FLAMENCO INTIMO PROGRAM This October, Julia Chacón Flamenco Theater performs the fourth season of Flamenco Intimo, bringing renewed energy to Scottsdale through the power and fervor of flamenco. The 2021 series celebrates survival and tradition in an exploration of 75 years of Spanish dance in the Valley. International performers deliver rapid-fire footwork, passionate dance, virtuosic guitar, and the soul-stirring vocals emblematic of flamenco. The show captures the contemporaneity of flamenco while honoring the artists who paved the way for Spanish dance in Arizona.

SPANISH LEGACIES PROGRAM In Spanish Legacies, Julia Chacon Flamenco Theatre celebrates 75 years of Spanish Dance in the Valley. Performances honor four 20th century dance pioneers—Adelino Fernandez, Lydia Torea, Laura Moya, and Dini Román—and features works performed by their protégés and inspired by their influence. Spanish Legacies reveals generational cultural heritage in Arizona and pays tribute to the cultural contributions of these artists. The Spanish presence in North America left an indelible mark on the culture of the American Southwest. This influence permeated the performing arts, which became a conduit for cultural exchange. The Spanish Legacies program on October 29 and 30 will be followed by a 15-minute Q&A with the artists—plus, Spanish dance pioneers Lydia Torea and Dini Román—regarding how Spanish dance in the Valley has contributed to the arts in Arizona.

ARTISTS JULIA CHACÓN (Artistic Director) is the founder, director, and choreographer for Flamenco Theatre (founded in 2008). Chacón trained in the United States, and in Madrid and Seville, Spain, has performed across the United States and in Colombia, Mexico, and Spain. She was a finalist for the 2019 Arizona Governor’s Arts Award, for the 2019 Phoenix Mayor’s Arts Award, and was Resident Artist at the Musical Instrument Museum (a Smithsonian Affiliate) in 2019 and 2020. She toured throughout the United States with Carlota Santana Flamenco Vivo and Maria Benitez’s Teatro Flamenco and was a member of Jose Galvan’s cuadro in Seville, Spain.

In addition, she shared the stage with Carmen Ledesma, José Méndez, Jose Manuel Tudela, Andres Peña, Inmaculada Ortega, and others. She has produced 27 concerts in the Valley since 2014, presented dozens of arts education performances and workshops, and teaches in the private sector.

Chacón can be seen on the Travel Channel’s Santa Fe episode with Samantha Brown and in the TEDxLSU talk “Flamenco 101.” Her choreography was performed in the 50th anniversary celebration of the Shanghai Opera House. She was featured at the National Dance Education Organization National Conference in 2010 and her arts-education curriculum has been implemented in New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, and Arizona schools, touching the lives of thousands of children.

Her strongest influences include American artists Lydia Torea and Eva Enciñas Sandoval and Spanish artists Jose Galvan, El Ciro, Mario Maya, Carmen Ledesma, Rafaela Carrasco, and Manuel Reyes.

Francisca Nava (Dancer) began her flamenco training under Laura Moya in Phoenix. She was a formative member of Flamenco por la Vida under the direction of Angelina Ramirez and performed in Mujeres, directed by Yumi la Rosa. She performs regionally as guest artist and instructor with Chayito Champion in San Antonio, Texas. Nava has performed with Inspiración Flamenca since 2015. *Spanish Legacies performances only.

Misael Barraza Diaz (Musical Director) was born in 1990 in Sonora, Mexico. Barraza is hailed as among the most outstanding Mexican guitarists of his generation. Barraza holds a master’s degree from the Master Guitarra Alicante (Spain) and a second master’s degree from the University of Arizona, where he recently completed his doctorate in musical arts. Barraza has been awarded first place at international guitar competitions, such as the 12th Culiacán International Competition (2019, Mexico), 20th Annual Guitar Symposium and Competition (2019, United States), Wilson Center Guitar Competition (2018, United States), 1st International Guitar Competition of Finland (2018), Domaine Forget Guitar Competition (2017, Canada), Chihuahua International Guitar Competition (2015, Mexico), Indiana International Guitar Competition (2013) and the Montreal International Guitar Competition (2013, Canada).

In Finland, Barraza was awarded a CD recording with Europe’s Alba Records (2018). He received another at the first Klagenfurt International Competition in Austria (2018), to be produced and released in Los Angeles

by Yalil Guerra, a Latin Grammy®-winning guitarist and composer. Moreover, Barraza received a third recording contract prize at the International Competition in Culiacán (2019). He has worked with Flamenco Theater since 2016.

