PROSPECT
Bronwen Sleigh
30 Nov 2018 - 22 Dec 2018
The Scottish Gallery welcomes Bronwen Sleigh to showcase her new body of work based on the buildings and modernist architecture of Kampala. Like that in many other African cities, Kampala arose at the county’s time of independence. The striking architecture represents Uganda’s forward thinking and positive outlook on the future at a time of independence. This architecture seems to freeze moments of the city’s history. The buildings now stand as monuments to the hopes of the past.
Bronwen is a multi-disciplinary artist who takes inspiration from industrial architecture, unused and forgotten urban spaces, and environments at the edge of the city. Her work provokes an extended and considered dialogue with these spaces, which she transforms through the process of drawing, painting and printmaking. Sleigh’s work explores space rather than describing it, challenging perceptions of the ordinary by presenting it in an unfamiliar way.
