People ask me why I work for Girl Scouts or always speak about Girl Scouts. It’s really quiet simple.

Because of Girl Scouting I am a more complete human being:

I am brave.

Through cookies, camping, and working with the community, I have gained courage through doing.

The GSSGC Product Sales Program is designed to make learning important life skills fun and rewarding. Girls have the opportunity to discover their potential and experience success that knocks down barriers and pushes them forward for life.

The staff and volunteers work hard every year to find new ways to motivate you and the community to engage with our program so that everyone can benefit.

I am loved.

For this community is strong and embraces one another.

I am enough.

I am accepted by my Girl Scout sisters, quirks and all, regardless of what the outside world thinks.

More than that,

I am smarter.

Exposure to different people, programs, and the cookie broadens my experiences.

☀☀ Girl rewards that are fun, adventurous and relevant drive girls to reach farther than they thought they could.

I am wiser.

I gather more and more knowledge each year from my peers, my girls, and this community.

☀☀ The I Care program that collects donations to thank our heroes or help someone in need.

☀☀ The proceeds generated that fund activities, camp, community service and more.

Programming broadens my skill set, my eyes, and my world.

As we launch a new product sales year, I challenge you to focus on your confidence and strength as a Girl Scout and entrepreneur. Ask yourself, what is my super power? We all have one, and the 2017 Fall Product Program is all about discovering that part of ourselves.

Unleash the Hero Inside is the theme that will encourage you to be fearless and knock your goals out of the park!

But, ultimately,

I care more.

The Girl Scout Law guides me, and working with selfless volunteers inspires me to be better.

I live more.

The opportunities brought by the “power of the cookie” touch us all.

I laugh more.

Working with children who are honest and real fills my soul until it overflows. It is just plain fun.

Because of Girl Scouting, my life is more.

Without question, I am proud to be a lifetime Girl Scout.

This year we have more options and opportunities than ever on the online platform, and some brand new items on the order card as well. Fall Rally will be at Splash Kingdom Waterpark where Girl Scouts, along with their family and friends, can enjoy an exciting day of play with lunch and programming activities included. Fall Training Registration g n i n i a r T l l Fa n o i t a r t s i g e R

In order to participate in the 2017 Fall Product Program, it is mandatory that one registered adult from each troop becomes the Product Coordinator and completes the online training learning pathway. The Product Coordinator does not need to be a troop leader, but must be a registered adult for the 2017-18 membership year and have a cleared background check on file.

The deadline to complete training in time to attend material pick-up and start the sale on time is September 4, 2017. You must be registered for training by August 31, 2017, to receive credentials in time to complete training for material pick-up. Once the Product Coordinator registers, profiles and training credentials will be created every Tuesday and Friday starting August 15, 2017.

An email from the training system to complete your profile and set your password will be sent. You can then log-in to https://gssangorgonio.litmos.com to complete the course. Only ONE representative (Product Coordinator) from the troop will have user log-in access to the online training. * Any profiles previously created for the 2017 Cookie Sale Program Training will be inactive.

2017 Fall Program material pick-up is September 7, 2017; the same day/time as SWAG pick-up for the Fall Rally. You must complete training by September 4, 2017, to attend and receive your materials at this time. Additional opportunities to pick-up your materials will be at the discretion of your Regional Team.

By Hailey M. Girl Reporter Have you ever expe rimented with Mentos or pe rhaps tested and compared ce rtain brands to see which lasts th e longest? If you have, you wer e creating the basis of a science fair project. On January 26, 2017, Ri ver Heights Intermediate Scho ol held their Second Annual Sc ience Expo, showcasing explic it and intriguing experiments al ong with tri-fold boards expl aining each project. “A scienc e fair challenges our students to think of something that th ey are passionate about or intere sted in that helps to cultivate th eir interest,” says Mrs. Zammit, seventh grade science teacher at River Heights.

Students studied topics such as lip stick longevity and the correlation betwee n music and memory. Referrin g back to what Mrs. Zammit said , all students who really do a go od job on their projects have a pa ssion for the topic, something ab out it intrigues them.

At the science fair, the Robotics class displayed the different robots that they ha ve built in their class. Some robots had claws, others had shovels to scoop things off the ground . Each robot was controlled by a program on a student’s phone. Th is allowed the students to control the robots in a quick, easy, and aw esome fashion.

Every single table th ere had a different part of sc ience displayed. At a table featuring around five or six m icroscopes, one could look into the eye piece and find differing m icroscopic bits and pieces of na ture. Have you ever thought ab out how the game Flappy Bird wa s created?

The medical career s class had an exhibit on clogged arteries and on the different stages of the process.

I myself, did a proje ct on the decomposition of a pepper. I put three peppers in th ree bags of dirt then observed the results

after five days. One pe pper was in foil, one in a Ziploc , and one on its own. The pepper on its own ended up decomposing the most.

In the world of scientifi c research “women are definitely on the rise of getting closer to eq uality,” says Mrs. Zammit. As Girl Scouts, we could make this proc ess go even faster. We have all the power we need to make a chan ge in the world for women and girls!