Olivia Rojas (Singer) is from El Paso, Texas. Her versatile background in traditional Mexican and choral music, coupled with her wide vocal range, allows her to capture a depth of expression.

Rojas works with flamenco companies across the United States and has worked with the National Institute of Flamenco in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Sachiko La Chayi in Minneapolis, Minnesota; EmiArte Flamenco in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and others. She directs Flamenco por la Vida in Phoenix and has worked with Flamenco Theatre since 2015.

Diana Schaible (Flute) studied flute and classical guitar at the University of Idaho and holds a master’s degree in flute performance from the University of Arizona. She was the principal flautist for the Arizona Symphony, was a member of the Fred Fox Graduate Wind Quintet, and played in the UA Wind Ensemble. She has performed in Canada, Mexico, Ireland, and the United States.

She is a teaching artist for the Tucson Unified School District and maintains her own teaching studio. This is her third season with Flamenco Theatre *Tamara Sol Flys (Dancer) trained with Lydia Torea and Dini Román, performing with Torea’s Artes Bellas in the televised performance, “Flamenco Fireworks” and with Chacón in “Sabor y Ritmo” at Los Angeles’ Century Club. A graduate of ASU and Johns Hopkins University, Tamara works in microbiology. She lives and teaches in Santa Fe, New Mexico. *Francisca Ivon Nava (Dancer) began her flamenco training under Laura Moya in Phoenix, AZ. SANDRA BERNHARD PROGRAM Join Sandra Bernhard as she looks back over the madness and mayhem and predicts the future. She’ll lift you up and soothe your frazzled nerves with her one-of-a-kind mix of social commentary, music, and a glimpse into Sandy’s world.

Sandra Bernhard Performer, actress, singer, and author Sandra Bernhard now appears as a series regular in season three of the immensely popular FX Television/Ryan Murphy show POSE, reprising her role as brassy but caring Nurse Judy Kubrak, who works with HIV/AIDS patients, following a memorable season one guest appearance and hugely successful second season. Bernhard has also done a special guest appearance on Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Apocalypse, highlighting a successful, decades-long television career. She is also currently in her fifth year hosting her weekly radio show Sandyland on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, channel 102, for which she won a broadcasting Gracie Award.

A pioneer of the one-woman show, Bernhard brings a completely unique and raucous mix of cabaret, stand-up, rock-n-roll, and social commentary to her live stage performances. Just last year she celebrated the 10-year anniversary of her iconic annual holiday shows at Joe’s Pub in New York City, while she also continues to tour throughout the country and overseas. Extremely notable past live stage shows, which she has performed both on and off-Broadway, include Without You I’m Nothing, I’m Still Here, Dammit, Everything Bad and Beautiful, and #blessed.

Bernhard’s film credits include The King of Comedy (for which she was awarded Best Supporting Actress by the National Society of Film Critics), Track 29, Hudson Hawk, Dinner Rush, and the live performance film Without You I’m Nothing. Past television credits include Two Broke Girls, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Broad City, Difficult People, You’re the Worst, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Will & Grace, The Sopranos, The Larry Sanders Show, and Roseanne. Music albums include I’m Your Woman (Polygram, 1986), Excuses for Bad Behavior (Epic, 1994), and the world music album Whatever It Takes (Mi5, 2009). PABLO ZIEGLER CHAMBER QUARTET PABLO ZIEGLER, Piano For decades, Buenos Aires-born, Grammy®-winning pianist, composer, and arranger Pablo Ziegler has been one of the most important figures in Argentine New Tango, the vibrant musical hybrid of classic tango, American jazz, and European art music. After performing in tango grandmaestro Astor Piazzolla’s legendary quintet for more than a decade and appearing on iconic Piazzolla recordings, including Tango: Zero Hour, La Camorra, and Central Park Concert, Ziegler has led his own groups for more than 20 years, refining and reimagining the bounds of the modern tango tradition.

Recent seasons have seen Ziegler performing at major venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Muziekgebouw, Verbier Festival, Ravinia Festival, SFJAZZ, L Jolla Summer Fest, Montreal Jazz Festival, the Ottawa International Jazz Fest, Laguna Beach Music Festival, UCLA, Birdland, Blue Note, Tokyo Jazz Festival. and many others. Ziegler also gives Masterclasses at music academies such as the Berklee School of Music, New England Conservatory, and Eastman School of Music.

