Wetenhall's guest first philosophy features original experiences, local collaborations, and a reverence for the surrounding area. She brought the renowned New York dining institution Swifty’s to both locations and filled the calendars with cultural events and social gatherings, making the hotels vibrant, immersive lifestyle experiences. In 2025, she received the Leadership in Luxury Lifestyle Award from Fashion Group International, presented personally by Martha Stewart, in recognition of her visionary influence and excellence in luxury hospitality. That same year, Palm Beach Atlantic University named her the American Free Enterprise Companion Medalist, celebrating her entrepreneurial spirit and leadership within the industry. WORTH AVENUE THE CLOCK TOWER
Hailed as one of the most exclusive boutique shopping districts in the world, Worth Avenue epitomizes Palm Beach style and is historically significant for two primary reasons: Addison Mizner built the Everglades Club here and created the eclectic Mediterranean Revival architectural style that became all the rage across Florida during the 1920s. Worth Avenue has been (and still is) the launch pad for many famous luxury brands. Be sure to explore the vias and don’t miss the Clock Tower at the east end of Worth Avenue a monument to the Palm Beach Pier, which stretched into the Atlantic from 1926 to 1969.
THE COLONY HOTEL
Landmarked by the Town of Palm Beach in 2020, The Colony Hotel was designed by the architectural firm of Simonson & Holley and erected in 1946-47 during the town's second building boom. The iconic British Colonial style “Pink Paradise” has hosted many famous dignitaries over the last 75 years, such as the Duke and Dutchess of Windsor, who resided in one of the penthouse suites for multiple seasons. Under the leadership of owners Sarah and Andrew Wetenhall, the hotel has undergone an extensive refurbishment in recent years. They brought in a fresh new look (and clientele) while respecting the hotel's landmark status. The newly re done lobby, now called the Living Room, features a fantastical de Gournay mural, which was inspired by a postcard that illustrated the original mural from 1947, that spans the entire lobby.

HENRY MORRISON FLAGLER MUSEUM: WHITEHALL
Designed by acclaimed École des Beaux Arts trained architects John Carrère and Thomas Hastings and completed in 1902, this Palm Beach landmark was proclaimed by the New York Herald to be “more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnifi cent than any other private dwelling
in the world.” These architects also collaborated on the design of many other Gilded Age landmarks, including the New York Public Library and the Fifth Avenue mansion of Henry Clay Frick (now The Frick Collection art museum). The immensely wealthy Henry Flagler, co founder of Standard Oil, built the 75-room, 100,000 sq. ft. Gilded Age mansion as a wedding present for his wife, Mary Lily Kenan Flagler. The once private residence is now a non-profit museum open to the public that offers programming, lectures, and many sought after Palm Beach events.

THE LAKE TRAIL
In the 1890s, the Lake Trail was the main transportation artery on the island. Today, no visit to Palm Beach is complete without a walk or bike ride (or rollerblade, like our editor prefers) along the gorgeous multipurpose path that winds alongside and through some of the most notable landmarks on the island. The longest section of the Lake Trail extends from Royal Poinciana Way to almost the northern tip of the island. The shorter but more historic section is between Royal Poinciana Way and Royal Palm Way. Bikes can be rented at Palm Beach Bicycle Trail Shop (50 Cocoanut Row). The staff offers helpful tips and (can usually supply) a basic map.
THE BREAKERS PALM BEACH
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Breakers Palm Beach opened on January 16, 1896 as the Palm Beach Inn and occupied the beachfront grounds of the Hotel Royal Poinciana, that had opened two years earlier. Guests began requesting rooms “down by the breakers” (referring to the waves at the beach), so founder Henry Morission Flagler eventually renamed it The Breakers. Rooms started at $4 per night and reservations included three meals a day. The guest register reads like a "who’s who" of early 20th century America: the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Astors, as well as Andrew Carnegie and J.P. Morgan, vacationed alongside US presidents and European nobility. Today, The Breakers has prevailed as one of just over 1,000 family owned
businesses in the US that is over 100 years old and still under its original ownership. The resort has also been recognized as one of the longest continuously operating businesses in the state of Florida.

