Congratulations and Best Wishes, Class of 2012!

Seven Hills bid farewell to the 60 members of the Class of 2012 in commencement exercises June 8. By choice of the seniors, the commencement speaker was David Abineri, former Head of the Math and Science Departments. Tributes to the class were given by teacher Brian Wabler, parent Craig Young, and class members Caleb Brill and Sam McHugh.

Hoeland Scholarship, and fifth grader Michael Nordlund was awarded the Theodore C. Wuerfel Merit Scholarship. Fifth grader Annabel Stanley was awarded the Elisabeth Greenwald Mapes Scholarship for “best exemplifying the Seven Hills Values.”

Annual SNAAP Recognition Banquet celebrates 2012 graduates, transitioning fifth & eighth graders The 13th Annual SNAAP Recognition Banquet on June 10 was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our 2012 graduates, to recognize transitioning Lower and Middle School students, and to thank individuals who are making a difference in our students’ lives.

The inspiring keynote address was given by Toilynn O’Neal (at right), Diversity Director at St. Ursula Academy and Board Member of the Queen City Foundation.

Her previous positions include Community Engagement Coordinator at Cincinnati Art Museum, and she continues to serve as curator of exhibits for art organizations.

The Banquet was a great family celebration which included a piano performance by rising seventh grader Carly Jones (at left) and The Professionals with KsW on Sax.

Varsity Spring Sports BOYS VARSITY TENNIS The boys tennis squad had a great season. The varsity went 16-3 playing a tough schedule riddled with the toughest Division I and II teams in the state. The swinging Stingers were ranked third in the state and second in the city for Division II. Three players advanced to the state finals. Seniors Matt Cohen and Alex Markovits finished in the top 8 and junior John Larkin finished in the top 16.

by Hadiya Harrington in the goal and Sara Johnson on defense, worked hard to take this young group to a competitive level. As the season proceeded, the players started to build their teamwork and skills, so that by the end of the season, we were seeing a team that was very competitive. This bodes very well for next year, as we are losing only four players. The greatest surprise has been the solid development of the freshmen, led by Maggie

Gosiger, who became solid contributors. To add to their skills, we were able to arrange some added games for our large number of freshmen and this was vital to their future growth. I am looking forward to an even stronger team with even higher goals for 2013.”

won our first playoff game in several years despite our young age and injuries. The lacrosse team used this year to implement a new system and way of life. We are ready for 2013 and ready to bring a new banner to Kalnow.

They made up two relays (4 x 400, 4 x 800) and four individual events (long jump, 200, 400, 800). For the second year in a row, Alex finished in the top 8 in the 800.

There were two school records set in the 100 (11.02) and 400 (51.8) by TJ. Both teams were quite a bit smaller this year, but the freshman class provided a sneak preview of things to come. Thanks again to the senior class for their leadership and making this season one of the most spirited I’ve experienced in a long time.”

Faculty honors announced for four teachers Head of School Chris Garten announced three prestigious faculty honors earlier this spring. Math Department Head and Upper math teacher Anne Ramsay is the 2012 recipient of the the Frederick Hauck Faculty Chair in Math and Science in recognition of the excellence of her teaching. Upper French teacher Ann Griep and Middle math teacher Carri Haskins are 2012 recipients of Brodie Grants for Excellence in Teaching from the Brodie Family Faculty Betterment Fund. More on these faculty honors will be in a future publication.

At the closing faculty luncheon, a new award—the Class of 1956 Faculty Award—was presented for the first time. In honor of their 50th reunion, members of

the Class of 1956 established a restricted endowment fund to provide an annual financial award to a member of the Upper School faculty “who fosters a love and excitement for learning among Seven Hills students.” The first recipient of the award is Middle/Upper Latin teacher Brian Sebastian (at right).

Middle School Spring Sports

The Middle School baseball team had high expectations entering the 2012 season, with an MVC Tournament Championship at the top of its list. The team was dominant during the regular season and beat league rival Cincinnati Christian in the tournament championship game, giving the Middle School baseball program its first MVC title! The coaches attribute the success to the players’ commitment to the season and their goals.

Great pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting were the key attributes to the team totaling an 8-3 overall record on the season. The eighth graders provided strong leadership and the whole team will take a lot of pride in seeing “2012 Baseball” added to the championship banners in the Stoehr Gym. The Stingers were coached by Mike Heis, Eric Wetli, and Grant Reynolds.

Coach Russell White said, “The Middle tennis team worked hard and enjoyed a very successful and thrilling season. Teammates made each other better through practice times and camaraderie, and the team focused on our season-ending doubles tournament that we hosted on our varsity courts. “When we embarked upon the 2012 Middle School boys lacrosse season, we knew we had a tough road ahead of us,” said Coach Mike Collette. “Our team only had a handful of eighth graders, no experience at the goal tender position, a small team leaving us very few subs, and a very challenging schedule that pitted us against many ‘A’ level eighth grade teams. Despite these challenges and multiple games where we only had one or two subs on the sideline, we had a terrific year and developed a ‘warrior culture’ that will serve us well for the 2013 season.

Congratulations to Matthew Marquardt (at right), who competed in the Deer Creek Sprint Triathlon on June 3 and placed first in his age group (15-19) and 15th overall against over 200+ competitors! A sprint triathlon consists of swimming 750m, biking 20km and running 5km, and Matthew completed the course in 1 hour 11 minutes. just under .500, we won the games we should have won, including an exciting victory over Bellbrook at the state championships when we tied the game with 15 seconds to go and emerged victorious in overtime.

The 2012 Middle School girls lacrosse team was short on numbers and experience but not on determination. With every practice and game the girls improved tremendously and fielded a very competitive team this spring. The season consisted of a lot of exciting close losses and big wins with their high-powered offense and rock-solid defense keeping them in every game. Highlights of the season included wins over league rival CCD, Mason, and powerhouse Cincinnati Royals. The girls gained valuable experience and carried on the tradition of being a competitive Seven Hills MS Lax Team with great sportsmanship and team camaraderie. The Lady Stingers were coached by Chelsea Graham and Winston Licata.

China trip continued from page 1 Seven Hill is proud to offer the fifth year of the Downey Seminars, the first in a series of international programs for Seven Hills students. This is a program which Seven Hills, in collaboration with UC and supported through the generosity of the The Harriette R. Williams Downey Fund, offers a total four-week experience on China for rising seniors.

Students spent the first week at school learning the basics of the Mandarin Chinese language while studying fundamental elements of Chinese history, culture and traditions. The students will then travel to Beijing, Liuzhou, and Shanghai for the following three weeks to experience firsthand life in Chinese society. More on the students’ China trip in our next Buzz.

This year’s China trip is led by UC International Program Manager Ryan Meyer, Science Department Chair Karen Glum, and Chinese I and II teacher Peggy Lovro.

Student participants are Caroline Bonini, Cullen Diemer, Anna Gagliardo, Caleigh Griffin, Carly Harten, Allison Hills, Hugh MacKay, Kyle Patel, Georgie Russell, Adeline Sawyer, Terrance Webb, and Elizabeth Young.