Most recently, Ziegler released Radiotango with his Chamber Quartet. His previous CD, the first with his American trio, JazzTango, won the Grammy® for Best Latin Jazz Album (2018), marking the first time a nuevo tango release had won the award. Ok is the founding executive director of Stowe Tango Music Festival, the premier tango music festival in the United States. Every August, the festival brings together world-class artists and talented students to present a unique series of performances throughout the Stowe, Vermont, region. Born in Seoul, Korea, Ok grew up in New Zealand and began cello studies at age 11 to escape from studying violin. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School, studying with Bonnie Hampton and Fred Sherry, and she studied chamber music with Itzhak Perlman and Robert Mann.

Héctor Del Curto, Bandoneon Praised by The New York Times as a “splendid player,” Argentinean bandoneonist Héctor Del Curto's career, spanning for more than 25 years, has encompassed the traditional tango, new tango, jazz, classical and world music. He has performed with the world–renowned tango legend Astor Piazzolla, pianist Pablo Ziegler, clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera, saxophonist Joe Lovano, violinist Cho–Liang Lin, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra, among many others. Born into a family of bandoneon players, Del Curto was introduced to the world of tango and bandoneon by his grandfather. By the age of 17, he had won the title “Best Bandoneon Player Under 25” in Argentina and was invited to join the orchestra of the legendary Osvaldo Pugliese, the “Last Giant of Tango.” In 1999, Del Curto received the Golden Note Award from the Italian American Network in recognition of his artistic achievements. As conductor, he directed the spectacular show Forever Tango on Broadway and founded the Eternal Tango Orchestra, a 10-piece ensemble.

He recently produced and released his second album, Eternal Piazzolla, with a sold-out concert at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City. PEDRO GIRAUDO, Bass Originally from Córdoba, Argentina, Pedro Giraudo moved to New York City in 1996. Since then, he has become a highly versatile bassist, composer, and arranger, performing in a wide variety of musical projects, both in his own award-winning Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra and as a member of several prominent ensembles, ranging from tango to jazz. Giraudo has collaborated with ninetime Grammy® winner Paquito D’Rivera, Latin American icon Ruben Blades, Grammy® winner Pablo Ziegler, and Dizzy Gillespie’s protégé William Cepeda. As a composer and arranger, Giraudo leads his 13-piece ensemble, the Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra, and has been hailed by critics as one of the most creative and daring bandleaders on the scene today. His compositions combine his love of classical forms, Argentine tango, and folk music, and the spontaneity of jazz improvisation. His discography includes Destiny of Flowers (2000), Mr Vivo (2002), Desconsuelo (2005), Córdoba (2011) El Viaje (2009), which was voted “Best Latin Jazz Album Of The Year,” and “Best Latin Jazz Large Ensemble Album Of The Year,” as well as “Best Latin Jazz Composition” for Giraudo’s “El Bajonazo” by the publication Latin Jazz Corner. The band, which boasts of some of New York’s finest jazz musicians, who have performed regularly in the most prestigious jazz clubs in the New York City area, including the Jazz Standard, Birdland, the Jazz Gallery, and Joe’s Pub, as well as abroad. John Murph of Downbeat described Giraudo’s music as “an opulent listening experience of modern, orchestral jazz, brimming with passionate improvisations, deliberate contrapuntal melodies and plush harmonies. In 2008, Giraudo was awarded a composer’s commission through the Jazz Gallery in New York, for a new work for his large ensemble; the resulting suite was the centerpiece of Córdoba. And in 2010, he was commissioned by the JazzReach initiative to compose a new work for their Big Drum/Small World main-stage program. He has played bass on dozens of recordings for the world’s leading labels, including Sony, Nonesuch, Naxos, and Harmonia Mundi, as well as for independent projects and on movies, including Oliver Stone’s Wall Street II. He is also the principal bassist of the Hudson Symphony Orchestra.

SCOTTSDALE PHILHARMONIC AJAY R. PATEL, Resident Conductor Ajay R. Patel has been a music educator in Arizona since 2001.

Patel earned a bachelor’s of music education and a master’s of music in cello performance from Arizona State University.

