HANDS OF MERCY LYRICS

Verse:

In the eyes of the orphans and the widows

We are the picture of the only love they’ll know

With tenderness and patience

We’re called to love, serve, and let them know

That God loves them, yes He sees them

He defends the cause of the poor, ohhhh

A father to the fatherless

He’ll use us to provide for their needs for sure

Chorus:

Hands of mercy reaching out

To the poorest of the poor

Healing the wounds of the broken

Eyes of mercy looking out

Being a shelter in times of need

With so many hungry mouths to feed

The least that we do for these

Yes the least that we do for these

The least that we do for these

Is precious is in His sight

Chorus:

Hands of mercy reaching out

To the poorest of the poor

Healing the wounds of the broken

Eyes of mercy looking out

Being a shelter in times of need

With so many hungry mouths to feed

The least that we do for these

Yes the least that we do for these

The least that we do for these

Is precious in His sight

In His sight

Spotlight Interview

Youth's Director & Children's Author www.lisaglory.com

Interviewer:

Nadine N. Edwards

Interviewer:

Can you share with our readers a bit about your journey into servant leadership and advocacy in Jamaica?

Nadine:

My journey into servant leadership and advocacy in Jamaica began as a teenager when I first encountered the love of God at my very first VBS (Vacation Bible School). It was a taste of Christ's passion—a moment that ignited a deep thirst for God within my soul. This experience has guided me to where I am today in servitude.

During my teenage years, I was profoundly impacted by VBS and my church community, much like how I now impact youths. This snippet represents my empowerment journey into servitude.

What inspired you to become involved in outreach advocacy for the poor, widows, and students in your communities?

Nadine:

My inspiration to become involved in outreach advocacy for the poor, widows, and students in my communities stems from my love for God and my desire to please Him. The zeal of the Lord has consumed me, as stated in John 14:15, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." I believe that loving God means obeying Him, and He commanded us to take care of the poor, widows, and orphans. By doing so, I have become a doer of the word of God, not just a mere hearer (James 1:22). Pleasing God in this way brings me fulfillment and strengthens my resolve to do more, especially as I witness and participate in the transformation of many lives through these efforts. It is truly a blessing.

22

Interviewer:

Could you highlight some of the challenges you've encountered in your duties, and how you've overcome them?

Nadine:

Two of the major challenges that I have encountered in my duties and how I have overcome them are the lack of resources and support. Regarding the needs of the youth ministry in which I serve, the church faces challenges in the areas of financial resources and administrative support, often resulting in strain on the youth department and its leaders. To address these difficulties, we as leaders often use our own resources, create fundraisers, and seek sponsorship. Additionally, we involve our young people in the process to get things done. This is how I have been managing these challenges in my duties.

Interviewer:

How do you prioritize your efforts among the various organizations and initiatives you're involved with?

Nadine:

As a foundational basis for prioritization, strong intimacy with God and strong family relations are key to effective ministry decision-making. Therefore, in prioritizing my efforts among the various organizations and initiatives I am involved with, I rely on several guiding principles. These include my obligated and delegated responsibilities, objectives, impact, and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

For example, my first priority is to carry out my daily duties as a called and ordained youth leader in my church, as a service to God. Impacting the lives of the youths in my care is a top priority. Secondly, my responsibility to serve in this leadership capacity and connect with various organizations and initiatives is aligned with long and short-term goals (objectives) and guided by the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

Hence, as a result of laying out the foundation of these guidelines with the direction of the Holy Spirit everything else falls into place according to God’s will.

23
Teaching is very important in the process of any form of development or transformation.
The Bible records in 2 Chronicles 15:3, “For many years Israel has been without a true God and a teaching priest.''

Interviewer:

What specific projects or initiatives have you found to be most impactful in addressing the needs of the underprivileged in Jamaica?

Nadine:

Currently serving as a youth leader alongside my husband at Maranatha Christian Church, located in Waterhouse, one of the largest inner-city communities in Jamaica, has provided me with a platform to create impactful programs within the youth fellowship. These programs address the needs of the underprivileged in Jamaica, facilitated by direct contact with the community, parents, and children. Through youth fellowship, we have gained insight into the reality of prevalent issues such as low self-esteem, lack of self-worth, and a poor value system. This understanding enables us to tailor conferences and workshops that include participation from professionals such as the National Council for Drug Abuse and representatives from the Jamaica AIDS Support Group, among others. These initiatives aim to educate and empower individuals to value themselves, make better choices, and build relationships and character for progress, future advancements, and transformation.

24

Interviewer:

As a youth director, how do you engage and motivate young people to become active participants in community service?

