WELCOME FROM NIKKI Hello, welcome to our first ever magazine! We hope you like it, it’s our first attempt so I’m sure it will improve and grow over time but we were just really keen to continue to share everything going on at the charity with you. You all make these things happen so it’s so important for us to make sure we keep you updated. Hi guys, I hope you will enjoy reading through our very first Scotty’s Magazine!

It’s all part of our effort to keep our fantastic supporters up to date with everything going on at Scotty HQ and all produced in-house by us so a new experience all round!

Four year’s on from sitting around Nikki’s dining room table discussing the possibility of starting Scotty’s we are now building a sustainable, long term charity providing real support to the children of our fallen heroes.

Nikki experienced first hand the need for a charity like Scotty’s Little Soldiers and in the four year’s following we have met so many more brave families who have also gone on to benefit greatly from the charity’s support.

Because of your great support we’ve been able to add so many amazing new activities for the children, many of which are explained in more detail throughout this magazine.

We hope you find it useful and it inspires you to get involved even more.

NEW SCOTTY LODGE ON THE WAY! Chief Exec Stuart Robinson travelled up to Northumberland recently to secure the latest Scotty’s Lodge.

The fourth of Scotty’s holiday homes will open in the New Year at Haven’s Haggerston Castle and will include all the amazing features enjoyed by the other Lodges.

“Haggerston Castle is in the perfect location for our Scottish or northern English Members who previously had to travel a long way to get to one of our Lodges” Stuart said following his visit.

The new Scotty Lodge joins the existing Lodges at Haven sites at Great Yarmouth, Blackpool and Exmouth and is the 4th in the charity’s objective of 6 Scotty Lodges across the UK.

SUPPORT FROM THE HILTON GROUP The charitable arm of the Hilton Hotel Group, the Hilton Foundation, have selected Scotty’s as one of the beneficiaries of their annual charity ball. The ball takes place at the Park Lane Hilton on 22nd November and Scotty’s Founder Nikki will be given 2 minutes to ask guests to make a pledge to the charity. No pressure Nikki!

DX put Scotty on the road Regular supporters of Scotty’s Little Soldiers, DX, the logistics and parcel delivery experts are helping Scotty’s to hit the road with this amazing piece of awareness.

Three of their trucks will feature the Scotty logo and ‘text to donate’ details on the sides and rear of their trailers.

DX also presented the charity with a number of replica models of the truck which are available to purchase from the Scotty’s Webshop whilst stocks last.

Founder, Nikki Scott, pictured above with both the model and full size versions, said “one of our biggest challenges is raising more awareness of the charity so seeing these trucks running up and down the country every single day will help enormously with this. So many people will see the Scotty’s name on our roads now!”

Rugby legend George Chuter has agreed to become a patron for Scotty’s.

George played for Saracens and more recently Leicester Tigers as well as representing England at the Rugby World Cup. We have a full story on George’s involvement on page 12.

Whilst there is much more to Scotty’s than just sending out gifts, we think our brave Scotty Members deserve to be thoroughly spoilt at Christmas time.

So we’ve asked the parent/guardian of every Scotty Member what they would love this Christmas and with your help we can give them all an amazing Christmas present.

We also knew it was key to provide activities which are relevant to our older Members too, so we’re extremely pleased to announce the introduction of Scotty’s Driving School.

Tesco go to phase 2 Following the success of the first wave of Scotty’s Little Soldiers clothing at Tesco’s F&F, the UK’s largest retailer is gearing up to launch the second phase of the range this Christmas.

The clothes are available in a wide range of children’s sizes with items for both girls and boys.

Available only online from Tesco’s F&F website a small amount of items were recently launched in the Tesco Hardwick store near Scotty’s HQ in King’s Lynn, Norfolk to help publicise it’s support for the charity.

100% of the profits are donated to Scotty’s.

For our 17+ year old Members their first 10 driving lessons are on Scotty!

The scheme will be available to all Members aged 17 or 18 and they can select the driving instructor of their choice.

This year Scotty’s awarded it’s first Higher Education Grant to assist with a Member going to University.

MAD ball committee presents £20k Members of the MAD (Make A Difference) Ball committee presented Scotty’s Founder Nikki with a cheque for an amazing £20,000 at this year’s Scotty’s Ball.

The third MAD Ball took place in May this year and raised money to support 4 children’s charities. The committee members are made up of a group who got together following the death of a close friend and decided to raise money for charities in his honour by hosting a wonderful summer ball.

The fantastic event took place in Buckinghamshire and featured music from Bjorn Again and Ministry of Sound DJ Tim Cullen.