As a resident conductor for the Scottsdale Philharmonic,Patel is also an accomplished cellist and has performed with many of the community and professional orchestras in Arizona. He has served as a substitute section cellist for the Arizona Opera, guest principal, cellist for the Chandler Symphony Orchestra, and the assistant principal cellist of the Arizona Pro Arte Orchestra. In the winter of 2011,Patel was the principal cellist of the American Festival Orchestra under the direction of Lawrence Golan, which toured 14 cities in China over a span of two weeks as part of an international cultural exchange.

Patel lives in Gilbert with his wife Rochel and their children Olivia, Alexander, and Phoenix.

JOHN MASSARO, Resident Conductor John Massaro is a resident conductor for the Scottsdale Philharmonic. He is also a principal conductor for Phoenix Opera and the Southwest Vocal Competition, conducting opera productions as well as galas with opera superstars Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Jonas Kaufmann. Massaro served as an assistant to Leonard Bernstein during the creation of his opera A Quiet Place and to Zubin Mehta for the Israel Philharmonic’s production of Madam Butterfly. He worked extensively with the German soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, coaching both opera and art song repertoire. Massaro started as a vocal coach and conductor. He went on to coach and accompanied several artists from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Massaro made his Carnegie Hall debut conducting the Mozart Requiem, which led to a distinguished European tour to Budapest, Krakow, Prague, Salzburg, and Vienna. He debuted with the Phoenix Symphony in 2002, conducting a 9/11 memorial concert, which included his own arrangement of the National Anthem. He also served as musical director for the Phoenix Theater Company and the Black Theatre Troupe, receiving an ariZoni Award for BTT’s production of Blues in the Night. He has also won awards as a music director for the Arizona Broadway Theatre.

He received his formal musical education at the Manhattan School of Music and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. O’Farrill’s professional career began with the Carla Bley Band and continued as a solo performer with a wide spectrum of artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte. In 2007, he founded the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the performance, education, and preservation of Afro Latin music.

In December 2010, O’Farrill traveled with the original Chico O’Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra to Cuba, returning his father’s musicians to his homeland. He continues to travel to Cuba regularly as an informal Cultural Ambassador, working with Cuban musicians, dancers, and students and bringing local musicians from Cuba to the United States and American musicians to Cuba. O’Farrill has performed with orchestras and bands that include his own Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra and Arturo O’Farrill Sextet, as well as other orchestras and intimate ensembles in the United States, Europe, Russia, Australia, and South America. An avid supporter of all the arts, O’Farrill has performed with Ballet Hispanico and the Malpaso Dance Company, for whom he has written three ballets. In addition, the Alvin Ailey Dance Company is touring a ballet titled Open Door, choreographed by Ron Brown to several of Arturo’s compositions and recordings. Brown’s own Evidence Dance Company has commissioned O’Farrill to compose New Conversations, which premiered in the Summer of 2018 at Jacob’s Pillow in Becket, Massachusetts. O’Farrill

has received commissions from Meet the Composer, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Philadelphia Music Project, The Apollo Theater, Symphony Space, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Young Peoples Chorus of New York, Columbia University, and the New York State Council on the Arts.

O’Farrill’s well-reviewed and highly praised “Afro-Latin Jazz Suite” from the album CUBA: The Conversation Continues (Motéma) took the 2016 Grammy® for Best Instrumental Composition and the 2016 Latin Grammy® for Best Latin Jazz Album. His powerful “Three Revolutions” from the album Familia-Tribute to Chico and Bebow was the 2018 Grammy® (his sixth) winner for Best Instrumental Composition. O’Farrill’s current album Four Questions (ZOHO) is the first to embody all original compositions, including the title track, which features the brilliant orator Dr. Cornel West. In 2019, O’Farrill was Artist in Residence for The Greene Space in New York City, for which he created a four-concert series, including a newly commissioned composition. The series title was “Radical Acts and Musical Deviancy.” In 2020, O’Farrill’s weekly concerts with the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, dubbed “Virtual Birdland,” topped the list of 10 Best Quarantine Concerts in The New York Times. O’Farrill is professor of global jazz studies and assistant dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at University of California, Los Angeles, and has been honored as a Steinway Artist for many years.

THE VILLALOBOS BROTHERS The Villalobos Brothers have been acclaimed as one of today’s leading contemporary Mexican ensembles. Their original compositions and arrangements masterfully fuse and celebrate the richness of Mexican folk music with the intricate harmonies of jazz and classical music.

