NEWS Book a table, give a free donation! The next time you book a table at a restaurant would you like to give a donation to Scotty’s Little Soldiers without any cost to yourself? Sounds like a no brainer to us. Well now you can through Charitable Bookings. Just download their app from the App Store or visit Charitablebookings. org to register. They have almost 5,000 restaurants across the UK signed up and everytime you book a table through Charitable Bookings, the restaurant will make a £1 donation per head to Scotty’s Little Soldiers.
obstacle course for junior fundraisers Over 50 fundraisers have already signed up to take part in the Rock Solid Race for Scotty’s in
October. Set in the woodlands surrounding the
Silverstone race circuit the Rock Solid Race is a 5, 10 or 15k muddy obstacle run.
Joining the main event is the Rock Solid Stars race for 5-14 year olds. This is a 2km course
(multiple laps available for the older kids) with
a range of challenging obstacles to overcome. Any children fundraising for Scotty’s who
manage to raise £150 or more will receive a
free Under Armour Camo t-shirt! They’ll also
receive a free Scotty’s headband if they raise

Back to the start Founder Nikki Scott looks back at the inspiration and motivation behind the start of Scotty’s Little Soldiers... Whilst redesigning our website we’ve spent lots of time re-looking at the content and background information about the charity for supporters and beneficiaries to read. It reminded me of how far we have come and that it’s important to keep telling the story of how Scotty’s Little Soldiers became the charity it is today. Losing my husband Lee and having to tell my two children, Kai and Brooke of his death was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I’ll never forget those first 9 months following Lee’s death where I saw the spark in Kai’s eyes go out. It wasn’t until the kids and I were dragged on holiday by family members 9 months after Lee had been killed that I first saw Kai smile again. Splashing around in the pool with family, it really was a chance to leave our troubles at home and have some fun. That was when the idea of Scotty’s Little Soldiers first came to mind. I had previously looked for support for the children but despite there being lots of excellent charities for ‘the guys’ there was nothing dedicated to helping our bereaved Forces kids. I thought, if I can help just a handful of children smile again its worth it. So Scotty’s Little Soldiers (in Memory of Lee who was known as Scotty in the Army and called Kai his little soldier) was born. The original idea of Scotty’s was to give bereaved Forces children the chance to smile and have fun by providing breaks at a
holiday home. Since then the charity has provided hundreds of holidays at its 6 holiday Lodges and also at Center Parcs. We also realised that whilst the breaks provided much need respite there was much more help needed by these brave young individuals. That’s when we introduced our Support programme and teamed up with Winston’s Wish to provide access to professional bereavement counselling. We’ve also added a range of development grants through our Strides programme, so the charity has become much more than just fun activities. I know Lee would be massively proud of his kids and of the charity we have built in his name. We are determined to provide ongoing support to all bereaved Forces children throughout their childhood so we still have such a long way to go. It’s important to look back at all the great work that has been done to date by our team and volunteers around the UK but we are also very focused on the road ahead. We are committed to providing support to every bereaved forces child but we cannot do this without your amazing fundraising and donations. Thank you so much for allowing me to do this much need work and doing it in Lee’s name. I’m honoured that you choose to support us and hope that you’ll continue to do so in the future. Nikki x

