Farewell Monsoons!

Tips for Protecting Your Identity during the Holidays

Wow, what a monsoon season we had. While Arizona desperately needed the rain, we could have taken it in smaller doses and without all the wind. In looking at some of the videos, it looked like a hurricane was approaching. Water was churning under the Shea bridge into Lake Serena, boat docks were under water, trees were down, and branches strewn across the landscape and streets.

The Scottsdale Ranch Community Association (SRCA) wants to thank our residents for their assistance and patience during the monsoon storms. In midAugust, our community was hit hard. In a matter of one week’s time, we sustained the loss of over 100 trees just in the SRCA common areas, and at the same time, many of our sub associations felt the same wrath. What a shame to lose all those trees but there was a small light at the end of the tunnel. SRCA had insurance that covered a portion of our damage through a “Wind and Storm” rider.

Replacement of trees began in late September and will continue into October.

I would like to give a shout out to our landscape company, Service Direct Landscape (SDL), who worked diligently to address the downed trees and branches. The landscape supervisors from SDL came out on the night we were hit the hardest and started moving trees from the streets and sidewalks right away to keep our community safe. We appreciate your continued partnership and dedication. Kudos to Terry in our building & lake department who came out to assist. And last, but not least, thank you to the SRCA office staff for fielding all the calls and assisting our residents.

During the series of storms, Lake Serena took in an enormous amount of water.

Lake Serena was built as part of the Maricopa County Flood Control Plain and is designed to take in runoff water from the north, west and east. The water then f lows to the south out through the SR Park which acts as a catch basin. Our office received calls wondering why SRCA did not pump the water out faster.

The lake was designed to allow the water to f low naturally out of the park along Via Linda then diverting to the south into the Salt River-Pima Maricopa Indian Community. There is not a mechanism nor are we allowed to take the water out of the lake any quicker. Please remember, the lake system did exactly what it is designed to do; take in water from the McDowell Mountains and channel it to the south.

Lakefront residents who have boats moored to your docks, it is important that you add some slack on your boat tie downs/chains to allow for the high-water levels; otherwise, they will break. Our building and lake staff spent a lot of man hours recovering boats that broke off in the storms. If you are out of town during monsoon seasons, be sure to ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your property.

Identity theft is a problem any time of the year. But, while consumers are focused on giving during the holidays, crooks are focused on taking. If there’s one thing consumers don’t need, it is dealing with identity theft during the holidays. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) offers the following tips to help consumers protect themselves during the busy holiday season. (1) Be aware of your surroundings. Sidewalks and malls will be crowded and shoppers will be distracted—the perfect combination for a pick-pocket. If someone bumps into you, don’t assume it was an accident. Women should clutch purses closely at their side or in front of them with the wallet hidden at the bottom. Men should stow wallets in an inside coat pocket. (2) Don’t carry large sums of cash.

Charge your purchases or use a debit card. Just remember that credit cards offer some protections that debit cards don’t. When you use a credit card, you can dispute a purchase before paying for it. With a debit card, the money is removed from your account at the time of the purchase. A thief can wipe out your checking or savings account before you ever realize the theft has taken place. (3) Guard your PIN number at the ATM. Be aware of anyone lurking around the ATM, and if someone is standing too close, simply ask him or her to step back. Thieves can also install devices that read your information at the ATM without you knowing it. If you notice anything unusual about the ATM, use a different one, and report what you’ve seen to the bank. (4) Don’t let your credit card out of your sight.

Unscrupulous clerks or waiters can copy your card information or swipe your card into a second card reader and later make a new credit card for themselves. Worse yet, they can sell your information to an organized crime ring.

(5) Lighten your wallet. Remove anything from your wallet that you don’t absolutely need to have with you. That way, if someone is successful in stealing it, they won’t get as much. Never carry your Social Security card with you, but check other cards that might use your SS# as an identifier. If you’re not going to be using your checkbook, leave it at home. (6) Make copies of your credit cards. Copy both sides of all your cards. If you lose your wallet, you’ll have easy access to all of your account numbers and phone numbers, allowing you to alert your bank immediately.

(7) Keep up with all receipts. Not only will you need them to make returns easily, but crooks are very interested in stealing the information they contain. Never stuff the receipts into your car visor or leave them exposed in any way. (8) Open your credit card statements as soon as they arrive. Check the bill for any unauthorized purchases.

