The Scottish Gallery is delighted to present Shoreline - a solo showcase from jeweller Heather McDermott.

Heather studied Jewellery and Silversmithing at Edinburgh College of Art before completing an MA in 2011. She then returned home to the most southerly township of Aird, Sleat in the Isle of Skye, where she takes inspiration from the ever-changing shoreline and landscape.

“The tideline of Skye is a treasure trove of unique objects discarded from the urban environment and deposited by the power of the Hebridean swell. Here rope, wood and plastic take on a subtler identity as wind and wave shape and re-shape form and colour.

These inspirational scenes are developed and translated in my work by utilising shapes and colours. Unconventional in size and structure, each piece is an expression of sculptural form and is designed to create a statement. The continually changing shoreline is my constant source of inspiration and my current collection ‘tidal surge’ is the contemporary interpretation of these surroundings.”

“This statement necklace represents the rogue buoys that get trapped in the discarded washed up fishermens’ nets on the beaches of Skye. The industrial nature of the stainless steel is hand formed into soft geometric shapes, mimicking fishing nets and lobster pots. Repetition creates chaotic chain which then traps simple vivid discs of colour inspired by washed up buoys.”

“Iconic colours from the landscape of Skye are transferred and distressed onto these large buoy earrings. Fishing boat blue, soft green when the Mediterranean like seas appear in summer, buoy orange marking the creels below, dark blue for the summer midnight sky, vivid fishing net aqua and dreich grey for the winter.”

“Meaning ‘to entangle’ this fankle necklace represents the tangled chaotic rope and debris that is found washed up on the beaches in Aird. Each link is handformed and linked together with mini silver discs connected throughout. With five layers of silver chain this necklace is staggered in length.”
