FROM THE GREENHOUSE MILLIE BEHRENS INGJERD HANEVOLD ÅSE-MARIT THORJØRNSRUD 4 - 28 A P R I L 2018 The Scottish Gallery presents From The Greenhouse an exhibition curated by Millie Behrens celebrating, for the first time collectively and in Scotland, three Norwegian jewellers all inspired by botany and the natural world. Millie, Ingjerd and Åse-Marit are extremely grateful to Norwegian Crafts for the funding that has helped to make this exhibition possible. Knowing each other since the eighties through Art College and various other means, Millie, Ingjerd and Åse-Marit all realised they had a similar interest in botany and the natural world, leading them each to design and create contemporary jewellery - the results each distinct but sharing a common love for the natural world.

MILLIE BEHRENS
b. 1958
Millie Behrens studied at The National College of Art and Design in Oslo, Norway and graduated in 1983. She now exhibits her work both nationally and internationally and, in 2014, completed a commission for the Queen of Norway's tiara and jewellery collection. Now based just outside Oslo and inspired by nature and geometry, she creates jewellery using mainly silver and combines other materials such as pebbles she has found on beaches across the world. 'The complexity and beauty of geometry fascinates me. When I create my jewellery, I am inspired by the shapes, lines and patterns that I discover in nature, such as plough furrows in a fields, the branches of a tree, or pebbles on the beach. I often combine these images with geometric shapes and constructions.' Ingjerd Hanevold is a Norwegian jewellery designer born in Asker, Norway. Ingjerd was a Professor at the School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg, Sweden from 1996-98 and is now Professor of Metal & Jewellery at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. Ingjerd designed the Olympic Medals for the 1994 Winter Olympics and has received numerous awards including Jacobprisen 2007. Her work can be seen in many museums and private collections both nationally and internationally. Ingjerd’s work is inspired by forms of nature, besides personal identity and how we express ourselves. ‘My garden is a little Utopia. I never stop being fascinated by the beauty and drama happening there, from the first fragile shoots that grow throughout the summer and die in the autumn; the rhythm of life, a repetitive natural wonder, year after year. I hail from generations of gardeners in Asker, Southern Norway. Growing up close to nature has been forming my interest and work as a jewellery artist. I have my studio at home; from where I observe trees and bushes beside a little fish pond outside my window. I try to find a rhythm in the working process, a balance between concentration and openness. Originally from Drøbak in Norway, Åse-Marit Thorbjørnsrud graduated from the Danish College of Jewellery and Silversmithing (now Institute of Precious Metals) in 1985. She has since participated in numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Her jewellery is handcrafted using mainly precious metals to create intricately folded and repetitive-patterned pieces. This collection is based on her Mother’s dahlias; ‘I grew up in a garden full of dahlias. The dahlias were my mother`s pride and joy. Now I have inherited them - the responsibility and the pleasure. They cannot take any frost, so they must be planted out in spring and brought back inside in the autumn - an annual ritual. The slightest touch of frost will suffice to wither the plant. But life is preserved in the tuber and next year it starts all over again.