Even better, keep a watchful eye on your accounts by going online and reviewing your accounts each week.

immediately to your bank. Doing so will likely remove any payment responsibility you might have for fraudulent purchases. (9) Secure all personal information even while at home. Unfortunately, many times an ID thief is someone we know. During the holidays, you may have guests in your home.

Remove temptation by putting personal information out of sight. (10) Consider signing up for a credit monitoring service.

Such services alert you via email anytime there is an inquiry or other activity to your credit report. In other words, if someone tries to open an account in your name, you’ll know about it. Such services are offered by all of the major credit reporting bureaus, and could be money well-spent. (11) Order your credit report. Consumers are allowed one free credit report every 12 months from each of the three bureaus. Order a report now from one bureau, and order another one in January from a different bureau. This will give you a good snapshot of activity and will alert you to anything unusual.

In spite of all your efforts, if you are victimized by ID theft, contact an NFCC Member Agency for help. Their certified counselors can walk you through the steps to recovery.

Board Briefs August 28, 2018 Board of Directors Meeting • Minimum Setbacks for Trees - Revised language was adopted for tree setback requirements for front and rear yards to address encroachment issues.

• Shade Structure Setbacks – Setback for shade structures in zero lot line properties was reduced to 5’.

• Storm Damage – Board approved the filing of an insurance claim for storm damage sustained on August 12, 2018.

• Election Policies – Election policies and procedures were amended to reflect electronic voting.

Employee Spotlight Meet Sonja Perez SRCA Homeowner Liaison Sonja became a part of the SRCA staff in March 2016. She grew up in Ames, Iowa, graduated from Iowa State University and moved to Arizona in 1992. Sonja has a strong customer service background and has spent 13 years in the HOA industry managing a mixed portfolio of single family homes and condominium communities. She holds certifications with the Arizona Association of Community Managers (AACM) and the Community Associations Institute (CAI). Sonja has proudly watched her son begin college this year and she looks forward to continuously watching his success in the future.

What is Sonja’s favorite thing about working at SRCA? “My co-workers. I also like the unpredictability of working on-site at an HOA. Everyday is different and an opportunity to meet different people and learn something new.”

Here are some fun facts about Sonja: • She likes to go to Vegas and play blackjack.

• Her first car was a yellow 1973 VW bug.

• She has been skydiving.

• She won 1st place in a goldfish racing tournament.

City of Scottsdale Collection Services Upcoming Weeks of Brush Collection: October 1st and October 29th, No pickup in November, December 3rd The earliest items can be placed out is the Wednesday prior to the week of pickup and must be placed out no later than 5:00 am on Monday the week of the scheduled pick up. Residents, please be considerate of your neighbors - do not put your items out before the designated dates. Please be patient as the City has all week to pick-up in our area.

NOTICES FROM THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE: Please separate your brush and bulk pickup into two piles – one for green waste and one for everything else. The piles will be picked up by separate trucks during your designated brush and bulk pickup week. *Please refrain from placing trash containers or bulk trash where it blocks the sidewalk and would prevent pedestrians or wheelchair bound residents from passing along the sidewalk.

Overseeding

In Arizona it is common practice to overseed Bermuda grass turf with a suitable cool season winter grass. This provides a green cover when the Bermuda grass would otherwise be winter dormant (brown). See below: The proper procedure for successful overseeding involves: (1) Proper treatment of the Bermuda grass (prior to and during overseeding).

(2) Proper choice of overseed grass.

(3) Proper execution of preparing the seed bed, mulching, post irrigation, fertilizer and mowing practices.

Seeding: Overseeding should take place when the daytime temperatures are 78-85° maximum and the nighttime low temperatures are 65° or less. This will allow quick germination of the overseed, with little competition from a Bermuda grass which should have minimal mechanical disturbance done to it.

About 4-5 weeks before overseeding, stop fertilizing the lawn completely. At two weeks before overseeding, cut the amount of water normally applied to the lawn by 50-60%. This will trick the grass to store winter food and slow its growth.

Scalping: For actual overseeding, slowly scalp the lawn by lowering the mowing height 1/4” at a time.

Mow 60% to 70% of the grass height off. This will take 3-4 passes with the mower, each at a progressively lower mowing height. Remove the clippings with a bag-catcher lawn mower, or rake them up.

