Scotty Caravan donated by the undentable trust We are amazingly grateful to The Undentable Trust for their extremely kind donation of this caravan to Scotty’s Little Soldiers.

To date all the Scotty Lodges have been

brand new top of the range homes as we are

determined to provide our Scotty Members with the best holiday experience possible. The high quality and spec of the caravan donated by

the Trust means that despite it’s slightly smaller size it will still offer our families an amazing holiday break.

The caravan is located on the fantastic Rockley

Park holiday site which, just like the other Scotty Lodges is a Haven run park with all the great facilities and activities you would expect.

The Undentable Trust was set up in honour of Captain Mark Hale who was killed in

Afghanistan in August 2009 with the objective

that Mark would have wanted as his legacy ‘to help whoever he could and to always give his best’. Thank you Mark.

Scotty’s rugby 2016 This year the guys from Scotty’s Rugby will be back playing 7’s tournements around the UK raising

awareness of the charity. Team boss Nikki O’Donnell is currently on the hunt for players so anyone interested in representing the charity at events this summer please email scottysrugby@scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk for more details.

#scottysday It’s back! Join us on the 10th July to raise as much awareness of Scotty’s Little Soldiers as possible. The 10th of July is a day which will forever be remembered by the team here at Scotty’s Little Soldiers. It’s the day the inspiration behind the charity, Cpl Lee Scott, was killed in Afghanistan in 2009 whilst serving with the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment. Since Lee’s death his memory has inspired thousands to come together to raise funds to support children just like his own, who have been left without a parent whilst they were serving with our Armed Forces. This year we’re asking our supporters to help us raise an enormous amount of awareness on #SCOTTYSDAY through social media and sharing the charity with friends, family and colleagues. Collectively we can create a huge noise and let everyone know why the work of Scotty’s is so important. Why is this so important to the charity, Chief Exec Stuart Robinson explains that “increasing awareness of the charity not only leads to more people getting involved either by donating, fundraising or volunteering, it also leads to other bereaved Forces children who aren’t currently

supported by Scotty’s finding out about the charity.” So how can you get involved in the action on #SCOTTYSDAY? Scotty’s Founder Nikki Scott gives us the low down. “We’re launching #SCOTTYSDAY in early May. Our fab patron Mr Simon Gregson of Corrie fame will be telling everyone how they can get involved in a special video message which will be posted on the Scotty’s Facebook page. We’re not giving too much away right now but those of you who have taken part in #SCOTTYSDAY before will be pleased to hear that our Scotty Tattoos are back and this time we have RAF and Navy versions too!” Make sure you’re following Scotty’s on Facebook and keep a look out in early May for Simon’s special message! “#SCOTTYSDAY is an amazing opportunity for all our supporters to come together on one day and shout about the work the charity does, creating tons of awareness.” - Nikki Scott, Founder

‘What Scotty’s means to me’ - By Beth Wood

Case Study

On the 21st of September 2010 my whole life came crashing down on me when two police officers turned up on our doorstep to tell me that my dad had been killed in a road traffic accident outside his military base in Aldershot. The days and weeks after this were a complete blur and due to his reputation as a joker, I imagined him to pop out of no where and to say that it was all a joke and everything was ok. I really struggled coming to terms with what had happened, it just didn’t seem real. It felt like he was away on tour until I didn’t get the weekly phone calls telling me how he’s going to bring me back a bag of sand and how many pranks he’d played that week!! I decided to turn all my negative emotions into some positives and do some fundraising for a military charity, so I looked on the internet and came across Scotty’s Little Soldiers. I emailed the Scotty office to let them know that I would like to fundraise for them and I also included why, the reply I got made my day.. ‘Become a member’. Since that day, Scotty’s have supported me in so many ways. I received a welcome pack (strangely on the day which I was visiting my dads grave for fathers day) which included a Scotty bag, ball and teddy, It put a huge smile on my face and I was able to go and tell dad all about Scotty’s and what I had received. Scotty’s Little Soldiers have also set me the most amazing birthday and christmas gifts, including a personalised necklace, gift vouchers, kindle fire HD and make up sets. They also send every Scotty member a voucher around the time of the anniversary of the parents death and also around remembrance Sunday, it’s the small, subtle things that mean the most to me. Everyone has bad days when grieving for a parent, this maybe something that reminds us of our parent and instead of smiling and remembering the memories, it can often make us relive every moment, start questioning ‘why my dad?’ and even get us alittle angry so the team at Scotty’s have always been there to give me emotional support, either via text, phone call, email or a simple hug. I do believe that if Scotty’s didn’t exist I would be a completely different woman and would probably still be finding it difficult to move on with my life. I can’t change what has happened, nobody can, but when you have the emotional and physical support like I have received from this amazing charity, I know that it’s ok to smile, i’m not on my own and it’s ok to move on with my life as I have the memories safe in my heart.