Exclusive members website launching

To keep Scotty Members and their families’ up to date with all the fantastic support activities available to them the charity will shortly be launching a dedicated private Members website.

Accessed by a unique password each family will be able to log on and find more information about all the activities as well as sign up for events, book tickets and check the availability of the Scotty Lodges.

CEO, Stuart Robinson said “we have so many great opportunities for the children so its incredibly important that we communicate the activities to them in the right way. This website means we can have everything in one place, up to date and accessible to all our families.”

The Members website is expected to go live before the end of 2014.

scotty’s official charity ball We’ve just celebrated the 4th Scotty’s Little Soldiers charity ball.

Here’s a full report on the evening including all the winners in our supporters award ceremony.

Held once again at Whittlebury Hall in Northamptonshire, the Scotty’s Ball took place on Saturday 18th October and saw a collection of fundraisers, corporate supporters, Scotty families and new-comers to the charity come together to celebrate a fantastic year of fundraising.

Through a selection of games and auction lots a staggering £19,000 was raised on the night. Cheque presentations from the Kilimanjaro Challenge and the MAD Ball committee saw an additional £86,000 donated to the charity as well.

Guests were entertained once again by the amazing ‘The Late Shift’ band, an ever present at the Scotty’s Balls.

The event was sponsored by EZE Group and also supported by regular corporate friends of Scotty’s; DX, Wolfstar PR, FastAnt and Vivreau.

Chief Exec Stuart Robinson said how proud he was of the team, adding, “the event is organised in-house so once again the guys have done a fantastic job putting the ball together. Everyone has had an amazing

evening and we’ve all been inspired by some truly great fundraisers who have picked up awards.”

A regular feature at the Scotty’s Ball, the awards are given to a selection of stand out fundraisers. All the award winners are featured in our special section on the following pages.

A special thank you goes to Julie Chapman, Vanda James, Debbie Dack, Joe Howlin, Sharon Robinson, Jason Chapman and Sue Robinson for working so hard on the evening (despite paying for your tickets!).

scotty’s best friend The Scotty’s Best Friend Award goes to a volunteer who represents everything a charity could ask for from a supporter. Proactive, courteous and professional at all times, Tanya Knapper has given so much Scotty’s over the last 12 months. Tanya has organised large scale collections at venues such as Birmingham City Football Club, stood in the rain outside supermarkets selling merchandise and even completed a sky dive and 5k run for the charity.

We rely so much on our corporate partners for their amazing support and this year’s winner of the Corporate Fundraiser Award has raised the bar once again. For the reigning Premiership Champions to select Scotty’s as their charity of the year was absolutely fantastic and raised a huge amount of awareness. They also allowed us to collect at matches, attend corporate events, provide mascot opportunities for our Scotty Members, get the players involved in the charity and much much more.

The Light Dragoons sadly suffered a number of losses during operations in Afghanistan so a group of 30 Army wives based at Robertson Barracks in Swanton Morley decided to come together and raise money for Scotty’s Little Soldiers.

They organised a 24 hours relay run around the barracks with the aim of completing 500km. They smashed this target, running a combined 1,374km and raising £3,590 in the process.

The Kilimanjaro Challenge

This amazing group of ladies came together to fundraise for Scotty’s Little Soldiers following the death of one of their husbands whilst serving with the British Forces. After seeing how Scotty’s had helped the family they were keen to support the charity in a huge way. They set about organising a trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro!

On the 1st of August, 11 military wives reached the 19,324 ft summit and raised a staggering £66,000 with additional sponsorship still coming in. They were supported by an additional event at Bromsgrove Rugby Club were team members set about beating Scotty’s previous Guinness World Record of the longest ever Rugby Union match at 24 hours and 51 minutes. The guys broke the 25 hours mark and are currently awaiting verification of the new record.

a huge warm welcome to george chuter Taken from Nikki’s regular online blog, here is the full story of George Chuters support for Scotty’s.

We’re really happy to announce that England rugby star George Chuter has become our official charity patron. George is such a great guy who has always gone out of his way to support Scotty’s and is very passionate about the charity.

I am really chuffed that he is now a patron as he really understands the importance of the work Scotty’s does and his passion to support us will be of great benefit. He is retiring from professional Rugby and is currently in the middle of his benefit year (which Scotty’s is one of three charities) but I know he will help raise lots of awareness for Scotty’s within the Rugby world as he ventures into new things.

When I asked George about becoming a patron he said he was ‘delighted’ to become a patron. “My association with the charity and meeting all the other people involved has been an absolute pleasure over the last few years” I am so pleased that he agreed to continue to support Scotty’s by becoming an official patron.

