Who would have ever considered the possibility that our message to you in this publication would still involve this awful pandemic? We have all had to adjust our lives to live with the fact and to make every effort to stay safe and keep those around us safe. Real Estate has been declared an essential business so - to some extent - it has been life as usual except for the fact that buyers are hesitant to go into public places and sellers are hesitant to have people possibly bringing the virus into their homes.

Despite all of this - homes have continued to sell, loans are getting closed and escrows are being run pretty much as usual. Arizona and Maricopa County had considerable demand for housing and some of the best numbers in the country for population and personal income growth when the coronavirus storm hit.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, out of all counties in the United States, Maricopa County had the largest numeric population increase from 2010 to 2019. Maricopa County increased by 668,049 people. Juxtapose this population increase with Cook County, Illinois. Since 2010 Cook County’s population declined by 44,793. People want our sun and lifestyle!!!

When it comes to personal income, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that from 2018 to 2019 the average personal income of Arizonians increased by 5.9%. This was the third highest increase among all 50 states. Colorado finished first at 6.1% and Utah at 6.0%. The average personal income growth for all fifty states was 4.4%.

During these unprecedented and uncertain times, I was reminded how appreciative I am to be able to work for such an amazing community. At a time when children were home from school and college and adults working from home was the new normal, our homeowners were mindful and cooperative of our need to close the Community Center and office. Even though our office was closed to walk-in traffic, I have to thank our great administrative staff for keeping things running smoothly while working remotely from home the majority of the time. The SRCA Board and committee meetings immediately moved to a virtual platform using Zoom.

This proved to be very effective and I was delighted to see more homeowners chose to participate by joining the meetings from the comfort of their homes. Our top priority was to keep our homeowners and staff safe. Maintenance personnel continued to work on-site keeping up with the building and lake maintenance as well as Mutt Mitts. Since gyms were closed, the number of homeowners walking our beautiful grounds was amazing to see.

For that, I was glad that landscaping was considered an essential service which meant our landscape contractor, Service Direct Landscape (SDL), did not skip a beat.

During this pandemic, I observed neighbors respecting others personal space by practicing social distancing and using common sense. It has sure been a difficult time. A time where it is more important than ever to be a good neighbor. Being mindful of the parking of vehicles as we hunkered down, being mindful of noise levels as we enjoyed the outdoors and being mindful of those neighbors who might have needed a helping hand.

The SRCA Annual Homeowner’s meeting originally scheduled for April had to be postponed. A new date of June 17, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. has been selected to conduct a simplified meeting essentially for the elections of the new board. This will be a virtual meeting. Information was mailed to all homeowners in May which included how you can participate using Zoom.

While writing this article, Arizona was still on a Stay-at-Home order with some modifications presented for businesses. What will this mean for us? It will not mean that we will be operating as “business as usual” immediately. SRCA is working on a phase in process to reopen the office and amenities, taking precautions every step of the way. One thing I know for certain is that it will be different; how different we do not know. Like it or not, I believe social distancing will be around for some time. We ask for your continued patience as we get through this together. Stay safe.

Have you paid your 2020 Annual Assessment?

If your annual assessment has not been paid or you have not arranged a payment plan by June 30, 2020, a lien will be filed against your property through the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office. Lien filing/release fees will be added to your account and monthly interest continues to accrue at a rate of 12% per annum.

What does having a lien against your property mean to you? It means that there is a cloud on the title. Typically, the property cannot be sold until the past due amount has been paid in full and the lien has been released.

Additionally, having a lien filed against your property could affect your credit.

Should a homeowner’s assessments continue to be delinquent, the account may be turned over to an attorney for collection action without further notice from the association. Failure to pay these assessments could also result in the filing of a personal judgment action and the homeowner will be responsible for all attorneys’ fees, document recording, and any other fees incurred to collect this debt.

We realize we are in unprecedented times and if your annual assessment is delinquent and there are extenuating circumstances, we urge you to contact the Scottsdale Ranch Community Association administrative office as soon as possible to discuss your account and how we can work with you to bring it current. Laguna Elementary School News From Laguna

Hello Laguna Community! This has been a challenging time for everyone and a big shift at Laguna. Students ended the school year in online school due to the COVID-19 mandates. Teachers and students did an amazing job connecting with each other and supporting learning in this unprecedented time.