the Future Chief Executive Stuart Robinson talks about the charity’s future plans We’ve always been 100% focused on running Scotty’s Little Soldiers in what we call ‘the right way.’ With transparency and what’s best for our beneficiaries at the heart of everything we do. Every decision made at Scotty’s always starts with the question ‘how does this help the children of our fallen heroes’. If the answer is ‘it doesn’t’ then quite simply we don’t do it. As a supporter of Scotty’s you will probably be aware of our 3 assistance programmes; Smiles (all the fun stuff), Support (bereavement counselling) and Strides (personal development). We believe our Smiles programme is pretty comprehensive with every family having access to a holiday break each year, group events such as the Christmas party and various other special experiences, gifts and vouchers throughout the year. Within the Strides programme we have a wide range of development grants suited to all ages and thanks to the Annington Trust we have been able to offer places at the amazing Outward Bound Trust camps this summer. In the long term we plan to add additional benefits to Strides which will include mentoring and work experience opportunities. Our main focus right now however, is on the Support programme. Feedback from our beneficiaries suggest families are not receiving the full rounded support they need either because this support doesn’t exist or because they are unsure of where to find it. We are currently working hard to develop version 2 of our MemberZone, a dedicated website for our Scotty Members to log on to in order to access all the activities on offer from Scotty’s. Families will be able to book all their
activities & holidays, apply for grants and even chat with trained practitioners online via the new site. We’ll have discussion boards for families to offer help and advice to each other and links to other organisations and charities which also offer valuable assistance. Indeed we are working especially hard to develop relationships with other Forces charities, with bereavement organisations across the UK and with the MOD itself to ensure we are working together for the best of our bereaved Forces families and avoiding duplication of work. Nikki and I are working hard to source funding for a dedicated Family Support Worker at the moment. This role will be able to provide one to one support to our families as they need it, helping with everything from bereavement counselling, to where to find the best financial advice. We’re hoping to recruit this role in the next few months. Putting all these amazing features in place is essential to ensure we provide the level of help bereaved Forces families need. Likewise building a sustainable charity which is financially sound and run in the right way is equally essential. If we don’t have the right infrastructure and resource in place we will not be able to provide this support for the long term. We’ve made a commitment to our Scotty Members to be there for them throughout their childhood, whenever they need us. We’re going to need your help to keep this promise so we hope you’ll join us on our journey and support Scotty’s Little Soldiers in any way you can.

NIKKI’S BLOG: I don’t know about you but I am loving the sun at the moment, I always seem to feel so much brighter and relaxed when the sun is out. I have just returned from a week away staying with family in Plymouth and I absolutely loved spending quality with the kids. The best part had to be seeing them at the National Aquarium, they were so excited and so keen to learn and read all the facts about the creatures under the sea, sometimes I find myself just staring at them bursting with pride, after all they have been through and all the heartache they feel they are still amazing kiddies who just love spending time with the family and having lots of fun ;-) That’s the most important thing for me, that Kai and Brooke can look back on their childhood when they are older and have lots of happy memories and not just remember the pain and dark days. I guess that’s why I started Scotty’s in the first place though isn’t it? To raise enough money for a holiday home so families like my own, can have some time away and make new happy memories and now thanks to everyone who has supported Scotty’s the charity owns 6 holiday homes all over the UK. Amazing! Something else that I think is amazing is that this year the charity has sent 155 families away on a well-deserved break! Can you believe that? I cannot stress how much these breaks are needed. The brave children, like Kai and Brooke, have had their worlds totally turned upside down and although I’d like to say it gets easier, anyone who has lost someone knows it doesn’t. Life just changes and you learn to find new ways. It’s the same for the kids. They don’t get over losing a parent, there are always new challenges and heart aches to face; birthdays, anniversaries, first day at school, achieving something special that you wish both parents could witness, turning 18, taking driving lessons, which is why it’s so important to me that Scotty’s continues to grow and has support from the public, because without this support, we won’t be able to continue sending the families on these breaks. Right before I head off back to my desk, I just want to take this opportunity whilst I am reflecting on the holidays to say thank you for the support so far and to ask for everyone to continue to keep Scotty’s in the front of their minds ;-) Please keep spreading the word and telling people about the charity. Strides • The Scotty Allowance - a small grant available to every Member, every year, to help with the cost of school trips, sports clubs, music lessons and other similar activities. • Scotty’s Driving School - when our Members turn 17 they can apply for a grant to cover the cost of their first 10 driving lessons. • The Higher Education Grant - for Members about to leave the charity as young adults and head off to University there is a £1,000 grant available to help with tuition fees, accommodation etc. • Work Experience - Helping our Members find the best work experience opportunities. Scotty Members
We call the brave young individuals who join Scotty’s our ‘Scotty Members’. It’s the club they’re proud to be a member of but no one really wants to join. Who can become a Scotty Member? Scotty’s Little Soldiers has been set up to provide support to children who have lost a parent serving in the British Armed Forces of the Crown. The charity supports it’s Members from 0 up to 19 years old. As long as the child’s parent was a serving member of the Armed Forces at the time of their death (or was medically discharged & subsequently passed away) they can benefit from the activities on offer. Army, Navy or RAF are all included as are Regular and Reserve forces (TA). Their parent’s death may have been on tour, an illness or an accident and their parent’s marital status is irrelevant - at Scotty’s we’re supporting the children of our fallen heroes, irrespective of their personal & family circumstances. There’s no means testing at Scotty’s, every child is treated in exactly the same way and has access to exactly the same benefits and activities. We know there are so many more children around the UK who could be benefiting from the charity’s support. Please spread the word and help us to Help their Children Smile. rockley Park Rockley Park is the newest addition to our Scotty Lodges. In fact it’s actually our first Scotty Caravan. It’s slightly smaller than our other homes so isn’t officially a Lodge but it has everything you’d expect to find at a Scotty’s holiday home. It’s extra special as it was donated to us by the Undentable Trust, a charity set up in memory of Captain Mark Hale by his Brother and Sister. We’ve given the caravan the usual Scotty treatment and kitted it out with toys, flat screen tvs, games and even a new deck. Rockley Park enjoys views over Poole Harbour and has everything our families have come to expect from a Haven Holiday Park. All the great activities and facilities on a secure location. There’s evening entertainment and an all day kids club, heated indoor and outdoor
pools and a cool SplashZone and Water Flume as well. There are lots of outdoor activities such as archery, tennis, a climbing wall and crazy golf. There’s also a spa so parents can relax whilst the kids are entertained by the Haven team. All our Scotty Lodges have fully equipped kitchens but if our families decide not to cook themselves (they are on holiday after-all), Rockely Park has it’s own Fish & Chip restaurant, Mash & Barrel bar and restaurant, a harbour-side fish restaurant, summertime BBQ’s and even a Papa John’s Pizza House! Our Rockley Park Caravan is definitely a fantastic addition to our 5 other Scotty Lodges and we’re sure it will be a firm favourite with all our Scotty Members. Scotty Lodges are available exclusively to beneficiaries of Scotty’s Little Soldiers.