Nadine:

As a youth director, I engage and motivate young people to become active participants in community service through personal and corporate relational meetings aimed at building rapport. Understanding their interests is crucial when motivating young people. Therefore, the information gathered from these rapport-building sessions is used to create activities that pique their interest. Consequently, they are motivated and willingly participate because their interests are sparked, and they are engaged in activities they love.

Interviewer:

What one talent or skill you use to support your mission?

Nadine:

One of my major skills that I use to support my mission is the gift of teaching. Teaching is very important in the process of any form of development or transformation. The Bible records in 2 Chronicles 15:3, “For many years Israel has been without a true God and a teaching priest.”

Interviewer:

What role do you believe education plays in breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering marginalized communities?

Nadine:

I believe that education is an illuminator which plays a very important role in breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering marginalized communities. The reason education is crucially important as the role of an illuminator is because of its ability to enlighten and upgrade the individual mindset, which is the bedrock for understanding and future development.

Interviewer:

Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations for the future of your advocacy work and community involvement in Jamaica?

Nadine:

Looking ahead, my goals and aspirations for the future of my advocacy work and community involvement in Jamaica are, first, to strengthen the stakes of what is already built through my servitude. Secondly, I aim to focus on raising up more individuals who share a similar mindset through training and impartation in settings such as boot camps, seminars, and workshops. Thirdly, I intend to concentrate on another passionate area of my calling, which is prayer. Thanks.

Reflections

Lessons Learned from Serving Others

Tracey Nosakhare reflects on the lessons learned throughout her journey of serving God and others. She candidly discusses her mistakes, obstacles, and the enduring truths that have shaped her life.

Ihave walked a path of serving wholeheartedly for as long as I can remember. Along the way, I've encountered many individuals seemingly headed in the same direction: the faithful servant, the over-pleaser, and the murmurer. Despite the challenge of discerning the differences, I've strived to grasp my purpose.

At times, I too succumbed to the allure of over-pleasing, until it began to feel like I was seeking acceptance through my actions. I deceived myself into believing it was genuine service, but eventually, exhaustion set in as I realized I was relying on my own strength rather than God's.

Then, I found myself murmuring, complaining about life's trials without reflecting on past victories. I became consumed by my own desires, blurring the lines between God's will and my personal needs, attempting to take matters into my own hands. However, I was reminded of the Israelites who grumbled about their circumstances despite God's continuous protection and provision.

38

Serving molds character.

It isn't a means to exploit others.

The

error

is to lose sight of God.

It's easy to lose sight of the blessings amidst trials when we're fixated on our desires. Yet, to become leaders, we must first embrace servanthood. Servants don't choose their tasks; their master does. They don't dictate their rest; their master does. To lead effectively, one must first serve. (Matt. 20:26)

Serving molds character, yielding patience, love, humility, and generosity. It isn't

a means to exploit others. Like Joseph, serving may lead to betrayal or bondage, testing our loyalty to God. Thus, understanding the essence of true servanthood is paramount.

We are all called to be faithful servants, offering genuine sacrifice to God, not driven by deceit or people-pleasing. As bondservants of Christ, we fulfill our duty on Earth, knowing our service is a living sacrifice. Serving God with pure hearts, we seek the Crown of Righteousness.

KNOX TOLBERT

Growing up in a family where both parents struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction, Donel Wheeler, known by his pen name Knox Tolbert, faced significant challenges. However, with the support of his therapist and grandmother, he fought to maintain his focus.

His first book, "Unwanted," was drawn from his journal entries at the age of nine, documenting the abuse and bullying he endured from his father. Later, he penned "Wanted," his second release, to illustrate how he overcame these adversities. De-

termined to break the cycle, he consciously chose a path divergent from that of his parents. He generously donated copies of his books to the Thiel College Library in Pennsylvania.

Today, Knox's books aim to inspire other children, showing them that regardless of their upbringing, they have the potential to achieve their dreams.

Tragically, on March 2, 2024, Knox's life was cut short in a devastating car accident.

He accomplished everything he set out to do since the age of 13, reaching his goals and dedicating himself to helping others without judgment until his passing. Universally respected, he always prioritized the needs of others, even strangers. He possessed an old soul, radiating kindness and compassion.

As the one who raised him and witnessed his transformation into a remarkable young man, I am devastated. Now, he serves as my guardian angel, watching

over not only me but also anyone in need.

Despite my grief, I am faced with practical challenges, such as the lack of life insurance and the absence of support from his biological parents. Nonetheless, I fulfilled every role for him, serving as both grandmother and mother.

His life ended far too soon, leaving a profound void in our hearts.
