As a child, my family and I would take a road trip to Wyoming from Louisville to visit my grandparents who lived in Lovell, Wyoming, and ran a Best Western in the small town. My grandfather, a Danish immigrant turned cowboy, loved horses, hunting, fishing, and the Bighorn Mountains. My grandpa was quite the character in his Levi’s, boots, cowboy hat, and pearl snap shirts, never forgetting to complete his outfit with a trusty tobacco pouch, ready at a moment’s notice to roll a cigarette. During many of these summer trips we would road map our way over to Jackson, camping in Yellowstone along the way, to visit our cousins who knew a lot more than us midwesterners about horses and rodeo. These are now fond memories of a time gone by, ones that I cherish and hold a special appreciation for as our town continues to change.

Though I miss the old Jackson Hole from my childhood, it is important to embrace and enjoy all the newness of growing as a community. Much of this growth is owed to the small and family-owned businesses that make up the fabric of our quaint town and keep the spark of Western determination going to this day.

The Scout Guide Jackson Hole is a publication dedicated to promoting our treasured local businesses. I hope you will use this book as a trusted resource for your stay and that you enjoy all the magic, new and old, of our town.

Best known as the singer/guitarist for Tram Jam at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, he has played festivals and venues throughout the Rockies. Chanman has opened for acts such as Robert Cray, Leon Russell, The Wailers, Third World, Greg Brown, and Robert Rudolph and the Family Band. He owns a home in Wilson, WY with his wife, Kathie, has two grown daughters, and lives to ski, play music, and enjoy the mountain lifestyle.
