My key piece of advice to anyone running a business, or thinking of starting a business is to understand key financial numbers. We work with a lot of business oweners who have come to us and don’t know they difference between turnover and profit, or don’t know their cost of sales Another thing that a lot of business owners don t know is how much do they have to sell or invoice every month to break even? Understanding these basic figures can really help business owners plan ahead and understand how well their business is performing Looking at the amount of cash in the bank is only a snapshot -it doesn’t give the full picture. Are you putting enough money away for Corporation Tax, or VAT? How much money can you afford to take out of the business? How much money do you need to take out of the business? Do the 2 figures align?
We work with our clients to help them understand these key metrics. No one likes a nasty surprise of a tax bill they haven’t accounted for
So my key advice would be to work with your acccountant to understand these key numbers and ensure you are in control
