Identity

Caroline Mubiru Am I The person people need me to be Sister Daughter Friend Am I The person I want to be Helpful Attentive Loving Or am I Too busy bottling up my feelings to the point where I can’t even figure out what I am.

I try my best to recognize myself To showcase who I am But how to demonstrate something so pervasive How to express the pit of nothing that rises as I question Who am I? There are 2 I’s in identity And I just wonder which I am I.

Photo Collage 18 x 38 cm This artwork suggests the struggle to be perceived as a whole, and the incoherence of thought that arises in the minds of those dealing with their mental health or self-image. Its dual nature implies not only a fractured self-image, but a fractured identity, as we often find it difficult to define ourselves when we do not see the full picture.

Acrylic and Ink on Paper 18 x 25 cm This is the story of the deterioration of beauty with time, and the base nature that lies within all women. In essence, beauty is fleeting, and is inevitably reduced to the same marks of old age, no matter how we may try to hinder the process. The media has a tendency to minimize the portraits of women to images of perfection–a standard which invariably dispels “outsiders,” but it is important to remember that the mask we choose to wear says little about our true character.

Grace Street Crip is what Gabriel considers as his Tio. He struggles with his identity of being the hard man defined by sex and machismo, when in reality, he is not confident in his own gender.

Mike and Jake Gabriel Andrade

Micron Ink on Paper 11”x17” This work depicts Gabriel’s uncle with someone who Gabriel was told was simply his uncle’s roommate when he was younger. However, he later found out how in love and deeply connected they were.

Colors of Ecuador Gabriel Andrade

Ink and Spray Paint on Wood 9”x9” This piece is an exploration of the factors that shape Gabriel’s identity, since he is from both Ecuador and the West of Orange, New Jersey. This piece of graffiti art pays homage to the art of Oswaldo Gyuasamin, who believes his art expresses his ardent support for communism.

In her art class, Claire took multiple self portraits and played with the lighting until there was a unique enough picture that had various lines and shapes coming from the light. After being asked to highlight a portion of their face, and then cut off the drawing somewhere on the face, Claire chose her mouth to be that point.

Bad Bones Nicholas Milkovich

Plaster and Steel 6”x2”x1” This plaster sculpture is modeled after Nicholas’s chest, arms, and hands, with the plaster pieces reinforced and painted. The pieces are connected with zinc-plated chain. No chain is permanently fixed, allowing for variation in placement and length depending on the installation site. This piece is considered very personal, as it is his likeness that is hanging on the walls. “It isn’t until you are looking at yourself, not just in the mirror, that you see how others might see you”.

Artist Bios: Caroline Mubiru (Class of 2020)

Caroline is a media studies major. She has been writing poetry for some time as a form of journaling rather than directly fleshing out her daily experiences. Whenever she feels intense emotions, whether it’s turmoil or joy, she writes a poem. This is the first time she is sharing her work with other people, and she hopes it helps anyone feel less pressure to try to lock down their identity. The beauty of identities is that they are constantly shifting in directions that we didn’t know were possible, so she hopes that people see this poem as a “You’re not alone! I’m lost, too” situation and grow to be okay with not having concrete answers to things (because where’s the fun in that?).

Caitlin Taphorn (Class of 2021)

Catie is a first year at UVA who is currently undecided on a major. She lives in Fairfax, Virginia, although being a military brat has allowed her to live in a variety of places, ranging from Kansas, to Colorado, to Lille, France. At the moment, she is not enrolled in any studio art classes, but has always been involved in art throughout her high school career, and has held a passion for feminine portraiture. In her eyes, no object has quite as much of a story to tell as the human face does, and by manipulating the formal qualities by which artists paint people, they have the capacity of altering their stories.

Gabriel Andrade (Class of 2021)

Gabriel is an architectural student who was born in Manabi Puerto Viejo but grew up West of Orange, New Jersey. He classifies himself as a designer by practice, but an artist by life. He believes that it is through the pen of art that he is able to explore his life and reality, as well as the implications it has, by examining things outside of academia through his own feelings and interactions in life. He enjoys letting things connect within a system, whether it’s how things contextualize to one another, or representing them through the singular line that makes up the narrative of his life and drawings.

Claire Janek (Class of 2020)

Claire is a Kinesiology major. She spends most of her time playing field hockey and doing outdoorsy things; basically anything besides art. She discovered art last year when taking an introductory art class, and she thought it was a wonderful, refreshing class in comparison to all of her science classes.

Nicholas Milkovich (Class of 2018)

Nicholas is a PhD student at the University of Boston for Biomechanics. He graduated from UVA last spring with a BA and BS in Studio Art and Mechanical Engineering respectively. He began sculpting in high school and continued into college when he began working with metal, mostly steel and bronze. Much of his work is based on personal experiences or of people close to him. He wishes that any viewer will be able to relate to his work without knowing the precise story he has in mind.