NORTON MUSEUM OF ART
One of the largest fine art museums in the Southeastern United States, the Norton Museum of Art is a cultural mainstay in Palm Beach County. The museum was founded in 1941 by industrialist Ralph Hubbard Norton, who commissioned architect Marion Sims Wyeth to design and build the Art Deco/Neoclassical original structure. In 2019, the museum completed a major expansion, led by internationally acclaimed Lord Norman Foster. The $100 million project included a new 59,000 sq. ft. wing and entrance on South Dixie Highway. Under the leadership of Ghislain d'Humières, the museum's collection has expanded to more than 7,600 works, with a concentration in European, American, and Chinese art, as well as contemporary art and photography. PALM BEACH PAR THREE
Florida’s #1 oceanfront golf course, the Palm Beach Par Three Golf Course is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Florida’s beautiful Intracoastal Waterway. Originally designed by legendary golf course architect Dick Wilson and his apprentice Joe Lee in 1961, the golf course was redesigned and completely renovated in 2009 by World Hall of Fame champion Raymond Floyd. Beautiful landscaping, along with two lakes and lush paspalum turf, creates a stunning tropical setting where there’s always an ocean breeze. With 18 beautiful holes from 81 to 211 yards and three sets of tees on each hole, this par three golf course is unlike any other. Don’t miss the al fresco restaurant on the second fl oor of the Key West style clubhouse.

Get ready for your close-up, Palm Beach! As we head into Palm Beach’s 147th Season, the Historical Society’s exhibition Sunshine Cinema: Florida in Film celebrates Florida’s place in movie history from the silent era to streaming hits with dazzling artifacts, interactive displays, and cinematic flair.
Long before Hollywood’s rise, Florida was already creating movie magic. In the early 1900s, Jacksonville became known as the “Winter Film Capital of the World,” attracting more than thirty studios with its sunlight, scenery, and convenient rail links. Those bright skies and diverse landscapes provided the perfect canvas for the nation’s first storytellers behind the camera.
As Hollywood consolidated production out West, Florida’s own film boom slowed, but its scenery continued to inspire. In the 1930s, Wakulla Springs doubled for Tarzan’s jungle, and the Florida Keys set the scene for Key Largo the 1948 thriller that sparked the real life romance between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Mid century brought new portrayals, some glamorous, others gritty. The 1970s and ’80s delivered Jaws 2, Scarface, and Miami Vice, casting Florida as a landscape of danger, desire, and neon excess. Lighter favorites, such as Cocoon, Caddyshack, and Follow That Dream, reminded audiences of the state’s playful side and sunshine charm.
By then, Florida itself had become a cinematic character its beaches, boulevards, and tropical storms shaping how the world imagined leisure and reinvention. From jungle adventures to pastel lit thrillers, every genre seemed to find a home here. These portrayals didn’t just use Florida as background; they helped define the state’s identity: vivid, unpredictable, and alive.
Moviegoing itself evolved dramatically. Ornate theaters such as the Paramount in Palm Beach offered chandeliers, live music, and velvet seats that turned filmgoing into an event. By mid century, drive ins sprang up across the state: families watched double features under the stars a uniquely Floridian mix of comfort and open air fun.
Palm Beach County enjoyed its own share of screen glamour. The silent comedy The Palm Beach Girl (1926), starring Bebe Daniels as a spirited heiress, captured the island’s image as a playground of elegance and freedom. Later, Preston Sturges’s The Palm Beach Story (1942) turned the same setting into a
sharp witted satire about marriage, money, and high society proof that Palm Beach was already shorthand for luxury and excess. Decades later, hometown star Burt Reynolds filmed B. L. Stryker in Palm Beach County, pairing celebrity appeal with local pride and mentoring emerging talent through his Jupiter based institute.
That creative spirit still thrives. Recent productions like The Ride (2022) in Jacksonville and Because of Charley (2021) in Central Florida show independent filmmakers rediscovering authentic local settings. And Apple TV+’s Palm Royale (2024) brought the glamour of 1960s Palm Beach to a new generation, with aerial views of The Breakers and the Bath & Tennis Club anchoring its vintage aesthetic.
Florida’s on screen legacy is less about the number of films shot here than about how movies mirror the state’s personality its light, contradictions, and flair for reinvention. Cinema has shaped how the world sees Florida: adventurous, audacious, and always in motion.
THE EXHIBITION
Now on view at the Richard & Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum, Sunshine Cinema: Florida in Film immerses visitors in this remarkable story through film clips, historic objects, and interactive experiences. Highlights include an Edison Kinetoscope, vintage cameras, and Alexander W. Dreyfoos Jr.’s groundbreaking Video Color Negative Analyzer, along with costumes, posters, and memorabilia from Florida based productions. Guests can experiment with early film effects, try silent era color tinting, and see which Hollywood era best matches their own screen style.
The exhibition is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with regular museum admission of $12 and free or discounted entry for members, students, and Museums for All participants. Sunshine Cinema runs through May 2026 a must see for anyone who loves film, Florida history, or the timeless allure of the silver screen.