We have missed everyone so much, and we are looking forward to seeing you all in the coming 2020-2021 school year. If you are new to the community, enrollment is open all summer.

Registration can be accessed online at www.susd.org, under the enrollment tab.

The office will be closed for the summer, but we will be be communicating with families via electronic methods. We hope to see many new families for the 2020-2021 school year!

We look forward to meeting our newest students and will plan a “Meet the Teacher” in August, where students will be able to meet their teacher and drop off supplies. A letter from Mrs. Williams will come out over the summer with specific dates and more information, stay tuned!

Virginia G. Piper Boys & Girls Club Completes Facility, Programming Refresh for Summer Camp Reopening Anyone who lives in the Scottsdale Ranch Community is accustomed to the look of the neighborhood Virginia G. Piper Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. Students, teachers, and parents at Laguna Elementary and residents of the surrounding neighborhood see it every day. But as of April, there is something new about the Club.

While being temporarily closed to follow COVID-19 federal guidelines, the Virginia G. Piper Branch underwent a refresh, inside and out. The landscaping was cleaned up and the building’s exterior was refreshed. On the inside, everything from the bulletin boards to the paint on the walls was scrubbed, reworked, painted, and updated—with an eye to the kids the Club serves.

“We wanted our members to know that while we were closed we were thinking about them and preparing for them to come back,” said Deidra Neitz, the Club’s Youth Development Supervisor. “We wanted this place to be exciting and filled with hope for the future—something we all need right now.”

The Virginia G. Piper Branch has served youth in the Scottsdale Ranch area after school and during school breaks since it first opened in 1991.

While the Club closed at the end of March and throughout April, staff kept busy cleaning, organizing and planning for a busy summer camp when Club members occupy the building from 7:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. during the week.

“We had a lot of time to plan, so we pulled out all the stops to make sure we have a summer camp everyone will remember,” says Ashley Yee, the Club’s Program Coordinator.

To help fill the gap between the school year, the Club is incorporating reading and literacy activities and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) projects into weekly summer programming. The Club’s youth development staff focus on high yield, hands-on programming to keep kids and teens engaged, learning, and at the same time, having fun.

While the building itself has stood for 29 summers, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale used down time to make everything new this time around—from the program to the paint on the walls.

Palm Tree Trimming & Bulk Trash As I write this article, we are in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic and are still in a very unpredictable time and do not know what the future looks like.

you have palm trees on your property and have not scheduled trimming with your landscaper or tree trimmer, now is the time to do so. Unless unusual circumstances exist, the expectation is that all palms need to be trimmed by August 15th. If you are unable to meet that goal, please contact our office.

Please keep the City of Scottsdale bulk trash service schedule in mind when planning the tree trimming. If you have your trees trimmed and you are not within the placement and pick weeks, your trimmer/landscaper must haul away the trimmings. You cannot leave the trimmings in the street or on your property where they are visible.

One thing I can predict about the future at this time, is palm trees blooming and needing to be trimmed.

Per the SRCA guidelines bulk trash items and landscape debris may be placed, no more, than five (5) days before the scheduled week of pick up. Please see the June thru September 2020 schedule below.

Long time Valley residents know this is the time of year palm trees grow seed pods and fruit. We all know this annual occurrence can be messy and unsightly. I can attest that the calls to the office increase substantially regarding untrimmed palms and the mess they are creating for neighboring yards and pools. But we do want to warn about trimming trees before they bloom/seed. If that happens, you will need to have them trimmed again when they do bloom/seed.

City of Scottsdale Collection Services Upcoming Weeks of Brush Collection: June 22nd & July 27th The earliest items can be placed out is the Wednesday prior to the week of pickup and must be placed out no later than 5:00 am on Monday the week of the scheduled pick up. Residents, please be considerate of your neighbors - do not put your items out before the designated dates. Please be patient as the City has all week to pick-up in our area.

NOTICES FROM THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE: Please separate your brush and bulk pickup into two piles – one for green waste and one for everything else. The piles will be picked up by separate trucks during your designated brush and bulk pickup week. *Please refrain from placing trash containers or bulk trash where it blocks the sidewalk and would prevent pedestrians or wheelchair bound residents from passing along the sidewalk.