I have never really been a rugby fan but since Ben Kay’s involvement with the charity and the amazing support we received from Leicester Tigers and Louis Deacon I am learning each day and loving the game and the atmosphere of a live rugby match. It’s clear to see that George is a well respected and well loved player from his team mates and fans. I have been told that George was the first man to make 250 Premiership appearances and played in the Rugby World Cup final with England in 2007! He also made 292 appearances for Leicester over 13 seasons and nearly 100 for Saracens before that, plus he also played 40 games for England at various levels of the game!

join the human race Looking for a nice winter challenge?

We’ve teamed up with Human Race, the organisers of Wildman, Iceman and Mudman to become the Official Charity Partner of this winter series.

Off-road mud running has gained huge popularity in the last couple of years and this series is organised by the UK’s leading sporting events company, Human Race.

Scotty’s are benefiting as the official charity of their winter off-road series which consists of 3 thrilling duathlons and trail runs of various distances staged at four unique locations across the South East, each presenting its own spectacular challenge.

Here’s some info on each of the three events: WildMan - 22nd November The course is set on the army testing ground of Ash Ranges, featuring two Trail Run distances and one gruelling Duathlon.

Whichever option you choose will mean hills, mud and then some more hills in wet boggy trails through heather moorland, sounds fun right? You’ll have to save something on the ups for the downhill bits or your quads will be complaining. For the Trail Runners, running with your dog is more than welcome, if you can keep up!

IceMan - 7th February The second race in the Human Race Off-Road Series, IceMan is a no-holds-barred off-road Duathlon and

Trail Running event taking place at the Army Training Ground in Frimley, Surrey. Frimley is the perfect place for getting off the tarmac and into the great unknown, especially if you like mud, dirt and hills!

The IceMan Duathlon consists of a hard two lap 10km off road run loop, followed by a gruelling 3 lap mountain bike circuit with four long, steep hills that the Army’s tank force struggle to take on with a flat 5k run to finish! The off-road 11km or 16km trail runs will take you over rocky, hilly terrain with technical sections and some fast downward slopes for those with nerves of steel.

MudMan - 7th March The third race in the Human Race Off-Road Series brings back to the calendar the infamous MudMan event held in the gruelling grounds of the MOD in Camberley. The MudMan circuit is entirely on the Army military training ground – so it’ll be stony and muddy underfoot in equal measure while the hills will be steep and the competition fierce as always!

The off-road duathlon will take in the same run course as the trail runners over 7.5km, followed by a bumpy, gritty mountain bike circuit over 15km of rough terrain, with a final 7.5k run to finish! The Trail Run event will comprise of a 10km or 15km dirty trail run through forests and gullies, ensuring this race won’t trouble your PB collection but is guaranteed to give you an adrenaline fuelled ride.

How scotty’s helps...

If you’re a new supporter of Scotty’s you might not be aware of exactly how the charity goes about supporting the brave young people it calls it’s ‘Scotty’s Members’.

Scotty’s Little Soldiers is a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved British Forces children. Founded by Nikki Scott following the death of her husband Cpl Lee Scott in Afghanistan in 2009, Nikki saw first hand the effect the loss of a parent can have on a child.

It was on a family holiday some 9 months later that Nikki saw her son Kai, 5 at the time, laugh and smile for the first time since his Dad’s death. She realised that there must be so many more children who had also lost a parent in the British Armed Forces but hadn’t had that opportunity to smile again.

She decided to set up the charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers to do just that, to help their children smile.

Four year’s on and Scotty’s is currently supporting over 180 children through 3 distinct activity programmes; Smiles: Focuses on helping the children to realise that it is OK to have fun and smile again following the loss of a parent.

Activities include breaks at one of the amazing Scotty Lodges (with all travel costs included and money towards food/activities), an amazing group Christmas Party which gives the children the opportunity to create bonds with other children who have also lost a parent under similar circumstances,

gifts at Christmas and Birthdays, a family meal voucher for Remembrance Day, a gift voucher at the anniversary of their parents death and special experiences like meeting their favourite celebrity or becoming a mascot at a football match.

Support: Deals with the more serious and emotional side of bereavement and the charity will shortly be offering all it’s Members full access to professional bereavement counselling and guidance literature.

Strides: The Strides programme focuses on the personal development of Scotty Members as they get older. Members turning 17 can take advantage of the charity’s driving lessons grant and those aged 18 and about to leave the charity as young adults are offered the opportunity to apply for a Further Education grant. All Scotty Members have an annual allowance which can be used to cover the cost of activities such as music lessons, school trips, after school clubs and swimming lessons. For 2015 the charity is also looking to add a work experience project to it’s Strides programme.

devon cliffs The third of our Scotty Lodges is located at the Devon Cliffs holiday park in Exmouth, the flag ship park in Haven’s estate. With sea views and tons of great activities for all ages this is the perfect place for our Scotty families to enjoy a nice break.