Making Strides As a part of our ‘Strides’ programme every Scotty Member has access to an annual ‘Scotty Allowance’, a small grant available to contribute towards activities such as school trips, swimming clubs and music lessons. We recently received this photo from Scotty Member Jess who wanted to show us how the Scotty Allowance has helped her gain her level 7 & 8 gymnastics certificates and badges. Jess’ Mum Abby told us her confidence has continued to grow and she has made lots of new friends since starting the classes. In 2015 Scotty’s provided 84 Scotty Allowances & already 27 Allowances in 2016 so far.

NIKKI’S BLOG: ‘HOW PTSD IS EFFECTING OUR BEREAVED FORCES KIDS’ We see the devastating effects the loss of a military parent has on a child everyday but it wasn’t until recently we discovered the very first diagnosed case of PTSD on one of our Scotty Members. We’ve all heard about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and how it is effecting so many of our servicemen and women but we had never linked this direct to bereaved Forces children. The shocking reality that one of our Members is indeed suffering with PTSD following the death of his Dad has made us realise that it’s quite possible that many more Scotty Members are also dealing with the effects of the disorder. Identifying PTSD is just the very first step in the process of supporting these brave young individuals though and we are only just beginning this journey. As you read this we are currently meeting up with all the leading child bereavement services in the UK and the leading military charities to tackle the issue collectively. At Scotty’s we are determined to lead this initiative and to ensure all our bereaved Forces children are provided with the very best support available. It’s a far cry from our original vision of providing holiday breaks for bereaved families but we recognise the importance of this emotional support and that Scotty’s is uniquely placed to understand the needs of the families we work with. This isn’t something which will be easily fixed overnight and we don’t have all the answers today but, with your continued help, we will help their children smile. Love Nikki

GETTING MUDDY FOR SCOTTY’S HELP US RAISE OVER £30K BY GETTING MUDDY FOR SCOTTY’S The families supported by Scotty’s Little Soldiers have made such huge sacrifices on behalf of their country. We’re asking if you will make a small sacrifice for them by ‘getting muddy for Scotty’s!’ After an amazing Rock Solid Race in Exeter in March we are already looking forward to the next event taking place on the outskirts of the Silverstone Racing Circuit in October. We’re hoping to recruit a team of over 50 participants in support of Scotty’s and to collectively raise more than £30,000 across these two events. The Rock Solid Race is a muddy obstacle course set over 5, 10 or 15k distances - it’s challenging yet great fun for everyone who takes part. Our Chief Executive Stuart Robinson, joined the Scotty’s Little Soldiers

fundraisers at the Exeter event and thoroughly enjoyed it. “The great thing about Rock Solid is that there is something for everyone. A challenging 15k course for those who aren’t new to mud runs as well as a 5k taster for newcomers. Every person I saw finish had a beaming smile on their face and a huge sense of accomplishment.” Rock Solid Race is one of the few mud runs that actually provides free hot showers for runners as well as plenty of food stalls and a bar with music to relax in afterwards.

www.scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk

Registration through the charity is just £35 and there is no minimum fundraising target although we’re asking participants to try and raise at least £100 if possible. Raise £300 or more and you’ll receive a free Scotty’s Little Soldiers Under Armour Technical T-Shirt worth £30.

by most and everyone helps and supports each other out on the course.

Also taking place at the Rock Solid Race is the Stars Children’s Race. A 2k circuit for children aged 5-14 to take part in. Further details can be found on the Rock Solid Race part of the Scotty Challenges website.

Go on, set yourself a challenge and be a part of something special. Get Muddy For Scotty’s.

The Scotty Team will be there in force with a merchandise stall and we’ll have plenty of free protein samples from our friends at USN who will be joining us. To take part you’ll need to do at least a small amount of training beforehand but the 5k distance is achievable

To find out more about the event itself and to watch videos of previous events head over to the official Rock Solid Race website. Then visit scottychallenges.co.uk to sign up.

Scotty Members

We call the brave young individuals who join Scotty’s our ‘Scotty Members’. It’s the club they’re proud to be a member of but no one really wants to join. Who can become a Scotty Member? Scotty’s Little Soldiers has been set up to provide support to children who have lost a parent serving in the British Armed Forces of the Crown. The charity supports it’s Members from 0 up to 19 years old. As long as the child’s parent was a serving member of the Armed Forces at the time of their death (or was medically discharged & subsequently passed away) they can benefit from the activities on offer. Army, Navy or RAF are all included as are Regular and Reserve forces (TA). Their parent’s death may have been on tour, an illness or an accident and their parent’s marital status is irrelevant - at Scotty’s we’re supporting the children of our fallen heroes, irrespective of their personal & family circumstances. There’s no means testing at Scotty’s, every child is treated in exactly the same way and has access to exactly the same benefits and activities. We know there are so many more children around the UK who could be benefiting from the charity’s support. Please spread the word and help us to Help their Children Smile. You can read more about becoming a Scotty Member at www.scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk/ support

