FROM THE EDGE OF THE WORLD Jewellery by Guy Royle

GUY ROYLE b.1954 Using the simplest of tools and methods, Guy Royle works mainly with sheet silver, which is cut, bent, beaten and formed.

This metalwork compliments his use of natural pebbles and semi-precious stones, which are ground, shaped and drilled into beads. Since the 1980s Guy has made a name for himself as a jeweller, however his varied practice includes printing, painting and weaving. Except for his time at Morley College of Art, Guy is largely self-taught. Perhaps more valuable than any formal education, 25 years as an assistant to the artist Breon O’Casey has proved of deeper and more longstanding influence.

Guy Royle’s jewellery inhabits a space between the definitions of Art and Craft; mingling influences from both, yet never so far as becoming exclusively one or the other. Brooches are paintings in metal, necklaces are sculptures for the human form, while the tones, shades and textures of raw materials are his palette. This combination of elements brings a timeless and natural quality to his work. Guy’s jewellery is timeless and graceful. Guy lives and works in rural Penzance, Cornwall.

“My introduction to making jewellery started in the 1980’s when the artist Breon O’Casey asked me to assist him with his jewellery for two days a week. I had no experience as a jeweller and had no thought or ambition to become one. However I worked with Breon for 20 or so years and became fully involved with the practice of making jewellery and sculpture. Breon was an excellent teacher and companion and pointed the way to a simplification of style and uncomplicated working methods.

I do not believe in the distinction between art and craft. Jewellery is a wonderful synthesis of a personalized object and a social statement which touches all aspects of our lives. It is abstract, conceptual, decorative and descriptive but above all it becomes a personal affirmation of the wearer and the maker melts into anonymity.