ScottyChallenges Our charity challenges have got a new look web site and plenty of new look challenges! We’ve recently relaunched Scotty Challenges, the home of all our charity places at challenge events around the UK and beyond. Over the next few pages we’ll showcase some of these events and hope to inspire you to set yourself your own personal challenge in support of Scotty’s Little Soldiers. The site is organised into 3 areas: Running events; Obstacle Races; and Cycling & Other. The Cycling & Other category not only includes amazing cycling adventures such as the Grand Caynon to Las Vegas trip but also extreme challenges such as sky diving and bungee jumping, and overseas treks. Featured Challenges: Check out the web site for the full list of challenges but here are a few of our recommendations! Rock Solid Race - 29th October, Milton Keynes One of our favourites and we’re hoping to have over 50 fundraisers joining us in the woodlands near Silverstone race circuit for this muddy obstacle course. There are 5, 10 and 15km distances so something for everyone! Registration is just £35. More> Revolve24 - 10th September, Brands Hatch Ever wanted to race around this iconic

circuit on your bike? Well here’s your chance! The Revolve24 is a cycling endurance challenge. There are a number of distance/time options but the main event is the team 24 hour challenge. Enter as a team and complete as many laps as you can in 24 hours! More> London 2 Brighton - 27th May, London/Brighton Run, walk or jog the 100km distance from London to Brighton! This event has proven to be extremely popular and is a challenge for most individuals whatever your level of fitness. More>

Jump FOR SCOTTY’S Take on a sky dive for Scotty’s and tick it off your bucket list! A tandem sky dive is something everyone should experience at least once in their lives. We explain how you can tick this off your bucket list and support the children of the fallen at the same time. The thought of jumping from a plane at over 10,000ft scares the hell out of most of us yet thousands sign up every year to conquer their fear and take on a charity sky dive. We work closely with the guys at Click and Jump who organise jumps around the UK and are also the sole representatives of charity jumps with the Red Devils! Training beforehand takes about 30 mins and you’ll have an experienced and fully qualified instructor with you. There’s no upper age limit but you do need to be 16 years or over.
There’s a £50 registration fee and a minimum fundraising target of £500 to reach but once your friends and family hear what you’re planning we’re sure you will have no problem smashing that. To find out more about Sky diving for Scotty’s head over to the Scotty Challenges site here.

