WELCOME Dear Friends, When I wrote a similar letter a year ago, little did I know that our season would be upended and, for an entire year, we would operate under challenging circumstances. I am confident that this 2021–22 season will not be met by the same fate! Scottsdale Arts was very fortunate indeed: we were able to maintain our full-time staff throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and emerge in solid financial shape. As a result, we have been able to continue our work, remain largely open and—perhaps most importantly—produce our most diverse, expansive, and star-studded season yet. We are emerging brightly and ready to serve. Traditional highlights, such as our acclaimed Virginia G. Piper Concert Series and Broadway events, are joined by new centers of excellence, such as a wonderful global music program and an exploration of some of the finest musicians in the American roots program. Our Dance Series remains a highlight, presenting deeply engaging contemporary dance companies from around the world. Theatre enjoys a renewed presence with us this year, as does our family series, engaging parents and kids alike. We have stepped up our game with some of the world’s greatest jazz musicians and are featuring new and original programs throughout the season. Scottsdale Arts is dedicated to creating equitable access to the arts for all. We invite our community to join us for a much-needed dialogue about change. From community outdoor events to challenging presentations around racial justice, gender identity, and inclusion, we are proud to let our work and the work of local and national artists speak to this commitment. Of course, Scottsdale Arts is much more than performances. Please join us for extraordinary visual arts exhibitions at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), engage in a lifelong creative learning process through Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation, enjoy a 10-day celebration of light art at Canal Convergence with Scottsdale Public Art, or visit—while walking, biking, or driving—more than 100 public artworks across Scottsdale. I also ask that you consider supporting us as a Scottsdale Arts ONE Member, volunteer, or patron. We could not do it without you. Finally, one more exciting piece: in early fall of this year, we will embark on a $30 million renovation of our Scottsdale Civic Center campus. The project includes multiple outdoor stages in addition to much needed infrastructure and wayfinding updates. It will enable us to take more arts experiences outside and bring you extraordinary performances under a desert sky. This is just the beginning; from future renovations in our small theater space to new facilities and improvements, we are growing and making Scottsdale a true arts destination once again. Yes, there will be some dust in the process, but we hope you will all join us for the journey.

Sincerely, Dr. Gerd Wuestemann, President and CEO Scottsdale Arts

visionary voices get inspired

We should take a moment to acknowledge the land on which we gather. We are on the unceded and unsurrendered Indigenous homelands. We acknowledge the ancestors of the First Nations peoples of modern-day Arizona. The makeup of our current state is entirely shaped by these ancestors. In fact, the name “Arizona” comes from the word for “little spring” in the O’odham language. We also invest in the future of contemporary tribal members. As an arts and culture organization, it is our duty to uplift the artists and activists doing the work. We have been honored to have many visual artists and performers, representing numerous tribes, take part in Scottsdale Arts events and exhibitions through the years.