Attention Lake Residents: The SRCA Board of Directors has approved a Watercraft Tow Policy to charge $75.00 to homeowners who require their boats to be towed or rescued. This is to cover the cost of SRCA labor and use of equipment. This service is provided on a staff available basis only. If you are leaving for the summer, please make sure to loosen your dock chains or ropes that secure your boat, allowing for your boat to rise with the levels of the lake during a storm. This helps protect your boat and dock in case of another active monsoon season.

Also, we’d like to suggest that if you know a neighbor who stays in town for the summer that SRCA can contact in the event we are unable to get a hold of you in regards to your boat, please call the SRCA office at (480) 860-2022 to give us their contact information. Please make sure we have your current contact information such as phone number and email address.

Architectural Information available on www.scottsdaleranch.org Did you know that we have everything you want to know or need to know on our website to help you create your submittal for architectural approval? On the main website page www. scottsdaleranch.org, there is a red, white and blue house logo that says “Plan My Project”. Just click on this picture and it will take you to the architectural page. I will help break it down for you.

In the first section, you can access the Architectural Rules and Guidelines, the architectural application and the Dumpster/ POD/Portable Restroom application. These are the main items people look for on the website. However, if you go further, you will find that you will become well prepared to create a submittal that can be processed easily without the need for follow up questions.

This section is followed by the ever-popular Neighborhood Character Studies. We have them for many of the communities.

These Character Studies are an amazing asset to help you know what Architectural elements exist in your community. It helps to guide you to understand the theme of your individual commu-

nity and what ideas you can incorporate into your home.

The next section, project checklists is so very important. The project checklists supplied here will help you create a focused and complete submittal so it can be processed efficiently and expediently. You will find that in every list, we require a picture of your home as seen from across the street. Yes, it is all outlined in the checklists. We have almost every project created in a checklist to help you create your complete submittal.

The paint project checklist is magic! If you click on the word “Paint” a world of information opens up for you. We have the Dunn Edwards and the Sherwin Williams links so you can see all the color palettes for the single-family subdivisions and the various sub associations of Scottsdale Ranch. When you decide that you want to paint your home, did you know that you are required to submit for approval even if you are using the same colors? Please be aware that some colors are no longer available and are not grandfathered. Yes, the process requires submittal to Scottsdale Ranch Community Association first for approval and then submit for the approval of the sub association, if applicable.

The more information you give us with your architectural application, the easier and quicker we can have a decision.

Some applications can be approved on a staff level and can have a quicker turn around. Others that must go to the SRCA Architectural Committee, require you to submit a minimum of two weeks prior to the committee meeting date. These dates are available on our website.

Home & Landscape The Landscape in the Summer

It’s summer in Scottsdale and your landscape is feeling much like we are…hot and tired. Summertime is not the time to do a lot of major projects within the landscape, but ensure the irrigation system to stressed turf, trees, plants and f lowers is being managed correctly. Water is the lifeblood of our desert landscapes and with the winter and spring rainfall, we have banked some muchneeded gallons of water to be used at this time of year.

IRRIGATION Turf – water turf areas early in the morning to prevent evaporation in the heat of the day. The key to watering turf is to get the water to where the roots are for Bermuda turf, 6 inches below the surface of the soil. Use a screwdriver to see if you can easily penetrate to the handle when sticking it into the turf areas. If you can, you are watering to the proper depth. Irrigate turf four times per week and check the depth of penetration for best results. Fertilize with a balanced blend every other month throughout the summer to provide nutrients to the roots and blades of your grass and cease fertilization in August to prepare for over-seeding in the fall.

Plants – water plants to a depth of 1 foot for 3 days per week for best results. Again, encourage root growth to go deeper is the key to avoid the hottest soil temperatures near the surface. Plants bloom and provide additional seed pods more readily if they are somewhat starved for water as a survival mechanism for each species. Wilting of the leaves is a sign the plant is not receiving enough water. Adjust irrigation weekly after monitoring the health of the plants.

