From the Gala Ch airs Hello Fellow Lovers of Art, What a crazy year we have all experienced, and more than ever, I believe we all desire connection with each other and sharing in the gratitude for life’s joys. With this as our hope, my dear friend Oscar De las salas and I would like to invite you to a very special ARTrageous Gala. The theme for this virtual treat was thoughtfully chosen to be A Love Story, with the core focus on our shared love of art and our shared love of community. I know for me, I cannot imagine my life without the joy, connection, and expansion that art has provided me, both as the creator and the participant. It is through art that we create bridges of understanding, widen our perspective, and truly elevate our soul’s journey. Scottsdale Arts has been a leader in creating this experience for our community for decades through its many branches: Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, SMoCA, Scottsdale Public Art, and Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation. And let us not forget favorite events like the Scottsdale Arts Festival and Canal Convergence, an annual tradition of tech-savvy art installations celebrating sustainability. From the incredible world-class exhibitions at our stunning Museum to the diverse talent presented at the Center to the more than 100 fantastic art pieces scattered throughout the city, our community has been greatly elevated on a national and global scale by what this organization tirelessly provides us. On Saturday, April 10, we all have an amazing opportunity to join in a celebration with many fantastic artistic treats in store, hosted by the beautiful Cary Pena, while allowing us to provide our continued support to this treasure of an organization. This virtual platform will be full of visual and audible gems, and you will also be the first to know the new thrilling announcement presented by our visionary leader, Gerd Wuestemann. From the President a nd CEO of Scottsdale Arts Dear Scottsdale Arts Friends, Welcome to a virtual ARTrageous Gala 2021 here at Scottsdale Arts—where art is love. It’s been a wild ride these past 12 months. While we wish we could greet you in person, we are excited about this splendid program and the promise of much brighter days ahead. I am proud to share with you that Scottsdale Arts is coming out of the pandemic with great strength. We are on financially solid footing and have proven to be extremely resilient. Our entire staff has remained intact, and we have worked hard to pivot to the virtual realm and to produce a limited fall and full spring season. Both Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) are fully open with distancing measures, mask requirements, and timed entry in place. Throughout the pandemic, Scottsdale Public Art has continued to install new artworks throughout the city. Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation served thousands of students and other members of the community through virtual engagement. We produced a distanced edition of Canal Convergence, enjoyed by 100,000 visitors in November. Only our acclaimed Scottsdale Arts Festival fell victim to the crisis. As we emerge from this difficult period, we are focused on future growth. A renovation of our campus will begin soon. Our vision to turn the Center’s Stage 2 into a jewel box theater is quickly becoming a reality. And we have shaped a near-term vision to increase SMoCA’s size, build education spaces, and create a proper gateway to our campus. I am humbled to say that Scottsdale Arts has been a partner to the city in distributing more than $1.2 million in aid to other Scottsdale-based arts organizations. Our resolve to stand for all cultural life across the city and to serve our community with equitable access to the arts for all has never been stronger. Three years ago, we shared with you a dream of a new Scottsdale Arts. Last year we took big steps toward making this dream a reality. Today, we are beginning to fulfill our promise and are proud to reclaim our place as a national arts leader. We would like to thank our long-standing partners at the city of Scottsdale: Mayor Ortega, the City Council, and the city staff. Also, a heartfelt thanks to our evergrowing Board of Trustees and Advisory Boards for their vision and belief that the arts are a vital and essential component of our community. ART is LOVE, and we sure LOVE to bring ART to you!