Application: Apply half of the seed, each in two directions, using either a rotary or drop spreader.

Seed rates for all three of these ryegrasses should range between 12-14 lbs. per thousand square feet. After seeding, drag a large leaf rake upside down several directions across the lawn. If possible, drag a weighted carpet across the lawn to drive the seed down in the canopy.

Fertilize: Follow by topdressing with composted steer manure, or other cost effective weed-free mulch. Apply about 1/4” of manure by use of a wide coal shovel in a slinging motion.

Roll the lawn in two directions.

Water: Irrigate four times a day at 6:00 am, 10:00 am, 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Do this until the grass emerges and is about one inch out of the soil. Then irrigate once per day, apply about 1/4” of water. When the grass is 2.0 inches high, mow it to a height of 1 1/2 inches with a sharp bladed mower. The turf must not be wet, or the seedlings may be pulled out. Follow by fertilizing the lawn with 1.0 pound of nitrogen from a quick release source, preferably which has phosphorous also.

Mowing: The first mowing should occur at the 10th to 14th day after germination. Follow the 30% rule for mowing—never remove more than 30% of the leaf at one time. This will keep you from pulling out your new young seedlings. Your first cut will probably be at a height of 3⁄4” to 1”. If prefer your lawn a little longer, then you may not need to mow for 14 - 21 days.

LANDSCAPE DEBRIS BULK TRASH After the disastrous storms that hit the Ranch this early fall/late summer we saw an incredible amount of landscape debris placed out for bulk trash pick up, which was understandable. It was very sad to see the downed trees and broken limbs around the property not to mention the property damage some residents suffered.

SRCA has been lenient regarding the early placement of this debris for bulk trash due to the circumstances of the storms; however we would like to remind residents moving forward of a few basics regarding bulk trash.

• Bulk trash is for items that are too large for the regular weekly pick up container. Many times, I see trash bags and items at the curb that could easily fit in the trash containers.

• Bulk trash, per the Scottsdale Ranch rules, shall not be place out where it is visible to neighboring properties or the street more than 5 days before the week of pick up begins. For example; The next week of pick up for bulk trash is scheduled for Monday, October 1st, placement for that week’s pick up can begin September 26th. Placing trash out early is a finable offense. Below is the fine schedule for bulk trash violations.

Our goal is to educate our residents so the bulk trash pick up provided by the City can be an added value for residents and not a weeks long eyesore. We appreciate your effort and cooperation.

LOOKING FROM THE OUTSIDE IN With the needed rain the monsoon season brought to the Valley it has also brought an explosion of growth to our beautiful vegetation. During heavy growing times please consider your rear yard and how additional growth or lack of trimming may be affecting the view from the other side of the wall. We ask residents who share a wall with a neighbor or a common wall along a street to be conscious of how your landscape can negatively impact those on the other side. Violation notices will be sent to owners who back common areas whose trees and plants are growing over the common wall or encroaching sidewalks. This goes for Scottsdale Ranch as well, if you have trees or plants from the common area that are encroaching your property, please let us know so we can take care of it.

BULK TRASH No Courtesy Notice Required Violation Notice - $150 fine Subsequent Notices - $150 fine Continuing Violations - $150 fine per week left out • If you have scheduled trimming of your landscape and the trimming takes place outside of the approved bulk trash placement time, your landscaper MUST take the debris with them.

Additionally, if you see anyone dropping debris on the side of the street please try to get a description of the vehicle or license plate number. We have all seen random piles of debris laying in the street. Those piles cost SRCA residents money because we have to pay the community landscapers to remove the debris from the street. Be sure your landscaper is not dumping debris over your back wall into common as you will be responsible and charged for the clean up.

• Lastly, please make sure you are not blocking the sidewalk with the bulk trash you place out. Please stack items neatly, parallel to the street on your front property line. The piles should not exceed 10 feet long by 6 feet wide by 4 feet tall. Please place the bulk waste and green waste piles at least three feet apart from each other.

