Online Market Survey Reports Using the GIS System

As of January 1, every GNAA member has access to one of our most beneficial services – the statistical data that we collect on our apartment communities. For years, this data was available only via a subscription and was only in print format. Last year, we made the leap to a real-time, on-demand GIS system, and this year we are proud to announce this is one of your GNAA member benefits. The Market Survey/GIS system is a great tool for all members to utilize in their business planning. For our apartment and management members, you can see how your community stacks up with others in your area, whether you are looking at rents or amenities. For our associate members, you can plan out your prospects by pulling up communities in a given area to see which ones would be more open to your services based on the information you see there. All of this in an “on-demand” website that adjusts to display on your desktop, tablet or smart phone. Accessing the system is simple. Sign on to the GNAA website using your username and password. If you are an approved GNAA member, you will just go to the Statistics tab and click on the GNAA GIS System menu item. If you would like a quick tutorial on the system before viewing, go to the Statistics tab and click on GIS Overview. Should you have any issues or questions about the system, feel free to call the GNAA office at 615-365-3047 and ask for Bobbi or Scott. We hope you enjoy using the new and improved statistics system!

Getahn Ward, a business reporter with The Tennessean, passed away last year. He was a friend of GNAA, sharing our Market Survey in his column, and gave GNAA a credible voice as an authority in the multifamily industry. We are happy to have donated $500 to a scholarship fund in his name at TSU. If you would like to donate online, visit bit.ly/getahnward.

TAA Update

State of the State Governor Bill Haslam delivered his final State of the State address Monday, January 29, 2018 to a packed joint session of the Tennessee General Assembly. The speech outlined a laundry list of accomplishments and statistics from the past seven years. For many observers Haslam’s tenure represents one of the most prosperous operations of state government in recent memory. His dedication to a prudent budget process, substantial education accomplishments, and adopting policies to improve the business climate are worthy of cheers. Governor Haslam mentioned a number of crucial policies he implemented in partnership with the business community. These priorities and reforms have been game changers in helping Tennessee’s economic growth and include: • Comprehensive Tort Reform • Comprehensive Workers’ Compensation Reform – Rates 40% below prior to reforms • IMPROVE Act – Focused on improving our infrastructure system and Single Sales Factor for Tennessee manufacturers. • Tennessee Manufacturing – Haslam noted that for each manufacturing job there are 3 to 4 other jobs that come with them, justifying his focus on recruiting and expanding manufacturing. • TN ECD restructured focusing on FastTrack grants instead of tax credits; Business Facility magazine ranking us #1 and Tennessee #1 in Foreign Direct Investment

• Workforce and Education – Establishing Drive to 55 / Tennessee Promise / Tennessee Reconnect to enhance our workforce. • $1.5 billion in new dollars to K-12 education includes $500 million for teachers’ salaries • $578 million in tax cuts, partnering with General Assembly establishing Tennessee as one of the lowest personal tax states in nation for individuals. Governor Haslam’s final budget proposal calls for more than $200 million in new state funding for K-12 education, $128 million in job growth investments and $30 million in previously disclosed dollars to address the opioid epidemic. Haslam also noted his 2018 priorities which are three major focus areas: • Tennessee Together – $30 million initiative to end the opioid crisis in Tennessee through prevention, treatment and law enforcement. • Complete to Compete – Workforce and Education Initiative promoting college completion through scholarship incentives and structured scheduling • Juvenile Justice Reform – Adopting responsible reforms to Tennessee’s juvenile justice system The governor said, should the budget be approved, state government will have grown at a rate of 2 percent per year on average while he’s been in office. “It has helped us be able to cut taxes, lower our debt and raise the amount of money in our savings account,” he said. The Haslam Administration released a website, TENNESSEE WILL LEAD, that articulates the challenge that the Governor issued in his speech, as he politely challenges the legislators (and his successor) to continue the work to move Tennessee forward.