The ARTr ageous Gala Host Carey Peña
Carey Peña is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, television personality, podcast host, and the founder and CEO of Inspired Media 360. After working behind the scenes as a writer and producer, Carey became a main anchor at 3TV, covering some of the biggest breaking news stories, including the global war on terror, as well as local and national elections. Carey has also spent time in front of the camera, covering Hollywood red carpets, movie premieres, and fashion events, such as American Idol and Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. She’s worked on various TV shows as a host and contributor, including the nationally syndicated CBS show The Talk. An innovator when it comes to social media, Carey created her dream company at the intersection of tech and TV. Inspired Media 360 is a social-first shop that focuses on storytelling and content creation across platforms. Carey is a well-known emcee and public speaker and a true philanthropist. She lends her time to dozens of charitable causes, focusing on work that inspires positive change in our communities and across the country.
Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation The mission of Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation is to provide transformative and intentional arts experiences that unlock potential, ignite creativity, and foster empathy. This is accomplished through a broad scope of programming, including masterclasses and student matinees at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, programs at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), workshops in partnership with Scottsdale Public Art, artist residencies in local schools, exhibitions, and professional learning workshops that serve more than 45,000 students and adults annually.
VISIONS Each year, Visions brings together 42 high school art students from diverse Maricopa County high schools for a yearlong series of activities designed to cultivate artistic skills, collaboration, and civic engagement. Celebrating its 21st year in 2021, the program is based on a strong community partnership between Scottsdale Arts and participating schools that represent economically, ethnically, and culturally diverse communities. To date, more than 1,000 students have graduated from the program. Visions promotes the special qualities of arts education to promote racial tolerance, multicultural understanding, and friendship among suburban and inner-city high school students who may not have access to these experiences otherwise. Students meet monthly throughout the school year for discipline-based workshops, college and university visits, and museum field trips. They work together on collaborative arts projects, participate in communication workshops and diversity discussions, and exhibit their own work. As students learn new artistic techniques, they also develop conflict-resolution skills and build friendships that transcend cultural, racial, and socioeconomic barriers. These skills are all utilized back at school and, in turn, create a stronger, more positive community environment. As a result, students are better prepared to successfully live and work in the future’s diverse society.
Scottsdale Public Art
The mission of Scottsdale Public Art is to make Scottsdale one of the most desirable communities in the country in which to live, work, and visit by incorporating art and design projects throughout. In 1985, the city of Scottsdale established Scottsdale Public Art with the goal to enhance the quality of life for its residents and visitors. Since then, more than 100 permanent and temporary public artworks have been commissioned throughout the community. Scottsdale’s program and projects have won local, regional, and national awards.
Canal Convergence Scottsdale Public Art and Canal Convergence are pleased to announce that CODAsummit: The Intersection of Art, Technology and Place is coming to Scottsdale during Canal Convergence 2021! CODAsummit is a three-day conference for artists, fabricators, and administrators to focus on the exciting ways creative professionals are incorporating technology to create artwork installations that are changing the ways we experience our environments. This year’s conference will be hosted by Scottsdale Public Art at the Scottsdale Arts Campus—Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA)—and will take place November 10–12, 2021, during the second half of Canal Convergence, November 5–14, 2021. ARTr ageous Augmented Reality Debut! One-Eyed Jack by John Randal Nelson Standing 26 feet high, One-Eyed Jack is a painted steel jackrabbit sculpture by Tempe-based artist John Randall Nelson. The 20,000-pound sculpture stands on the corner of Marshall Way and Indian School Road, welcoming residents and visitors to the art galleries, shops, and restaurants in Old Town Scottsdale’s Arts District. One-Eyed Jack stands as a reminder of Marshall Way’s history and a nod toward its future. Like Lewis Carroll’s fictional white rabbit, the sculpture beckons us to make the leap into Old Town Scottsdale, and now for the first time, into your home with augmented reality!

Visit Gala.ScottsdaleArts.org to download and print the One-Eyed Jack anchor symbol. Access your mobile device’s app store, download the Hoverlay app, and follow instructions to install the Hoverlay camera browser app on your mobile device. Please note: the app requires an augmented reality-capable device running iOS 13 or later or Android 7.0 or later.

Open the Hoverlay app. Make sure your phone is not on silent and that the volume is turned up. Be aware of your surroundings.

Search for the ScottsdalePublicArt channel to unlock the experiences. Press “Start” on the “One-Eyed Jack AR” slide. Wait for “100%” and press “Start.”

Set your anchor symbol (the image you printed) on a flat surface. Place your phone over the anchor symbol so that you see it on the screen.

Angle your phone into a vertical position and wait for the “100%” to view the AR experience. You can resize and rotate the sculpture by pinching your fingers on the screen. Enjoy!

Exclusive Virtual Musical Appear a nces Seth Rudetsky and Eva Noblezada The Seth Rudetsky Concert Series is beloved by our Broadway fans! Sirius XM Radio Star Seth Rudetsky hosts and music directs this acclaimed international concert series—each time sharing the stage with a new Broadway artist. This year’s season includes Eva Noblezada and Jeremy Jordan. Noblezada is one of Broadway’s finest young performers. She received her first Tony nomination at 21 years of age for starring in the title role of the revival of Miss Saigon. She also originated the lead role of Eurydice in Hadestown on Broadway, a performance for which she received her second Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, as well as a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Jake Shimabukuro Every major artist has that one defining album or performance, but for ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro, his entire career has been filled with such magical achievements. Since he first came to the world’s attention with his deeply beautiful and original take on George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” in a viral video that dominated YouTube in 2005, the Hawaiian-born Shimabukuro has virtually reinvented the four-string instrument, causing many to call him “the Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele.” Brooklyn Rider Hailed as “the future of chamber music” (Strings), Brooklyn Rider offers eclectic repertoire in gripping performances that continue to attract legions of fans and draw rave reviews from classical, world, and rock critics alike. In November, Brooklyn Rider will visit Scottsdale with award winning mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter.
Scottsdale Museum of Contempor ary Art (SMoCA)
Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is an artist and audience-centered institution that brings communities together under the shared philosophy that art has the power to engage our imaginations, challenge our perceptions, and inspire change. Opened in 1999, the Museum has established itself as a leader in the arts presenting innovative exhibitions and educational programs. Designed by award-winning architect Will Bruder, SMoCA’s minimalist building (an ingenious transformation of a former movie theater) has four galleries for showcasing rotating exhibitions and works from the Museum’s growing permanent collection, along with a fifth multi-use gallery space called SMoCA Lounge. Always on view is Knight Rise, a Skyspace by Arizona-based artist James Turrell—heralded internationally as one of the most significant artists of our time. SMoCA engages with emerging and established artists from around the world and from our own community to support new commissions and encourage dialogue about the art of our time. The result is a lively community space that is a laboratory for creative thinking and new ideas. By embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion as organizational values, SMoCA, together with creatives across platforms, promotes cross-cultural dialogue and fosters mutual understanding and respect. Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art champions creativity, innovation, and the vitality of the visual arts.