Annual flowers – summer in Arizona is the toughest on f lowers due to the shallow roots of annuals. Water to a depth of 4 inches. Potted annuals may require you to check the moisture levels by hand to be sure they are wet enough. Water early in the morning and resist the urge to water in the middle of the day as the leaves tend to wilt during the hottest part of the day.

Managing water during the summer is an art to be mastered around your landscapes. Water early mornings before the heat of day as this will allow your landscape to have that deep drink before the heat hits them. Flush salts through the root zones of your plants will help to encourage deeper root growth and a healthier environment for growth. Take advantage of any rainfall we may get during June and July by shutting the irrigation system down for a day or two. June is traditionally our driest month in Arizona with very low humidity. Watering smart in June will set you up for a successful summer and allow your landscapes to thrive during this challenging time of year.

Trees - try to water your trees to a depth of 3 feet to encourage root growth to stay in the cooler part of the soil and f lush salts through the root zone. Water trees twice per week and run the zone for your trees long enough to achieve the proper depth of penetration. You can use a piece of rebar to check if you are getting the proper depth. MONSOON SEASON! Monsoon season is quickly approaching! It is important to remember that these storms come up quickly and can be severe.

During this time of year it is important to prepare your home for the storms; especially if you are planning on leaving town for any amount of time.

• Make sure to trim trees so that they are away from windows and roofs. A thin tree canopy will help prevent limb breakage and uprooting.

COVID-19 Safety Tips

By the time you receive this publication, I hope that we are all back to our normal lives and are enjoying each day as we did before COVID-19 took over. With that, I also hope that you are able to find some time to take a vacation and decompress.

Below are some tips and reminders while traveling.

It’s been a challenging time for everyone over the past few months. In one way or another, we have all felt the effects of Covid-19 on our lives as well as the lives of our families and friends. It is so important to follow the guidelines as directed by our local, state, and federal leaders. There are many aspects of our lives that will be changed as a result of this pandemic to include the manner in which we travel. There are some guidelines that don’t change over time. So, as we all attempt to get back into our summer routines, to include out-of-town vacations, here are a few tips to do it safely: 1. Make sure that your home appears lived in. Put your lights on a timer and keep your blinds and curtains closed. Have a neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers. Make sure that your lawn is maintained while you are away.

2. Make a list of credit card numbers and phone numbers for the card companies just in case you lose one. Let your credit card companies know that you are leaving so that the purchases that you make while on vacation are not f lagged as fraudulent.

3. Consider leaving your tablets and laptops at home. Trust me, I understand how convenient those items are when traveling with children, but it is one more expensive item that could be lost or stolen. Travel as lightly as possible.

Cash, credit cards, passports, and cell phones can be carried in fanny packs or other totes…just make sure that the strap is made of material that is not easily broken and/or cut. If you aren’t fashionable enough to wear a fanny pack, place your wallet in your front pocket instead of your back pocket.

4. Never leave your bags and belongings unattended. Not only does leaving your baggage unattended draw the attention of Airport Security Officers, it also makes an easy target for criminals. Travelers at airports, train stations, bus terminals, boat docks and car rental areas are especially vulnerable due to those being places with a lot of activity and confusion…and often a lot of stress.

5. When checking into a hotel room, make sure to do the obvious. Always lock the door and secure the safety chain.

Check adjoining doors and all windows to ensure they are locked. Also, have at least two exit routes in mind in case of an emergency. Many hotel rooms are equipped with a safe in the room. Use it to keep your valuables safe when you are away from the room.

6. Talk with your family about whom to call and what to do in case they get lost or another emergency arises while you are on vacation. When traveling with kids, bring along an updated photo of each child—in case you become separated from them.

Remove the pot from the heat, cover, and let it stand at room temperature until cool.

Blend the strawberries and syrup together then strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove the solids.

INSTRUCTIONS: Add the rum, strawberry simple syrup, lemon juice, and basil leaves in a cocktail shaker or mason jar filled with ice.

Shake then pour into a glass.

Top the glass with soda water and garnish with strawberries and basil.

If you want to sugar the rims of your glasses, do it first.

Pour some sugar onto a plate, run a cut lemon over the rim of the glass then dip the wet rim into the sugar.