As with any Scotty Break the charity covers the cost of travel for our families and upon arrival at the Owners’ Exclusive Lounge they will be given their privilege charge card, with £100 of credit to spend as they wish at the park.

Lodge to keep our Scotty Members entertained there’s so much more to do outside.

The park has indoor and outdoor pools, climbing walls, archery lessons, a private beach, kids clubs and plenty of evening entertainment too.

We’re very proud of our Devon Cliffs Scotty Lodge and it’s been made possible because of the fantastic support we’ve received from our fundraisers. Thank you so much for making this dream become a reality and for providing a much needed respite for so many families.

The Devon Cliffs Scotty Lodge is our largest to date and comfortably sleeps 8. It’s packed with toys and all the essentials a family might need - especially if they have decided to get away at short notice. We make sure the fridge is stocked, there are spare nappies in the cupboard and even a cheeky bottle of wine for the adults.

While the capital sleeps, over £2 million will be raised in 1 night for hundreds of good causes.

At Scotty’s we have made a promise to our brave young Members that we will be here to support them throughout their childhood.

In some cases that will be for the next 18 years & in order to keep that promise we need your help to continue to raise funds and awareness for the charity. Here’s the low down on how to fundraise for Scotty’s...

If you’re thinking about organising your own fundraising event here are some useful tips on how to do it.

1. Pick an activity - many of our most successful fundraisers start out with something simple, for example maybe a cake sale at work or a fancy dress party.

2. Register your event - pop along to the Scotty’s website and register your fundraising by answering a few questions on the fundraise page.

3. Read through your fundraising pack - We’ll email you a fundraising pack with even more tips and advice together with your unique Scotty’s Event code.

4. Raise funds - the easiest way to raise sponsorship is to use an online giving site, that way the money is sent directly to Scotty’s by the website you use. You can also make card payments via our website, over the phone , send us a cheque or pay your funds raised directly into the charity’s bank account. Check your fundraising pack for more information.

5. Enjoy your fundraising - remember to enjoy your fundraising!

Volunteer for scotty’s Thank you to everyone who has recently offered to volunteer for Scotty’s Little Soldiers. It means so much to us.

We have a brand new volunteer system launching before the end of the year so thank you to everyone who has recently offered to help and for being patient with us whilst we set up the new process.

Once we go live here are the ways you will be able to offer your time to volunteer for the charity.

Fundraisers: The vast majority of supporters get involved in this way. You come up with an idea to raise money and awareness for Scotty’s and register your activity on our website using the ‘fundraise’ link.

Our events team will then allocate you a unique event number and provide you with a fundraising pack with lots of tips and information on how to go about your fundraising.

Reserve Volunteer: The simplest volunteer option to take. We’ll add your details to our volunteer database and should an event that we need assistance with occur in your area we’ll get in touch. Note that although more and more activities are taking place all the time this could mean you go several months before an opportunity arises. We’ll do our best to keep you updated with what’s going on within the charity though.

Regular Volunteer: Our regular volunteers tend to fundraise for Scotty’s on a more frequent basis. They will often be proactive in arranging events or collections themselves and will register this activity in the same way as a fundraiser would via our website. We will also notify Regular Fundraisers of events in their area where we might need some assistance - this could be a cheque collection or attending a fundraising event as representative of Scotty’s.

Volunteer Co-ordinator: We have a few Volunteer Co-ordinators to date who have been helping the charity for a while now.

In most cases a Co-ordinator will have been a Regular Volunteer for a period of time and having gained some experience of representing the charity will then be in a position to help other Regular Fundraisers in their area. Our Co-ordinators are the most proactive of volunteers and are always looking for new events or collections to organise. These positions are by invitation only following a successful Regular Volunteer period.

They have been supporting Scotty’s scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk. for several years now and regularly sponsor events such as our Official Scotty’s Ball and last years Members Christmas Party. They have also helped us to organise collections at venues such as Birmingham City Football Club and provided a host of auction prizes for our annual ball.

We’re very fortunately to be in the second full year of fundraising activity by DX. DX have encouraged all their colleagues including the senior management team to take part in fundraising for Scotty’s and the group have to date matched any amount the workforce has managed to raise. In 2013 they raised over £60,000 - absolutely staggering and in addition to this they provide Scotty’s with an amazing free of charge courier service.

We’ll be featuring more of our corporate friends in coming issues and look forward to hearing how your organisation might be able to support the children of our fallen heroes.