If we all put our mind s together we could continue to be pioneers in the world of science even at our age! So, get outside , go discover something tha t could be the next new thing in science.

On Friday, Mar ch 30th, Girl Sc outs from Central an d Central West area joined toge ther to label an d package cookie boxes, as well as decorate cards for the military . At the event, girls, boys, mothers, and fathers band ed together to make the even t successful an d provide the best letters and care packages they could for the military organi zations.

The first two st ations focused around the arts and crafts of th e event. At the fir st station, girls were able to co nstruct a swatch out of safety pi ns and beads. A t the next station, you could find girls of all ages bustling around making cards fo r the military.

After completin g their cards, each girl had th e opportunity to place them in a case of cookies, ensuring that th eir warm messages wou ld be shipped to those overseas .

Joining us at th e third station were two officer s from the National Guard.

Participants of the packing pa rty were able to take pictures w ith them or just chat with the tw o of them! One of the officers, Mr. Stopnik believe s that this event “gives people th e chance to see th at military

people are norm al people.” It is clear that those in the military feel the same jo y everybody else does when rece iving a box of Gi rl Scout cookies.

At the next table, there was an informative less on – teaching th e girls how to prop erly fold a flag.

We used miniatu re versions of the flag to repres ent the larger version. At the en d of the lesson, we also learned a very interestin g fact about the fla g: we fold the fla g to only see the st ars, because it symbolizes the importance of ou r 50 states. Next to the flag folding lesson, there wer e stacks of chalk that allowed girls to decorate the concrete floor w ith whatever they please. Message s ranged from troop shout-outs , to colorful names, and draw ings varying from flowers to hearts.

The final station was the most important one of all, there we labeled each bo x of cookies with a

sticker and re -packaged th em into boxes. A t each table, there were differen t cookies and a different team of girls, each using teamw ork to get the job done right.

At the end of the day, every body was exhausted , but overjoye d with the wor k they comple ted.

All participan ts worked as a team to comp lete the proje ct at hand – and th ose ranging fr om young to old were able to bond over a servic e project.

Who Stole the Cookies?

By Grace N. Girl Reporter Did you know that girls from Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council (GSSGC) went to Special Agent, a special STEM event that focused on forensic science, in Redlands?

On Friday, September 16 Junior and Cadette Girl Scouts were able to earn badges - Juniors earned a Detective Badge and Cadettes earned a Special Agent Badge.

Walking into the program center at GSSGC's central offices, the Girl Scouts immediately saw the infamous, bright yellow caution tape. Behind the yellow tape were opened boxes of Lemonade and Trios Girl Scout cookies. Cookies and crumbs had been suspiciously left there. Also left at the crime scene were a receipt and a Girl Scout goal sheet for selling cookies.

Who broke into the cookies? Let’s use our detective skills and find out!

The Juniors and Cadettes were not left alone to solve the crime.

They got some help from professionals. Police officers from the Montclair Police Department and the Redlands Police Department had volunteered their time.

Some of the tools used to solve crimes are microscopes and fingerprint kits. The Girl Scouts were able to use microscopes that had a small screen built onto it.

Microscopes are used to analyze fingerprints, blood, DNA, and anything else that can’t be seen with the human eye. The screen on top let the girls see an image without having to squint their eyes. It was their own little television, or digital microscope.

Another way to check for fingerprints is to dust the area that may have been touched by a suspect. To practice this, the girls had to rub their faces and get oils on their fingers. Next, the girls put

Margaret Scout Service Award The candidate for the Margaret Scout Service Award is an active Cadette, Senior or Ambassador Girl Scout Member registered with the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. and has a minimum of 50 service hours. This award recognizes a single girl for her outstanding service to our Council. Nominations for this award can come from anyone affiliated with the nominee and is familiar with her commitment to the above criteria. The Margaret Scout Service Award recipient is selected by the Council Recognitions Committee.

Lydia Smith Lydia Smith, a Cadette in Southwest Region Troop 935, has earned the Gold Level of the President’s Volunteer Service Award for the past two years, volunteering over 250 service hours each year. A heart for service seems to have been ingrained in her since birth. At the age of two, Lydia went with her mom on a 3-day, 60-mile hike for breast cancer awareness and earned the nickname “Little Grin” for her warm and friendly disposition.

By all accounts she’s never lost that warmth and smile. A primary focus of her Girl Scout years, even as a Daisy, has been helping others and giving back to the community. For Lydia it’s not, “What’s in it for me?” It’s, “what can I do to make the lives of others’ easier and better?”

Lydia serves Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio in many ways: mentoring and training younger Girl Scouts, volunteering as a program aide, assisting with troop programming, helping maintain the alumni database, and being always at the ready to pitch in wherever needed. The secret to her service is that she believes with all her heart that she can make the world a better place, and she acts on that belief.

An exceptional representative in her community for Girl Scouts and her Council, Lydia is especially motivated to help other children. She teaches karate to kids and loves working with disabled children, helping them play baseball. She has compassion for sick children and supports both Ronald McDonald House and St. Jude’s Medical Center. Lydia is a superb role model to other children and an inspiration to the adults in her life.

