DEEP ROOTS, REAL RELATIONSHIPS, CURATORS OF MOUNTAIN LUXURY #ONLYATABODE

Stepping into the role of owner and editor of The Scout Guide Park City & The Wasatch Back this year, I’ve been reminded again and again of one thing: community matters. It’s the neighbors who smile on the trails, the entrepreneurs pouring their hearts into their businesses, and the people who make Park City and the Wasatch Back so special. Over the last months, I’ve loved meeting the faces behind the storefronts, hearing their stories, and being inspired by the passion that drives their work.
This year’s yellow cover was chosen with that in mind. It re ects our mission to shine a light on the local businesses, creatives, entrepreneurs and nonpro ts that bind our community together.
For visitors, this guide is a welcome to the best of Park City and the Wasatch Back. For locals, it’s a celebration of friends, neighbors and businesses we’re proud to support. Think of it as a companion: use it to nd trusted recommendations, spark inspiration or discover something (or someone) new.
Our spotlight continues online with insider tips, local favorites, behind-the-scenes stories and a calendar of events.
In addition to the team featured here, I want to recognize Dana Klein and Emily Roth for their creative contributions, and Lori Walker for her behind-the-scenes dedication as digital content manager.
Whether you’re here for a week or call Park City and the Wasatch Back home, I hope you’ll shop, connect and champion these incredible locals.
Warm Regards,

Our mission is to create beautiful living environments that fit and reflect each client, their style, and their home. Each project is a full collaboration with the client’s tastes, needs, and resources carefully considered and kept firmly in mind.

At first glance, Chris O’Connell’s work looks like paintings, their surfaces rippling with color and depth. Step closer and your perception shifts. Are they photographs? Park City photographer Chris O’Connell calls these limited-edition pieces “Psiloscapes,” surrealist landscapes that straddle the line between dream and reality. And yes, they are indeed photographs.
The Scout Guide visited O’Connell at his Park Avenue gallery, across from High West, to explore the practice behind his art and the inspiration that fuels it.
TSG: People often mistake your work for paintings. Why do you think that is?
Chris: From a distance, the textures, colors and surreal compositions trick the eye. There’s a painterly quality to the light and shapes that doesn’t register as photography until you get close enough to see the detail. The “wait… this is a photograph?” moment doesn’t get old for me and I think it’s fun for collectors of the pieces as well It’s a cool conversation piece around the art in their home.
TSG: What exactly is a Psiloscape?
Chris: Psiloscapes are limited edition surrealist landscape photographs I create in the moment. There’s no Photoshop or digital manipulation afterward. All the effects and distortions you see are captured in a single exposure, right there on location. They’re my way of bending reality without losing its raw truth. I spent the first few decades of my career building a ski company (Armada Skis) and photographing skiers. I use a technique I honed over years of photographing people in complicated motion and apply it to shooting landscapes.
TSG: How did the idea for Psiloscapes come to you?
Chris: It actually started during a deeply personal and difficult chapter of my life. I was using psilocybin in nature as a way to cope with the PTSD of losing friends, mentors and my business partner, JP Auclair, in the mountains. Those moments of altered perception, seeing nature in a new and layered way, inspired me to try to recreate that feeling through photography.
TSG: Why is it important to you to capture everything in-camera instead of editing afterward?
Chris: For me, it’s about authenticity and presence. I want the piece to carry the exact energy of that moment in nature. When I’m out there, I’m moving the camera, playing with light and layering elements all in real time. There’s a kind of honesty and imperfection in the process that software can’t recreate.
TSG: What do you hope people feel when they look at a Psiloscape?
Chris: Everyone feels something different. Maybe they feel the calm, the awe or even the introspection I felt when I took it. Art should open doors in your mind you didn’t know were there. Portals.
TSG: Being based in Park City, how does the landscape influence your work?
Chris: In so many ways. The mountains and landscape have this shifting personality. It’s calm one moment, wild the next. The mountains have given me both joy and heartbreak, and I want that duality to show up in my work.

Generosity is a kind of alchemy. It turns small gestures into strength, loneliness into belonging and worry into joy. The art of giving back is really the art of remembering that we’re all in this together. We asked Park City and Wasatch Back locals for their favorite nonprofits, and the result is an amazing list of organizations big and small making a real difference through arts, agriculture, animal care and social services.
Here are ten #Scouted local nonprofits you’ll want to know about and support. Our challenge to you: Check them out on Instagram, choose one or two to champion and see how good it feels to help weave the fabric of a stronger, more connected community.

Send us a DM i @ TSGparkcity and let us know about other nonprofits making a di erence in Park City & the Wasatch Back.

Nestled in Utah’s HEBER VALLEY, Midway lives up to its “LITTLE SWITZERLAND” nickname thanks to Alpine-inspired architecture, flower-box charm and mountain vistas that could fool you into thinking you’ve landed in the Alps. Kick things off at Midway Bakery with a buttery scone or one of their legendary, oversized cinnamon rolls that people happily drive miles to devour.
10:00 A.M.
See what all the fuss is about at Ballerina Farm , where Hannah Neelman’s Instagrammable farm store is stocked with homemade breads, fresh dairy and local artisan goods. We swear by their Farmer Protein Powder for our smoothies.

Sand, surf, and sophisticated charm: Newport Beach delights with California’s quintessential o erings and its own unique flair.
For a town so steeped in seafaring history and surfing tradition, Newport Beach didn’t get a particularly seaworthy start. Back in the 1830s, Newport Beach was known as Bolsa de San Joaquin, boasting 14,000 head of cattle, 3,000 horses, and zero boats. Shipping – and the first iteration of the town’s name – came in the 1870s as commercial shipping took o . In 1902, Newport added “Beach” to their moniker, which attracted tourists and Hollywood elite, including Shirley Temple, James Cagney, and John Wayne. At the same time, surfers were flocking to The Wedge, which is still world-famous today. Coastal charm met California glamor with an ample dose of surf culture.

Today, Newport Beach life still revolves around the water, boats – from commercial vessels to the quintessential Du y – reign in what’s the largest recreational harbor on the west coast; surfing is all but ubiquitous; and anglers still bring in a great fresh catch. But you’re as likely to find internationally renowned brands as you are a mom-and-pop sweet shop. To help you navigate both and direct you to local favorites, we’ve shared finds and activities for hitting the town (and waves) of Newport Beach and surrounding Orange County.
