This season we celebrate a number of milestones: the 40th anniversary of Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, the 30th anniversary of Scottsdale Public Art, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art’s “Sweet 16” and the 15th year of the Scottsdale International Film Festival.
The arts and business worlds share much in common. Both thrive on collaboration, creativity, innovation, talent and hard work.
Through the generosity of our many supporters, we are able to bring the best of the arts to our community. We thank Mayor Jim Lane and the Scottsdale City Council for their leadership, as well as our trustees, advisory boards, members, sponsors and audiences. We also gratefully acknowledge InEight, one of our valued Corporate Partners and the sponsor of the Center’s 40th season.

Kelly Richardson: Tales on the Horizon September 12 – January 10 Drama and stillness, beauty and strangeness, hard science and science fiction – these dualities come together in the work of Kelly Richardson. Taking cues from landscape painting, cinema and planetary research, the artist’s video installations offer imaginative glimpses into the future and prompt a careful consideration of the present. Organized by Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and sponsored by Walter and Karla Goldschmidt Foundation and Tamar Weiss in memory of Emil Weiss.

Chris Fraser: Looking Back October 3 – January 10 Oakland-based artist Chris Fraser brings his experiments in light, shadow and movement to SMoCA’s fourth Architecture + Art commission. Inspired by the exquisite desert sky, Fraser will create a luminous room-sized environmental sculpture where visitors navigate shape-shifting silhouettes and shafts of light. An outdoor installation will surprise visitors. Organized by Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and sponsored by Walter and Karla Goldschmidt Foundation and Tamar Weiss in memory of Emil Weiss.

Bruce Munro: Ferryman’s Crossing October 3 – April 24 Shimmering rows of reflective compact discs lit by pulsating spotlights comprise Bruce Munro’s Ferryman’s Crossing, an installation that evokes sunlight bouncing off the surface of flowing water. That suggestion of water serves as a metaphor for the continuous flow of time – melding past, present and future into a single, ever-moving whole. Organized by Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and sponsored by Walter and Karla Goldschmidt Foundation, and Paul Giancola and Carrie Lynn Richardson.

Urban living will change drastically in the coming years. Drawing inspiration from recent developments in architecture and “smart city” technology, students create an imaginary “city of light.” Participants include high school students from the New School for Arts and Academics working with artist Hilary Harp and teacher Henry Fries. Organized by Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. The Young@Art Gallery is sponsored by Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation.
Betye Saar: Still Tickin’ January 30 – May 1 There is a touch of alchemy to Betye Saar’s work: simple objects transformed into powerful art. For six decades, she has crafted compelling, astute and expressive artworks that bravely critique forms of everyday racism, sexism and oppression while simultaneously celebrating the curiosity and beauty found in transcending these outmoded categories of division and separation. This retrospective explores the breadth and depth of Saar’s sculptures and works on paper, and includes a number of specially constructed installations. Curated by Roel Arkesteijn, curator of contemporary art at De Domijnen (formerly Museum Het Domein) in Sittard, The Netherlands, in partnership with Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
