is about faithfully participating in what God is already doing. It is about journeying alongside young people as they encounter Jesus, follow Him, and experience the transforming life that only He can give.

Over the years, Scripture Union has been a real encouragement to me as I have served in children’s ministry. Their commitment to give each child opportunities to encounter Jesus, engage with Scripture and encourage those on the discipleship journey with children is so valuable. The recent Kia Tipu training emphasised the importance of creating space and providing opportunities for our children to encounter Jesus for themselves as they begin their own journey of following Him. I really appreciated the opening session. It gave me time to pause, reflect and consider my own response to who Jesus is. Thank you for such a valuable and refreshing day!

Owen started reading Scripture Union Bible reading notes at age 10 when he gave his heart to God. He enjoyed church camps and was involved in a Wellsford church youth group of over 100. Sadly, many fell away from faith as they got caught up in business and lifestyle. People treat Christianity “like a microwave today” we want things and answers instantly, but faith is a lifetime commitment to win the prize. “We live in this world, but we do not have to be like this world.” Philippians 3.14 (NIV) I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Beyond Experience (BE) has helped form my faith by providing the opportunity to meet so many faithful leaders who use their strengths differently. Doing strengths testing and receiving coaching reinforced how valuable it is to have varied strengths, and to lean into my own. I connected dots between things I’m good at and the way that I lead. I’ve also appreciated the intentionality behind BE, the accountability it provides through having a Kaiārahi, and different content to work through each month. Developing leadership and growing faith can feel a little all over the place, which is why I’ve enjoyed the consistency, measurable goals and structure of the BE programme.

SU camps have been a big part of my faith journey especially through Exodus Prime. It really encouraged me to be surrounded by such awesome people who were living like me but were also wonderfully themselves. EP challenged me to take steps in my faith and provided a safe space for me to do this with the encouragement and guidance from campers and leaders. Attending EP kickstarted an unending growth spurt in my faith as Jesus has captivated me more each day. The five days of camp were filled with inspiring talks, worship and prayer that strengthened me to become a braver follower of Christ and helped confirm my identity as a child of God. I would encourage anyone wanting more for their faith to go and experience for themselves the joy of taking those steps with like-minded people.

hen Yeshua stood before his disciples on the Mount of Olives, he told them to “go and make disciples.”—Matthew 28.19 Within those words is a ministry that goes beyond evangelism and demands resources and time for relationship and discipleship.

The journey to the decision to follow Christ is a critical part in a young person’s ongoing journey of faith, and if you are sharing the good news with a young person, you need to be prepared to journey with them as they learn to be a follower of Jesus. This is backed up by the Your Story research which showed that young people’s faith journeys are heavily affected by the presence of significant adults in their journey. The Your Story research noted that for a young person on a faith journey it was all about relationships. A.B.O.U.T. is a helpful acronym for the framework that defines the relational ministry our young people are looking for, starting with Acceptance for who they are. They were also looking for an environment that created a place of Belonging for them, where they know they are accepted and loved. They needed adults who gave them the space and 10 www.sunz.org.nz

ability to take Ownership of their own faith journey; adults who gave support by being alongside and provided more only when asked. One of the key lessons from the research in relation to evangelism and making a disciple of a young person is the concept of Understanding. It was important to young people that adults with mature faith were actively working at understanding who the young person is as an individual. With the evangelism of a young person and with anyone, Trust is a huge part of the relationship. Trust allows all the other parts to grow, trust allows forgiveness to be shared, and trust can be a pivotal moment for a young person making the choice to believe in the love that God has for them.

IF YOU ARE SHARING THE GOOD NEWS WITH A YOUNG PERSON, YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED TO JOURNEY WITH THEM...

The Your Story research showed that we are an important part of a young person’s story. It also showed us that they are in charge of the narrative and decide how we are perceived in that narrative. When we are involved in evangelism of young people, we need to remind ourselves we are the hands and feet of Jesus, and we are their experience of Christ in every day.

...WE ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF A YOUNG PERSON'S STORY The invitation from Jesus is all about love, are our evangelistic strategies all about love? Christ was all about the person in front of him, are we all about the young person in front of us? Let us be all A.B.O.U.T. them and create a loving, caring community for them to belong to as they journey towards faith and beyond. ur SUNZ mission is to support churches to help children and young people discover and follow Jesus and serve the world around them. Awareness and engagement with this range from those who do not really know what we do, to churches who are diehard supporters of SUNZ, and everything in between. Cromwell Presbyterian is a church example of a strong relationship with SUNZ. This is part of their story woven into the fabric of SUNZ mission.

Moore (former SUNZ Youth Consultant based in Invercargill). In 2020, ‘The Three Aunties’ as we referred to ourselves, reached out for ideas to consolidate a small group of 6-8 youth who met weekly. Lizzie visited and we talked over coffee. This was encouraging and reassuring as we quickly realised that SUNZ had experienced youth consultants who were willing to travel to Cromwell to support us.