fundraise for the children of our fallen heroes

At Scotty’s we have made a promise to our brave young Members that we will be here to support them throughout their childhood. In some cases that will be for the next 18 years & in order to keep that promise we need your help to continue to raise funds and awareness for the charity. Here’s the low down on how to fundraise for Scotty’s... If you’re thinking about organising your own fundraising event here are some useful tips on how to do it. 1. Pick an activity - many of our most successful fundraisers start out with something simple, for example maybe a cake sale at work or a fancy dress party. 2. Register your event - pop along to the Scotty’s website and register your fundraising by answering a few questions on the fundraise page. 3. Read through your fundraising pack - We’ll email you a fundraising pack with even more tips and advice together with your unique Scotty’s Event code. 4. Raise funds - the easiest way to raise sponsorship is to use an online giving site, that way the money is sent directly to Scotty’s by the website you use. You can also make card payments via our website, over the phone , send us a cheque or pay your funds raised directly into the charity’s bank account. Check your fundraising pack for more information. 5. Enjoy your fundraising - remember to enjoy your fundraising! Can we help? You’re welcome to ask any questions you might have. You can call us on 0800 092 8571 or email events@scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk Register your fundraising at www.scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk click on ‘fundraise’ at the top of the home page.

Volunteer for scotty’s We’re looking for volunteers to join us in our mission of supporting the children of our fallen heroes. We know you all lead busy lives so we’ve created different types of Scotty Volunteers to make it easier for you to offer your support.

Fancy raising money for Scotty’s by taking part in a fundraising challenge or organising a one-off collection? You sound like one of our amazing fundraisers! Check out the previous page for fundraising ideas. If you’d like to put your name down as a volunteer but know you don’t have the time to organise lots of events yourself maybe you’d like to become a Reserve Volunteer? We’ll add your name to our database and when something in your area comes up we’ll give you a bell. If you have a bit more time to spare and would like to be a little more proactive in organising charity collections then you sound like a Regular Volunteer to us! Finally we have Volunteer CoOrdinators. These positions are by invitation only following a successful stint as a Regular Volunteer. There are lots of ways you can help such as attending cheque presentations in your area on behalf of the charity, organising collections at supermarkets, raising awareness of the charity in your region and supporting other Scotty fundraisers at their events. Check out the Scotty’s website and click on Volunteer to find out more and to sign up! Thank you! Check the ‘volunteer’ section of the Scotty’s website for more information about volunteering for Scotty’s

Corporate friends

As well as our amazing individual fundraisers we also rely heavily on our corporate friends.

Does your organisation have a charity of the year? Many organisations allow members of their team to nominate a charity for them to support during the year. Could you nominate Scotty’s? Or how about applying our Scotty Awareness stickers to your fleet? There are so many ways businesses and other organisations can get involved and help support the children of our fallen heroes; • Financial donations. • Pro-Bono services and equipment. • Sponsorship of fundraising events such as the Scotty’s Ball. • Sponsorship of charity events such as the Christmas Party. • Help to raise awareness of the Scotty’s name and cause. If you think your organisation may be able to help Scotty’s in any way, please get in touch by emailing hello@ scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk or calling 01553 763000.

charity of the year Many organisations allow staff members to nominate a charity for the business to support throughout the year. Why not put Scotty’s forward for your business’s charity of the year? If you need any information to help submit your nomination feel free to email us at hello@scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk.

Scotty’s Corporate NEwsletter We’ve produced a very brief Corporate Newsletter which contains further details about how your organisation might be able to get involved and help support the children of our fallen heroes. To read the latest edition click here.

Corporate Sponsorship Sponsorship of events and equipment is a great way for organisations to support the charity and promote their brand at the same time. Partners such as USN, Survisor and DX have all covered the cost of equipment for fundraising events including banners, gazebos and team kit. These are essential pieces of equipment needed by the charity when raising awareness at events around the country but are expensive to purchase. Our friends at Duff Morgan sponsor our Citroen DS3 and provide free servicing, another major cost to the charity taken away. The annual Scotty’s Ball makes a great profit for the charity because of the generosity of sponsors whose funds cover the costs of the event allowing ticket sales and the auction to go to the charity. We’re also looking for sponsors to assist with the funding of our fabulous Christmas Party event for the children. Held at a different venue each year the 2016 event will take place at Condover Hall and is shaping up to be a magical event. Here are a few of the sponsorship opportunities available: 1. Title Sponsor - £10k 2. Santa’s Grotto - £7k 3. Narnia - £4k 4. Totally Toddlers - £1.5k 5. Members T-Shirts £1k 6. Members Lanyards £500 Your organisations name/logo will be featured throughout and included in our extensive media coverage. All the profits raised from the sale of our Scotty Gear contribute towards the running costs of the charity, meaning more of your amazing donations and fundraising is spent directly on supporting the children. You also help spread the word at the same time!

Scotty’S LITTLE SoldierS The charity for bereaved British Forces children

Scotty’S LITTLE SoldierS was founded by Nikki Scott following the death of her husband Cpl Lee Scott in Afghanistan in 2009. Nikki and Lee had two young children so Nikki saw first hand the effects losing a parent can have on a child. She decided to set up Scotty’s Little Soldiers to support all children and young people who have lost a parent serving in our British Armed Forces.
