Lifetime Achievement Mary Bradley

With deep personal pride and immense joy, I stand before you today to honor Mary Bradley, recipient of this year’s GNAA Lifetime Achievement Award. Mary has been involved with the Greater Nashville Apartment Association since 1991 when she moved to Nashville. During this time she has served in all positions, and in 2007 served as President for the association and currently as Chairman of the Statistics Committee.

Tonight I would like to speak about the remarkable journey of Mary Bradley, who has wholeheartedly embraced the pursuit of excellence for 38 years. Her unwavering commitment to her team, her company, and her personal standards has become an inspiring benchmark within our organization and the industry. Mary’s leadership shines as a guiding light, not through mere command but through genuine inspiration. She instills a culture of excellence by setting high expectations for herself and those around her. In our conversations, Mary has graciously shared stories of her countless interviews over the years, allowing us a glimpse into her indomitable spirit, love for our industry, and dedication to the people she meets. She shared: “Eleven years ago when interviewing candidates in Florida, the candidate arrived for her 6 p.m. interview and I knew she was not the right fit for my lease-up – not tailored, too much jewelry, casual shoes, not polished.

Because she’d shared in the phone interview that she needed the job and was a single mom, I didn’t want her leaving and wondering why I didn’t call, so I asked if she wanted some feedback that would help her on her next interview. I told her to go to TJ Maxx or Marshall’s and get a black jacket, black pants (or navy or gray), a crisp white shirt, pumps, and to choose one ring, one necklace, one pair of earrings – not three of each.

A month later on Thanksgiving Day, while I was fixing the feast in the kitchen, my cell pinged. It was a text from her: ‘On this Thanksgiving Day, you are what I am most thankful for. I took your advice and was hired after my next interview. Thank you.’

“While interviewing to fill an open manager’s position recently, I met with one young lady who was darling, but not experienced enough for what we needed. I told her I’d be setting her up for failure if I hired her, but I shared a copy of my guiding principles as some of the things that have made me successful. She texted me the next day saying, ‘Mrs. Bradley, I wanted to say thank you for granting me an interview. I left that meeting with more than I came with. It was a pleasure.’”

Be a lifelong learner. Teach others.

• Acknowledge and reward contributions.

• Enable the dreams of others • Excuses – recommend solutions.

• Fail forward philosophy • No drama. Stick to the facts.

• No surprises – anticipate, plan, inform!

• Facilitate productivity at all levels.

• Live as you want to be remembered.

Mary has lived these guiding principles for her entire career, creating a culture that her teams and coworkers have embraced. One of her managers created bracelets for her managers’ meetings and Leadership Conferences with W.W.M.D inscribed on them; the inscription stood for “What Would Mary Do?”. Her team explained that this was the process of analysis they used. Mary still has several of these bracelets that she kept as a treasured surprise. And I suspect this gesture meant more to her than the long list of industry awards she has received.

As a matter of fact, all of us could ask this of ourselves more often: What Would Mary Do? I cannot think of any situation where asking that question would not produce a better result.

Mary has the innate ability to inspire everyone around her to strive to make her proud. I hired Mary 11 years ago, and to this day I always hope she walks away from our interactions feeling proud of me and of Arlington News & Events

Properties. I have never worked with anyone in my career who requires and gives so much of themselves.

Mary’s attention to detail in the pursuit of excellence is legendary within our company. As anyone on my team will tell you, I am a Big Picture person. I can honestly say that Mary’s attention to detail is both fantastic and frustrating, unique, and challenging; and clearly not something I can replicate. However, it is one of the qualities that truly embodies how she brings about positive change in the world she lives and works in.

Since welcoming Mary to our team, she has become more than just a colleague; she has been a mentor, a motivator, and a friend to everyone at Arlington.

Our senior leadership and support teams have not only grown but thrived under her guidance. They often recall how Mary’s timely words of encouragement, or a heartfelt note provided them with strength when they needed it most.

When we asked Mary about the awards she is most proud of, she responded by saying the notes and cards over the years showing she has made a difference in someone’s life mean more to her than any of the awards she has received. Guiding her decisions and actions for the past 38 years is her principle of “live as you want to be remembered.” That is her legacy.

And I know that in the coming years I will continue to ask myself “What Would Mary Do?”. I will ask it when I see someone who needs a word of encouragement, I will ask it when I see someone who is young in our industry and might need Mary’s guiding principles for success. I will try to mentor and encourage our associates and team members, because that is what Mary would do. And I will be the better leader and manager for asking the question.

Tonight, for her extraordinary contributions and the countless lives she has uplifted, we firmly believe no one deserves this Lifetime Achievement Award more than Mary.

Mary, I love you and your Arlington family loves you, and we are endlessly grateful for your leadership, and proud to stand alongside you as you receive this award.