The ensemble’s virtuosic performances have delighted audiences throughout Latin America, India, Russia, and Canada, and in more than 30 states across the United States. Almost Mozart Program notes by MNO Music Director Warren Cohen “Mozart” Symphony no. 37 in G major KV444 or Michael Haydn, Symphony no. 25 in G major This work represents a case of mistaken identity. The original Breitkopf edition of Mozart symphonies listed this piece as no. 37. This was generally accepted until 1907, when Lothar Perger was developing a numerical catalog of the music of Michael Haydn. He noticed that his subject’s Symphony no. 25 was virtually identical to Mozart’s Symphony no. 37.

With a little more research, he was able to figure out that Mozart had pinched his colleague’s work for a concert he needed to fill out, adding a slow introduction to the first movement and making a few changes, the most significant being the removal of a bassoon solo in the slow movement. Otherwise, he let the work stand unaltered.

It is perhaps understandable that the mistake was made. The concert at which Mozart introduced this symphony also featured the premiere of Symphony no. 36. Music historians paid little attention to the concert earlier in 1783, where Michael Haydn premiered his symphony, and the work in its original form was probably never played from the beginning of the 19th century until well into the 20th century. If it was known at all, it was in Mozart’s version.

Mozart and Michael Haydn knew each other well. Haydn had been concertmaster of the Salzburg Orchestra and organist at the cathedral where Mozart worked for several miserable years.

Haydn’s professional connection with the town of Mozart’s birth was deeper and longer (and far more affectionate!) than Mozart’s.

Mozart knew Michael Haydn before he met his more famous brother, Joseph, likely around 1783.

Although Mozart’s relationship with Joseph Haydn evolved into one of his closest friendships, Mozart also held Michael Haydn in great esteem, sometimes comparing his music to that of Joseph. The mere fact that Mozart was willing to attach his own introduction to a symphony of Michael Haydn and feature it on a concert devoted to his music demonstrated how seriously he took Haydn’s music.

The work is in three movements: Mozart’s static and ceremonial introduction is slightly at odds with the sprightly music that follows, which is expertly composed and clever. It is hard to see how anyone would think it was the work of Mozart; it occasionally suggests the music of Joseph Haydn, but even that comparison is a stretch.

MUSICANOVA The slow movement includes striking and engaging wind solos (including the bassoon solo that Mozart cut).

The finale is a tour de force of energy of a very distinctive type.

Although it might not be Mozart, it is worthy and strong music of a terrific composer.

Mendelssohn: Piano Concerto no. 1 in G minor Although listed as “Piano Concerto No. 1” this was the fourth piano concerto Mendelssohn wrote, after two concertos for two pianos and a Concerto in A minor for piano and strings. This is the first concerto he wrote for piano and a standard orchestra.

It was written in the summer of 1831, a period in which he was traveling a great deal and working on his third and fourth symphonies. Near the end of the summer, after a leisurely trip through Italy and Switzerland, he was engaged to conduct a concert of his music in Munich. At some point he decided the planned program was too short and dashed out this concerto in a matter of days. “It was written almost carelessly,” he said later.

Mendelssohn played the piece at the concert. A big hit, it was soon taken up by other pianists, most notably Franz Liszt and Clara Schumann, the two most famous pianists of the day.

Mendelssohn was surprised by its popularity, but it is easy to see. Music that attracts audiences generally has a well-balanced mix of familiar and novel elements. In this case, the familiar— great tunes, glittering virtuosity and clever dialogue between piano and orchestra—is balanced by several striking novelties.

The first comes at the beginning. Instead of a lengthy orchestral introduction, the piano enters after a few chords with a vigorous figure and continues to be the protagonist throughout the concerto. At the time only a few concertos introduced the piano right at the beginning, such as Beethoven’s last two concertos, but those then followed with the typical orchestra exposition of material. There is no earlier concerto I know of that begins like Mendelssohn’s.

Another novelty: Mendelssohn connects all three movements, playing them without pause. This gives an unexpected effect of energy and continuity.

The music is concise and beautifully constructed. It suggests that the speed with which Mendelssohn composed the work may have contributed to its effectiveness. Having come up with the ideas, and with only a few days to write them down, there was no time to overthink his inspirations. The freshness of its invention is evident.

Reger: Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Mozart The palindromic composer Max Reger is known to the general public either through an oftrepeated anecdote or through his reputation as a pedantic and dull writer of difficult, highly chromatic contrapuntal music.