Overseas treks Overseas treks are usually the pinnacle of fundraising challenges, a once in a life time chance to raise a large amount of money for charity and experience a truly life changing challenge. We have a range of overseas treks now available through the Scotty Challenges site. These include classics such as the Inca Trail, the Great Wall of China and Mount Kilimanjaro. We’ve also got extreme challenges like the Everest Base Camp trek - one for the serious adventurers. Our overseas treks are organised by industry leaders, Discover Adventure and have all the safeguards and expertise you could ask for. We have a number of specific treks listed on the Scotty Challenges site but you can take part in any of the Open challenges on the Discover Adventure website for Scotty’s.

At Scotty’s we have made a promise to our brave young Members that we will be here to support them throughout their childhood. In some cases that will be for the next 18 years & in order to keep that promise we need your help to continue to raise funds and awareness for the charity. Here’s the low down on how to fundraise for Scotty’s... If you’re thinking about organising your own fundraising event here are some useful tips on how to do it. 1. Register your event - pop along to the Scotty’s website and register your fundraising by answering a few questions on the fundraise page. 3. Read through your fundraising pack - We’ll email you a fundraising pack with even more tips and advice together with your unique Scotty’s Event code. 4. Raise funds - the easiest way to raise sponsorship is to use an online giving site, that way the money is sent directly to Scotty’s by the website you use. You can also make card payments via our website, over the phone , send us a cheque or pay your funds raised directly into the charity’s bank account. Volunteer for scotty’s We’re looking for volunteers to join us in our mission of supporting the children of our fallen heroes. We know you all lead busy lives so we’ve created different types of Scotty Volunteers to make it easier for you to offer your support.
Fancy raising money for Scotty’s by taking part in a fundraising challenge or organising a one-off collection? You sound like one of our amazing fundraisers! Check out the previous page for fundraising ideas. If you’d like to put your name down as a volunteer but know you don’t have the time to organise lots of events yourself maybe you’d like to become a Reserve Volunteer? We’ll add your name to our database and when something in your area comes up we’ll give you a bell. If you have a bit more time to spare and would like to be a little more proactive in organising charity collections then you sound like a Regular Volunteer to us! Finally we have Volunteer CoOrdinators. These positions are by invitation only following a successful stint as a Regular Volunteer. There are lots of ways you can help such as attending cheque presentations in your area on behalf of the charity, organising collections at supermarkets, raising awareness of the charity in your region and supporting other Scotty fundraisers at their events. Corporate Sponsorship Sponsorship of events and equipment is a great way for organisations to support the charity and promote their brand at the same time. Partners such as USN, Survisor and DX have all covered the cost of equipment for fundraising events including banners, gazebos and team kit. These are essential pieces of equipment needed by the charity when raising awareness at events around the country but are expensive to purchase. Our friends at Duff Morgan sponsor our Citroen DS3 and provide free servicing, another major cost to the charity taken away. The annual Scotty’s Ball makes a great profit for the charity because of the generosity of sponsors whose funds cover the costs of the event allowing ticket sales and the auction to go to the charity. We’re also looking for sponsors to assist with the funding of our fabulous Christmas Party event for the children. Scotty’S LITTLE SoldierS The charity for bereaved British Forces children
Scotty’S LITTLE SoldierS was founded by Nikki Scott following the death of her husband Cpl Lee Scott in Afghanistan in 2009. Nikki and Lee had two young children so Nikki saw first hand the effects losing a parent can have on a child. She decided to set up Scotty’s Little Soldiers to support all children and young people who have lost a parent serving in our British Armed Forces.
