Alasdair Gray Drawings from the 1950s and 60s 6 - 30 April 2011

Some of these drawings were made during Alasdair Gray’s years at Glasgow School of Art in the 1950s and the rest thereafter up to the mid 1960s. A number of them were drawn directly on to the pages of a large accounting ledger to which the artist added a good number more of his drawings by pasting them on to the sheets of ledger paper. At one point some time ago the collection of drawings was sold to a private collector and some years later it arrived at our gallery; giving us the opportunity to mount the present exhibition.

The drawings are of Alasdair Gray’s family, friends and fellow artists. They are an historical record of time and a generation and are evocative of their period and insightful of the characters of the subjects, which are wonderfully expressed and delineated by a major artist and literary figure of the post war era.
