DIRECTORS NOTE: Thank you to everyone that came out to see Arizona’s first Trolley Dances! We appreciate your energy, enthusiasm, and love of the arts! We are so happy to have this opportunity to dance outside in beautiful Scottsdale and to be collaborating with Scottsdale Arts! Thank you to Diandra Adamczyk, Abbey Messmer, Whitney Nelson, the production crew, volunteers, and all the folks who helped from the team to make this event a success! Thank you to Ollie the Trolley for participating in this adventure! Thank you to the talented and generous dancers and musicians and choreographers from Movement Source, Jukebox Family, Axé Capoeira Arizona, and San Diego Dance Theater, who all passionately brought work to share! A special shout out to Jean Isaacs who started Trolley Dances many years ago in California with San Diego Dance Theater and who generously shared with us so that we too could enjoy presenting this to Arizona audiences. We hope this is the first of many Trolley Dances! We are so pleased this vision has become a reality in this celebrative weekend of dance! COMPANY BIOS: THE MOVEMENT SOURCE DANCE COMPANY Founded in 1988, The Movement Source Dance Company is a nonprofit, multimedia modern dance company whose mission is to expand the audience for dance in Arizona by creating exciting, accessible dance works, education programs, and events. New works are generated each season to keep audiences and artists motivated, challenged, and interested. Many major performances are interpreted for the deaf community, maintaining the company’s commitment to that special population. Company members represent a broad spectrum of diverse talents and backgrounds that are continually enhanced each season through collaborations with artists from various media (visual artists, musicians, writers, videographers, and actors) to create exciting new works integrating their art forms with dance. The company is creative in its approach to choreography, communitybased education, and performances in theaters and nontraditional sites. The passion for dance, commitment to the community, and emphasis on education are obvious qualities and achievements of Movement Source.


DIRECTORS: Mary Anne Fernandez-Herding Mary Anne Fernandez-Herding is the director and founding member of The Movement Source Dance Company. Her professional background encompasses dance, arts administration, program development, choreography, and teaching. She currently chairs the Dance Department at Xavier College Preparatory where she established the program/curriculum in 2002. She holds a bachelor of fine arts in dance and secondary education from Arizona State University and a master of arts in dance/drama from the University of Arizona, specializing in dance for the deaf community. She recently created and implemented guiDANCE, a mentoring program for serious dance students to connect with touring professional dance artists. She is a native Arizonan and an active member of the local arts community. Herding enjoys the diversity each season brings and is grateful to be able to direct and dance with such an amazing, vivacious, and authentic group of dancers in Movement Source! Susan Pine-Harris Susan Pine-Harris holds a bachelor of fine arts in dance from the University of Arizona and a master of fine arts in dance from Arizona State University. Harris has been fortunate to be surrounded by a group of loving dancers for the past 30 years with the company. She has been privileged to work and dance with many choreographers who helped her continue to learn and grow as a dancer/ choreographer/ teacher/ woman, including Ellis Wood, Brad Garner, Fred Darsow, Mary Fitzgerald, Mary Ann Fernandez-Herding, Karen Schupp, and Chad Michael Hall, among many others. All these amazing people have come through the door of The Movement Source, and she is truly grateful for the opportunities she has with her dance family. SAN DIEGO DANCE THEATER San Diego Dance Theater is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit performing arts organization based in San Diego, California. Led by Executive Artistic Director Terry Wilson, the organization fervently believes in presenting meaningful and courageous performances year-round, as well as providing access to quality dance training to local students of all ages. In 1972, San Diego Dance Theater was founded by George Willis, professor emeritus of dance at San Diego State University. Willis’s goal was to bring joy, comedy, and theatricality to modern dance and to train young dancers. Jean Isaacs was appointed artistic director in 1997. Under Isaacs’s direction, San Diego Dance Theater earned its reputation as a company of professional dancers committed to unconventional and deeply courageous programming. Isaacs expanded access to the stage for dancers of many nationalities, races, ages, and physical abilities. San Diego Dance Theater’s current executive artistic director, Terry Wilson, aims to honor the company’s rich past while bringing the organization into a new phase of growth, curiosity, positivity, and diversity. San Diego Dance Theater is known for cross-border projects, summer dance workshops, and the yearly site-specific performance Trolley Dances™. JUKEBOX GROUND The Jukebox Family is a team of artists and students. Reigning out of The Jukebox Grounds in Mesa, Jukebox Family studies the history and foundation of street styles along with exploring different movement. They love to tell stories through creativity and inspire their audiences through their pieces. Jukebox Family strives to always be humble learners and hungry movement explorers. Whatchu reppin’ foo?! Instagram: @thejukeboxfam Facebook: @thejukeboxstudios Email: TheJukeboxStudios@gmail.com AXÉ CAPOEIRA ARIZONA Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art developed in the 1500s by African and Indigenous slaves in Brazil as a form of self-defense from their oppressors. It is marked by its agile and tricky movements that may be executed anywhere, from an upside-down position to a gravity defying kick. It has a strong acrobatic component in some styles and is always played with music. Axé Capoeira of Scottsdale is well known throughout greater Phoenix for laboring tirelessly to share the cultural richness of capoeira, sharing a positive message of respect, diversity, and community. Grande Mestre Barrao is the founder of Axé Capoeira International and his first Capoeira student in North America was Mestrando Jay “Camara,” who is the head teacher at Axé Capoeira Academy in Scottsdale.
