EWAN MCCLURE
GRAVITY AND LIGHT catalogue available
We are delighted to host Ewan McClure’s first solo exhibition at The Scottish Gallery. He is a painter of prodigious talent using oil paint in the Scottish tradition of Belle Peinture, so well represented in our history by both Glasgow Boys and Scottish Colourists. For subjects he chooses landscape, here of Sweden in particular: fresh, plein air studies; the figure: still, in movement, always psychologically animated, and still life/interior giving ample scope for original composition and play of light. A fully illustrated catalogue introduces a new painter for whom the title genius seems quite appropriate.
To the casual observer, a still life painter’s workday involves a surprising amount of arbitrary juggling with bric-a-brac. But amid the trial-and error process of setting up; principles of harmony and order are dimly suggesting themselves to the painter – there to be obeyed or defied. As an idea finally crystallises, every passage of space and form is understood to relate to every other, and the channelled excitement of painting can begin.

VINTAGE AND CONTEMPORARY PRINTS CURATED BY TOMMY ZYW Printmaking in Britain underwent a revival at the turn of the 20th century the founding of the Society of Painters and Etchers in 1880 and the release of several publications by London art dealers was a driving force behind the growing popularity in print making. In recent times, printmaking in Scotland has flourished with the emergence of several independent studios which have included Harley Brothers, Glasgow and Edinburgh Print Studios, Peacocks and Graal Press. This exhibition features prominent figures in Scottish and British printmaking with specific examples from contemporary artists.

GALACTICA Jacqueline Cullen presents Galactica - a collection of wearable, sculptural jewellery in 18ct gold; combining materials such as Whitby jet, black diamonds and agate. With diverse inspiration ranging from thunderous skies to intergalactic space travel, colliding asteroids, comets and neon dust - cascades of tiny diamonds flow from hand carved fissures depicting these phenomenon. Jacqueline specialises in contemporary Whitby jet and black diamond jewellery and has recently introduced an ethereal grey agate collection set with champagne, electric and ice blue diamonds.
Whitby jet is a 180 million year old naturally occurring black fossil which derives from the ancestor of the monkey puzzle tree (araucaria) found on the North East coast of England. Whitby jet was made popular during the reign of Queen Victoria as it was used to signify mourning. Jacqueline’s supplier of jet lives in Whitby and abseils down the cliffs to access the ancient caves and Victorian crawl holes to collect the raw material.

JULIETTE BIGLEY
NEW MATERIAL PERSPECTIVES catalogue available The Scottish Gallery is delighted to present Juliette Bigley New Material Perspectives, which is a site specific exhibition in both the gallery and garden. Focusing particularly on lines and thresholds, Juliette’s work is sculptural and often comprises groups of objects. Base metals and precious metals are used to explore how we experience our emotional and physical place in the world.
Choosing the material for each piece is an essential part of my process as each metal has a different character that affects both the fabrication of the piece and the way in which the piece communicates. Juliette Bigley
