Chris Fraser: Looking Back October 3 – January 10 Oakland-based artist Chris Fraser brings his experiments in light, shadow and movement to SMoCA’s fourth Architecture + Art commission.

Inspired by the exquisite desert sky, Fraser will create a luminous room-sized environmental sculpture where visitors navigate shape-shifting silhouettes and shafts of light. An outdoor installation will surprise visitors.

Bruce Munro: Ferryman’s Crossing October 3 – April 24 Shimmering rows of reflective compact discs lit by pulsating spotlights comprise Bruce Munro’s Ferryman’s Crossing, an installation that evokes sunlight bouncing off the surface of flowing water.

That suggestion of water serves as a metaphor for the continuous flow of time – melding past, present and future into a single, ever-moving whole.

Betye Saar: Still Tickin’ January 30 – May 1 There is a touch of alchemy to Betye Saar’s work: simple objects transformed into powerful art. For six decades, she has crafted compelling, astute and expressive artworks that bravely critique forms of everyday racism, sexism and oppression while simultaneously celebrating the curiosity and beauty found in transcending these outmoded categories of division and separation. This retrospective explores the breadth and depth of Saar’s sculptures and works on paper, and includes a number of specially constructed installations.

I Am … The Future January 29 – April 27 Young@Art Gallery VSA, a Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability Program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, annually curates an exhibition of artwork by children with disabilities from around the world. This year’s theme encouraged children to think about their futures. SMoCA brings their optimistic and insightful artistic answers to the Young@Art Gallery.

The Center provides free tickets to selected events for eligible veterans, active-duty military personnel, students (29 and under) and full-time teachers. A current photo ID for students or teachers, or proof of military service is required. Tickets are limited and must be requested by phone or in person at the box office. Arts lovers 29 years and under enjoy 50-percent off tickets to selected events. All ticket prices (A, B and C) are available for the 50-percent discount (one ticket per eligible youth). Tickets are limited and may be purchased online, by phone or in person using promo code 29UNDER.

4-Show Discounts Save on tickets when you purchase four or more eligible events in one transaction. Most ticket prices (A, B and C) are available for 4-Show-priced savings.