Trish Cromwell Presbyterian Youth (CPY) came to engage with SUNZ in my time as youth leader through Lizzie

The following year we sent off our first two youth to Exodus Prime (EP) young leadership training camp. These young women returned home with new focus and confidence to follow Jesus and reach out to others. EP brought the

12 www.sunz.org.nz

youth group together, with parents and community, to organise a fundraising car wash to help pay travel costs to the January camp. This led to us all feeling a part of EP. These young women shared their enthusiasm with the whole church when they returned from the camp and had much greater confidence serving in roles with youth and kids church. Exodus Prime has been instrumental in youth taking their faith to a deeper level. (See page 8 for info on EP 2027) Anamata youth leader training is a great event. SUNZ provide workshops and speakers who inspire and inform us in best practice; code of conduct for youth workers, how to meet the needs of neurodiverse youth, inductive and multisensory meditation on scriptures (see sunz. org.nz/youth/anamata for more on this programme). This has helped us involve youth in our planning and decisionmaking. We’ve been able to provide them with more leadership opportunities by releasing them to run special events such as an excellent ‘Amazing Race’ youth night. Some have also been junior leaders at holiday programmes and camps. This has developed them personally to step out in faith and dig into the Word. We have valued the ability to reach out to a youth consultant for a listening ear or hot tips. Larissa has been a great resource person. As older youth workers we were keen to avoid being old fashioned. However, we gained confidence to use the Bible front and centre in youth ministry and

make sword drill and memory verse learning fun and engaging. A CPY young person My faith and life with Jesus have grown by stepping forward and making it my own. With the noises and distractions of life, it’s very easy to lose focus of what is important. It has been encouraging and helpful to walk my journey with other believers. Through reading scriptures and spending time with God, I’ve learnt how important it is to help and serve those around me. SUNZ has provided opportunities for this through leadership camps and being able to lead on SUPAkidz camps. SUNZ has enabled and helped me to put my faith into action at my own church, by getting involved with kids’ ministry, organising youth events, helping at youth group, and encouraging those around me. I continuously try to live like Jesus by ‘loving my neighbour as myself’. Being involved with SUNZ has provided me with skills, ideas, courage, and growth in my faith. I loved going on camps with other young people to explore and grow in our Christian faith together. Find out how SUNZ Youth Team can help your church sunz.org.nz/youthconsultancy

s a teenager on a camp, I tried waterskiing for the first time. It was not a successful endeavour. I ended up mostly floating adrift in the cold lake, waterlogged, and unhappy. Reflecting on my hapless situation reminds me of the account in John 21, of Jesus’ disciples going fishing after His death and resurrection. They were confused, adrift, aimless, and feeling cripplingly guilty and ashamed for abandoning their Master. It was in this state that Jesus invited them to camp out on the beach with Him. It was here around the campfire that the disciples discovered Jesus’ love, compassion, and call to service. They were encouraged to keep following Him and were given their mandate to serve Him. It was a turning point. Fast forward over 2000 years and children and young people are experiencing feelings of disconnection from God, adrift in their lives, living with guilt and anxiety, and a sense of

hopelessness. Yet around the literal and metaphorical campfires of authentic Christian community that SUNZ camps offer, some children and young people are meeting Jesus for the first time. Some are restoring long-fractured relationships with God, while others are making renewed commitments to serve Him wholeheartedly. This is happening through exploring God’s Word together, learning to pray, listen, reflect, and ask questions in a safe environment. This happens while seeing faith lived out in love by the leaders around them. This happens because God’s Spirit is at work. Please pray with us that God will continue to use SUNZ camps to get our children and young people out of drifting in unhappy waters and up and enjoying an exhilarating life with and for Jesus.

COME AND FOLLOW ME MARK 1:14-20

t has always struck me how willing these four men were to leave their fishing nets and follow this strange preacher who proclaims the coming of the kingdom of God, the urgent need for repentance and that His listeners should believe this good news. These men descended from a long line of fishermen; over generations this trade would be handed down. Fishing was what they knew how to do, and when the times were tough, they would just work harder. However, Jesus was calling them into something new. The old ways did not suffice anymore. Israel needed to turn away from their traditions that undermined the Torah and their political ambitions that would drive them into ruin. They couldn’t just follow them a bit harder. They needed to repent and believe (verse 15).

16 www.sunz.org.nz

Jesus is proclaiming the good news – evangelion. This Greek word was to announce military victories or a royal birth. From the Philistines victory over Saul to Pompey’s allies’ presumptuous declaration of victory against Caesar, evangelion is co-opted by Mark to speak of the birth of the real God and the victory He has won over the powers of darkness. The disciples were called in verse 17, “Come, Follow Me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” Jesus promises divine victory and the establishment of the kingdom of God here on earth. We, as disciples of Christ, are called into this same ministry. To join Jesus. To urge repentance and proclaim the good news of the death, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. Leaving behind our old ways and moving into true Jesus following.

was born and lived in Herne, a city in the northwest of Germany until I finished school and travelled to Aotearoa. I was not raised in a Christian household, but at age 13 it was time to attend a confirmation course at our local protestant church. It is customary to receive monetary gifts for getting confirmed. I came for the money but ended up joining the church community for friendship and acceptance. In Year 9, my Latin class went to Rome and visited the Vatican, where Pope Francis was presiding over mass. During the eucharist I had a profound moment of head to heart. After kneeling for ages, the pain left me and I felt like I was floating. There was only God and me. The ten thousand other believers around me were gone and I realised that this God I had been hearing

and learning about is real and is calling me to relationship and service. When I arrived in Aotearoa, I was warmly welcomed by Karori Anglican. I was only supposed to be here for a year, but the church invited me to stay. So, for the last four years, I have been working as the Youth Pastor at Karori Anglican, urging repentance, and proclaiming the good news of the death, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. I left behind my old ways and moved closer to true Jesus following. A good part of that has been my leadership development and mentoring through Scripture Union’s Beyond Experience programme over the last two years. Ben is Beyond Experience Tuarua (second year)
