EDITORIAL NOTE 2021 is a year that has brought change, hope, and hard-fought new beginnings. As we are nearing solutions to many troubles, and making decisions we have never had to make before, we wanted this issue’s theme to reflect the feelings of this strange time. Feelings of uncertainty, but conviction, of fear, but also desire. We were drawn to Brink. Brink is an edge, it is a tipping point, it is anticipation, it is liminality. The Brink is what you must approach before taking a leap of faith. Considering how this has been a transitional time on both a global and personal level, we believed Brink would be an inspiring word for artists to express the effects of our current state and how it has manifested in the UVA/Charlottesville community. This is my first issue as Editor-in-Chief- and I couldn’t be more grateful for our awesome, hard-working team and the breath-taking work of this issue’s featured artists. It is not an easy task to produce a zine in a completely remote environment, but the talent and dedication of our creative, marketing, and executive staff has made this issue not only possible, but incredible. With much pride, we present The Scratch Zine’s Spring 2021 issue: Brink.

Blind Fate David Li Pencil and Digital Blinded, the three fates snip away at the lives of others and are prepared once again to make a final decision on a man’s destiny. Often times we are forced to the edge and must accept the journey ahead, and, like dominos, others around us must also come to terms with the consequences of our decisions. During COVID, we have all had to learn to adapt and recognize our impacts on and duties to others. Though the decisions we face may not seem like cutting the “thread of life,” we must continue to remember that, like the mythological fates, we impact other’s lives tremendously and bear that weight we hold responsibly.

This piece relates to the transiton between the past and the fotoree more specifcally the importance of remembering the past despite oor tendency and desire to forget it (ergo the ttle rlo las a ollidarr credited to the Billie Eilish and Rosalia song whose lyrics inspired the work and I think is a cool accompaniment to analyzing the piece'% #or themee Brinke is the point where something new or di"erent is aboot to occor and this piece captores the precise moment of limbo when “something new is aboot to occor%$

Giant Leap for Mankind

Claire Murphy Digital Collage

For each of these collages, I strove to capture the moment just before the “fall”. Right before the bubble pops, the man falls, and the foot hits the ground. The material for all of these came from different sources, which I combined to make a work that appeared to be a snapshot of an action right before the harmony of the scene is ruptured.
