Every year, Canal Convergence selects a featured theme to be highlighted alongside the perennial themes of Water + Art + Light, interactivity, and sustainability. This year’s featured theme is “Art and Technology.” The combination of cutting-edge technologies with public art has made possible some of the most exciting and innovative artworks to appear at Canal Convergence. Through this year’s theme, Scottsdale Public Art intends to expand the public’s understanding of technology’s role in artmaking and explore its impact on society.

Our theme for this year’s Canal Convergence focuses on art and technology. What better way to celebrate this than partnering with the global commissioned art community CODAworx, which is bringing its annual CODAsummit public art conference to Scottsdale to coincide with Canal Convergence. We are excited to welcome CODAsummit 2021 attendees, which include artists, designers, architects, and commissioning agencies from all over the world to Scottsdale this year, where we can enjoy and discuss artworks that push the boundaries of technology and the future of public art.

What a year it has been. Last year, Canal Convergence was tailored with the COVID-19 pandemic in mind: artwork was placed in a three-mile radius so families could safely drive from one site to another, the popular fire-emitting artworks by the Valley’s own Walter Productions were eliminated to reduce the number of crowds present at the Scottsdale Waterfront, the food and beer garden was closed to maintain safety, and in-person music, performances, and programming gave way to providing virtual opportunities. We are excited to return fully to the Scottsdale Waterfront with an emphasis on providing an environment that is as safe as possible for visitors to enjoy art, live performances, food and beverages, and educational programming while experiencing the return of Walter Productions’ fantastic fire and art shows. We will have all necessary safety protocols in place to ensure you can enjoy Canal Convergence, and we also hope you, in turn, will help us out by wearing your face mask when possible.

Say What You Will MASARY Studios (Boston, Massachusetts) Say What You Will is an interactive artwork exploring expression, understanding, and meaning through audio and visual media. Participants speak into any of the six kiosks set along the Arizona Canal as Say What You Will transforms their voices into expressions of video, which are projected onto six surfaces above the canal. Floom

Walter Productions returns to the Scottsdale Waterfront with Floom, a series of fire-spouting flower sculptures in the Arizona Canal between Marshall Way Bridge and Goldwater Boulevard. Floom will have a schedule of fire performances set to music each night during Canal Convergence.

With individually programmable light pixels, presenting hundreds of different lighting sequences and innumerable lighting effects, Entwined Meadow is a series of 10 floral clusters along the bank of the canal. Light Falls

A towering waterfall of light, Light Falls is a series of illuminated tubes that cascade down to create the effect of water hitting rocks. A range of colors mimics the organic movement of falling water while ambient nature sounds complete the waterfall illusion.

Arc ZERO: Oculus is an immersive gateway with a fiery glow, made simply from light and water. The fusion of these elemental materials produces an otherworldly experience as the mist erupts from a ring encircling Soleri Bridge.

The Planets

Bringing the cosmic beauty of our solar system down to earth, The Planets is a series of seven 2D and 3D sculptures that create optical illusions through light. When the lighting system is activated, the sculptures display vibrant and complex compositions in the Marshall Way Bridge underpass.

Time Stream is an interactive artwork where participant movement is captured by threedimensional depth cameras and projected into a virtual space, altering a digital ecosystem of abstract entities that appear on eight screens arranged in a circular format. Mini Nova

The DOOR(S)

Mini Nova is a collection of four large steel and acrylic sculptures that appear as endlessly exploding stars. At night, the sculptures come to life with hundreds of colorful LED animations, creating brightly mesmerizing bursts of light.

When you open one of The DOOR(S), you’ll discover an alternate reality. Each time you close and reopen the door, a different experience awaits, bending your imagination to dream, “What if?”

A poetic narrative of extreme climate transformation, Mirage is visible through augmented reality above the Arizona Canal. A column of abstracted water droplets swirl up to meet an iridescent hourglass that dissolves, and the water droplets transform into abstracted sand granules that stream down toward the canal before dissipating into thin air.

AeroGels is a visual narrative guide of the experiences of an artist on Mars in the year 2268. It comprises six physical stations with augmented reality components at each that reveal the artist-in-residence’s travels through the Martian landscape.

Scavenger Hunt: The Case of the Missing Artwork One of the artists at Canal Convergence needs your help! Put on your detective hat, pull out your mobile device, and head out on an augmented reality scavenger hunt.

Canal Tour with Look for signs along the canal that invite you to virtually join SRP staff on an augmented reality tour that tells the story of the engineering, history, and maintenance of the Arizona Canal. Five stops will point out unique features that make the Scottsdale Waterfront a vibrant community space while also providing crucial resources for our state.

Canal Convergence AR Artwork Step into the innovative world of augmented reality artworks at Canal Convergence! SUSTAINABILITY The Commitment

Scottsdale Public Art is partnering with Scottsdale Solid Waste Services and local businesses to reduce the amount of waste at Canal Convergence each year. Our goal is to divert up to 95 percent of nonhazardous waste materials through recycling and composting efforts. Our success in a sustainable event requires strong relationships with our partners to boost the economic, social, and environmental significance of Scottsdale. The Canal Convergence team works to develop our event around eco-conscious efforts that reinforce our zero-waste goal.