Education Conference Keynote Speaker

Eddie George

With all his legendary accomplishments on the football field – Heisman Trophy winner, star running back at The Ohio State University, NFL Rookie of the Year and holder of a host of NFL records – Eddie George could have retired a proud man, with a strong legacy as a history-making athlete. Instead of resting on his records, Eddie took on the challenge of his lifetime – during the past decade he has quietly built businesses aimed at helping improve the quality of life for all Americans. Eddie, who will soon receive his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago, understands that he is mostly known for his athletic accomplishments. “Since I’m mostly known for winning on the football field, a lot of people seem surprised when they hear that I’ve used my education, experience and passion to build these exciting businesses. They say ‘you’re a businessman, too?’ I like that reaction,’” Eddie said. Eddie’s vision of healthy people and healthy places is being brought to life through the commitment of everyone at George Enterprises. Learn more about our Commitment. Eddie’s companies include EGX Lifestyle, working to help people develop healthy lives; and EDGE, the planning and design firm helping create healthy communities. Beyond leading these organizations, Eddie’s business life is filled with media appearances, entertainment roles, hosting Radio, By George!, speaking engagements and philanthropy. Eddie finds his work with charities very rewarding, donating his time and money to various organizations, including his own non-profit organization, Visions with Infinite Possibilities (V.I.P). Eddie is married to Tamara “Taj” Johnson-George, a Grammy®-nominated singer with the soul group SWV (“Sisters With Voices”), which sold more than six million records. Taj was also featured on “Survivor” in 2009 and voted

one of the fan favorites. Eddie also made a guest appearance on “Survivor.” Taj and Eddie live in Tennessee. They are the loving parents of two sons, Eriq and Jaire. They enjoy a busy life of friends, family and kids’ sporting events. As an example to others, Eddie continues to train hard and find balance to maintain his peak physical, mental and spiritual condition to meet the challenges of his demanding schedule.

Legendary Football Career

With his passionate and competitive spirit, Eddie has carved a special niche for himself in the professional sports arena, particularly the NFL where he is only the second NFL running back to rush for 10,000 yards while never missing a start, joining Jim Brown. Only Walter Payton (170) has started more consecutive regular-season games than George’s 128. In addition to the Heisman Trophy, George won several NFL Rookie of the Year awards in 1996, and was the Tennessee Titans’ starting tailback until 2003. Throughout his tenure as one of the NFL’s premier running backs, Eddie not only possessed an explosive combination of speed, power and toughness, but was the epitome of durability. Eddie’s punishing north-and-south running style won him the 1997 AP’s “Offensive Rookie of the Year” honors as well as four consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl from 1998-2001. Drafted in the first round by the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans, he owns virtually every franchise rushing record. Eddie led the AFC Champion Titans to Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000.

Closing Session Speaker

HK Derryberry Anything is Possible!

By every measure, HK Derryberry’s life is truly a miracle. Born July 8, 1990, in Nashville, Tennessee, HK arrived three months premature due to an automobile accident that took his mother’s life. The tiny two-pound baby boy would spend the next 96 days fighting for survival in Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit. Although doctors offered little hope for survival, this miracle baby proved them all wrong. Because of the accident and his premature birth, he was born blind, with cerebral palsy and countless other medical problems. Raised by his grandmother, some people might say HK faced too many mountains to climb. Quite the contrary! At an early age, HK displayed an extraordinary will to overcome his disabilities, and at age three enrolled at the Tennessee School for the Blind, becoming one of the youngest students in the school’s history. His right arm, paralyzed from a stroke suffered soon after birth, did not stop him from learning to read and write Braille with just one hand, another first for the 150-year old school! HK’s life was changed forever in 1999 when he unexpectedly met Jim Bradford, a local businessman in Brentwood, Tennessee, who was married with two adult daughters. HK and Jim soon became inseparable and eventually Jim’s family welcomed HK into their lives like an adopted son. His personal mentoring and constant involvement quickly exposed HK to a world he had never experienced. Today HK and Jim continue to inspire and entertain audiences as professional motivational speakers. They have made more than 175 appearances and shared their inspiring story with more than 40,000 people since 2012. HK’s life is a constant reminder to all audiences that everyone can accomplish anything in life if they always keep a positive attitude, define their personal goals, have fun, work hard, and never give up. He frequently tells his listeners, “The only disability any of us have in life is a negative attitude.”

Visit www.gnaa.org or contact the GNAA office for your entry form and to pick which categories you would like for consideration. Each entry per community is a separate $75 fee or you can choose to enter all for $300. Judging typically takes place the last two weeks of June and the first two weeks of July. Good luck to all who enter!