Fetching Dog began in 2005 and originated as a Mobile Grooming Salon. I ran it as a mobile salon until September 2017 when my husband, Bryce, and I purchased the shop previously known as Kosmo’s Dog House to expand my services to include my strong passion for pet nutrition. I have researched and advocated a fresh food diet for all pets for the past 15-20 years. I learned to groom as a volunteer at the Animal Welfare League back in 1997 and right away began to notice the impact that poor quality nutrition had on the pets skin, coat and overall health. As my mentor and I began learning and looking deeper into fresh foods we began to see so much improvement that it was undeniable and we were able to save several dogs that were going to be put to sleep for extreme skin infections and chronic ear problems. I have continued to do work with these cases and expand my knowledge base in every way I can over the past 20 years. I am thrilled to have a shop at the Mercado at Scottsdale Ranch where I have begun to meet my neighbors and share all that I have learned so that I can continue helping more pets benefit from fresh nutrition.

Here at Laguna the seasons are changing and we are welcoming cooler weather. The kids are enjoying playing outside a little more, and our learning is continuing to grow. We have had a great start to the year, and look forward to our continued educational journey!

As we look toward the fall we have some fun community events coming up. Friday, September 28th is our annual Spirit Night with games and fun for the whole family. We are off for a week October 8-12 for fall break but when we return our fifth graders will head up north to payson for a three day camp where they will connect with nature while engaging in STEAM based activities. Finally we have our annual STEAM night Thursday November 8th where students and families will interact and engage with STEAM projects around campus.

When I’m out in the community, citizens will often stop me and ask about speeding in their neighborhood. As you can probably imagine, our patrol officers are busy throughout the day responding to calls for service. When they do have some time to dedicate to traffic problems like speeding, they generally focus their efforts on the intersections with the most car crashes or on our most heavily traveled streets. With the number of residential neighborhoods that we have in our city, it’s virtually impossible for our officers to conduct traffic safety in all of these areas.

Because of this, it is important for all of us to take it upon ourselves to be safe as we drive on these residential streets. It is normal for us to lose track of our speed while we drive in our neighborhood. The roads become very familiar, since we use them every day and we are not as aware of our speed as we might be in areas that we are less familiar with. But we need to remember that these small streets are filled with people out for a walk, children playing and bicyclists out for a ride. Sometimes these people might do something unexpected or they might be difficult to see. By reducing our speed, drivers greatly increase their chances of stopping in time before tragedy strikes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the total stopping distance for a vehicle traveling at 20 mph is 63 feet.

A vehicle traveling at 40 mph will need about 164 feet, nearly triple the distance! Those extra 100 feet could be the difference between life and death.

Please keep this in mind as you are coming and going from your residential neighborhood. Remember to slow down, stay alert and drive carefully.

The Car Club

Is it my imagination, confirmation bias perhaps or is that old American institution The Car Club more popular than ever? Now, after thirty plus years of raising children, Barbara and I find ourselves with time to breath, look around and smell the Saguaros. Soon the last child will move out and we’ll change the locks, turn off the lights and never answer the door EVER again. For those of you young parents reading this wondering what the heck I’m talking about? Google “boomerang generation”.

Back to Car Club’s - after what seemed like a lifetime of driving Chrysler mini-vans, Hondas and Toyotas, Barbara and I looked at each other and said SPORTS CARS and not just any sport’s cars.

For years we dreamed of owning 2 older BMW Z 4’s. You’ve seen them, a two- seater with zero trunk space and a naturally aspirated 340 horse straight 6 under the bonnet that drinks gas like a 74 Lincoln Continental. You only make the mistake of taking this baby to Costco once as the boot holds 2 hot dogs, a frozen yogurt and a small soda. Now before I go any further I do want to say for the record that my daily driver is a 7 year old Honda CRV that I LOVE dearly, has a million miles on the clock, it’s a joy to drive, costs 28 dollars a year to maintain so don’t be sending me hate mail when you’re done reading this, okay?

We joined the National Car Club and discovered it wasn’t quite the right fit. A younger crowd interested in racing, tuning, wrenching and autocross prone to using the word “dude” more often than we’re used to and when I’d reply “the dude abides” they’d give that confused look. Clearly these young folks have yet to see The Big Lebowski. We did however meet a good many people that remain friends to this day. So, we started our own car group called The BMW Social Club located right here in Scottsdale Ranch and have since organized 3 Cars & Coffee events. Last Sunday August 12th there were 31 beautiful BMW automobiles (1 Audi) and over 50 residents & enthusiasts laughing, smiling and interacting like the smart phone had yet to be invented. Last and certainly not least we partnered up with our neighbors in The Mercado Crave Grounds Coffee and the good folks at Jackson Roskelley Wealth Advisors here on The Ranch treated us all to coffee and donuts.

