The Seven Hills Buzz The Seven Hills School Bulletin
A Brief Word from Chris Garten Overheard at yesterday’s Upper School morning assembly: a spirited announcement of tonight’s Student Artists for Haiti Program (8:00 p.m. at the Madisonville Arts Center); a warm invitation to next Saturday’s SNAAP sponsored event, Youth in Politics, featuring several key elected officials; a notice of a student debate on the need to balance the right to assembly and free speech against mounting security concerns; an invitation from the Economics class for graphics arts students to meet with the Director of Marketing at Chiquita Brands to discuss art careers in global advertising; and equally thunderous ovations for the victorious girls lacrosse team, the winners of the National French Contest, the most recent inductees into the Cum Laude Society, a tongue-in-check report from the boys track team that at a meet where we were not expected to excel, we did not(!), and a proud sister’s emotional announcement that her brother had been admitted to Princeton! This 10-minute conclave occurs twice each week, reminding me often that a great deal of the learning on our campuses occurs outside the classroom. Welcome back! Chris Garten Head of School

Senior receives 2010 YMCA Character Award Senior Katherine Steinman is one of 40 area teens who are recipients of 2010 YMCA Character Awards for demonstrating outstanding qualities of leadership and character and for working to strengthen their schools and communities. Susan Marrs, Director of College Counseling, said, “Katherine has, largely single-handedly, already raised $20,000 for a rural Guatemalan mountain village whose 40 families now have cinderblock stoves, a gray water system, latrines (the first toilets in the village), and a school that, before she came along, they could only dream of. … Now her goal is to raise enough to buy new desks and chairs for the school.” Katherine is also a weekly volunteer at Su Casa Hispanic Ministry, working with Spanish-speaking families.