A girl with a servant’s heart, she’s a member of the National Charity League, Club 21, that supports children with Down Syndrome; serves as crew leader for a Vacation Bible School; and is active in her church youth group. Lydia is also accomplished in many other areas. She’s a member of the Gold Honor Roll at her school, is a black belt in martial arts and a rock climber, participates on her school cross-country team, and is First Place Champion for sparring from the USAMA competition.

Every one of the sixteen endorsement letters in support of this recognition speaks eloquently of Lydia’s caring and compassion for her Girl Scout sisters and for her community. Her passion for helping others shines through in these accolades and they stand as testaments to how deserving she is of the honor of the San Gorgonio Council Margaret Scout Award.

Girl Scout of the Year The Girl Scout of the Year recognition is the highest Council award presented to a girl in grades 9-12 who exemplifies through her words, actions and involvement, the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism and service. Nominations for this award can come from anyone affiliated with the nominee and is familiar with her commitment to the above criteria. The Girl Scout of the Year recipient is selected by the Council Recognitions Committee.

Ivana Wright

Ivana is completing her twelfth consecutive year in Girl Scouts as an Ambassador with Troop 286 in the Central Region. From her first year to this year, she has always stood proud, front and center, ready to participate in every activity and help her sister Girl Scouts and leaders have the very best experience.

A staunch supporter of the Girl Scout mission, Ivana’s commitment to girl empowerment and girl-led programming sets a positive example for other girls, particularly in the way she conducts her cookie sales business. Her leadership can be seen in her achievement of First Place Ambassador Top Seller for her region and Second Place Ambassador Top Seller for Council in 2016.

Throughout her Girl Scout career, Ivana’s Take-Action projects have been well thought-out, addressed significant needs and left the world a better place. For example, for her Silver Award she beautified Clement Middle School by renovating a 10’ x 20’ planter, replacing dirt with a balanced soil mixture, and adding plants and a tree. For her Gold Award, she came back to Mentone Elementary School, which she had attended, engaged a local conservation group to teach third grade students about gardening, revitalized a rose garden, and installed walls decorated by a muralist and sitting areas constructed by volunteer carpenters. For her Ambassador Journey, Ivana created an advocacy statement with Troop 9022, employed guerilla gardening to beautify her community and helped clean and paint a domestic violence center. Having experienced the joy of community service through Girl Scouting, she joined the Fire Explorer program, tutors other students, is a leader in her church’s youth activities, and is President of the Mecha Club at Redlands East Valley High School.

For the past two years, Ivana has offered assistance to Troop 1177 to help them sell unsold cookies. She has mentored and motivated one of the girls to carry on with her work. She even added booths from Troop 1177 to her own busy cookie program schedule as a way to help this newer troop. Always there with a smile and words of encouragement, Ivana personifies the spirit of Girl Scouting. Service to her community and helping others learn inspires her, and she is intent on being a leader for change. We know she will become a great, inspirational leader and continue to be active in Girl Scouting.

The Girl Scouts of the USA Medal of Honor Recipient

The Girl Scouts of the USA Medal of Honor is a national award given for saving life or attempting to save life without risk to the rescuer’s own life.

The night of December 6, 2016, was just a regular evening at home. Kyleigh M., a Cadette with Troop 1217 in the City of Hemet, was eating dinner and watching TV with her siblings. Her dad, Jeremy, had just come home from work and was walking to his bedroom to change out of his work clothes. Down the dark hallway he saw his son Gavin walking towards him and said, “Hi.” Gavin didn’t reply. Jeremy turned on the hall light and saw that his son was holding his hands near his throat and appeared to be choking. Jeremy immediately thought of the Heimlich Maneuver, but couldn’t recall the proper procedure. Knowing that Kyleigh had been trained in CPR and First Aid, he called for her help. Kyleigh quickly ran to her brother and performed the Heimlich Maneuver until the article of food was dislodged.

Although crying and frightened, Gavin soon recovered from the ordeal. Kyleigh’s family is so grateful for Kyleigh’s quick thinking and actions that saved Gavin’s life.

The Commander’s Award for Public Service Recipient

The Commander’s Award for Public Service is awarded for service or achievements that contribute significantly to the accomplishment of the mission of an Army activity, command, or staff agency.

In May of 2017, Monica Shriver, co-leader in Troop 375, was enjoying a nice day at the pool with her children and mother-in-law at Fort Irwin Community Pool, when a 3-year-old slipped into the water. When his mother found him floating, she screamed out for help. Monica, who received her RN license just three days prior, quickly sprang into action. Her training kicked in. She immediately took control of the situation by performing CPR on the young boy. With over a dozen adults and children yelling and screaming, Monica kept her composure and was able to resuscitate the child. Shortly after, the EMT arrived and transported the child to the hospital. Thanks to Monica’s quick thinking and action, later that evening he was released from the hospital and sent home with his family.

The Juliette Gordon Low Society

Camp Skyland Ranch’s renovation and expansion is in full swing, even as it hosted a full complement of summer Girl Scout camp sessions. The million-dollar build-out of Duncan Lodge and installation of a new commercial kitchen is well underway. A ropes course, gaga pits and other amenities have been added to the camp, and several other improvements will be made later this year.
