The South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA) is a public, nonprofit organization created by the state of South Carolina to support innovation, research, and economic growth.

SCRA’s mission is to fuel South Carolina’s innovation economy by accelerating technology-driven growth

SCRA does this by:

n Supporting startups with targeted funding, coaching, and resources

n Pre-seed investment via SC Launch, Inc., the investment affiliate of SCRA

n Connecting businesses with universities and industry partners

n Helping move research and new technologies into the market

n Providing lab, office, and innovation spaces

SCRA’s Tax Credit Program

Choose Where Your Tax Dollars Go!

Through South Carolina Research Authority’s tax credit program, you can redirect your state tax dollars to help bring groundbreaking — even lifesaving innovations to market.

That means your tax dollars can do more than pay bills. They can power South Carolina’s innovation economy.

The Industry Partnership Fund (IPF), SCRA’s tax credit program, was established to enable SCRA and its investment affiliate SC Launch Inc., to provide coaching, grants, investments, and other types of support for technology startups and for academic research and development.

Contributions made by individuals and organizations provide a dollar-for-dollar tax credit.Business owners could also be entitled to a federal tax deduction. See page 5 to learn more.

Redirecting Your Taxes

n Make your contribution online at GiveBackToSC.org or write a check payable to “IPF” and mail it to SCRA, 1000 Catawba St, Suite 100, Columbia SC 29201

n Complete a TC36 (SCRA Industry Partnership Fund tax return form) and a SC1040TC (tax credit schedule) form.

n Submit the TC36 and SC1040TC forms when filing your taxes.

Federal Tax Deduction

Businesses and individuals who file a Schedule C may be eligible for a federal tax deduction when contributing to SCRA’s Industry Partnership Fund (IPF).

In addition to receiving a dollar-for-dollar South Carolina state tax credit, certain business entities may be able to treat their IPF contribution as an ordinary and necessary business expense for federal income tax purposes, depending on their tax structure and specific circumstances. For pass-through entities such as LLCs, partnerships, and S corporations, the state tax credit can pass through to the owners while the contribution may provide a federal tax benefit at the entity level, potentially reducing federal taxable income.

Sole proprietors and Schedule C filers should consult their tax advisor to determine eligibility and the proper treatment of an IPF contribution under current federal tax law. Because tax situations vary, SCRA encourages contributors to seek guidance from a qualified tax professional regarding the potential federal deduction and overall tax impact of participating in the IPF.

As a practicing lawyer in South Carolina, I support SCRA’s Tax Credit Program because investing in innovation is one way to advocate for a stronger, better future for South Carolina.
