PAGES OF WEDDING INSPIRATION

Party animals

If you’re animal daft then including a furry or feathered friend is a fun way to brighten your wedding day, says Morag Bootland

Never work with children or animals may have once been considered sage advice, but as a country of animal lovers it was only a matter of time until our furry and feathered friends made their way into every aspect of life.

And weddings are no exception. In fact, a survey by charity Guide Dogs in 2022 found that 94% of dog owners who were planning a wedding would like

their pooch to play a starring role in their big day.

But for anyone visualising muddy paw prints on the mother of the bride’s carefully curated outfit, or a steaming pile of poo in the middle of the aisle, fear not. Because such is the demand for animal best men and ring bearers that there are now companies dedicated to ensuring that you can include animals in your big day without stress.

Jemma Cox started Hounds and Heritage, a wedding day dog chaperone business, in August 2021. Following her own wedding in Luss on Loch Lomond – where Loki, her beloved springer spaniel was the guest of honour, along with family dogs including a labrador, spaniel and American bulldog – Jemma realised that it would have been much less stressful had there been someone around to help out with the dogs.

Jemma’s background in dog walking and events, which gave her vital wedding experience, meant she was perfectly placed to start her business. And what started out as a side-hustle soon became a full-time career. In her first year alone, Jemma chaperoned 120 weddings, and she’s now taken her 350th booking.

‘I’ll cover just about anything’, she

says. ‘If it’s a new way of incorporating the dog, I’m up for it!’

Hounds and Heritage’s normal services include assisting the photographer to get the dog looking straight at the camera, meeting and greeting guests and ceremonial assistance. They will also take care of your pooch until midnight at your venue, or overnight in their own home, at the venue or at the client’s home.

Jemma has three employees, with plans to take on more this year. One of the most important pieces of advice she would offer anyone thinking of including their dog in their wedding is to ensure that whoever is looking after them gets to know the animal first.

FROM TOP: The newly wed Mr and Mrs Brown with ring-bearer Martha at Enterkine House Hotel; Louise and Gordon were married at the Lodge on Loch Lomond with a special guest appearance from Rory and Pearson the alpacas.

‘We include several meetings as we know it’s really important. We mix each meeting between dog walks in public places, where we can analyse behaviour around people, dogs and distractions, and home visits, so we can see if they settle in their own environment with someone new,’ she says.

‘It’s why we have such well behaved dogs on the day too, as we’re building trust and bonds between ourselves and the owner – which the dogs pick up on.’

With an increase in wedding venues allowing dogs, and with more and more couples keen to have their furry family present, there’s no sign of the trend slowing down. But there’s lots to think about before inviting your four-legged friend to join in your big day.

‘Dogs are family, often emotional support animals, and also spend almost every moment of our lives with us – from all the messy parts to all the good,’ says Jemma. ‘However, having a dog at your wedding isn’t as easy as it sounds. If you don’t have a good idea of canine body language, you might mistake

‘Dogs are family, often emotional support animals, and also spend almost every moment of our lives with us – from all the messy parts to the good’

your dog’s nervous cues for excitement. It’s essential to pay attention and set limits to ensure your pup is comfortable and stress-free.

‘I’d always suggest getting your dog’s photographs done first, and to also limit the amount of people your dog is handled by.

‘If you can invest in a professional – definitely do it; but ask plenty of questions. What are you getting for your money? What is their experience with weddings as well as dogs?

But it’s not only canines that are getting their paws in on the wedding day action. One animal that has seen an explosion in popularity is the alpaca. Cute and cuddly, these South American mammals are often farmed for their cosy fleeces, but they also make a fun and friendly addition to a ceremony.

Stuart and Jean Ramsay set up Velvethall Alpacas in the Scottish Borders in 2012. With no experience with alpacas, or weddings for that matter, Jean, who worked in a pharmacy, and Stuart, an engineer, started out with just four alpacas and now have over 40. Breeding, showing and alpaca walks were followed by their first wedding in 2014. Velvethall was the first in Scotland to offer alpacas for weddings and they’ve not looked back.

But why on earth would you want to share your big day with an alpaca? Well, alpacas are quite docile, they’ve undoubtedly got the cuteness factor and they’re great with children. So, if you’re breaking the children rule, as well as the animal rule, then this might be perfect for you.

Stuart is pretty flexible with how the alpacas help out at weddings, but

‘For Harry Potter fans everywhere, or anyone who prefers feather to fur, there’s the option to have a barn owl deliver your wedding rings’

generally they’ll be taking on ring bearing duties. So, the alpacas will remain out of sight until it’s time to put a ring on it. The guests don’t know what’s happening, the best man will pretend to have lost the rings and will run out to find them. Cue Pearson, the chief ring bearing alpaca, who will appear in a bow tie with a pouch around his neck containing the rings. He’ll usually be accompanied by his alpaca pal Rory. After the rings have been safely delivered the alpacas will wait outside until after the ceremony when the guests can feed them carrots and take them for a walk.

Couples are welcome to come and meet the alpacas before their big day, and in fact Stuart would encourage this. ‘Sometimes people will just hit it off with a particular alpaca,’ says Stuart, ‘although Pearson is normally always the one who delivers the rings as he has such a chilled-out temperament. In fact, there was one wedding when rather than leaving after delivering the rings he decided to just sit down. The groom decided he was fine and so he just sat there and watched the rest of the ceremony.’

Stuart has noticed a huge increase in the demand for alpacas and has taken his boys to weddings in the Highlands and as far as the Lakes.

For Harry Potter fans everywhere, or anyone who prefers feather to fur, there’s always the option to have a barn owl deliver your wedding rings. Graeme Neilson of Strathblane Falconry is based near Glasgow, but has taken his birds of prey to work at weddings all over Scotland, from Dingwall to Duns to Portpatrick.

‘Barn owls are great at delivering rings,’ he tells me. ‘They’re very biddable and will work really well for a food reward.’

As well as his barn owl, Graeme can also provide a display of different birds of prey for guests to enjoy. He has 21 birds including harris hawks, eagle owls and falcons.

So, whatever you’re looking for from your wedding day, the animal world really is your oyster.
