WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO OF SCOTTSDALE ARTS Welcome to The ARTrageous Gala | Luminescence, Scottsdale Arts’ 2022 gala!

After two years of the pandemic, we are delighted to convene with all of you in person. We have taken every precaution to make sure our guests, performers, and staff remain safe and healthy.

It’s been a wild ride these two years, and I am extremely happy to report that Scottsdale Arts has emerged from the pandemic strong. With our entire staff intact throughout these two years, we have produced the most in-depth and diverse season of any arts organization in Arizona. We are in the best financial shape in our history, and we are building a robust platform from which to grow in the coming years.

Our amazing team has made it possible to execute 280 shows and events this season, with some of the finest exhibitions, extensive educational work in the schools and across the community, and outstanding new public art projects to boot. Canal Convergence 2021 was one of the most successful in its nine-year history, drawing more than 250,000 visitors to the experience and becoming a true destination event by adding a global arts conference.

Perhaps most significantly, BIG improvements are in progress as we exit the pandemic: a $30 million Scottsdale Civic Center renovation will create muchneeded and magnificent outdoor stages and events venues, transforming our campus once again into the beating heart of Scottsdale. We are slated to reopen these new venues around Super Bowl LVII in February of 2023. In addition, The ARTrageous Gala will find its new permanent home on the renovated Civic Center as a glamorous, springtime outdoor event starting next year.

While construction is underway, we are also poised to start a complete reimaging of our small theater at the Center, turning it into a modern, technologically advanced jewel box venue by 2024. With this project, we will add a beautiful indoor/outdoor café/bar and redesign our patron services areas.

We are thrilled to celebrate this extravagant night of Luminescence with you!

The ARTrageous Gala 2022 also represents the first full-production, large-scale event showcasing the fantastic new venues here at our beloved Scottsdale Stadium.

We are extremely grateful to our gala sponsors for their tremendous support in making this a memorable night for all.

In closing, we would like to thank Mayor Ortega, the City Council, and the city staff for their continued trust, support, and friendship. Also, a heartfelt thanks to our ever-growing Board of Trustees and advisory committees for their vision and belief that the arts are a vital and essential component of our community.

WELCOME FROM THE GALA CHAIRS This year is a unique opportunity for the Gala. With the unusual but exciting circumstance of the campus renovation, we all needed to think a bit outside the box for where and how the event could be created. Thinking outside the box actually led us to creating a box—one of wondrous, luminescent magic.

For this very special evening, Scottsdale Stadium has been turned it into a large magic box, a portal to an alternate reality, if you will. Upon entering, you were greeted by law-defying performances, fantastic creatures, and brilliant interactive art displays transporting you to another world. It is like no other ARTrageous Gala thus far, and we are thrilled to co-chair this special, fun event for such a beneficial purpose.

Why is this important? Art has always had a powerful impact on humanity; our careers have been built on the importance of creating beauty and its effects on others. Art often provides a communal connection as we share the similar emotions and experiences portrayed or, conversely, challenges our perspectives so we grow in our understanding of other human journeys fostering peace and unity. Art lifts our spirit, fills us with emotion, and is an important way to express who we are as individuals and as a society.

Through its many diverse branches, Scottsdale Arts continues to have a meaningful impact on the quality of our lives as citizens and also on the many visitors we host per annum. Scottsdale Arts substantially impacts the quality of life we experience, including the vast array of public art displayed all over our city. We personally love Canal Convergence, a technology-forward and interactive exhibition of curated global and local art that is making a mark for us on the international scene.

As a community effort, thank you for joining us this evening at Luminescence to support Scottsdale Arts, which in turn benefits our local neighborhoods while expanding a notable reputation for Scottsdale’s cultural scene in the international art arena.

Quixotic is an innovative performance art collective that fuses imagination with technology, dance, projection mapping, and live music to create fully immersive, multi-sensory experiences.

Quixotic was given Silicon Valley’s unofficial stamp of genius when they were invited to perform at the global TED Conference in 2012. A unique blend of performance art, technology, and emotion, Quixotic fuses all these elements into what The New York Times branded an “innovative circus performance” and Men’s Journal declared, “one of the best contemporary (cirque) acts.” They have performed for audiences worldwide and have helped launch brand products for companies such as BVLGARI, Faena Hotels, Garmin, HP, Smithsonian, and Toyota.