It is true that Reger, in the formal organization of his music, preferred to use traditional structures such as the variation form, and that his music is written in the highly chromatic idiom of late Romantic composers who were pushing the boundaries of tonality. However, what is most striking about his music is its sensuality and beauty. He was a fine melodist, and his harmonic language is both distinctive and deeply expressive. His respect and love for composers of earlier times is evident in the series of works he wrote based on melodies by Telemann, Bach, and Mozart.

His Mozart Variations are based on one of Mozart’s most famous tunes, the gorgeous A major opening to the Piano Sonata K.331. It was daring to use this theme for a series of variations, for Mozart already did so in the sonata!

Reger presents the entire theme in varied orchestral garb before beginning a sequence of eight variations. They are striking: Although the harmonic language is far from that of Mozart, at every point you can clearly hear the relationship to the original tune. It could be argued that Reger’s variations, although they go way further afield harmonically, remain truer melodically to the original tune than Mozart’s own variations. They are also gorgeously and lushly scored.

It is hard to square Reger’s reputation for pedantry with the sensuous music you hear in this beautiful work.

After the variations, the extended fugue begins quietly with a highly chromatic theme, still squarely and easily related to the original tune. As the contrapuntal complexity increases with the entering voices, the initial feeling of an almost humorous take on the tune begins to change. By the time the original Mozart melody is triumphantly reiterated in the brass, one can hear Reger’s intention: a glorious evocation of the connection between the music of Mozart’s time and his own, an ode to the affirmation of the 19th century aesthetic of progress, and a wonderful expression of the spirit of grandeur lurking beneath the surface of Mozart’s innocent sounding tune.

And that anecdote? Reger’s Sinfonietta had just been harshly panned by the music critic Rudolf Louis. Reger chose to reply. “Dear Herr Louis,” he wrote. “I am in the smallest room in the house.

Your review is in front of me. Soon it will be behind me.”

Hui, 18, attends the University of Colorado, where she studies with Dr. Jennifer Hayghe, a Juilliard graduate and the last student of the legendary pianist and pedagogue Adele Marcus. She holds an associate diploma in piano performance from the Royal Schools of Music. Hui has attended and performed in the Arizona Piano Institute Summer Festival, the New Orleans Piano Institute Festival, the University of Houston International Piano Festival, and most recently, the Lamont Summer Academy in Denver, Colorado.

In March 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Hui won first-prize at the East Valley Music Teachers Association Piano Competition. Despite the pandemic, Hui continued to compete and was selected as state alternate in the MTNA/ASMTA Yamaha Senior Piano Competition.

In 2021, Hui placed second in the Arizona Musicfest Young Musicians Competition. She was awarded the Amy Fu Memorial Award for the best performance of a work by Beethoven at the Angelo and Micheline Addona Arizona Young Artist Piano Competition. Hui later won second prize at the Arizona State Music Teachers Association James R. Anthony Honors Recital and was named the recipient of the MTNA Pee-Yaw Lim Wilkes Endowment Award.

Hui was a finalist in the Arizona Piano Institute First Virtual Solo Competition for North America and was named honorable mention in the Steinway/Avanti Future Stars Competition. A native of Mesa and a recent graduate of Red Mountain High School, she is the recipient of the College of Music and Chancellor’s Achievement scholarships from the University of Colorado at Boulder, as well as the Arizona Musicfest Scholarship.

In Arizona, Hui studied with Dr. Mandarin G. Cheung-Yueh.

MUSICANOVA About Maestro Warren Cohen Warren Cohen has been music director of MusicaNova Orchestra since its founding in 2003. Under his leadership the orchestra has developed an international reputation for its performances and recordings of new and unjustly neglected music.

Cohen began his musical career as a pianist and composer.

His early positions included a stint as a ballet accompanist for Honolulu City Ballet and as music director of the Kumu Kahua Theatre in Honolulu, where his work in theater and opera led to his becoming a conductor. Over the past two decades he has conducted more than 1,000 orchestral, operatic, and choral works.

In addition to his work with MusicaNova, Cohen is artistic director of the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestras. He previously was music director of the Scottsdale Baroque Orchestra, the Fine Arts String Orchestra, and the Southern Arizona Orchestra, where he was appointed music director laureate in 2005.

He divides his time between New Jersey and Arizona with his wife, soprano Carolyn Whitaker, and his 22-year-old son Graham, an award-winning composer and violist (and frequent presenter on MNO educational outreach visits), entering the master’s program at The Juilliard School in New York City.