We love our Community and have proudly called it home for 11 years. Now that the children are all grown up, we find ourselves looking for yet another way to have fun and include our Scottsdale Ranch neighbors. Barbara and I think we found it with the creation the BMW Social Club and we encourage you to watch the SRCA website and Facebook page for another Cars & Coffee event at The Mercado. The Insect Without Boundaries – Mosquitos Supplied by Burns Pest Elimination www.burnspestelimination.com

While the moisture of the Arizona Monsoon season is greatly needed and appreciated, some of the biproducts are not so welcomed. The biggest being an overnight explosion of Mosquitoes.

Here are a few interesting facts about “The insect without boundaries”.

• Mosquitoes have been around since the Jurassic period.

That makes them about 210 million years old.

• Only females bite. The female needs blood to help her eggs develop. Both male and female feed mainly on fruit and plants.

• The bumps from bites are caused by saliva. While the proboscis draws blood, it also pumps in saliva containing a numbing agent and an anti-coagulant. Most people have allergic reactions to the saliva, causing the area around the bite to swell and itch.

• Female mosquitoes can lay 300- 400 eggs at a time.

Usually, the eggs are laid on the surface of stagnant water.

• Drinking beer makes you more attractive to mosquitoes.

If mosquitoes and humans have anything in common, it’s that they both like beer. A study from the IRD Research Center in France found that mosquitoes are 15% more likely to bite people who have drank beer.

There are plenty of things that you can do as a home owner to take back your outdoor space from these pesky bugs. Here are some suggestions on things things to check around your home.

• Reduce water holding spots in grass and other high moisture areas. Cut back on your watering during rainy times. Most mosquitos in Arizona make their breeding zones in very wet soil or standing water.

• Check your yard and house twice month for leaky hose bibs, leaky pool equipment (fix immediately) and any other sources of standing or stagnate water. Mosquitoes can lay hundreds of eggs in a bottle cap full of water.

• Close unused bath and shower drains to reduce indoor breeding sites

• Look for excess moisture in f lower pots and planting areas. Use ½” or larger yard granite spread 2 inches deep on top of these surface to increase the soils ability to dry and stop the insect from reaching moist soil.

• Check plant container overf low trays. Make sure they are holding zero water within 2 hours of watering cycle or rain.

• Check yard for open mulch piles like grass waste, leaf build up or other organic deposits. remove or containerize the materials until they can be disposed of.

• Look at gutter systems and grade slopes. Repair if any water is being held against the structure or puddles are developing.

People often ask if the ponds and lakes are the cause of infestations.

In most cases no, as we use sun reducing products, plant growth retardant procedures and fish like bluegill and others to devour beneficial food sources. People ask about the water runoff or retention areas. Yes, these are areas of concern as they might need to be treated, drained and addressed within a few days of retaining water. Failing to address these areas will almost guarantee a mosquito outbreak to the community.

There are also many sprays, fogs (both organic and non-organic) and growth regulators that can be used in these areas of concern.

Including your own yard. Area ULV treatments done early morning or late evenings can reduce breeding female mosquitoes while reducing risks to beneficial pollinators.

Arizona’s answer to National Night Out unites communities to create safer neighborhoods. Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods takes place October 20th!

October is an exciting time in Arizona neighborhoods. It’s time for the annual GAIN Night! GAIN stands for Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods and serves as our version of National Night Out. While communities around the country gather in August to celebrate, we are still experiencing triple digit temperatures and it’s not reasonable to be having block parties.

Rather than melting with your neighbors in August, most Valley cities, including Scottsdale will be celebrating GAIN Night on October 20th, 2018.

Neighborhoods around the City are asked to host block parties on that day. The events are meant to increase neighbor communication and raise awareness of City programs and departments. As a block 28

party coordinator, you can request block party supplies and special guests through the City’s website. Special guests include the Mayor & City Council, Police, Fire, Solid Waste (garbage trucks!), Parks & Recreation, Libraries, Code Enforcement and the Citizen Service Office. Representatives make visits at the parties to answer questions about their department and distribute information about programs they offer to residents. It is not necessary to be a recognized Neighborhood Watch group to participate.
